Scout Scribbles – United Stumble Again

United serve up a dire display and are comprehensively beaten by Olympiacos. Liverpool and Sunderland are set for a double Gameweek 31, Aaron Ramsey could be back for mid-March, Lacina Traore is ruled out with a hamstring injury for Everton, whilst Jonny Howson is back in action for Norwich:

United Slump in Greece

For last night’s 2-0 loss at Olympiacos, David Moyes made just three changes to the side that won at Selhurst Park last weekend. Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic continued at the back, though further up the field, Tom Cleverley, Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young came in for Marouane Fellaini, Adnan Januzaj (omitted from the squad altogether) and the cup-tied Juan Mata. On the injury front, Danny Welbeck cemented his comeback from a knee problem with a second-half sub appearance, though Jonny Evans, Phil Jones and Rafael failed to make the squad.

The Scout Says: A single shot on target in a dire display will do little to raise hopes and expectations of United’s main Fantasy assets. Moyes’ men now have this weekend off before returning to action in Gameweek 29 away to West Brom, and with a double Gameweek 31 also on their agenda, essentially have four fixtures over that period when many other sides play just twice. With Liverpool and City set for a double that week, though, Robin van Persie – despite scoring in four of his last five in the league – may struggle to persuade many to take a punt, whilst Mata and Wayne Rooney also look a little less enticing as United continue to toil under Moyes.

Double Gameweek 31 for Liverpool and Sunderland

The Premier League confirmed a new date for Liverpool’s home clash against Sunderland, which was originally set to take place in Gameweek 29. The Anfield encounter has been moved to Wednesday March 26, thus handing both sides a pair of fixtures in Gameweek 31 – Liverpool travel to Cardiff, whilst the Black Cats pay visit to Norwich prior to their midweek confrontation on Merseyside.

The Scout Says: At present, then, this leaves six teams with doubles in Gameweek 31, with United, City, West Ham and Hull also set to feature twice. Fantasy managers now have the dilemma of choosing between the likes of Robin van Persie, Sergio Aguero, Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge for the double, though with both Manchester sides up against one another, Liverpool’s far kinder pair of matches is sure to see substantial investment in both their forwards. For the short-term, at least, it’s likely to quash any ideas over selling Suarez to free up budget – both he and Sturridge look capable of running riot across both games, whilst the likes of Steven Gerrard and Raheem Sterling are set to offer options across the price brackets for those loading up on the Premier League’s top-scoring side.

Ramsey Close to Gunners Return

Reports suggest the Welshman is stepping up his recovery from a thigh problem and could be in line to return in time for Arsenal’s north London derby with Tottenham on Sunday March 16 (Gameweek 30).

The Scout Says: Despite missing the last nine league matches through injury, Ramsey is still joint-top scoring midfielder along with Mesut Ozil for the Gunners in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game. Not only does that sum up his early-season form, it’s somewhat reflective of the German’s inability to produce in recent matches – he’s managed a single assist since Ramsey limped off at West Ham back in Gameweek 18. Certainly, providing the Welshman can prove his fitness, there’s no doubt he’d grab our attentions again – he’s down to 7.0 in FPL now – but bearing in mind he also suffered a setback last month, most Fantasy managers will be a little tentative to pencil in plans for Ramsey’s return until he’s pronounced fit by Arsene Wenger.

Traore Setback for Toffees

The Ivorian is set to be sidelined with the hamstring injury sustained in the pre-match warm-up against Chelsea last weekend. Roberto Martinez rolled out an update on both Traore and Romelu Lukaku ahead of the weekend visit of West Ham:

“It is going to take a long period of time which at this stage of the season will be a big miss. It will be weeks rather than months. It’s a really disappointing outcome. He was ready and had been working really hard since he arrived at the club. Starting the game at Chelsea was the next target after Swansea and for him to pull his hamstring in the last action of the warm-up was a really disappointing moment….Romelu has been working really well and he is looking fresh and ready. We are all very excited to see him back enjoying his football with really top energy levels.”

The Scout Says: Traore needed just four minutes of his debut in the FA Cup to net his first goal for the Merseysiders and had looked set to offer strong competition for the lone forward role under Martinez. Yesterday’s news, allied with confirmation of Lukaku’s return, puts the big Belgian back at the top of the pecking order in spite of Steven Naismith’s recent fine form. The Toffees have failed to score in any of their last four league matches – a run coinciding with Lukaku’s ankle injury absence – but with a very favourable schedule to follow, he may yet come into contention as a third forward option once again. Now down to 11% ownership after scoring just once in his last 10 starts, the 8.2-priced Lukaku has home games with West Ham, Cardiff and Swansea and a trip to Fulham in the next five to reignite our interest.

Howson Steps Up Canaries Comeback

The Norwich midfielder turned out for 60 minutes of last night’s reserve clash against Everton as he edges nearer to a first-team return. The reserves team coach, Mark Robson, rolled out an update:

“He trained with us and he trained really, really well. It’s nice for Jon because he’s been out for a while and he obviously needs a few minutes under his belt to get back into the swing of things. I’m sure there will be a few fans who want to come down and see him because he’s a top player. It will be great if we can get a few more supporters through the door because of that.”

The Scout Says: Sidelined since mid-December with a back problem, Howson has started all but two of Norwich’s first 16 Gameweeks and was a pivotal figure in Chris Hughton’s first XI. Despite missing the last 11 league matches, Howson’s two-goal tally – he’s notched against Stoke and Arsenal – is just one less than Robert Snodgrass, for example, in the Canaries midfield. Providing he can prove his fitness, Howson could return for a schedule that pits Hughton’s side against fellow strugglers Villa, Stoke, Sunderland, Swansea, West Brom and Fulham in six of the next seven Gameweeks. With Snodgrass understandably set to be the main source of interest, though, there may yet be one or two Canaries who prove real differentials over that upcoming spell.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

The demise of Man United as a fantasy football force

Last night was full of some excellent posts about the decline of Manchester United as a footballing force. Among my favourites was this very considered post by RoysCallerAnne. http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2014/02/25/ffs-paddy-power-cup-ix-and-members-cup-iv-first-round-draws/?hc_sort_by=thread_rating#hc_comments

Like me, RoysCallerAnne is old enough to remember a time when Liverpool were the dominant force in English football and Manchester United where just one of many upper half of the table top flight clubs. Now after years of dominance Manchester United, with a new manager, an ageing squad and a team that is not gelling, are like Liverpool of the last few years.

I didn’t hot topic that as the hot topics are for fantasy football posts but I wanted to flag it up here and say that it’s inspired me to start a discussion on the demise of Manchester United as a fantasy football force. This is actually a very great loss that we should all lament, whether we are fans of ManC, Liverpool, Leeds or yes, even Brighton (the scars of 1983 run deep).

When I first started playing fantasy football Manchester United were THE TEAM. Ronaldo in midfield, Rooney and the occasionally explosive Berbatov up top and Vidic and Evra in defence. These were reliable picks you could base your captaincy and squad around all season. To ignore Manchester United was fantasy suicide.

Now Rooney is called on to play deep when the chips are down, which happens a lot these days. RVP has a price tag hanging around his neck like a breezeblock strapped to an anvil. It’s effecting his goal scoring ability too for a player who should be priced at around £10m this year.

The midfield has been a no go zone now for a season or more, with rotation and sub standard options failing to impress.

And in defence, that was so reliable in seasons gone by, this sorry bunch can’t get a clean sheet.

I write this as a Manchester United double appears on the horizon. For me RVP and Rooney are simply not deserving of a place that by rights needs to go to Aguero, Sturridge, Suarez or the likes of Lukaku and other cheaper players with a double in gwk 31.

In midfield Mata is the only option. He is reliable and has assists in him. Not explosive. He doesn’t excite me like Hazard or Yaya or Lallana, but he’ll do.

In defence – I’m partially tempted by Evra, he is attacking, but as last night shows wasteful. I think I prefer Kompany for the gwk 31 rather than waste money on ManU.

So what do you think of Manchester United’s fantasy football demise? I’m talking from a purely fantasy football point of view here. I’m not concerned about tribal rivalries and glee at a fallen giant, or defensive bluster of Red Devil fans. I’m thinking about the loss of options for us fantasy managers.

And what of next year? Set to be out of Europe they are surely set to slide further. Could this actually help us? With cheaper options meaning that Manchester United provide the value that other fallen giants such as Liverpool are now providing us after years in the doldrums.

What will be interesting is the pricing next year. The only United player I have is Mata and im not keeping him for long.

I quite like Man Utd so its not good viewing the demise.

From a fantasy football point of view it leaves us with lots of over priced average picks this season. That's not good for the game. Next year a 9m priced Rooney or a 5m priced gk could be great.

Then there will always be three better striking options and so will end our interest in Rooney.

If RVP leaves as expected in the summer, Rooney should be top man again up front, which could bring him back on our radars. For the moment though, no chance.

Rooney is too valuable now as an all rounder. There are better pure strikers than him. He's great as a number 10 in football terms but not fantasy football terms as he moves back too much. If ManU let RVP go and stick with Hernandez, Welbeck and Rooney as their only strikers then they are in real trouble. If as I suspect they get in another striker then it should be someone of the quality who can play week in week out, which would place Rooney back deeper into a support role that he excels at. Also if Rooney is their main striker, who feeds him. Mata can't do that on his own. Are Cleverley, Fellaini et al good enough to do that? Arguably not.

rooney only moves back as much as he does because of the lack of creativity from utds midfielders, youve even seen rvp drop back to midfield this season to help with creativity. if utd can bring in a cesc type quality player you might see a more advanced rooney at no.10... maybe.

So spoilt by success some of the plastics are biting the hand of the man that brought them it.

Moyes aint up to it, how many of the players who battled vs Real Madrid last year are still there in the squad?

As for ageing they've another year on the clock, not ten.

I have two elephants in the room with Evans and Mata, to a certain extent, but more so Evans...

The fact that they have a fixture in GW29, and a DGW in 31 is clouding my judgement of a team that is almost wholly unworthy of our investments...

Add that to the fact that Moyes is a media grinch, it makes it almost impossible to keep these players...

Evans (and hopefully Moyes too) will certainly not be trolling me next year...

I wonder if it has an effect on the team.

Is it really necessary for him to keep it so secret? Does it really give him that much of an advantage? I remember quotes from the players suggesting that they felt they could prepare for games better under Fergie since they know who was playing hours before kick-off

Since you´re being nostalgic, what about those times you could captain Nani and Young?(although the latter before joining United).

I don´t think FPL will underrate players like Rooney, RvP and Evra but they should have a lighter pricetag indeed, RvP the most likely to be around 10.0. They will be taken as a top 6 Club therefore being priced accordingly, we know seasons past affect how they price players in the new season, but top players remain top (suarez started at 11 tooo albeit with a much better season form than Rooney and RvP this term).

14m was a fair price for RVP, because it wasn't too high to dissuade a large number of FPL managers from buying him anyway, and he was the most popular captain choice for the first few game-weeks this season. It should have fallen further since then though.

Before the season began, there was much discussion as to whether RVP or Bale was the more essential, or whether it might even be possible to afford both. Then when it became obvious that Gareth was leaving, it changed to RVP or not RVP. It appeared to be a very close call at the time, but I'm very pleased that I made the right decision in retrospect by leaving him out and strengthening the rest of my squad instead.

a team with mata-rvp-rooney should be fantasy gold fffs

FPL did very well with their pricing of United mids this year to be fair, their prices reflect their potential quite well.

This is the first season in memory where I'm yet to own a Untied player. I am not particularly surprised that they are struggling so badly and the only player I'd own (RVP) is too expensive.

Rooney has been my only United player so far this season. He did well for me in game-weeks 16 to 18, scoring 5,11 and 11 but unfortunately these were followed by a blank and a one-pointer, so I got rid of him with my January Wildcard.

Most of their players are just not performing well enough to justify their prices this season, apart possibly from Evra. There are always a large number of fantasy players who are not seriously worth considering because their form is not good enough for their price or because they are too subject to rest, rotation or injury, and this time it just happens that more than usual are from United. This is not too surprising when you consider that their prices were set high because of United's status as league champions and that United's form has fallen off considerably since then. It is also more striking because of the number of FPL managers who are United fans and who desperately want to justify including United players in their FPL squads.

I'm a bleeding heart softie and I'm starting to get really worried about David Moyes. His mental health will surely suffer under this kind of pressure. It's not just having to squeeze performances out of sub-par players, that's just a job. What must be very hard to take is feeling like there's an entire nation mocking your incompetence at a career you've devoted your life to. It must be near impossible to maintain self-belief and happiness through that.

From a pure Fantasy football perspective, I have been looking at the fixtures (naturally) and United have an absolutely glorious run from DGW32 onwards. But even with great fixtures, I just don't know if I want to spend money on them.

My tentative plan right now is to ignore their DGW - (whm, MCI) isn't exactly brilliant and there are better options elsewhere. But their fixtures dovetail perfectly with Everton so I might swap Coleman for Evra around GW32/33 IF United start looking they look like they can keep a clean sheet.

It's obviously too early to rule it out, but I don't think I'll own any United players at all this season.

Obviously if they hit form and other assets falter, I might consider it though

I had Rooney for a couple of barren weeks and Rafael for one week before he got injured. I'd like to say "never again" but those fixtures sure are tempting 🙂

One of my success this year is never getting MU players after the very early gameweeks, coz most of them are overpriced (except Januzaj).

If you have MU players now, it's good to hold them until GW29. But if it's me, I will sell them all on GW30/31. Most DGW teams have plenty of players could outscore MU players. Needless to mention players from LIV or MC or EVE, but I think Mannone/AJ, Adrian/Demel/Nolan/Carroll, McGregor/Figueroa/Huddlestone/Jelly/Long could all beat the likes of DDG/Evra/Mata/RVP.

When I first read the title, I thought it said "Fantasy football farce" 😯

From a fantasy perspective though, if you leave your expectations and feeling to one side, why not just treat Manchester United the same way you would any other team? They are a decent side with some decent fantasy potential. RVP is consistent, if not over-priced. Rooney can tear it up on occasion. Januzaj is having a great season and is very cheap, albiet with some rotation risk. Evra is worth a look too.

Overall, don't let your expectations cloud your judgement. Pick the players based on their fantasy potential, not based on who they play for.

      Innit.

I started the season with Van Persie, swapped him for Rooney for one match and then swapped him for Suarez in GW 7 I think it was, not had a United player since.

I remember United at home against Palace, I had the captaincy on Van Persie, Palace went down to ten men and Van Persie scored the penalty, I was expecting a goal blitz in the second half, United were so poor and this was against Holloways Palace who were whipping boys at the time, I decided to stay away from United players after that and nothing I have seen since will change that.

United have been a dominant force for two decades, it will take a while for people to realise that maybe their players are not good options.

I remember being crucified for saying Rooney was not a good choice a number of weeks ago, he has since scored 1 goal. The number of people enquiring about Jonny Evans per week is ridiculous considering the likes of Norwich have probably kept more clean sheets and the hysteria when Mata joined was incredible, everyone rushed to bring him in, forgetting that United are not the same team and you are paying 9.5 - 10 mil for a midtable midfielder.

Having said all that I have been looking at Evra recently, gets up the pitch a lot and has an assist in him, would you rather have him ahead of Coleman, Merte, Koscielny, Terry, Cahill, Ivanovic? I know I wouldnt.

This is what I think United's main assets will be priced next year:

      De Gea - £5.5m
      Evra - £5.5m (If he's still around)
      Mata - £8.5m
      Januzaj - £6m
      Welbeck - £6.5m
      Rooney - £10m
      Van Persie - £12m (If he's around)

A couple of them might be worth a look in next year, but this year they are all far to overpriced (I'm still confused how Van Persie's price has only dropped 0.4 this year when his ownership decreased from about 50% to 15%). I only have Mata and might be forced to get rid of him for another DGWer (Nolan or AJ) before GW31 to raise funds for Aguero.

I was planning on getting in Mata for GW29 and playing him and Januzaj up until GW31 for the DGW now I am not sure, Januzaj is a risk and Man Utd are a bit rubbish. Think I might drop another 4pts (already planning on spending 12 between now and GW31) and try and get Sterling in there. Go for the SSS and just Mata for United in the DGW.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do something to make it easier to find yourself in the list for the cup, not everyone is using a device that allows them to do ctrl + f.

Set the list so we can click on the header to sort it, we can then sort by name on each side and look for ourselves. If this is too difficult to set up at least put the home teams in alphabetical order it's then a 50/50 chance that you can easily find yourself and once you have found yourself you can remember the home team when you want to check the result.

    PLEASE!

iOS7 does have search. Type your search text into the search/URL bar at the top. You'll get a list of auto-complete suggestions and at the bottom of that list is "On this page (x matches)"

Agree. So many takeaways from this but the best one from me was this....

..."one can only imagine how Sir Alex Ferguson would have revelled in having Juan Mata and a maturing Adnan Januzaj at his disposal."

Imagine! And he wouldnt have bought Fellaini either he would have used the money elsewhere.

This team is just 1 year older not 10 as Jonty said above so who is to blame - Moyes.

looking for a bit of advice please.

    Szczesny Mannone
    Kosciely Fonte Coleman Ward Turner
Nolan Lallana Hazard Mirallas Ki Sung-Yueng
    Suárez Adebayor Dzeko

2 FT. Thinking Snodgrass for Ki but need rid of Dzeko too....who to buy for him? Should I focus on a player for GW29 (JRod/Lambery/Hooper) or buy Sturridge/Aguero for following weeks. Dzeko price dropping.

    Any thoughts welcome. thanks

I'd go Lambert/Jrod to get the additional fixture and then in GW29 look to upgrade Ade to Sturridge and possibly downgrade Lambert to Long.

Would those that didn't manage to qualify for the FFS cups be interested if I set up another FFS cup for just those that failed to qualify? Same format as the regular cup, knockouts etc. if I can get enough people who are wanting to join I'll set it up and maybe even think of a 1st place prize

    IN DEFENCE OF NORWICH

With their superb upcoming fixtures including a plumb GW29 clash I'm sure we'll all be looking to trade in at least one of their backline in the next week. Question is, which one?

Olsson is the obvious choice with budget-friendly price (4.3). However, Bassong has picked up 9 bonus points compared to Olsson's 3, and over slightly fewer games. Is this enough to justify the extra 0.4?

Ruddy is the most expensive option but I'm tempted due to having no gw29 keeper at present and not wanting to ditch any more regular defenders. Plus he has good fixtures in a couple of bad weeks for my main choice. Finally, Joseph Yobo worth a punt at mid-range 4.5 having started the last three?

Interested to hear thoughts of Norwich fans and anyone with a closer eye on stats.

This is my biggest issue, nobody has any drive at all. As I said lady night, if they'd only try then I wouldn't mind. Losing because tactics/formation are taking getting used to but you're trying your best is a hell of a lot different to losing because you don't give a shit.

Then again what do you expect when you constantly raise the wages of an absolute mercenary (Rooney). The younger players must see this and think that attitude is acceptable. Same with Vidic, things going badly and he decides he's done with the club in the Summer, even announces it. A lot of bad bad form going around in United right now.

As do I, extremely disappointed in him. One thing is deciding to leave and informing Moyes about it but to announce it to the public when you know first hand as the captain how much your team needs solidarity. Disgusting really, not worthy of the armband.

He's got to go, as soon as. Wouldn't want to keep him until the summer and hand him a load of £ to spend. The season is a write-off. Get a new guy in, give him a few months to assess the team to see what's needed in the summer.

So far he's got Mata and Fellaini, 1 hit, 1 miss.

Better record so far than a number of teams for transfers. My issue is if he'll insist in buying players that suit his awful style of play...

Of course Mata's quality isn't in doubt, but it could be rendered useless under Moyes if he doesn't adapt the formation.

The only reason he's still there, imo, is Fergie's words of "give him time".

It was a bad decision to appoint him (I said it at the time - going from the greatest football manager of all time to one whose greatest achievement is a League 2 title is asking for trouble), and it's only getting worse. Cut off the finger to save the hand.

Manchester United made a grave mistake....this isn't the 1980s anymore, the next level is higher than it has ever been and we should've appointed somebody with a proven track record of winning.

he inspires no confidence, plays the most negative football ive ever seen, and gets his team selection wrong time and time again

i mean how much worse could any other manager do?! hes an absoulute idiot and if hes given a bucket load of cash he'd probably waste it all on sub standard players and cripple united until hes eventually sacked

Agreed, he needs to go ASAP.

        He clearly has no answers.

What is his footballing philosophy? Whatever it is hasn't become clear over the past months. At least if we could see some sort of aim or style to the play that he is trying to ingrain it would be a carrot for us to follow.

        Get him out!

He shouldn't need this long though. United need the revenue of finishing higher and getting further in competitions in order to sustain such prowess in the business of football. We can't afford two mediocre seasons.

yeah there's no way they'll give him such a long contract & ditch him after a yr, even if he deserves to. even more so as fergie wanted him & you know what he's like with his ego, they'll just repeat what he said when he left about sticking by the manager during the bad times

Put Giggs in charge until the end of the season, and then get Klopp or Van Gaal (before Spurs do).

Season is already finished. 4th is gone, CL is gone even if he manage to overturn Olympiakos.

Giggs would be nothing but a placeholder until we can appoint somebody who has proven experience of being a successful manager that can win trophies.

Well, the only person I would consider replacing Moyes with, if I had anything to do with it, would be Gary Neville. I wouldn't let Giggs anywhere near it.

The issue being, I couldn't see Neville taking the job for a mere 3 months, whereas Giggs would happily fill in and see the season out before stepping aside for any new man.

I just don't have any faith in Moyes to turn the team and club around, he has shown me nothing to indicate he's got it in him to make United a top level force.......and he's losing/possibly already lost most of the better players.

For coming gw. Best captain option?

    A) Sturridge

    B) Ade

    C) Suarez

Tempted to go with Ade but think I play safe and choose Studge as a captain.

I have the same 3 but can never trust Ade's consistency enough to captain him. Great to have but not to captain.

I am looking to my midfield, but if just those 3 maybe Studge is the way to go ...... to hard to ignore

Is it fair to assume that the Palace vs Everton game is likely to be rearranged to GW31 like most of the other fixtures? If that's the case, Palace become the only side who have games in each of GW28, 29 and 30 and then a DGW31. They are also reasonable fixtures.

Perhaps Puncheon then makes more sense than Snodgrass?
