The Scout Mission – Gameweek 7

A new regular, the Scout Mission offers a preview the forthcoming Gameweek by targeting the players, the teams and the selection issues that matter. This is what we’re watching out for, so you don’t have to.

Suarez vs Sturridge
The jury is out and will be watching keenly as Liverpool prepare for an Anfield meeting with Crystal Palace that will have Fantasy managers expecting heavy returns. While Brendan Rodgers’ side lack the creativity of Philippe Coutinho, his strike pairing are purring and potential Fantasy suitors will be watching on to assess just how the pair operate. The split of points between the two will go a long way to deciding transfer trends over the international break. We’ll also be watching out for the formation – Jose Enrique’s stock could be boosted further if Rodgers persists with three at the back.

The Newcastle Teamsheet
Alan Pardew’s half-time changes and post-match comments would indicate that we’ll see a changed starting XI for the visit to Cardiff. We’ll be looking to his teamsheet with interest, with Hatem Ben Arfa’s role, in particular, hotly anticipated. Hooked at half-time on Monday night, it could be that the Frenchman’s flair is sacrificed as Pardew looks to find the “balance” in his team. In contrast, Yohan Cabaye and Mike Williamson look certain starters.

The United Backlash
Just how will United react to back-to-back league defeats? How much will the journey to Shakhtar drain from their legs? Will David Moyes start with Robin Van Persie and Wayne Rooney in tandem at Sunderland? Moyes seems certain Rooney will recover from the shin complaint that forced him out in midweek.

The United situation is posing us Fantasy managers questions on a weekly basis. Despite erratic form and the concern that United are way short of their potential, we have to stay alert to the fact that the fixture list remains in their favour. A pair of Old Trafford encounters with Southampton and Stoke follow the trip to the Stadium of Light and we need to monitor their performance and form carefully with that in mind. Moyes’s choice of back four also needs monitoring – with Rafael and Phil Jones now available, we’ll be watching to see how the pecking order shapes up.

Amilfitano and Sessegnon
The pair were simply outstanding in the Old Trafford victory and could well emerge as realistic midfield candidates for the weeks ahead. The home meeting with Arsenal is perhaps the toughest of tests right now but, having risen to the occasion against United, we will be watching this pair with interest. Midfield looks to be the place to target differentials and the Baggies duo are shaping up nicely.

Wenger’s Midfield
The Gunners boss opted to rest Jack Wilshere for the Champions League victory over Napoli and, with Mikel Arteta and Tomas Rosicky are back as options, it will be interesting to see how he shuffles the pack for the trip to the Hawthorns, though with Santi Cazorla still sidelined, Wilshere looks likely to return to the Gunners’ left.

Paulinho vs Eriksen
Christian Eriksen is the fashionable pick: a poised playmaker who exudes class and creativity. However, Paulinho’s ability to arrive in the box is not going unnoticed, nor is his propensity to fire in efforts on goal. It could be that, for all Eriksen’s craft and dead-ball involvement, Paulinho could emerge as the stronger candidate for our Tottenham coverage given the 1.2 FPL price difference. Saturday’s events at the Lane in the local derby with West Ham will tell us more.

The Hammers Rearguard
Sam Allardyce surprised a few by dropping James Collins to the bench for the trip to Hull, calling on James Tomkins to lineup alongside Winston Reid. Following a rather unfortunate defeat at the KC Stadium, it remains to be seen if Big Sam offers Collins a recall or sticks with Tomkins to disappoint the Welshman’s Fantasy owners. Remain on the bench and Razvan Rat could well be the most viable route into the West Ham defence once the fixtures improve.

Lukaku’s Fixture-Proof Status
While the Belgian tore a haphazard Newcastle apart in a 45-minute spell on Monday night, he’ll face a far more grueling test of his mettle at the Etihad. A duel with compatriot Vincent Kompany looks on the cards, with Fantasy managers lining up a move for the Chelsea loanee ahead of Everton’s Gameweek 8 home encounter with Hull. A 0.3 FPL price rise over the international break looks inevitable and that would only be assured by any kind of returns from Saturday’s clash.

Juan Mata’s Pitchtime
Impressive again in Bucharest on Tuesday, Fantasy managers will be looking out for his name on Jose’s teamsheet for the trip to Norwich, pondering whether the Spaniard could yet be a factor. Having dropped to 9.6 from an FPL starting price of 10.5, Mata could represent value if we can be convinced of form and security of start. It will also be interesting to see how Jose deals with Hazard’s possible return – Andre Schurrle thrived in his role on Tuesday. Meanwhile, John Terry has started every league game so far but was in action in Bucharest: we’ll be watching to see how Mourinho juggles Terry, Gary Cahill and David Luiz for the Carrow Road visit.

Swansea’s Potential
A trip to Southampton will be a stern test but, after an opening set of fixtures that made Michael Laudrup’s outfit more ugly ducklings than swans, they follow the weekend with a schedule that suggests strong returns at both ends of the pitch. We’ll be looking to see if both Ashley Williams and Pablo Hernandez can prove their fitness, whilst assessing whether Michu deserves to keep his top ranking status in our midfield watchlist.

Paul Lambert’s Tactics
The Villa boss continues to tinker with his formation as a result of injuries. Lambert has now moved from 4-3-3- to 4-4-2 to 3-5-2 in the last three matches, with the latter tactic utilised in last week’s win over City. Should he retain the same shape, Antonio Luna could arrive on Fantasy radars as on out of position prospect on the left of midfield.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

When the watchlist report comes out, what are the odds that Walker will be labelled as second-best option after Vertonghen?

He should be ahead of Vert due to the price difference and Vert's low attacking threat this year compared to walker

There's a lot of talk about one of the Spurs midfielders being a good pick this week with their fixtures coming up and it seems Eriksen is the favourite, but why is there no love for Paulinho?

I get that he plays deeper, but his underlying attacking stats support continued returns. He also seems nailed-on, certainly for the weekend since he won't play tonight.

Siggy isn't nailed-on IMO and when running the comparison tool with Paulinho, there is only one winner.

Eriksen is definitely a good pick, but his attacking threat is mainly creating chances for others and we know that the bonus system doesn't really reward that. I think of the two, Paulinho is definitely the better pick given his price.

Does everyone else know something I don't? Any reason why Paulinho won't be the better pick going forward?

Eriksen will score goals for Tottenham. He is not just about creating chances of for others. he will get in the box as much if not more than Paulinho. When their team is more settled and people get on the same wavelength as Eriksen you will see a lot more one-twos and quick interchanges where he will end up with a lot of chances to score. If he can do it for Ajax he will do it for Tottenham

He does look very dangerous when watching the games, and with Yaya, Ramsey, Ramires, Lamps (in Europe at least) banging in the goals from their DM positions, no reason Paulinho can't as well. I'm still not sure I'd go for him over Eriksen though, Eriksen is still playing a more attacking role and, I would say, has better attacking qualities.

Yeah, I've seen the stats... and I'm usually such a stat-hugger, I just find the whole DM-love hard to accept, for some reason... Lamps did score a nice bucket of goals in the league last season, same role really. Like I said, maybe it's time to get with the trends.

Just tried lookin at Paulinho's history and he managed 20 goals in 86 games for Corinthians for 2010-2013. In a league where goals are a plenty that's amounts to around 9 goals every 38 games. I think he's just wasteful. Always looks dangerous and always attackin but no end product by the looks of it.

actually ignore this point as a comparison between the two.. Eriksen has just 25 in 113 for ajax so not much difference. I think goals will be similar amounts but Eriksen will edge it on assists. it's not a 2 million difference like it is in most teams between a CM and an ACM either

The stats suggest Paulinho is getting in the box a lot and having a lot more shots than I thought. No doubt he will score more goals than Eriksen IMO, but you're right that Eriksen looks more likely to assist, although it's interesting to note that the chances he creates are mostly crosses and not through balls

I think the next 5 games are key. Good fixtures and time Spurs started knocking in more than 1 goal a match. I just got Siggy and now sort regretting it, but as Jonty said don't get too serious, and I hope Siggy's eye for goal and prem experience now he is getting a run of games will come good.

Eriksen was £11 million by all accounts - a bargain IMO

Something has just hit me - I can do Nolan and HBA to Paulo and Erik for a 4 pointer. Unless someone can convince me otherwise (I have no other Spurs boys) I'm taking the pain away other than the hit pain!

Stats said brady was a bad option and I went with gut instinct and he scored great.

No doubt both are class acts but I think jury is out still for both fpl wise. From watching I would say erikson has more upside, he plays in the infamous hole can both create and shoot and could turn into a real asset. This season I worry he is not quite up to strength or match fitness, may have limited minutes and may get muscled out of some games. Paulinho is more direct and will score goals but I doubt he will be prolific or explosive. He is probably priced about right so depends on your squad structure whether you can fit him in. Personally I have erikson but may move him on. Don't think I will get paulinho

For me the Eriksen should be compared to VDV. Spurs main creative force, on all set pieces and priced cheap(VDV was 7.5). Should get on as early as possible. He's a quicker VDV with a better injury record for me

Vdv first 78 league games for ajax he scored 45 goals and it was closer to a goal a game in the first two seasons when I think he was playing no10, it tapered off a bit in his last few seasons when I think sneijder got the no10 and vdv was pushed out wide left fwd.

Ericsson isn't a patch on vdv, not fit to lace his boots imo

Paulinho might have better stats than Eriksen, as many have pointed out, but I do believe that Eriksen will come good soon, and will more than make up for extra 1.2 m you'd have to fork out to purchase him over Paulinho.

He orchestrates just about every Spurs attack, and sure he might "assist the assister" from time to time, but I have no doubt that his assist tally will start to rise significantly, and get the occasional goal. As we have seen, he is also more than capable of shooting from distance. He did score 10 goals during the course of the season( 2012/2013 ) for Ajax.

and just to push you over 😉 : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gBAacmxYMug

But , by all means, please do pick Paulinho, might just help my rank a bit 😉

Well at least that's what I think, and for my sake, let's just hope Eriksen is the better pick!

Oh yes, and Stats show that Eriksen's average position is quite far up the pitch. In fact, I believe in one of the last few games , his average position on the pitch was in front of Soldado!

          No worries 🙂

Sounds good, Im not saying that Paulinho is bad, I'm sure he's more than capable of banging in the odd goal, as the stats suggest, I'm just saying that Eriksen is better.

But yes, that might be right, Paulinho as a short term option, and Eriksen for the long run

If you use shooting stats as a measure why not consider Townsend who is cheaper and supposedly in the form of his career. He tops the shooting stats for midfielders including SoT. Personally I think its best to stick with proven performers and Eriksen and Sigurdson fit that category.

we will know more about who will start for spurs after todays teem sheet?

if Defoe starts that means that Soldado is nailed for league start?

i'd like too se Walker rested as well

Yes, tonight will give more clarity.

If Defoe starts and doesn't make a hattrick in the first half and subbed in the 60th minute. Soldado will start. But it will be more difficult if Soldado starts and Defoe comes in and scores...

      Walker rested would be ideal.

+ loads... Eriksen reminds me of VDV's fpl potential. All set pieces, playing behind the striker, main creative force, comin in underpriced(7.5 million VDV, 8 million Eriksen). Gonna be gold over the season imo

I guess you're right, I can't see him keeping this rate up but do still fancy better returns than 17 pts. I hate players like this, wouldn't touch him with a barge pole last season and now I can't afford to go without any longer as the downside of not owning him is too great.
