The Community Round Up

Time machines and crystal balls were engaged this week as the Fantasy Football Scout community cast aside concerns on the immediate fixtures to look ahead at the raft of missing matches from Gameweek 29. Those looming blanks dominated discussion but there was also time for a controversial post calling for the community to dump the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game’s top scorer, plus an array of threads assessing Ultimate FPL strategies. The week was also notable for the launch of a couple of new unofficial community competitions surrounding the Scout Picks and an exclusive tournament for our “Deadzone” posters.

The Hottest Topics

With most of the FA Cup quarter-finals in place, the community was this week left staring into the chasm that is Gameweek 29 and pondering how we can navigate the void left by a series of postponements. Among those to lead our community through the tricky ravines was PIPP who, quick as a flash, was on hand within a few hours of last Sunday’s games to give us the low-down on those active and missing in action from the Gameweek. His quick thinking made it one of the week’s most popular posts, as he dipped into an array of issues, including UEFA and Premier League politics. Highbrow.

Scoredelario was another of our Gameweek 29 sherpas. He provided a cautious warning about coping with the Gameweek of blanks via hits. He urged the community to avoid spending points on lightweight players merely because they have a fixture in place. Bsloebadger was also on hand to produce a great little blank fixture survival guide, complete with key options from the teams that are set to be in action.

Innsie’s team-by-team, player-by-player analysis on Gameweek 29 was another popular draw, with Peter Crouch and Charlie Adam among the unlikely names being discussed. We also offered a list of those who could be great captaincy options for the week.

Elsewhere, our resident Sky Sports game expert, “D1sable”, is also riding high in the FPL game this season. He took it upon himself to look beyond Gameweek 29 and towards the double Gameweeks that follow: his post on the long-term Gameweek 29 strategies is well worth a read.

Amongst this week’s most controversial posts was Giggs Boson’s incendiary discussion on whether now is the time to drop Luis Suarez. A string of goalless performances, including another today in the win over Swansea, perhaps provide a compelling argument. At the time, few of our community seemed brave enough to part company with the enthralling Uruguayan but the goal posts have been moved again by Daniel Sturridge’s Anfield brace this afternoon.

This weekend marked the kick-off of the Ultimate FPL game Beta. This new in-depth pursuit looks ideally placed for dedicated Fantasy managers and in our UFPL hot topic we asked what early strategies the community was looking to adopt. Meerlight offered a timely reminder on the wildcard after three Gameweeks, urging the importance of focussing on short-term fixtures.

The Community Tournaments

In Tommy We Trust’s All Things leagues we saw ENR, Bootsy, Jonty, Billy Ketsu, Jambo17 and Koneheads take top spots going into Gameweek 27.

Meanwhile, @ocprodigy has started a new game based loosely on our very own Scout Picks. His idea is for the community is to compete against each other with their own weekly picks. Plus, those who score more than the Fantasy Football Scout Picks will gain an extra point. The full rules and point scoring system are explained here.

In addition, Innsie turned up again with another proposed distraction, aimed specifically at those posters active in the early hours of the morning UK time. The “Deadzone” as it is affectionately known is always full of willing participants from many timezones and Innsie has put forward an unofficial FPL tournament dedicated to those good folk.

Finally, a reminder that our Paddy Power Cup and Members Cups are still open for entry – we will close the gates on qualifying tomorrow but, if you’ve yet to get your name in the hat, you can still get involved. Click here for details.

With the lack of thrilling mid/fwd transfers available, it comes to upgrading defenders. Odd.

    Any else doing the same?

Done a similar swap of Kolorov > Ivan. Points recently are much better than any mid of the same price, bar Nolan really.

Fellow SAS owners. Is it time to finally captain Sturridge regularly over Suarez? I've been backing Sturridge for a few weeks now and have always vouched for him in the picks. However despite my gut instinct that he's now the better prospect, I've continued to play the game with fear of a potential Suarez haul ultimately causing a massive dive down the rankings and thus the armband remained on Suarez.

Its probably time to stop being so conservative, grow some balls, and start backing Sturridge over Suarez for the armband on a regular basis starting this week, thoughts?

I mean maybe that was the time to have done it maybe Sturridges peak in form tails off? Something about the whole Sturridge over Suarez c doesn't sit well with me yet over the last two weeks its been the way to go.

It doesn't sit well because of the fear factor. Its more damaging to not captain Suarez than to not captain Sturridge simply because of the ownership levels and perhaps the fear of dropping in rank overriding the potential to rise in ranks.

Yeah definitely that has to be considered. The week the percentage is more split is the week is safer to go against or the week when Suarez c is actually a differential?

I've gone Aguero, I've gone Rooney, I've gone Hazard recently for his hattrick. I think it'll mix up now in the run in with the dgws and having the odd punt.

                This!

Never felt so low in decision making. I'm normally good in choosing a captain, but being on top in my ML, has had kind of a paralysing effect on me and forced me into being defensive due to fear.

What's worse, after seeing the 2nd and 3rd players readily sticking with Suarez as captain, the 2nd placed one went for Sturridge this GW!

                So annoying!

                Now I'm going on offensive!

We are both playing the game through fear which I think is the wrong way to play. The best form of defence is attack I think and without a doubt I'd have risen quickly up the rankings instead of lingering on the cusp of the top 10k. You see most of the top players are playing through fear as well and those who have taken risks would have been rewarded big time.

Ive had the armband on Sturridge for 4 or 5 weeks now.....it hurt when he missed the peno against Everton :-). He's just more central and more selfish than Suarez and slightly more of a captain differential.

I'm actually toying with the idea of dropping Suarez, ballsy, possibly stupid but I think Suarezs output is diminshed by his riole in the team when Sturridge plays. Dont get me wrong he's still a class apart, but I need to make up some ground in my mini league so need to do something different.

Yeah for making up ground you need to make ballsy moves so in your situation I wouldn't have much hesitation to say that dropping Suarez is probably a good idea.

But what about for those of us who are leading our mini-leagues and have a high rank? Should we sit idly by while other braver FPL managers catch up and possibly overtake?

SaS here. Captained Studge twice in a row already. Actually it was almost a no-brainer nowadays, if you watch any of Liv games. The way they are positioned alone is enough to justify the captaincy option, so the selfishness of Studge only assures it. Plus Suarez was playing extremely well after the suspension, so I already expect some regression.

Unlucky for you the time to put the armband on Studge could be over.

Those things you mention will continue to happen, but I think DGWs happening, some other key candidates for captaincy should appear.

            For example:-
GW28 - Hazard @Fulham (Studge has Soton away - tougher to break down imo)
            GW29 - blank
GW30 - Hazard @ avl, RvP, NLD (goals galore) - Studge has MUN away)
GW31 - RvP or Kun (DGW)

It may be over, but it could happen again. The temptation should be less than before, at least for me.

Its interesting that you're backing Hazard over Sturridge this week. I'm not convinced Saints will continue their good form now they have midtable safety. Fulham under new management and striving to avoid relegation could be a tough fixture, its a London derby as well. Personally I think i'd still pick Sturridge but its a close call for sure.

Hazard is really a good captain pick, especially when Lamps is not on the filed and against lowly teams. Studge may be the safer bet, but like you said, fortune favours the brave 😉 Yep, it's a close call.

Indeed and its always better to look forward than look back (not chase lost points on Sturridge). Perhaps Hazard is the ballsy pick this week and we should be backing him. Time to not play with fear but to be brave.

Apart form his hatrick v Newcastle Hazard is rarely a better armband option than a centre forward. That said Fulham are gash 🙂

Didn't think it was possible, but he is even greedier than Suarez, e.g going for a right footed Cantona-esque chip today when other options were on.

Playing further forward too with Suarez either behind him or drifting towards the wings.

fwiw, I think Suarez will start to claw back the points, but whilst Studge is on fire give him the armband.

Yeah its never a bad idea to back the form player. It actually seems obvious now that we look back. Its funny because Suarez has had superior stats but sometimes the stats aren't always a good reflection of form.

Im seriously considering dropping Suarez to allow for a Rooney/RVP, Kun, Sturidge front line from GW 29 onward.....

its a sort of all in move to make up ground in my mini league.......

Not sure dropping Suarez is the best idea. He's still picking up regular points despite being 'off form'. However I do think there is room for a Suarez vs Rooney/RVP debate.

I just like the idea of Rooney, Kun and Sturidge over the next few game weeks espcially given the upcomming DGW's.

I guess its driven to a certain extent by a lack of viabale Utd midfield options.

          Ive been wrong before though.

You can always buy Suarez back for Liverpool's upcoming DGW, unless it's scheduled for GW 31 as well. It'll cost you a little under a million, but I think it might be worth it at this point in the season.

Yeah, arsenal 2nd hardest remaining schedule
At Stoke FA Cup vs Everton
      At Beyern At Spurs
      At Chelsea home v City
      At Everton

After Stoke I don't see a win for Arsene until April 12th! No silverware this year again I'm afraid...

I'm definitely not making the same mistakes I did this season, next season.

Failing to hop on key bandwagons this season(Coleman, Yaya, Lallana, Ramsey) through pure stubbornness left me trailing very early on, not just points wise, but Team Value wise.

Many 'smarter'(/Casual 😉 ) players took early hits to get in these sort of players and are most likely 100+ points ahead of me with at least a few million more in the kitty than me.

It worked for me last season(Fellaini, Michu), and hopefully it'll work for me next season.

I hear you. Ive missed a few too.

My issue is that I dont want to knee jerk and just because someone has a couple of decent points hauls dont want to take hits to bring them in....but then they keep having them. But then you have the fear that you breing them in just as their run comes to an end, but then they keep scoring.....frustrating.

AJ is a classic example, Nolan a more recent one.

I was convinced all four of those wouldn't be scoring as consistently as they have. Coleman has 5 goals, Yaya 13 & Lallana has 7 double-figure hauls.

The annoying but is, when one blanks, the other scores.

My team's in a bit of a mess due to the blanks/injuries but I still have my WC.

Given I currently have 8-9 for GW28 and 5-6 for GW29 atm, which option looks best?

          A. WC this week, setting up team for blank weeks, getting rid of deadwood.
          B. Take -8's the next two weeks to get players out, then WC to set up for doubles.
          C. -4 this week, then FT/-4 next and go with pretty much what I've got for GW29, then WC.

          Cheers

Problem is that you can't really do both with a WC now.

Can only have 4 DGW players on the bench, which if GW31 is a bumper DGW as has been suggested, only have 2 FT's before then.

Yep definitely edging towards keeping the WC, GW29 looks a bit of a write off to me, severe lack of appealing options, wouldn't want to be wasting my WC on getting average players in just coz they have a game that one week.

I guess it comes down to whether you think he will start? After a loss you'd think he will start yet despite being behind in the game he was never brought on as a sub. Doesn't bode well for this coming week imo.

          Mannone
Kompany Evra EVE ARS CPL (or some other cheapish def w a dgw)
          Yaya AJ Hazard Puncheon Mirallas
          SAS

Given price limitations this is probably a realistic shot at an integral WC squad for the coming dgws. How many points would you pay to get it? It would cost me 28 points by gw31 since I don't have my WC and I am actually considering going for it by loading up on 28 and 29 to somewhat defray the costs.

Now I know the conventional wisdom on here this week has been to play it conservatively and take lumps in the next few weeks to prepare for the dgw bonanzas, but do the shortterm losses really support the longterm gains?

Question; I bought Suarez at 12.1, he is now worth 13.4. When I go to sell him I only get 12.1 to spend. I understood you make 50% of the players price rise when you go to sell. Am I wrong?

Got to be Adrian imo. West Ham the form team in the league atm.

Boruc. Should get more save points.

Who are people ditching Kolarov for? Struggling to find a good replacement

I'm ditching Zaba to get a Chelsea defender, missed out badly on them recently.

Assuming you have one, Spurs maybe?

Got no Chelsea, so maybe Ivan or Terry. A bit expensive though..

Azpi at 5.5? Cahill at 6?

                        Both good, and cheaper options

                          Defo Cahill over Azpi.

He is worth the extra money for BAPS and goal threat, with Azpi you are pretty much just paying for cleansheets.

Next on my chopping list, after Erik. Maybe Azpi, Fonte, Olsson or Chambers.

                    Azpi is a good option

I'm just benching him, but tbh I have a strong enough defense to cover a luxury player like him.
I would 100% go Chelsea if I was getting rid.
