Van Gaal Confirmed as United Boss

After weeks of speculation, Manchester United finally confirmed Louis Van Gaal as their new manager earlier this afternoon.

The Dutchman has signed a three-year contract at Old Trafford and has named Ryan Giggs as his assistant manager, with Frans Hoek and Marcel Bout coming on board as assistant coaches.

Van Gaal will take over the helm once the Netherlands’ participation in this summer’s World Cup comes to an end and is expected to be handed a considerable budget as the Red Devils attempt to put last year’s miserable seventh place finish behind them. Speaking to the club’s official website, the 62-year-old went on to say:

“It was always a wish for me to work in the Premier League. To work as a manager for Manchester United, the biggest club in the world, makes me very proud. I have managed in games at Old Trafford before and know what an incredible arena Old Trafford is and how passionate and knowledgeable the fans are. This club has big ambitions; I too have big ambitions. Together I’m sure we will make history.”

We’ll have a Moving Target piece on Van Gaal’s installation later in the week as we look at the potential knock-on effect, both from a tactical and personnel perspective, his appointment is expected to have.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

      Football
      1. (could go on and on, but here are some of the chaps I enjoyed watching play). Zidane, Hasselbaink, Ronaldo (part 1), Stoichkov, Iván Zamorano, Romario, Ronald Koeman, Laudrup, and from my days as a wee lad growing up going to Cleveland Force games: Keith Furphy http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keith_Furphy)
      2. - Guayaquil, Ecuador: game between Barcelona Sporting Club and Club Sport Emelec - 1997. Rumors swirled around the city that Maradona was going to play, though he didn't. Either way, it was a packed stadium and a pulsating environment.
      Or
      - Seville, Spain: Spain vs. Sweden friendly. 1995. First time seeing such big time teams play a game in such a stadium. Some great goals from Spain. And, there were some Spanish guys in the stands with boda bags full of wine and a large platter of cheese, ham, etc. that they were more than happy to share with me and my friend.
      3. Best goal....hmmmmm. Perhaps during an Atletico Madrid match that I attended when studying in Spain in 1999-2000. My two friends headed to the concession stalls early to beat the halftime crowd, and a wonderful goal off a throw-in was scored. The guy tossed it in, a teammate chested it, then thighed it, then turned and crossed. A teammate got on the end of it and put it in the onion bag. Ball never touched the ground and the goal was simply a delight to behold.

      Non Football
      1. Once again, multiple answers could suffice here, but I'll go with my trip across Peru (included a stop in Machu Picchu).
      2. Favorite cuisine. Tough again. Probably would have to say French. Never ate a bad thing there. Not that I can recall, anyways. Everything was delicious.
      3. Gig/band. This is a tough one, as I have so many interests in music and have been to quite a few great shows. Maybe my favorite gig was a reggae show in Benbow, California (Humboldt County). Toots and the Maytals played and were followed by Ziggy Marley and other Bob Marley sons who mostly covered Marley songs. The herb was in good supply, as were other things, and the surrounding scenery spectacular.

      Bonus:
Dinner party guests - why not, let's go with these 3: Einstein, B. Marley, and Abraham Lincoln.
