The Midweek Team News

Artur Boruc is out for a number of weeks with a broken hand for Southampton, whilst Kelvin Davis is also injured ahead of the visit of Villa. Philippe Coutinho is fit for Liverpool’s home game with Norwich, though Kolo Toure is doubtful with a hip problem. Bacary Sagna is likely to miss out for Arsenal. Angel Rangel is out for at least a fortnight for Swansea, who expect Michu back in training this week. Sam Allardyce and Alan Pardew both talk rotation, whilst Tony Pulis looks to Cameron Jerome and Marouane Chamakh to grab the goals in his first home game in charge of Palace. Here’s a summary of the press conferences so far:

Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino handed Fantasy managers an early-morning heads-up in his pre-9 a.m press conference. The Argentine confirmed Artur Boruc is out for “some weeks” with the broken hand sustained at Chelsea, whilst Saints second-choice stopper Kelvin Davis is also out of tomorro’s match with Villa, as is Morgan Schneiderlin, Danny Fox, Gaston Ramirez and Guly Do Prado, as the injuries start to build.

Arsene Wenger has revealed Bacary Sagna is expected to miss tomorrow’s match against Hull, with Carl Jenkinson set to deputise at right-back. Steve Bruce will check on the availability of Paul McShane, who has recently been sidelined due to a hamstring problem, whilst the Tigers boss admitted James Chester may be handed his first start since Gameweek 5 after finally recovering from a similar complaint and taking a place on the bench last week.

Brendan Rodgers has confirmed Philippe Coutinho “will be fine for Wednesday” after the Brazilian picked up an ankle problem prior to the weekend loss at Hull. Coutinho is poised to return to the Reds starting XI against the Canaries, though Kolo Toure is a doubt after picking up a hip problem towards the end of the 3-1 defeat at the KC Stadium.

Sam Allardyce has admitted he could be set to freshen up his starting XI ahead of this evening’s encounter at Palace:

“We have only a few niggles from Saturday’s game. We don’t consider they will cause us any difficulties in terms of the selection process, but having three games in a week, it may be about asking other squad players to step in and do a job on Tuesday or on Saturday.”

Alan Pardew has also hinted at rotation as Newcastle make their way to Swansea. The Magpies boss has tinkered less than most managers over the last few games, but conceded he may hand a few squad players a run out at the Liberty:

“A few have been knocking on my door this morning asking to play. Steven Taylor, Hatem Ben Arfa, Papiss Cisse, Vurnon Anita and Jonas Gutierrez – they’re all desperate to play. We’ve got real competition for places. That bodes well. We’re going to need to freshen it up and change it.”

Both Roberto Martinez and Chris Hughton confirmed they have no new injury concerns ahead of trips to United and Liverpool respectively.

Tony Pulis has talked up the partnership of Marouane Chamakh and Cameron Jerome ahead of his first home match in charge of Palace. The former Stoke boss looks poised to retain the 4-4-2 rolled out at Norwich last week, as he went on to say:

“I really hope we can get him on board because he’s got really good quality. He linked up well with Cameron, and we have to make sure those two have a partnership and a relationship and that they play together as a pair.”

Michael Laudrup has received a significant boost after scans revealed Wilfried Bony will be sidelined for just 10 days with a hamstring injury. The Swansea summer signing was feared to be out for a number of weeks but will be back before the turn of the year – as will Angel Rangel, who misses up to three weeks with a calf injury. Reports in the local press also suggest Michu may be back in training this week, though tomorrow’s game with Newcastle will come too soon.

All this and more has now been updated in the Team News section ahead of this evening’s deadline. Keep an eye on our official Twitter stream for breaking news as Tuesday’s press conferences unfold in what is shaping up to be a busy day for Fantasy managers.

Only being able to select 2 players from each team rather than 3 would be good - and hopefully would mean more variety in teams and a less obvious template.

Bonus points to actually go to the players who played the best 😀

And I'd like a countdown ticker till the deadline like UEFA competitions.

Buying price and selling price should be the same. Also you should be able to change your free transfer as many times as you like over the course of the week, with whatever you have in your team at 11.30 Saturday automatically becomes your transfer. If you have overspent or have too many players from 1 team then your team reverts back to the original team and you lose your transfer. Goalkeepers should get 20pts for a goal and if a player scores a hat-trick they should get a 5 point bonus.

In other words you want a game that allows you to play with transfers every day in order to boost your team value. That would be crazy daft.

Partial credit - you didn't state why you thought this would be an improvement 😉

Good idea though, would you like to have pre-planned transfers too? That would get complicated with price changes though.

Easier to plan transfers, and in case you are unable to/forget to set your lineup. (If you are on Holiday etc.)

Naah, I think price changes makes the game more dynamic - although the fact that you often have to do early transfers due to rises/falls is a bit of a pain!

I think I'd give keepers 5 points for a clean sheet.
They don't get bonus and are more essential to the cs than the defender.
It would make you think a little harder on it.

Some sort of bonus system for DM's a bit like save points for GKers. Maybe one point for every 3 recovered balls?

Obviously it will apply to all outfield players but DM's will tend to rack up more recovered balls than anyone else.

But they would get more than 4pts with recovered balls. 2 or 3 additional points wouldn't be unheard of.

No it wouldn't, but thats say 4-5 points max per game. 2pts for playing 2-3 pts for 10 or 15 recovered balls (which is a lot I think). If they get less than 10 recovered balls then thats only 1 additional point. I don't think its too significant.

Alternatively maybe it could be just 1pt for getting in excess of 10 recovered balls. Then perhaps they can maintain the 1pt for a clean sheet.

4 points a week is a funny one, because nobody really scores that, barring keepers. But if you were only paying 4.5-5.5m for them, that wouldn't be a terrible return. 152 points over the season. I'd probably get a couple - one for bench, one to play.

Be like having a flakey midfielder who gets 8, 2, 2, 9, 1, 3 etc etc except you'd never captain them when they blank!

Well that would be close to a maximum of 4pts a week as it wouldn't be easy to get more than 10 recovered balls a game (2pts) I imagine. However it will make things interesting because its non explosive returns vs those that get explosive returns.

I remember when Parker used to get a lot of baps from the old bonus system and 4-5pts a week wasn't uncommon for him. Yet still few had him in their sides because he wasn't explosive.

Could always play it safe and make it 1pt for every 5 recovered balls. Exactly how many recoveries can be achieved in a game. I certainly don't think it will significantly alter anything.

I like that. Maybe replace the clean sheet point mids get with points for recovered balls, or completed passes. It seems unfair that attacking mids get clean sheet points while contributing less to the clean sheet than the likes of Flamini, Lucas and others who get nothing for their endeovors. Would really add something to the game as currently around a fifth of playing mids are just a no go zone FPL wise.

Presumably this would have to be coupled with a price hike for those midfielders then? Would it make any difference to our teams in that case? I'd rather have R Morrison at 4.5 than Lucas at 6.0 if they're going to score similarly...

Would be around 6ppg without any attacking contribution at all.

Perhaps. Although I think there is a fine balance between what can be achieved through patiently accumulating the FTs and the sheer scope of changes that become possible for no penalty with the additional FT. 2FTs is already FAR more useful than 1FT, so the effect from 2FTs to 3FTs could be exponentially greater, making it immensely powerful. One to think about though.

Not really prices would still only go up or down .1 per day and max of .3 per week.

We would avoid this ludicrous situation where a manager says a player is a doubt (usually mind games against next opponent) he gets flagged, plays anyway and all is confusion.

RVP 700.000 transfers out and only goes down .2 It a F**ing joke and ruins the game imo.

I hate limited transfer games. Sometimes you can't help it as you get loads of injuries and need to replace those players. The 4pt hit acts as sufficiently well to penalise any additional transfers over the allocated transfers and allows people to play the game in numerous ways.

Not to mention FPL will NEVER do that as once you use up your FTs you don't visit the site again and they lose money.

You mean half the doubled points, so an additional 50%. Yeah could work. My reasoning behind the auto sub change is

            1) distinguishes between players scoring from the starting 11 and offers a new tactical level
            2) reduces the luck element of the game
            3) stops the annoying almost childish habit of placing injured/suspended players in their team in an attempt to fool everyone, whilst fooling no one.

Two free transfers per week. Would make the game a lot more fun and you'd be less exposed to "bad luck" in the form of injuries, canceled games, etc. Also would allow us to take more short term punts on players, which means teams would differ more.

I think the current system is good.

UCL fantasyfootball has -2/transfer, which means people often go with 5 or 6 transfers by round because you can so easily profit more than just 2 points from it. There it is better justified, because games being only every two weeks or so, there are far more injuries and other things happening in matches that are not in the game, so you actually have to make more transfers.

But FPL plays every week and you have to put much more thought to your transfers the way it is.

The bonus point system must be ameliorated a lot. It is outrageously bad right now. This will be a long post, and mostly concerns attacking bonus points.

One flaw that is so obvious I don't understand why they didn't see it when making it, is that strikers get more points to their bonus counter from goals than other players. I don't quite understand the reason to this. It basically means that the forward scoring most goals in the game is guaranteed to get the full bonus points.

For example, Tottenham won both Palace and Hull 1-0. Both times Soldado was crap all day long, but scored the only goal from penalty. He got the full 3 bonus points each time, although all he did was succeeding in a finish that is on average succeeded 80% of times. Other than that, he did nothing but wasted a few scoring chances. Meanwhile Lloris kept clean sheet, with 3 and 4 saves respectively, while also playing the "sweeper-keeper" to help his team keep a high defence line and still avoid conceding scoring chances. Lloris got 0 bonus points, both times. That was outrageous. I'm not even Lloris owner, but it is clear he was more essential to the victory and those who had paid good money to have him should have got bonus points too. Now GK's get ridiculously little bonus points.

Another thing we witness here is that too many points are given for scoring penalties. Penalty is converted about 80% of times, so if you score it you are basically just doing what most people would do most of the time. Players should get at least as many points from winning the penalty than converting it, because that is the hardest part. Assist to player winning it and 2 points to one who scored (and -2 if not scored), with assist remaining even if player converts it himself (he still won it). Also: no bonus points for scoring penalties.

Points from scoring penalties should also be the same for all players regardless of the position they play, as that plays no role in getting the scoring chance which is the reason to give more points to defenders than attackers (they get chances less easily).

Also, the clear cut chances created should be valued higher when distributing bonus points. Now it gives, what, 1 point in the bonus counter? That doesn't mean anything. Clear cut chance is a chance that would create goal did the player set up not screw it. Yet you get much less points than for scoring a penalty.

Let me give you a hypothetical example to clarify the problem: Hazard plays Torres through 8 times in the match. Torres fails to score each time he is set alone against the GK. Hazard gets only 8 points in the bonus counter, although only reason he hasn't got 8 assists is that Torres can't score. In the end of the match, Torres scores a penalty, not won by Hazard. He gets 8 points in the bonus counter from the goal, plus the points from the winning goal, and eventually ends up with full 3 bonus points. Anybody can see that Hazard was the best player on the field and Torres the worst. Yet Torres gets 3 bonus points and Hazard 0. And that is stupid.

Okay, that example is a bit extreme, but Soldado's 3 bonus points for scoring penalty were not far from this.

Generally, it is stupid that currently, especially for strikers, bonus points are just given on the top of the points you already got from the goals. Goals are already rewarded with points, you don't need bonus points to reward that.

Bonus points should be used to reward things that are not rewarded by other scoring systems (these being clean sheet, goal, assist, yellow card, red card, penalty save, save). Giving bonus points for things that were already directly rewarded (for example, bonus points for scoring, and negative bonus points for yellow card) is just doubling up what was already given, when the whole idea of the bonus points should be to even slightly reward the performances that do not show in the directly given points.

A squad of 18 would be good. Most people play 3 strikers every week, so you don't actually have a reserve striker. Even a squad of 16 to allow this would be decent. This way if you have say John Terry playing and he gets subbed after 62 mins your sub defender (if playing) could score you points for the remainder of the match.

I agree with RVP's point , most transferred out player and he fall by only 0.2 . If he had fallen by say 0.8 or something then we would have another aspect of the game rather than a template of roo/sua/aguero
There's a ambiguity about price changes ,so I ask for TRANSPARENCY from authorities of FPL to clear the rules regarding price change .
Now sturridge falls more than 300% in a day , he drops 0.1 but giroud and negredo benefiting from this rise say more than 100% and they rise 0.1 each. This is bewildering situation .

If they can remove the ambiguity around bonus points by allotting them through stats which are highly controversial themselves , then they should state the rules regarding price changes CLEARLY .
Also,Everybody who is playing the game doen't know about TotalFPL and FFS .So its authorities's responsibility to clearly lay down the rule on main site . PERIOD

Change it from 1 point for 3 saves (and 1 BPS for every X blocks, and so on) to something that rewards each individual occurence.

It annoys me no end that 0 saves equals 2 saves, and 3 saves equals 5 saves.

The easiest way to do it within the current point system would be to switch to decimal points.

What's the template formation going to be before Xmas?

With Silva, Walcott and Michu etc coming back from injuries and possibly finding their form. Would you consider moving to 3-5-2 or 4-4-2 with only 2 heavy hitter strikers? Most likely Suarez - Aguero, Rooney in the mix.. and rotating the 3rd striker with cheapie midfielder

      Is it worth replacing Boruc?

I currently have Boruc - Mignolet Combo (like many others on here, I'm sure)

If I did Boruc to Howard my goal keeping rotation between now and Jan WC (GW's 14-22) would be:
NOR, WHM, FUL, CAR, SUN, SOU, HULL, NOR, AVL, (pretty awesome fixtures)

I would play Howard whenever Everton were at home -GW's 16,18, 19 and 21.

Liverpool's fixtures in these weeks are: tot, man c, chel, stoke (very tough fixtures!)

So, Q1: Is t worth a 4point hit? Will Howard outscore Mignolet by more than four points with:
      - FUL, SUN, SOU, NOR, instead of tot, man c, chel, stoke? (I think the answer is probably yes)

Q2: My selling price for Boruc is 4.7. Howard costs 5.6. Is it worth the extra 0.9?

      Thoughts appreciated.

I'm keeping as have Mignolet. When Liverpool's fixtures stiffen though I'll probably get a budget goalkeeper to see me through to the Jan wildcard. May just ride it out though.

He's 5.0 now , he will possibly end up back at 4.5/ 4.4 come jan Wc , if you've nothing to do get Davis 3.9 and he might give you a game or two.

That's a lot of money to have tied up in Goalkeepers. If you want to rotate Mignolet, I'd save a million and get Marshall - his fixtures for 16/18/19/21, also all at home, are WBA, SOU, SUN, WHM.

looking at your team, id be tempted to keep sess and actualy spend some money on that horrible defence lol.

after this gmwk, sess may outscore coutinho/gerrard and is 2m cheaper. that 2m should be spent upgrading your defence.

(...) But Wenger insists he will give Ramsey a rest when the time is right.

"I have to treat him like all the players and give them a breather when they need it" said Wenger. " I don't want to put too much pressure on his shoulders and we have a game that is based on team play.

        C)

I'd get rid of Tekkers but now that S'ton has a bunch of injuries in the squad, I'd give him one more game.

Very solid team by the way.

I know Ozil missed the first 3 gameweeks - was he playing for Real in August?

Surely he has had less football then the others?

Ok guys, Rate the sh*t out of this team please.

        Migs
        Terry - Dawson - Shaw - Kosc
        Pablo - Oscar - Rambo
        Suaz(c) - Roon(vc) - Kun

        Bench: RavMo Whitts Chester
        0FT & 0.6 in the bank

I was finding it too difficult to choose between RavMo & Dawson so I flipped a coin. Dawson won. Still not convinced whether its the right decision or not.

FTB Pro's 10 Most Improved PL Players:

        1. Aaron Ramsey
        2. Vincent Kompany
        3. Daniel Agger
        4. Oscar
        5. Gary Cahil
        6. Adam Lallana
        7. Gareth McAuley
        8. Lucas Leiva
        9. Kieran Gibbs
        10. Pablo Zabaleta

        - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

I found it interesting that they did not include Rooney, but then again, he hasn't improved from his prime form, he has just improved from his worst form. I guess that is where the difference lies.

        Odd list non-the less.

The news about the Southampton injuries means I will save my transfer, not as much of a risk of JWP not starting now. Wouldn't want to bench him for a Whittingham or Morrison for this game
