The Weekend Team News

There’s plenty of updates for Fantasy managers this morning after a hectic day of press conferences. Ahead of the Third Round of FA Cup action later today, Emmanuel Adebayor has recovered from the cramp that forced him off against United in midweek. Daniel Sturridge will return within a fortnight. Mesut Ozil faces a late fitness test before the north London derby. Yohan Cabaye is ruled out of Newcastle’s game with Cardiff, Ravel Morrison could return for West Ham, Sunderland stopper Kieran Westwood needs shoulder surgery, whilst Manuel Pellegrini expects City’s injury worries to lessen soon:

Adebayor Fit Following Cramp Bout
Tim Sherwood had plenty of injury news in yesterday’s media briefing. The Spurs boss revealed Andros Townsend, Jermain Defoe and Lewis Holtby have recovered from recent injuries and are “in contention” for the north London derby. Erik Lamela, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Kyle Naughton join the likes of Paulinho, Jan Vertonghen and Younes Kaboul on the sidelines – the new Spurs boss admitted it “will be a while” behind the latter two return to defence. Sherwood also rolled out an update on Emmanuel Adebayor after the Togo international was stretchered off against United in midweek, revealing the forward is in his plans to face his former club:

“I spoke to Ade after United and he said he cramped up in all areas, but thankfully it has settled down and he’s ready to perform.”

Ozil Back in Training for Gunners
Arsene Wenger has confirmed Nicklas Bendtner, Kieran Gibbs and Aaron Ramsey will all miss the derby clash with Tottenham later today. The Gunners boss revealed Olivier Giroud has recovered from the ankle problem that kept him out of the midweek win over Cardiff but is now “90%” likely to miss out through illness. Mesut Ozil requires a late fitness test but, despite his manager suggesting he expected the German to miss out, Ozil was later pictured in first-team training. Wenger went on to dismiss any notions of rest and rotation:

“I will only rest the players who are on the fringes of injuries or are very tired. But that will be very restricted to a minimal number of players. I just consider that it is our next game – we are Arsenal Football Club and we want to win the next game, that is vital for us. In this case I consider it a top level Premier League game, that means I have to play a team who has a chance to win a top level Premier League game.”

Distin and Jagielka Still Sidelined for Toffees
Roberto Martinez has confirmed he will be without the services of first-choice central defensive pairing Sylvain Distin and Phil Jagielka for today’s showdown with QPR. The Toffees boss is expected to partner Antolin Alcaraz with John Stones in the centre of defence once again and will assess the fitness of Tony Hibbert before deciding whether to ring the changes.

Cabaye and Krul Concerns for Pardew
The selection worries continue for Newcastle after Yohan Cabaye was ruled out of the game against Cardiff. The Frenchman has been snapped up by over 300,000 FPL managers in the last week but they’ll be hoping his absence is just a “cup injury” after his manager admitted:

“Yohan Cabaye’s injured. He picked up an injury on Wednesday, I’d have liked to have subbed him, but I didn’t have any left… I’m a little bit concerned about my goalkeeper. He’s doubtful. “

Morrison and Carroll Back in Training for Hammers
Sam Allardyce has revealed Ravel Morrison has returned to training after missing out through a groin strain. The midfielder could feature against Nottingham Forest this Sunday, though the likes of Andy Carroll, Winston Reid, James Collins, James Tomkins, Ricardo Vaz Te and Mark Noble are all out for the injury-hit club. Big Sam rolled out an update on Carroll’s progress – the forward has now returned to first-team training and will be eased back into the fold once his fitness is up to scratch:

“Andy will be assessed after every training session and he’ll be out training with the lads on Friday, which he has done for a few days now. Andy playing football is something we have to take big care about, because he is fit from the injury but not match-fit. If he or any player plays too many games too soon, it can only promote more injuries – not in the same area but in different areas in terms of muscle fatigue and strains. I have to be very careful about when I play him and how often I play him. As soon as we can, he’ll start from the bench and we’ll arrange games behind closed doors to get his match-fitness up, as we will sooner or later with Ricardo Vaz Te and Winston Reid, who are both getting closer to training. Andy is the nearest at the moment.”

Sturridge Nears Reds Return
Liverpool assistant boss Colin Pascoe rolled out a welcome injury update yesterday afternoon. The Welshman confirmed he expects Daniel Sturridge, Joe Allen and Jon Flanagan all to be available for selection within a fortnight’s time as the Merseysiders’ treatment room finally begins to empty – with a Gameweek 22 home clash against Villa looking likely for their returns:

“He’s out there training and continuing his rehab. He’s looking good, but we’ve just got to assess it day-by-day and hopefully it won’t be too long. Daniel will hopefully be back within a week or 10 days, Joe Allen within 10 days or a fortnight. There’s Jon Flanagan as well. They’ll all be coming back.”

Jones Sidelined for Baggies
The right-back remains unavailable for selection after picking up a head knock in the New Year’s Day win over Newcastle. Jones was subbed off at the break following a collision with keeper Ben Foster and was the main point of note from Keith Downing’s press conference:

“Billy Jones had a slight concussion after the collision with Ben. He’s also got a nasty cut above his eye so he won’t be involved tomorrow. Victor Anichebe still has an ongoing groin problem. We’ve got a few bumps and bruises but we’ve got a big squad to choose from.”

Young Sidelined for United
David Moyes has confirmed Ashley Young is set to be sidelined with a shoulder injury sustained against Tottenham in midweek. The United boss is uncertain over the length of absence in a day that saw Wayne Rooney pictured leaving hospital after undergoing further tests on a groin injury. With United set to play Swansea on Sunday before a Capital One Cup semi-final against Sunderland on Tuesday, their manager confirmed he plans to rotate his squad over the next two matches, though once again was reluctant to discuss the fitness of Robin van Persie:

“We’ve got a few injuries and one is [from] the challenge the keeper made on Ashley Young. It’s a shoulder injury and we’re not sure exactly how long he’s going to be out yet. We’ve got some other injuries as well that we’ll just need to look at and see how they are over the next few days…Robin’s coming on but we’ll let you know when he’s ready. We definitely will [rotate players] because of the two games. It’s the same for both clubs so there can’t be many complaints but I don’t think it’s right to be asking footballers to play on Sunday and then Tuesday. They did it over Christmas and I totally understand that and the reasons why. But it’s a bit harder to accept at such short notice here.”

Pellegrini Hopeful of Imminent Returns
Ahead of a cup showdown against Blackburn, the City boss confirmed Jack Rodwell has joined Sergio Aguero, Micah Richards and Martin Demichelis on the sidelines with a hamstring injury. Pellegrini also expects Stevan Jovetic to remain out for the Rovers clash but is optimistic that the forward, along with rest of his injured players, will soon be available, with a certain Argentine closing in on a comeback, according to his manager:

“I don’t think he will be back against Blackburn but by next week he will be fit, also Martin Demichelis and Micah Richards, then we will see how many days Sergio Aguero must be out.”

Osvaldo Slapped with Three-Match Ban
Southampton’s summer signing from AS Roma is suspended for the next three games after being found guilty of improper conduct during the Gameweek 16 clash with Newcastle. Osvaldo will miss today’s FA Cup match against Burnley and the upcoming league games with West Brom and Sunderland. The Saints will assess Nathaniel Clyne and James Ward-Prowse after both picked up knocks in Wednesday’s home loss against Chelsea.

Poyet Pessimistic on Westwood Chances
Vito Mannone’s chances of retaining the Sunderland keeper’s jersey look to have taken a turn for the better. Black Cats boss Gus Poyet is quoted by the local press as suggesting Kieran Westwood requires shoulder surgery before taking to the field again, going on to say “I can’t see him playing much this season”. Poyet is expected to hand new left-back Marcos Alonso his debut against Carlisle after snapping up the former Bolton defender on loan for the rest of the season.

You need to ditch Coloccini first IMO. I would replace with someone cheap-ish (probably Ward @ 4.1). That would free up 0.8 which would allow you to upgrade Cowie to a better rotating option for Sterling (someone like Barkley or Januzaj) next week.

Will welcome advice on how to improve my defence line given the rest of the team. Coleman & Mert are nailed on for me (had Coleman since gw1).

With the fab four in midfield untouchable, I need to find the best 3 defender combo in the 4M-4.5M mark that can rotate to support Coleman & Mert.

Clyne & Vlaar (you already have Clyne) - rotates till the end. Chester could be a cheapy bench-fodder. Or, Ward if you can afford, since Chester have weak fixtures.

Looking at a WC team (swapping Silva & Negredo for Erikson & Aguero) I was looking at Ward, Chester and Shaw. Shaw attracts me based on opportunity to transfer to bigger club (no offence to Saints fans) in Jan window.

I am considering him for GW21 & 22 at least. But since you've spotted his potential as well, what do you think are his chances of starting in GW21? He didn't start GW20 but guessing it's a rest (don't watch much of Southampton). He definitely does get involved when Southampton are on song.

    The Midfield Big Guns.

With the January wildcard now upon us a, how many BIG Hitters will you be looking to flood you midfield with?

Who will your preferred picks be (e.g Oscar, Walcott, Ozil, Silva, Hazard, Toure etc) and why ?

Will you dare to get 4 Big Guns in there and go lightweight elsewhere in your team?

There a lot of other big hitting mids I am considering:
        Yaya Ozil Oscar Gerrard.

So definitely 4 or maybe even 5. Lallana and Erisken could be my 5th mid

Yaya and Hazzard are now essentials for me. Yaya is just consistent returner, may not set the world alight with double points, but gets consistent returns of more than 4pts. Hazzard seems to be the creative element for Chelsea now (I was initially in the Oscar camp).

Silva rotation concerns me so am flexible. He is however class.
Walcott is a consistent threat but injury prone I fear.

I'm hanging on to Barkley for my 5th....what I see impresses me but he always see s to be a pass or shot behind the points.

Erikson looks like he could do well under Sherwood with Ade and Soldado running the channels. Likewise Cabaye if he keeps a free range.

Suarez and Aguero up top are a must.

That's what I just posted below.

Everyone can afford 3 Big Guns (e.g Walcott, Hazard, Silva)

The 4th spot is strictly a Lallana, Eriksen, Cabaye vs Yaya, Ozil, Oscar

And using the spare cash to upgrade a defender.

I have Walcott, Silva & Hazard currently as my big hitters and i don't think i will change much from my template of 3 big mids, 1 mid price mid and 1 cheap bench fodder when i play my wildcard. Eriksen/Cabaye/Lallana all provide good options in mid price bracket.

There are much more points in forward positions with Suarez and Aguero when returns must haves. Also in defense Coleman & Koscielny will stay for me.

Sometimes, I find it convenient to use the process of elimination to decide. While in this case, may be convenient to think what players have potential to give you sleepless nights by not owning them?

I'd say Walcott, Hazard (whilst on form) and atleast one City mid. Prefer Silva over Yaya mainly cos he's 4.7% with a higher upside once Kun returns.

      If I could (which I don't think I can)

      I would go . . .

      Silva (over Yaya)
      Hazard (over Oscar)
      Walcott and Ozil.

I think the jump to Ozil maybe a push to far, so in which case I think Lallana looks the best pick at the mid price over Eriksen (still unproven) and Cabaye.

My value isn't great, so perhaps it will allow me a def of...

You can save money with Ward over Clyne. Or Turner over Clyne.

I think selling Coleman would be a mistake. With clean sheets so hard to come by, he's one of the few defenders that offers a reasonably high clean sheet potential, and attacking threat in open play.

It'll be 3-5-2 option for me for the rest of the season and 3-4-3 as a fall back

Walcott - Hazard - Silva - Lallana and either Barkley or more probably Januzaj

I can't see another forward other than Aguero and Suarez contributing more points than Rodriguez when and if I play him nor outscoring any of the midfield players when I go for five.

Rooney was the idea 3rd striker but I don't trust Moyes (hence my reluctance for Januzaj even though he is the difference to winning and losing for ManU)

      Morning Evs

I'm looking at Walcott/Silva/Hazard/Lallana (or Eriksen) and a cheapie who knows where the net is but will rarely play for me as my 5th mid.

Not going cheap up top either. Suarez/Ade/JRod for now with Aguero money in the bank to replace one of Ade/JRod depending on whether I go Lallana/Ade or Eriksen/JRod for the longer term.

Form and fixtures will dictate who my 3rd defender (up to 5.5) is to go with Mert, Coleman, Chester and Ward. Currently it's Azpi

        Morning 🙂

Same as my thinking in the mf, although I would love Ozil as my 4th.

Coleman is an interesting one, as I can sell for 6.2m and have only had for about 5 weeks (not an early adopter) I was considering offloading him for funds elsewhere.

Cleansheets are a little hard to come by of late, and I'm not sure we can rely on a goal from him every other week.

You're lucky to be in that position with Coleman. I've had since day one so can't afford to drop him (not that I want to!)

Cleanies have been hard to come by for Everton over the Xmas/New Year period but I am hoping that as the games are more spread out they will go back to getting regular cleanies. Especially when Jags returns to stiffen up the middle

Injures/depth have hurt them. Baines and Alcaraz were out for most of December, Jags and Distin succumbed to injury at the back end of it but when all are back they should be solid again soon enough. Bad weather = more cleanies!

I normally get mid price 4th and then bench fodder as my 5th player.

at least Walcott Silva Hazard for me. If a viable option for a sub 7.5 striker comes into play (like Ba if he gets a loan to WHU, Carroll if he's back, Lambert etc) might add in Oscar ahead of Cabaye to those 3.

Don't really like Adebayor at the moment, but could change my mind by GW23.

I like this and think it's the template for the time being.
In my opinion the fifth mid and defence are perhaps where serious FPLers will wisely select differentials, with so many goalie and two way rotations looking good at the moment.

The biggest guns are needed upfront. A lot depends on Rooney and the return of Aguero. If Rooney's double digit scoring continues then the priority has to be a SAR front line.

I prefer a balance of 2 heavies in midpark and 1-2 heavies in defence. My TV prevents me from three midpark heavies and I've decided t go w/out Hazard.

It might seem like a case of fudging figures here Evs, but in the 10 games since Suarez returned, Gerrard's points per game is better than what Silva has returned over the season.

I'm considering big 4 at midfield with JRod up front.

With their form and fixtures, I'm putting my money on Southampton to do well for the next 6-10 GWs,

Already having Boruc, I prefer JRod over Lallana for Southampton attack.

It will allow me to get Gerrard as my 4th midfielder. Only 1 blank after Suarez return is superb.

Yeah surprised not more people going for him. 7th best FWD in the game and ~6m price.

Allow me to get 3 big at the back (that or a decent rotation because of Arsenal's fixture) as well which is nice.

RVP in WC? Who will get more points?

    a) RVP + Mutch/Bannan
    b) Hazard + Lukaku (or some mid-priced forward)
    c) Hazard + Gerrard (with bench forward, like Berahino) ?

I seem to like the last option, it gives you a very strong bench to start with. You can always hope for some points.

its because a player has to rise by 0.2 before you can sell them for profit. So lets say you bought Ramsey at 5.5 and he rose to 5.7, if you decide to sell him now you will only get 5.6.

When are you pulling the trigger on the Wildthing ?

Im happy waiting for the likes of aguero, winston and sturridge. All should be there come end of the wildcard and should have time to assess their form.

When are you planning to your WC Evs?

I'm planning to punt on RVP on GW 23 while Aguero is getting fit.

A draw for either Arsenal or Villa would mean no MNF next week

Walcott(c) or Suarez(c) could be decided tonight

    A couple of questions :

A.) do we think Cahill will be nailed on for the rest of the season?

B.) anyone see Negredo as a viable alternative for Aguero? Once Sergio is back if of course

I'm now thinking leading up to GW22 will be the big wildcard week. This week hasn't seen anything like as many as I'd expected, and looking on here everyone seems to have decided on their WCs, and (predictably) they all look similar, so I don't expect many people to wait until GW24 before pulling the trigger once they see the cost value of this template team rise. Of course, a lot still depends on when Aguero comes back.
