Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 15 – Saturday

Luis Suarez serves up yet another scintillating home display as Liverpool sweep aside West Ham at Anfield. Yohan Cabaye nets the winner at Old Trafford but is set to serve a one-match ban, Palace’s revival under Tony Pulis picks up pace, Leroy Fer steers Norwich to victory at The Hawthorns, whilst Andre Schurrle scores twice in a rare start for Chelsea before limping off injured.

Suarez at the Summit
Runaway winner of the Gameweek 15 Captain Poll, the Liverpool forward once again justified our collective show of faith with a goal, two assists and maximum bonus points in a 4-1 win over West Ham. A 15-point haul against the Hammers was Suarez’ sixth set of double figures in just 10 appearances – since returning from suspension in Gameweek 6, he has now played a part in 21 of his side’s 29 goals, finding the net 14 times in addition to supplying seven assists. Despite missing the first five matches of the campaign, the Uruguayan’s stunning form saw him finally climb to the top of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) standings last night, with an average of 11.4 points per game – with trips to Spurs, City and Chelsea in the next four, though, his incredible consistency looks set to be tested.

Steve Gerrard owners were left sweating over the midfielder’s fitness after he was subbed off just before the hour mark. Post-match, Brendan Rodgers confirmed his captain was forced off with a hamstring injury and will be assessed over the next 48 hours. The Reds boss also praised Mamadou Sakho – the Frenchman stood in for the ill Daniel Agger and found the net against the Hammers, with Rodgers admitting “he looked like he wanted to take his opportunity”. With a single clean sheet since Gameweek 3, though, in addition to the above-mentioned schedule, Fantasy faith in Liverpool’s defence could barely be any lower right now.

Cabaye Sinks United but Topples off the Tightrope
Newcastle atoned for their midweek loss at Swansea by handing United their second successive 1-0 home defeat courtesy of a Yohan Cabaye strike. Alan Pardew’s decision to drop Shola Ameobi and move to 4-3-3 saw Yoan Gouffran and Moussa Sissoko flank Loic Remy up top but it was their compatriot Cabaye who proved the difference, firing home the winner just after the hour mark. Since being handed his first start of the season in Gameweek 4, Cabaye’s consistency means he has never gone more than a single Gameweek without producing returns – he’s now scored or assisted in seven of the last 11 league matches but an eighth minute yellow card means he’s set to serve a one-match ban for next weekend’s home game against Southampton before returning for the Gameweek 17 trip to Palace.

Moyes’ Home Woes Continue
The return of Robin Van Persie made no difference to the champions, who have now scored a single goal in the last three matches in front of their own fans. With eight Old Trafford games already played, David Moyes’ side have scored just eight times – an average of one goal per home game is better than just two sides, Crystal Palace and Aston Villa. Last season, United’s home haul of 45 goals was second only to Arsenal, with Van Persie proving a reliable captaincy contender in almost every Old Trafford match but his side’s inability to break down opponents is proving a major headache for Moyes. It’s almost a relief, then, for their under-fire manager that three of the next four matches are on the road – with Wayne Rooney back on board alongside the Dutchman, trips to Villa, Hull and Norwich bode well for a return to scoring ways.

Aguero Ticks Over at St Mary’s
After picking up the midweek points at the Hawthorns, City’s frailties on the road returned to haunt them yesterday afternoon. Manuel Pellegrini’s side were expected to comfortable take care of injury-hit Southampton but had to settle for no more than a draw, with Sergio Aguero once again their goal hero. The Argentine’s tenth minute opener takes his tally to the season for 12 goals – equalling his haul for 2012/13, though he’s managed to achieve this in 1,069 minutes compared to 1,944 minutes last time around, a clear sign of his improvement under Chilean’s guidance. With Suarez set for some tough road trips, many may turn to Aguero for the armband; he has three home games in the next four but those include the visit of Arsenal and Liverpool, suggesting out short-term captaincy decisions may be a little trickier than usual.

Eagles on the Rise
It’s two home wins in a row now for Crystal Palace under the guidance of new boss Tony Pulis. Having netted against West Ham in midweek, Marouane Chamakh looks a man reborn after finding the net once more in the 2-0 triumph over Cardiff, whilst strike-partner Cameron Jerome also grabbed a goal as Pulis’ 4-4-2 formation overpowered the Bluebirds. From a Fantasy perspective, the focus on Palace’s defensive assets will surely increase after yesterday’s result – they’ve now conceded just one goal in the last five Gameweeks in an extraordinary turnaround in resilience. Trips to Chelsea and City, allied with a visit of Newcastle in the net four will certainly prove sterner tests but Palace’s home/away rotation with Cardiff looks eye-catching all the way up to Gameweek 27 – Dean Moxey’s owners will be awaiting an injury update after the left-back was subbed off midway through the first period with a hamstring problem.

Fer’s Eye for Goal Continues
The Dutchman grabbed a goal and assist as Norwich recovered from their midweek annihilation at Anfield in impressive style. While our Spot the Differential pick Nathan Redmond chipped in with his third assist in the last five in the 2-0 Hawthorns win, Fer’s strike means he has now found the net three times over the same period, having also notched against West Ham and Newcastle last month. Now up to 59 points in FPL (seven less than Chelsea’s Oscar, for example) Fer now braces himself for a schedule that sees the Canaries entertain Swansea and Sunderland and travel to Fulham and Palace in the next five – at 5.8, he remains a huge differential, with an ownership under 1%, and has started each of the last 14, having been suspended for the season opener against Everton.

Schurrle at the Double
The German proved an unlikely source of goals for Chelsea in his first start since Gameweek 9. Schurrle had been handed just 30 minutes off the bench over the past five league matches and had seemed a peripheral figure under Jose Moutinho but vindicated his recall by bagging a brace at the Britannia. Indeed, Schurrle has now scored three times in his last two starts for the Blues – bearing in mind Juan Mata has yet to open his account and Willian has netted just once, the German’s recent bench-warming duties seem a little unjust. Forced off a calf problem, Schurrle’s injury situation needs monitoring before looking to take a punt on the 7.1 priced midfielder – yesterday’s showing will surely have earned him another start if his withdrawal proves merely precautionary. At the back, though, Mourinho has plenty to ponder – his side have conceded three in each of the last two games and have a single clean sheet in 10 now; the Chelsea manager blamed “individual mistakes” for yet another poor defensive showing.

Potters Midfield in the Points
As many as four Stoke midfielders picked up attacking returns as a 3-2 win over Chelsea helped them to a second victory in the last 12 league fixtures. While the likes of Jon Walters, Marko Arnautovic and Oussama Assaidi all produced, substitute Stephen Ireland was the main protagonist – climbing off the bench to replace Charlie Adam in the role in “the hole”, the former Villa bagged a goal and assist to suggest that, at 4.6, he has the potential to provide us with a real budget option; all the more so if Adam fails to recover from the problem that forced his withdrawal on 18 minutes. With Hull, Villa and Newcastle in the next three, Mark Hughes’ side will have little fear in light of their battling display against the Blues – they will need to make do without Walters for their visit to the KC next weekend, though; he picked up his fifth yellow of the season yesterday and will serve a one-match ban.

Paulinho Starts to Deliver
The Brazilian had started the last two in “the hole” for Tottenham but despite being shifted into a more withdrawn berth, he still managed to get amongst the goals in the 2-1 win at Sunderland. Paulinho has scored just twice this term but his ability to bomb forward into the box and fire efforts on goal suggests he may still yet prove to be a viable Fantasy force this season – he has registered at least eight more attempts in the area than any other midfielder but has proven woefully unable to finish off the multitude of chances teed up by team-mates. With an assist also accrued in his last three, the summer signing – now down to 6.7 in FPL – is the only midfielder to have started every league match under Andre Villas-Boas and may yet be worth a punt ahead of three home games in the next four.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Feel like I can't miss out on Lakuku but he's got to outscore Rooney. Difficult one. Is Hazard the premium midfielder of choice over the next few weeks ?

With a great run of fixtures ahead (FUL, swa, SUN, SOT, stk, NOR) Fantasy Managers thoughts are turning to Toffee cover in December.

What Everton players do you currently have, and who are set to bring in over the next week or so?

Do you think double Everton Defence is the way to go, in a hope to reap the rewards as many did with Southampton earlier in the season?

Currently on Lukaku and Jagielka, who I'll be getting next week.

A lot depends on Rooney. I could get Rooney and double Everton defence but I think I prefer Lukaku Jags and a big hitting mid

        Almost in the same boat.

Keeping Rooney, adding double Everton defence and Hazard seem like the obvious route for me. But Lakuku could go mad. Hopefully Rooney gets injured mid week and solves the problem!

It's a pity Baines is out as he would be a nice option for me .
Lukaka and Coleman (in) - enough I believe they won't do as well as we all seem to think , they'll concede against the poorer teams and lose 1/2 the Everwigan affect will kick in IMO.

Distin at his price seems to make the most sense but I'm a little concerned that he might miss the odd game from now until the end of the season. Who recons he is nailed-on? Will Martinez go with 3 at the back?

just putting my ten cents in

ive had coleman for pretty much the whole season, and now im doubling up with Jagielka, as I think he will outscore Distin over this period by quite some margin.

Lukaku is an excellent pick atm, but Rooney Aguero Suarez is just too good for me too ignore... Man U will hopefully start to click soon, and Rooney is quite simply in the form of his life, so im happy to keep him!

    A. Benteke -> Lukaku
    or
    B. Lampard -> Mirallas

What's the best option? Lukaku could destroy fulham defence but I like Mirallas prospect

      A.
because when you do B, you still have Benteke which is still out of form and playing Man Utd. Lampard might be rotated but he constantly become a good prospect (vs Palace, in home).

    Morning,

Well three early transfers for me Out :

    Ozil, Townsend, Zabs

In : Oscar , Silva, Distin

I appreciate it's risky and I'm gutted to be losing ozil , but it allows me to field three heavy hitters : Oscar, Silva, Walcott and one out of Barkley / Morrison - though they will be leaving shortly

I think silva will play against arse and likewise Oscar after Chelsea losing to stoke.....if he doesn't then Michu or Couthino will come in place

    Today’s one is from Tinkerman

    Time To Cheapen Our Defences?

He says “The last few weeks have seen clean sheets for Palace, Cardiff, Newcastle, Norwich, Sunderland and Villa and with plenty of favourable games coming up for them, is it time to shift to cheap defenders and pump some more of our budget into our neglected midfields?”

He also notes that the Palace/Cardiff rotation is particularly good.

I transferred in Burner and Ward in the last two weeks in time for their cleanies and with Hazard hitting form, Wally slowly coming back, Silva and Michu not far away from fitness and Coutinho threatening to hit form, it was timely!

My midfield is very neglected as well:

Rambo, Sess, Brady, Ravmo, Kim 😆

I recently downgraded Shaw and Murner to Ward and Burner and I'm thinking of Kosc > Distin. Not sure if I will go as far as to switch back to a 3-4-3 though as I have Zaba and Walker too and plan to play 4 the the back most weeks.

I guess if Coutinho/Gerrard (if not badly injured), Silva, Michu, Hazard and Wally or start hitting form, I will have to downgrade somewhere.

First, heading into the season I was vehemently against the 'uber' philosophy.
Last year Reading's backline scared me for life... as I still wake up screaming 'Gorkšs' from time to time.

However, as the Xmas season has rolled along HUL & CPL have certainly offered great value for the money.

That said, come the JAN WC it'll be back to my tried & true 'two heavy hitters & one rotating pair' in the back-line.

          This sounds reasonable.

I certainly won't be going with 5 übers any time soon, but I didn't have any 4m defenders since I sold Chester when he first got injured

The way the BPS are being awarded I feel that 4 at the back is a completely valid strategy now.

Especially come the New Year, as I read a stat somewhere that, 20% more CL are kept in the second half of the season...

Hey Guys here is a brief analysis of some rotating fixtures for the busy Christmas period and into January. If enough people are interested I will post my analysis of the Midfielders and some forward differentials/interesting things to note.
    Defence
    Wes Brown and Martin Olsson/Turner
(SWA, NOR, FUL, car, AST, ful, HUL, STO, car)
    - Wes Brown gathered at least 2 bonus every time Sunderland has kept a clean sheet
    - Olsson has played the full 90 in the last 9 straight matches
    - Even though Norwich have been prone to conceding lots of goals away from home they have held out Stoke and West Brom in front of their own fans
Billy Jones and Ciaran Clark/Ron Vlaar
(car, HUL, CRY, SWA, NEW, sou, EVE, LIV, WBA,)
    - The two sides combined have taken part in 5 Nil all draws
    - Jones has scored 48 more PPI points than Olsson yet has started 2 less games- he has also scored more than McCauley
    - West Brom have won 2 out of their last 3 games against Liverpool and also held Everton at Goodison earlier this year
    - Vlaar has produced bonus points in every away clean sheet for Villa this year
    Ben Turner and Ben Davies
(WBA, EVE, SOU, SUN, CITY, WHAM, TOT, FUL)
    - The two Welsh sides rotate home and away right until GW38
    - Turner has received Bonus points for 2 out of 4 clean sheets Cardiff have earned and is just 4.1
    - Ben Davies PPI is 198-39 higher than any other Swansea defender, even though he has scored a couple of goals he has also missed a few games

Cabaye will be back next GW.
i think Gerrard only have minor injury as it stands, he could be back this week or next.
i still confident Mirallas is the first choice. Deulofeu won't starts every week.

Interesting cheers. I'll probably wildcard first week of Jan so I'd only need Oscar to do better in a few games, which he certainly can.

I want to keep Mozilla and Rambo.

I just noticed in the few weeks I've had him I've lost lost 0.4 on mozilla despite 22 points in the last 2!

    Anyone considering Suarez-> Lukaku?

Lukaku has three home fixtures in the next four where Suarez has tot che mci. If Gaerrard's out for that stretch the delivery he gets won't be so good either.

haha no! I'm a pool fan and am the first to admit Suarez is one of the best. But if Henderson Sterling and Moses are where the service will come from the points will probably fall a lot. IMO.

Pretty resounding no then! I'm seriously considering it if Lukaku puts in a show today, it'd free up the funds to bring in another heavy hitting mid.

some views from @AnfieldIndex, probably might help:

"Against Hull only one of our 3 most threatening players started - Suarez. We struggled. When at least 2 of the 3 play we do well. So that's Suarez/Sturridge, Suarez/Coutinho, Coutinho/Sturridge. Proven to do well with those. All 3 not played together for long periods."

in this case, they still have Coutinho/Suarez.

i'm not say i'm agree but i think this is an interesting point to consider for you.

    current def lineup-Gjohnson/Terry/Williams/Ward/Rosenoir
Was thinking is Jagielka worth the extra 0.8 over Distin for the 1-2 extra Bps or shud i go wid distin as its straight swap wid Rosenoir(For jags i vil need to remove williams/gjohnson)?dont right now have cash issues but never know when u need that extra bits...
    Cheers!

I am in same situation. Only concern is distin getting rested for alcaraz over busy period due to his age. Im .1 short of jag. But can get coleman whshould be pretty free from rotation

Actually the state of both City & Chelsea defs, if Walcott starts today, he might well be the perfect Gerrard replacement.
