Scout Notes – Gameweek 22 – Sunday

Samuel Eto’o hits a hat-trick as Chelsea ease past United at the Bridge. Nemanja Vidic is set for a three-match ban after a late red card adds to David Moyes’ woes. Emmanuel Adebayor is at the double as Spurs win at Swansea, with Wilfried Bony amongst the goals once again for the beaten Welsh side:

Eto’o Treble Sinks United
The Cameroon international was handed the lone striker role against the champions, with Fernando Torres dropping to the bench after back-to-back league starts. Eto’o more than justified Jose Mourinho’s decision by notching all the home side’s goals in the 3-1 win and, with the maximum bonus safely secured, registered a 17-point return in his manager’s 100th Premier League win as the Blues’ boss. After the game, Mourinho revealed Torres is “out for weeks” with knee ligament damage after being forced off as a late sub and subsequently talked up Demba Ba’s prospects – bearing in mind the latter has been named in the first XI just twice this season, though, Eto’o will feel he’s firmly in the driving seat for a regular run of starts now. With West Ham and Newcastle rolling up to the Bridge in the next three, the Cameroon international may well be worth a flutter – further analysis shows he has produced 51 points over his six home starts this season, drawing a blank only once in front of the Blues faithful when handed a chance from the kick-off.

Cole Back on the Blues Bench as Ivanovic Returns
Ashley Cole’s run of four straight starts came to an end as the Serbian recovered from injury to take his place in the XI. Whilst Javier Hernandez’ late consolation prevented the home side from registering a fifth clean sheet in six, the versatile Cesar Azpilicueta is likely to remain in many a wildcard plan after he shifted over to left-back at Cole’s expense – the Spaniard has now started all but one of the last 12 league matches and, at 5.3, is the cheapest on offer amongst Mourinho’s regulars. Gary Cahill also staked a claim for consideration with a 10-point haul yesterday. The former Bolton man supplied a pair of assists and has started 10 of the last 12, though the arrival of Nemanja Matic is likely to see David Luiz fielded less often in central midfield and, with the latter perhaps offering Cahill increased competition at centre-half, Azpilicueta looks a safer option right now.

Moyes’ Worries Increase At the Back
Devoid of front two Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie yet again for yesterday’s clash, the United boss also has concerns at the other end of the pitch to contend with. Moyes watched Patrice Evra limp out of proceedings early in the second period, whilst Nemanja Vidic is also set to miss the next three games in all competitions after his late dismissal for a foul on Eden Hazard. With Rio Ferdinand still doubtful with a knee problem, United’s options are stretched at the back – Moyes looks likely to partner Jonny Evans with Phil Jones or Chris Smalling for next weekend’s visit of Cardiff but, with the champions managing just two clean sheets in the last nine at Old Trafford, the Bluebirds will fancy their chances of finding the net.

Adebayor at the Double
The Togo international plundered the points once again as his Fantasy prospects go from strength to strength under Tim Sherwood. Handed the lone forward role as the new Spurs boss opted for a 4-4-1-1, with Roberto Soldado rested to the bench, Adebayor bagged a brace and maximum bonus for a 13-point return at the Liberty – since the departure of Andre Villas-Boas, Adebayor has racked up 49 points, or an average of 8.2 points per game over six appearances. Priced at just 7.8 in FPL, he’s making a persuasive case for the third forward slot alongside Luis Suarez and Sergio Aguero – crucially, his consistency is also a factor, with returns in all but one of his starts under Sherwood. Home games with City and Everton and a trip to Hull in the next three are a little tricky and may deter some investors but, having played a part in eight of Spurs’ 14 goals under the new manager, he’s becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.

Eriksen Ticking Over
The Dane headed into yesterday’s match neck-and-neck on points with Adebayor since Sherwood’s installation and, whilst he was somewhat overshadowed, still managed to deliver for his growing band of owners. Eriksen’s assist for the frontman’s first took his tally to three goals and a pair of assists in the last five matches – similarly to Adebayor, the summer signing from Ajax has been consistent in his returns, producing in all but one of the previous five now. With a bonus point also received, he’s picked up 42 points over six under Sherwood – an average of seven points per game – and, favourably priced at just 7.3, certainly looks a contender for our five-man midfields and is likely to persuade plenty Fantasy managers who cannot accommodate Adebayor up top.

Bony’s Home Comforts
It’s six goals in six home appearances for the Ivorian after his late consolation scuppered the Spurs clean sheet. Whilst the likes of Adebayor and Daniel Sturridge offer a real consistency up front, Bony has yet to produce any attacking points over nine appearances on the road this season compared to seven goals and an assist across the same number of matches at the Liberty. With Fulham, Cardiff, Palace, West Brom and Norwich the next five visitors, the 7.3-priced forward’s chances of further returns look prosperous, then, but that woeful away form needs to be improved before we can view him as a reliable Fantasy prospect.

I'm tempted because he clashes with my Arsenal defenders next GW and it's a tough fixture anyway, plus he has an away fixture at Fulham after. Looks good on paper but Lallana doesn't like scoring points away from home. I'm tempted by a 3 week punt on A.Johnson.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Is this season anti-flair, or have the flair players lost their touch?

There is a lot of talk of this season being great for casual players and less so for flair players.

Evidence that this season is anti-flair is that Suarez is the key captain choice most weeks and players like Yaya Toure and Coleman continue to be a reliable source of points.

But are those who cry "anti-flair" right? Is it more that the so-called flair players have actually lost their touch? For example this weekend Suarez only brought in five points. He had a good fixture but so too did others. Where were all the Aguero captainers this week? Who had the gumption to captain Adam Johnson or who thought, what the hell, let’s go for Samuel Eto? Are so-called flair players simply not taking their chances?

Also every season key players emerge that offer consistent source of points. This is not new. Last season it was RVP, in seasons past its been Frank Lampard and Christiano Ronaldo. If everyone has these players surely the real flair exponents would make sure they surround them with excellent differentials.

So for those who think they are a flair player and this season is out to get them, lets see some evidence of your flair. Be great to hear about your flairiest moves this year. Whether such moves worked or not they hopefully will show us that genuine mavericks are still among us.

This post was inspired by FFS veteran Goose, who two weeks ago captained Rodriguez, when everyone else captained Suarez. It didn’t pay off, but the Southampton striker rewarded his efforts the next week. It also provided a rare glimmer of hope that there are still some genuinely exciting fantasy managers out there.

It's a dull answer, but in my experience playing FPL is rarely about flair. The perceived predictable, safe option for transfers/players etc. often work out best. It would be nice if it was less like this, but if you want be consistent, I think it's the right approach.

My plan has been to captain suarez every week and rely on the rest of my team to move me up the rankings. It's worked well so far to get me into top 50k but I feel I need to take more chances second half of season once this winter WC out the way.

Anti-Flair? I dont think so. I have gambled and lost at times this season (Bony in wk12 with a great set of fixtures, promptly injured and had to swap him back, doh!). Ive also gambled and done OK - Welbeck in for Utds nice Xmas run.

Appearances can be deceiving, any gamble I make is a very calculated one! This reduces the risk. I have deviated from the current template thinking on my WC though, with only 1 big hitter currently in midfield. Again, a calculated gamble based on observed scoring across positions.

This is very true. All signs were there, we just refused to read them. Poyet said he adjusts his tactics to get the best out of AJ, and we had seen that it means an extremely high role up the pitch, very much like Walcott's role in Arsenal. Captaining AJ last round was just as justifiable as captaining Walcott was when he was playing, and most people did genuinely consider Wally.

Anyone that daring to go with AJ (3 attacking returns all season before the hattrick) over Suarez against Villa at home would be well outside the top 1 million and a long way down their mini-league, so may as well do a crazy gamble.

With Arsenal and City both at home, there were other differential (C)s to be had. No competitive FPL-er would have that much flair each week - because it would fail badly a lot.

Villa is one of the best away defences this season. It was not one or two amongst us that worried Suarez might not give good returns against them. We just lacked the balls to react. But you are right that we were most probably not considering Johnson, and in hindsight it was good for me to captain Suarez, because my option would have been Giroud who scored even less. Then again, I didn't even have Aguero or AJ, so my choices were limited.

Worried Suarez wouldn't give good returns? One of the most consistent FPL players ever playing at home against a poor team?

Whatever the stats about Villa suggested, that's just hindsight talking. Suarez is the exception to all rules.

Against a very strong away team. We did discuss this before the match, just didn't have the courage to do it because of the risk of losing ground to everybody if he actually would defy the rules. But he doesn't, he is just a flat track bully, and Villa in its current defensive form is not flat track, not when Villa plays away from home at least (I don't quite understand how come they are so awful at home, their home record is immensely bad).

I disagree with the only 1 option thing - as I've said above, could have gone Arsenal/City if you really wanted a differential captain. But anyone with enough flair to go AJ would have had several (C) fails this season and be way down the ranks.

Probably true. Still, it is undeniable that there were signs about him being worth the punt - if, for example, you had neither Giroud nor Aguero and saw that Suarez's chances limited.

Think that's my problem this season. About 100k in the rankings and not going anywhere. I'm going with the flow judging my transfers on fixtures and price rises so far every risk I've taking this season has backfired including a Lukaku over Suarez captaining that lost me 33 points in total with Lukaku having the better fixture at home in both cases. Last season I finished top 10k and my best punt was transferring Cazorla in vs Cardiff and captaining him, that was the match he scored his hat trick. The season before I captained Berba and he got 5 goals. Being different is the only way to be.

Anti-flair perhaps in the way that these excellently scoring players are always so few that it is hard to get differentials. For example, before Christmas, just when we got 5-6 strikers to compose competitive attacks with, half of them got injured and everybody has almost the same trio upfront.

My most flair moves probably haven't worked at all. The one that worked the best must have been a one round Dzeko punt on holiday season followed by swapping him to Welbeck and a Palace trio.

Gonna make a "flair" move next GW and captain Hazard if I find balls to do that (my balls are currently focused to holding the January wildcard for one more week). See if that ends my season. 😉

I try to be cautious on bringing in players (even for a hit) the first few GW's. I try to bring in someone and give them the armband and it paid off. I only gamble on who to give the armband and the most outstanding of all was on GW 18, I think, where the armband was a toss up but most captained Suarez and I captained Walcott and gave me a nice boost on the top 100k.

My first season in FPL. Sitting at a very poor rank. ~110k. I wanted to have differentials, but none clicked. In various points of time, I have had captained Benteke, Arnautovic, Lukaku, etc ahead of Suarez, but failed always... Lost confidence in the differential flair approach, even then I sold Yaya in the WC (having bought him at 8.5m) at meagre 9.3m to get in Navas. As luck would have it, Yaya overscored again. Now I Scare to show flair.

No. I think this season is not anti-flair. My performance is steadily quite good this year, as well as my previous 7 seasons, except season 11/12 when I barely watched any Premier League match for the whole season.

Could probably the mavericks lost their touch?

Everyone has Suarez as their weekly captain, same to RVP or C-Ron in previous years, no difference from previous seasons.

Flair player look into pre-season. Coleman was one of the hottest pre-season topic, about his OOP status, about his assisting ability, etc. Some flair players were benefited from GW1, which is what flair players can outscore the casual. You can only argue that with 2 wildcards a season, casual player can trigger one very early of the season, so they can jump on Coleman very early. However, I know some flair players are very reluctant to bring Coleman to their teams. They think this is only a banwagon and if they brought him in after price rise they are only chasing the game, and then believe that Coleman won't keep performing. Now we know Coleman has already scored 5 goals. Back to the truth is, Coleman is an OOP playing at EVE, only at $5+, simply good enough to be included in any team. Another example is Ramsey. I think, flair players could be too stubborn sometimes, then neglect the core part.

Also, I think so-called flair players doubt this and that, sometimes look too much in statistics. One example is, Yaya/Ramsey play quite deep in midfield, but they just have exceptional ability to score. These players can score 1 goal by several shots, but Coutinho needs 30 shots (after his injury). Another example is, some flair players load up with MU defenders, coz history told us that MU is a strong team, a solid team and won't concede like this forever. But if flair player has watched MU's matches like casual players, they should realize that MU's defense is really terrible this season. My point is, a true flair player should be able to read through all the stats, to identify what are the truly useful, when stat is only talking about the history, and the stat came from a player playing against different opponents.

I think stats will be more useful in the 2nd half of season. I hope the true flair players could utilize them, and try to outscore casual players.

I'd have to agree with this article. I guess in terms of captaincy, when you see what Suarez can do, to not captain him in a mini-league you are leading is a real risk if he's having one of his hat-trick days. That said i considered Adebayor for captaincy this week but swerved back to Suarez, so i think if i was chasing the top of the league i would be more up for taking a risk.

It's also pretty risky but could provide those moment of magic that helps to to get to the last rounds of the cup.

Generally though, playing or captaining the flair players who explode one week and are quiet the next few weeks doesn't work over the season. Consistency as above, is key and working out who will be consitent is the job at hand

I think one of the secrets to being successful in FPL is to find the right balance between safety and risk, which is easier said than done. Taking too many risks whilst ignoring safety might win you an occasional top score of the week, and it might be more fun for some, but in the long run it is more likely that it will result in your ranking dropping or remaining low rather than rising. And playing ultra-safe probably won't get you to the top either unless you are already there.

There is a lot of talk on this site about finding differentials and breaking the template. Templates evolve continuously during the season, and the better players somehow manage to get the next week's template in advance, rather than just copying the previous week's one. And although many 'template teams' might be pretty similar, they are not often completely identical - there are nearly always a few minor differences between them.

There is a big difference between taking unjustified risks just for the sake of it, and identifying opportunities that others may have missed and carefully weighing up whether they are likely to be better or worse than the popular alternatives.

A risky punt might also occasionally be justified in order to try and catch the leader of your mini-league, especially right at the end of the season - this is equivalent to sending your goalkeeper forward for a corner or free kick in injury time, when the small chance of a late equaliser is more important than the greater chance of conceding another goal on a breakaway - or in ice-hockey when a desperate team might temporarily replace their goal-minder with an attacking player and leave their own net unguarded. But it would be suicidal to do this frequently earlier in the match.

I had Tonev, Rodriguez, Schurlle and Miralles from GW1. Stuck with them for 5 weeks and lost >1m in value whilst all around me had the safe picks that they had wildcarded in for GW2/3.

Rivals mocked me for not putting in the standard players until I finally succumbed and got the classic bog standard team. That was the catalyst for Rodriguez to rally to near 100 points.

Second WC played last week. Lessons learnt were to go with the big hitters plus cheap differentials like...Delaney (4.4m extra cost over Ward 4.1m) which paid off with 3 bonus points this weekend! (Small victories but...still 150 points off bitterest of rivals)

Its been an extremely difficult season for flair with so many clear and easy bandwagons early in the season. I feel things will turn in the second half of the season, double game weeks, the end of the transfer market will see the causals being left behind.

If Norwich could start playing well he could be a real option. They normally have at least a decent spell once a season. Could be their turn now.

    Good Morning All
How does this look for my wildcard
    McGregor, Mannone
    Fonte, Bardsley, Kolarov, Chester, MArriapa
    Oscar, Hazards, Yaya, Januzj, Noone
    Aguero, Adebayor, Suarez

I have 0.6 in the bank. Looking at getting Ramsey in for Oscar on his return as I don't have any Arsenal cover. Then uprading Noone to Johnson.

I'm keeping JRod he's on form with good fixtures. Just because he has a low price tag doesn't make him a bad player. Honestly if he was up about the same price as Lukaku/Giroud/Ade I'd still be considering him.

With Torres out for weeks (months more likely) and considering fixtures, Eto might prove as valuable differential. Might.

Who to chop from the Mid for Aguero?

    2 FT.

    Ozil. Or Silva.

If its Silva the replacement could only be for 5.8.

If its Ozil, 6.5, meaning likes of Wilts or Johnson.

I would keep any and all City mids you have as they are guaranteed at least 4 goals a game at home.

Ozil can be downgraded to Ramsey or Santi to free up extra cash though.

Well yes, at the moment in my mind its Ozil who goes.

Would love Santi but cannot afford Aguero with a minor downgrade like that.

Not sure I would have both SS. But Lallana Y JRod to Bony & Johnson could be good.

I see the word casual used frequently. If a player isn't a casual are they obsessive or part time?

So, no FTs left. But good to go for next gameweek?

(Should be in the top 500 overall rankings by tomorrow, providing baines / coleman do okay, so not looking to take risks)

    Mannone Boruc
    Coleman. Sagna. Baines. Chester. Whittaker
Cabaye. Hazard. Yaya. Eriksen. Johnson (villa)
    Suarez. Aguero. Sturridge.

0.4m in the bank, for adjustments.

If Cabaye goes, I guess I'll make adecision between playing 4 defenders or taking a hit.

    Anything else look ropey?

This I think could end up being a problem. People are so fixated on Suarez he might quietly go off the boil, even a bit, and people won't notice.

I feel there are ranks to be made up, bit like what Jonty mentioned further up.
