This evening we roll out the final article in our three-part series assessing the stand-out attacking statistics over the first three Gameweeks. Having cast our analytical eye over the Defenders and Midfielders, we turn our attentions up front.
This is a fair shoulder. In the Premier League Tom would probably get a lengthy ban for it 😉
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bgkrs-b9S4UOpen ControlsWhy not triple down on Arsenal with Ozil-Walcott-Giroud?
Some say it isn't diversified enough. I don't actually get the diversification point. All that matters is how you get the most points by the end of the season, not your team's undulations in point production from week to week.
The overwhelming majority of Arsenal goals will have one of Ozil/Walcott/Giroud on the assist and one on the goal. Thus, for what is likely one of the three highest scoring teams in the league this season, you can capture 70% or more of all assists and goals on the team. You can't do that with ManU, ManC, or Chelsea.
You can't know who will get the goals and assists every week, but tripling up is a heck of a way to get in on a lot of points from Arsenal's season and for your FPL team.Open Controlsah
Spurs fanOpen Controls
Well you'd expect at least one to get returns each and every week and when they had a nice fixture you'd be rolling in points. That being said, I'm not sure I'd shell out 10m for a guy who hasn't played a single game for his new team yet. Perhaps just Wally and Giroud for the time being and see if Ozil is worth the money first.
Open Controlsozil's worth the money. some things you just know.
Open Controlsyeah, I see that point too
just a curiosity posting for those who are on WC
it isn't an option for me right now as I'm making no transfers during the break and having a strange pining to figure out how to get Suarez into my club despite still being angry at him about denying GhanaOpen ControlsSum of point production week to week = total points at end of season.
Arsenal have a limited amount of goals you they will score this season (Just like any other team) say: 72
Yes, getting 70% or more of assists and goal from one team could be accurate. But the chance of that figure exploding is nil to zero. Picking them across a wider range of teams means that amount of potential goals scored is more than even if you get a lower % of those goals and assists.
So Giroud, Ozil, and Walcott get 70% of 72 goals
While Arsenal get 70% of 72= 50.4 goals (with very little chance of improving)
While Silva, Coutinho/Lamela/Michu, Soldado/Sturridge get 25% (a much lower figure than expected) of 66, 71, 66 = 203 which equates to around 50.75 goals (with a huge chance of improving considering the selection of a 25%)
I think you'll find most Fantasy Managers would be aiming for a team that will explode and raise higher ranks while also minimizing risk. Unfortunately selecting 3 Attackers from one team is not one of explosive or risk free.
The maths was rushed but it was just to give you a general idea.Open ControlsOzil is worth it even if not on pks, although he probably will be. Think of golden days of Lamps, he will be a chief creator, score more goals than did in Spain, will be on corners, pks, and free kicks. He will steal Goals from Arteta, and now Giroud, and will be assister to most of Walcotts goals.
Open ControlsWon't arteta be on pens when he returns??
Open Controls
Only problem I see is that when arsenal have a poor fixture, you have fewer captaincy options than everyone else. I agree that tripling up is no real problem in terms of overall points though... only in a head to head league does it cause a problem as your weekly expectation will be greatly determined by arsenal's results.
Open ControlsTrue say if arsenal give someone a tonking u will have a massive game week. But if they have a bad week, it puts u in really really bad shape. I'd say consistency is important.
Open Controls
if GREENNRED is still around(or anyone else who'd like to chip in), any suggestions instead of hernandez for 6.1 or lower? i can probobly stretch 6.2/6.3 if i get a couple more of those single rises im after
Open Controlsoh shi*e! wrong name!!!!!! i mean heelsoverhead!
Open Controlsha ha.
I'm not really adverse to PHernandez myself, but I've noticed those who have finished in the top 10K regularly mostly stating that he was just a pickup for the price rise and not a good one to hold.
Fer at Norwich for 6.0 seems a good option, though chatted with a Norwich fan last night who thinks Snodgrass will still be the better choice for FPL in the end.
Arnautovic at Stoke for 5.5. should be monitored next two weeks, might be good, might not play, might get a red card in his first minute of play.
Then its really the usual suspects 5.1 and below: Brady, Whittingham, Kim, Redmond, Barkley, JWP.
So far, no player (except Hernandez) has really emerged in the 5.5 to 7 range yet.Open Controls
haha, i clicked on your link on the bottom of the last page so your name was in my head!
i think barkley might be under a bit more pressure for gametime now no?Open ControlsI don't know for sure but I hear he did well for England the other night and his form is very good. The only threat to him seems to be the Donkey Gibson when he's fit. McCarthy might take fellaini's spot but he was poor enough for us v Sweden on Friday. Hopefully he'll have a stormer against Austria. I hope Martinez plays both but McCarthy is also a good cheap mid option but maybe too defensive.
Robbie Brady, if nailed-on is decent.Open Controls
Whittingham on all set pieces for Cardiff at 5.0 (check the set piece takers page). I'd say Hernandez is a great pick though...just an awkward price.
Open Controls
What TV channel is the tennis on?
Open ControlsUnfortunately its already finished...great game though.
Open Controls
Using my wildcard this week and so far having chose this team. RMT and let me know what you think.
Cech (Boruc)
Coleman M.Dawson Zabaleta Sakho (Gabbidon)
Walcott Michu Lampard Yaya (Ward-Prowse)
Soldado Benteke (Gayle)Open Controlsthe concept of coverage is madness!
madness i tell youOpen ControlsTrue. Regardless of coverage though, players such as sturridge, Enrique, mignolet have good form and fixtures. I guess I wouldn't buy sturridge now but as an owner I won't sell him until an injury actually affects his game time for Liverpool.
Open Controls
not a fan of four at the back. i know there's been alot of talk about the new baps system and all that, but i dont think the occasional bap makes up for goals. oh wait, i know it dosn't!
my advice would be to downgrade defence and upgrade gayle

I own Cech, but most would say you could get the same bang out of Mignolet or Szczesny for much less. You can do a lot with an additional .8 or 1 in your budget. Think it over.
Dawson may lose job to Chiriches
Rather have B.Turner or Chester than Gabbidon as both Cardiff and Hull are stronger in defense than Crystal Palace.
Will discuss my Lampard tirade only if prompted.
Yaya is playing deep and is unlikely to generate much points.

i am unleashing the power of the promptOpen ControlsLampard tirade
Last time he scored more than 12 goals two seasons in a row was 2004-2006, 8 odd years ago by the end of this season. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Lampard
Last season he score more than 12 goals (15), he's scored 2 this season, so your upside is 10 more goals.
He had one assist last year.
He hasn't logged more than 2250 minutes for a season since 2009-2010, 4 seasons ago.
He's logging minutes for England as well.
If Mourinho trusts him, where is he going to want Frank's minutes, in the Prem, or in other competitions where his experience can help?
He's 35. He's Chelsea's Giggs. He had a nice run to start the season, but the idea that he'll keep this up and be reborn as the Lampard of 2009-2010 (his only year with more than 20 goals) is nostalgia.
Great pick for the Double Game Week in week 1, but that shouldn't color our vision for what he's capable of the rest of the season except that you probably already missed out on 17% or more of his goals for the season by not owning him earlier.Open ControlsPolitely disagree with a lot of this.
Giggs would never have played 90 mins 3x in a week. Clearly mourinho has faith in lamps' fitness
You can't use a random statistic to claim that because he scored well last yr hr won't this yr. If he'd scored badly last yr would you be telling people to buy him because he alternates good/ bad years?!Open ControlsSince 2001, he's scored more than 12 goals in a season 4 times, and two of them were 8 & 9 seasons ago.
It is not just about last year. Its about over a decade of data, and the fact remains that the years in which he scores more than 12 goals are the anomaly, not the other way round.Open ControlsOK so why is 12 such a magic number? What's wrong with the 10, 11,12 goal seasons (with multiple assists including ten one season) despite being dropped by other managers who favour rotation?
Note: mourinho had many 30yr+ players playing every game in his successful stint at inter Milan. During his Chelsea reign he hardly ever rested anybody.
While lampard is starting I'm not sure the possibility he *might* be dropped is enough to avoid him as a very reasonably priced fantasy asset. I bought him at the start and I'm sure you would've told me not to then too.Open ControlsLamps has had 10 assists in about 6000 minutes over the last 3 seasons. Taking that as an average, he'll get 5 assists this year if he plays 3000 minutes (close to a full season).
why 12? because if it was 13, it would sound worse.
goals since 2001 per season
5, 6, 10, 13, 16, 11, 10, 12, 22, 10, 11, 15
everyone remembers the 22 because everyone playing FPL who had half a brain owned him that year. yet, it is the oddball year. it just seems unlikely that in his mid-30s he will have 2 goal-scoring seasons that belong in his top 3 all-time back-to-back.Open ControlsLook at what you just used as a stat against lampard!
The fact that he has scored significantly more goals than ANY other midfielder in the last ten seasons is a bad thing?
TEN CONSECUTIVE SEASONS WITH 10+ GOALS! (This is not anger, this is the motion of banging my ahead against a wall)
Find me another midfielder who has got even 4 consecutive seasons with 10+ goals. If you find a midfielder with a better goalscoring record than lampard I'll eat my shoes and wash them down with a vindaloo.Open Controlslong as all you want is 8 more goals from this season, okey dokey, i abdicate to you as the victor
notably, about 25% of his goals have come from penalties
http://web.orange.co.uk/article/gaffer/Lampard-penalty-goals-for-Chelsea
i like lampard. i just don't think he's a good FPL option for the season.Open Controls
Personally I'd prefer to downgrade Sakho (will he start just yet?) and Yaya, and upgrade Gayle to one of the 9m strikers - if the maths adds up.
Open ControlsTony Moon. Bees Knees
Open Controls
You NEED 3 strikers. None of your midfielders (except maybe Walcott) will outscore Sturridge IMO. Chester is a better 4.0 than Gabbidon. Dawson isn't even close to nailed on right now, and there's a case to say Lampard won't get a start every week. Yaya relies on free kicks to get points...he isn't going to get a wondergoal from a free kick every game, much better options around that price.
Obviously, this is all just my opinion, but trust me on the 3 strikers thing.Open Controls
A) migs and Vidic
Or
B) cech and Sakho
Rest of defense is Zab, Mert, Collins and Chester.Open ControlsB for me.
Open ControlsI'm thinking the same.. Who will keep more clean sheets united or city? Zab or Vidic? Zab is the obvious choice right?
Open ControlsReally about who starts more matches, Zab or Vidic? Don't know. But City have more injuries right now, so Zab is more nailed right now.
Open ControlsVidic is definatly nailed as the main cb it's just fitness that has him being a rotation risk with UCL starting. Shirley mouse won't want to drop points anytime soon though and will stick with his best playable back 4?
Open Controls
I would go for A
Open ControlsB with Vidic instead of Zab maybe?? City defense is riddled with injuries Cardiff put 3 past them maybe Vidic safer bet for can atm
Open ControlsYa basically I'm tryin to pick 4/5 defenses via the cheapest route. United, City, Chelski, Arsenal, Pool.
Mert is the must at 5.5 as I'm saving 1.2 to do Soldado and Sturridge to Suarez and Giroud gw6 with 2ft.Open Controls
Morning all
Just had a trawl through the Saints forum and most are expecting Chambers to lose his place to Clyne and JWP to be benched. Lambert benched as well, late sub for Osvaldo.Open ControlsDidn't Lambert and Osvaldo play together in the last game?
Open ControlsYes, and it didn't work out all. They lost 1-0 with JWP failing to close down Redmond for the goal. Created little in attack, Lambert and Osvaldo's styles don't complement each other, hence the anticipated change to 4-2-3-1.
Open Controls
Did the same trawling myself on their forums before the Sund game and they said the same thing about Clyne then. Hope they have it right now.
Open ControlsThey're only the fans, what do they know 😉 I hope they have it right as I'll be getting Clyne this week.....
Open Controls
You're the 2nd person that trawled there and found out they expect JWP to be benched. Upvote to you for the effort.
Other person was SweetPea (aka Pascal Evans in the hall of fame #5)Open ControlsYeah, I don't believe it either. Fair effort for doing the scouting leg work, and perhaps as a one GW one-off it may happen (Lambert looks set for a tough 90 min tomorrow), but I doubt its the plan going forward.
Open ControlsYea, I appreciate the effort
I just think that Pochettino would have thought about how the two of them could work together before signing Osvaldo. One bad game against Norwich won't change things.Open ControlsCome on guys, Rickie Lambert may be a true man of the people, a stout-hearted English hero hewn from the same sturdy oak as Richard The Lionheart, Winston Churchill and Henry Cooper but he's 31, his legs have gone and he doesn't suit Pochettino's style at all.
Open ControlsI'm Saints born n bred and that's the funniest thing I 've heard in a fooki' long time.
But correct :):Open Controls
My current injury woes are Foster, Toure, Haz, Silva, can't wait for this break to be over...and we've still got a round of games left. Been resisting the urge to WC and i feel its too late now, must...hold..tight.
Maybe Haz > Walcott for a hit.Open ControlsI hope you are right as id like to keep him for the Fulham game the following week. The only plus is that i would have Miralles to come off the bench should any of the mids not start. All feeling very risky however.
Open ControlsI sold Mirallas, a bit hasty, sweating on any possible injuries. Hazard and Sturridge on yellow flags so far. That;s not your team linked so cos you've no Hazard. Check this out though it might be old news. Looks like Oscar, Hazard and Willian will be Chelsea's middle 3.

Open ControlsI am actually getting to see the Pixies this coming Sunday. Totally psyched. Among the headliners at music festival that I am going to in Chicago. Replacements are back together for this tour. Also Bob Mould (Husker Du, Sugar).
Open ControlsCool. I've never seen them. Haven't been to many gigs ever really. Will Kim Deal be playing with them? Saw Eddie Veder in Albuquerque last year but he was on some ukelele vibe. Imagine the Pearl Jam mainman on the ukelele, what the fk is that about? It was like visiting hell and it was all radiators 😉
Open ControlsNo, unfortunately. Lead singer from the Muffs is taking her place.
Ooh, that sounds a bit painful on the Eddie Vedder thing. I saw them at a Lollapalooza in about 1993 or so and it was...... epic.Open ControlsThe Muffs? Great name 😉
Yeah it was election night and he was on an Obama buzz. Fecks sake I was hoping for Black and Jeremy and the like and he played a ukelele and talked about politics. Glen Hansard supported him and he wasn't much better.Open Controls
Even if Haz plays, how do you equate M's thinking with his Mid powerhouse.
How does Will fit with your thinking?Open ControlsIts so hard to guess how they'll line up especially so early on, but i feel once we get into the groove of things it will be Haz, Mata and Will who would be preferred first choice.
Open ControlsNo I Don't think so. He's using Baby face as his lynch pin. Will will be preferred to Mata but with Haz doubts It could be.
Open Controls
Walcott, Barkley, Ben Arfa, Redmond, Brady..
Its costing me 31.9m. Its hardly world beating but anyway..
I'm on a WC and really pleased with my defence and strikers.
Looking for a solid but potentially great midfield..
Any changes to recommend??Open Controlsthe rest of your team would help.
on its own that's a fairly weak midfieldOpen ControlsHernandez and Whittingham instead of Ben Arfa and Redmond IMO. Save yourself a bit of money too.
Open ControlsActually Its cost, 31.4m but I've 31.9m to play with..
I'm all ears..Open ControlsIf you have any interest in Mirallas still (I do) then

miralles to Brady
Turner to Vidic
going purely on fixtures - Brady could score a couple
MANU has good fixtures - potential for clean sheet
NORWICH fixtures are bad
what do you guys think ?Open ControlsI've done that myself on my WC. Looks good
Open ControlsChecked your team, and I think its a good move. I think the allocation of more money into your DF is right, and getting some money out of MF is the right choice too.... the only other suggestion may be what if you downgraded Silva, bought Vidic, and then next week upgrade Dzeko.
I'm a Dzeko doubter, so that's partially where this is coming from.Open Controlsi want to hold dzeko while everyone is getting rid
he is a very explosive player... however, i loved negredo performance last GWOpen Controlsyeah, not having him has made me nervous all 3 game weeks, but transfering him in has made me more nervous.
Open Controls
MIrallas may not stay forever, but structuring in a 7.5ish middy with two 9m+ mids seems to be a competitive balance right now. Nani, Barfa, Nolan can take Mirallas' place soon enough if he really does nothing.
Open Controls
Turner definitely won't score well in the near future, but I'm sticking with Mirallas, I think he's been unlucky so far. Turner to Chester for no hit would be better IMO.

fair points, I suppose, but FPL doesn't operate at a season-long scale. It operates in 3ish GW chunks. And owning Lampard for the right chunks is still viable. He's still in the conversation for this reason.
Your best point was that he may be used more in Europe vs PL. Remains to be seen...Open Controlsbeing that most of his goals are going to come from free kicks and penalties at this point, I'm not sure how you predict what games in which he is
a) going to start
and
b) is going to have a penalty or well-located free kick to knock in

Template means these are popular enough picks that need not be debated as most on the site like them.
Ben Arfa & Hernandez are the flavor of the week as only them plus Nolan have scored in the lackluster 5.5 to 7.9 price range, and they scored more recently. Mirallas once he drops to 7.4 (should happen before Friday) might be a better pick going forward (though he has a few hard fixtures coming up).
Folks on the site who have finished in top 10,000 seem to think Michu is the one to own on Swansea and Hernandez is fool's coverage. Time will tell.
Also, keep in mind that Suarez shows up to play come game week 6. You may want have a plan to get him, or not.

I have a personal issue with Lampard (tirade buried above), but most like him.
Hernandez is fine until someone else emerges at comparable price but folks who have finished in the top 10K don't seem to like him. They may be right, they may be wrong. I don't know.
Coutinho needs to come good soon. I suspect he will do better when Suarez comes back week 6.
Unless you want to
- downgrade Hernandez to a 5 and upgrade Lampard to a 9
- or downgrade Lampard to a 7ish and upgrade Hernandez to another 7ish
You are good to go and pretty darned solid.Open ControlsI would be worried for Lamps and Soldudo.
Otherwise I fear your team.Open ControlsJust have Boruc and a 4m bencher to free up 1.5.
Swap Zab to Ferdinand to capitalize on the clean sheet vs Palace. This will free up another .6
Replace Coutinho with Ozil. Or lose Hernandez and Soldado to Brady and RVP.Open Controls
How is this wc team:
Cech,
Vidic, Mert, Sakho,
Walcott, Lampard, Sessegnon, JWP
Benteke(c), Soldado, Sturridge
(Daniels), (Collins), (Chester), (Hernandez). 1.5 itb to do Soldado>Suarez and Sturridge>Giroud gw6Open ControlsI would start with Giroud for Soldado but that is just me
Open ControlsHe may still go in if Studge is confirmed unfit but I'm waiting on the Soldado situation until I transfer him to Suarez. I'm keen to see how he gets on with Erikson and Lamela supplying him now also
Open ControlsI'd start with Giroud for Sturridge, but... eh. All works out the same.
Sessegon? Not feeling a lot of faith in WBA, but I guess someone has to help them get it in the goal.
Rest is fine and well.Open Controls
Soldado still has great fixtures after gw6 so I think you need to decide if you want him or not, rather than selling him so soon.
Open ControlsYa this is true but so do Liverpool and Suarez.. Ya Sessegnon is a punt alright but he is just for 2weeks. GW6 I will either do Soldado&Sturridge to Suarez&Giroud and upgrade Sess the following week or do Soldado,Sturridge&Sess to Suarez,Giroud/Rooney&5.7
