Uefa Champions League 2013/14 – The Scout League

As many of you will have noticed, the official UEFA Fantasy Champions League game opened its doors last week ahead of the first round of fixtures. Once again, we aim to offer coverage of the competition this season with a pre-tournament guide and regular articles to follow.

Earlier today, we set up the official Fantasy Football Scout league – the code to join is 1209685-489925 for those looking to get involved. For those unfamiliar with the UEFA game, we take a look at the basic ruleset below – later this week we plan to roll out a detailed analysis of the Player List ahead of Matchday 1, which gets underway on Tuesday September 17, with the deadline at 19.30 GMT.

Points Scoring

Almost three million Fantasy managers are more than accustomed with the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game and, luckily, this UEFA Fantasy Champions League offering bears a great deal of similarity – but for a few small differences. They are…

  • Earning a penalty for a foul in the box picks up 1 point irrespective of whether it is converted or not – as a result, there are no assists for penalties.
  • Converse to that fact, a player who concedes a penalty will score -1 for their infringement.
  • Every 5 recovered balls (completed clearances and tackles gaining possession) will add 1 point to a players tally.

Beyond the three mentioned points all the scoring is similar to FPL (with no Bonus Points on offer here, though) but if you feel like you need a little refresher, have a click on this link.

Transfers

A 13 Matchday season sees Fantasy managers granted two wildcards (one which must be played at the closure of the group stages) in addition to six free transfers to make at the end of each knockout round. Every other Matchday, most notably during the group stages, grants the standard one free transfer.

This concurrent run of single transfer allowances in the group stages means that the “open” wildcard is more often than not executed by the experienced European Fantasy managers during this time. There have normally been two schools of thought to this practice, to date.

The first sees Fantasy managers set up a side for the first couple (or even just one) Matchdays, fully expecting to change their squad in its entirety as they hop on and off all of the right bandwagons for the remainder of the Group stages. The other side of the coin sees Fantasy managers use their wildcard in Matchday six when many sides will have already guaranteed their place in the knock-out stages and begin to rotate squads accordingly – the perfect time to snap up that key differential.

It should also be noted that any superfluous trades made will only set you back two points – a much greater encouragement to take a punt in the transfer market in any given Matchday.

Team Management

In terms of squad selection, you pick a squad of 15, with a captain scoring double and, in the opening stages at least, you can only choose two players from any given side. European Fantasy managers are afforded eight standard tactical alternatives (ranging from 4-4-2 to 5-2-3) to set up their sides from.

Managing your squad is where the real key differences start to kick in.

Fantasy managers are afforded plenty opportunity to be active in the Champions League game, as a squad game takes effect with the introduction of “Managers Substitutions” – man management and pushing the deadlines are an added perk for those willing to be hands-on.

Aside from the final, each Matchday is spread across more than one day. What this means is that you can field all your players who play on a Tuesday and, if they under-perform, bring those with Wednesday fixtures off the bench and gamble that their score will end up higher.

The same can be said for your captain’s armband. If your skipper fails to deliver the first time round, or if you just want to gamble that someone can do even better the following evening, the armband can also be moved to a player who has yet to take to the field, with the previous captain then no longer having double points to his name.

If any of your players pick up a red card, however, not only will their points deduction stick but they also can’t be replaced. You’ll want to be careful around the most hot-headed of players, then.

A prudent manager won’t be selecting bench-fillers in their squad as a result – they’ll need a full battery of 15 players they can call to arms as they rotate their players to maximum effect.

If a manager chooses to make use of any of the previously described Manager Substitutions then it must be noted that the auto-subs rule (where any players who do not make the field are automatically replaced by those from your bench) is negated and cannot come into effect. So the less hands-on Fantasy Managers can still get the usual assistance if one of their starting XI doesn’t end up playing.

Once again, the code to join the FFScout league is 1209685-489925. Good luck to all those taking part.

    Hi all!
Haven't posted in a long while, though always here for news etc but feel compelled to air my opinion on early wildcarding. This post may be of more interest to those still deciding whether to go for it now or not.

I'm certainly not against using the wildcard early and have previously employed the tactic myself to good effect but have to say I'm surprised at how many people I see playing theirs this week. To my mind there are currently so many uncertainties/unknown quantities that as tempting as it may be, there is no way I would want to be using it yet.

For example, a few of the questions I am currently pondering which either affect my team now or are more general considerations in terms of potential future moves are as follows:

Man U: RVP essential or not? Any viable MF alternatives, Nani etc? Moyes effect?
Chelsea: Is anyone nailed on for majority of games? JT, Lamps etc
    Ars: The Ozil effect?
Liv: How will defence line up after GJ's injury? Impact of Suarez return, Coutinho in hole, Sturridge's durability etc?
    City: ?????
Spurs: Who will be the attacking player of choice, Soldado, Lamela, Eriksen?
Swansea: A Michu brace/bandwagon is surely imminent?
Cheapies: Who to have/will start, JWP, Brady, Barkley, Redmond etc?
Big money defence: Clean sheets? Surely the goals will soon start to flow?
Champions League: Rotation, preferred European/PL match starters?

So many unknowns at this point and players who have disappointed thus far but could be set to explode the minute you hastily eject them from your team. All these questions/factors surely point to the fact that it's just too early?

In conclusion I can't help but feel that unless you desperately want RVP in now, or your team has been decimated by injuries, non starters/dead losses and is too much to sort out with weekly transfers and the odd hit, or you've had the most horrendous of starts to the season, I would hold fire for at least a couple more weeks or until the next international break and reassess then. I also notice that price changes seem far more stable than last season so there appear to be less players rocketing up in price at such a rate that they quickly become difficult to acquire, which could also be a factor in deciding whether to stick or twist.

Playing the wildcard now may well work in your favour but if it does your decisions will surely involve relying on a fair share of luck rather than judgement. Decisions which I feel we will be able to make armed with far more knowledge if you resist the urge to join the wildcard frenzy for a couple of weeks at least! What do you think?

Didn't read it all; too long. The main reason to WC early is to steal a march on others by gaining team value. Can work if you use the extra funds well but I'm no fan.

Apologies, it ended up longer than I had anticipated! I understand the point about value but there really aren't that many players going up in value that quickly this year so at the moment I don't really see that as a valid reason. Just use your weekly transfers to hop onboard with form players?

Yep...sort of regretting it myself but I thought that a lot players would rise by 0.3 unfortunately this has not occurred so I guess it was a bit premature but like last years winner who WCed in GW2 last year....nothing ventured nothing gained. An early advantage is key in this game

Surely there are lots of unanswered questions, and we will definitely know alot more come December. But to fully get the potential out of your WC I believe you should have planned when to play it before kickoff GW1. If you planned on playing it in GW10, you set up your team accordingly, looking at rotation and fixtures up to GW10 only. If you planned on a WC GW2 then thats a whole different plan.
I personally believe the early WC is the way to go, get some cash early and do a quick fix to that team that ended up with a mediocre score.
If you plan on a WC in GW10, and hit a bad start and realize by GW5 that you are trailing far behind in your leagues and overall, what do you do then? You will probably start taking hits.

Anyway, my strongest thought on this matter is that we should all have made a plan for when to play it before GW1. You cannot plan on beeing lucky and hitting the top1000 right away, so you should plan on fighting your way to the top, and thus including when to WC in these ingenious plans:)

Am i alone in finding England a frustrating side to watch?

If we fail to create a goalscoring opportunity on a quick break, possession is turned over and we then have to retreat to try to win it back. Everyone is so quick to look for the 'killer ball' or get a shot away.

I'd like to see Lampard and Gerrard completing far more short passes to alter our tempo and angle of attack as a double-pivot rather than double-quarterbacks sending direct 30+ yard passes up to Lambert (Gerrard in particular).

It would be great to see us retain possession, explore and manipulate defences and recycle the ball if a chance isn't presented... As Arsenal, Everton, Southampton, Liverpool, Tottenham, and Chelsea and City (generally) now do. Most of our players are encouraged to keep the ball at club level, I'm sure they are capable...

    They ought to be capable.

I'm not trying to bash our national team, we must play to our strengths, I'd just like us to have a modern approach to the game and not be so stuck in our ways.

This goes all the way down to youth development if we are serious about changing things but the FA supposedly identified this years ago with Brookings appointment and haven't done anything worth mentioning about it.

I guess thats why we are stuck in our ways. Afraid of change or admitting something else might just be better than what we are doing. I hope your post was tongue in cheek.

Bayern are not a tippy-tappy side but they encourage technique and possession along with dynamism. They are the benchmark. Brazil played with this style to defeat Spain. Football has fashions and trends and sides that don't adapt get left behind.

It's amazing, we're playing 3 CMs and yet whenever one of them picks the ball up they have nobody to pass to so either go back to the CBs or play a long through ball towards Walcott.
Would like to see all our midfield much closer together and let Walker and Cole provide the width.
