Van Gaal Confirmed as United Boss

After weeks of speculation, Manchester United finally confirmed Louis Van Gaal as their new manager earlier this afternoon.

The Dutchman has signed a three-year contract at Old Trafford and has named Ryan Giggs as his assistant manager, with Frans Hoek and Marcel Bout coming on board as assistant coaches.

Van Gaal will take over the helm once the Netherlands’ participation in this summer’s World Cup comes to an end and is expected to be handed a considerable budget as the Red Devils attempt to put last year’s miserable seventh place finish behind them. Speaking to the club’s official website, the 62-year-old went on to say:

“It was always a wish for me to work in the Premier League. To work as a manager for Manchester United, the biggest club in the world, makes me very proud. I have managed in games at Old Trafford before and know what an incredible arena Old Trafford is and how passionate and knowledgeable the fans are. This club has big ambitions; I too have big ambitions. Together I’m sure we will make history.”

We’ll have a Moving Target piece on Van Gaal’s installation later in the week as we look at the potential knock-on effect, both from a tactical and personnel perspective, his appointment is expected to have.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

On a more serious note, how are LVGs pressers? Dont think i can deal with another see of 'he's got a chance', 'we'll see how he is tomorrow' or 'theres a few knocks and niggles in the squad'

So we all seem pretty set that this is good for RVP - but what does it mean for Rooney?

If it weren't for the whopping new contract last year, I think a lot of people would be saying this is the end for him.

I thought the big question this summer was always going to be RVP vs Rooney, I don't see how both of them can survive another season in the same team when they clearly can't function together up front.. Or maybe Van Gaal is the only one who can get them to work.. Who knows, I think this is edging Rooney towards the exit though, who knows if the right offer comes in, but who can pay those wages?

Everything I hear about Van Gaal, one key piece of info keeps coming out... "RVP is the main man"

I've just heard on talkSPORT that he's made the Dutch public go mad as he's change his standard 30yr 4-3-3 system to a 5-3-2 to get the best out of RVP! (I'm assuming they have more quality defenders than attack, I don't know)

Could we see in our fpl teams a front 3 of RVP, Suarez & Aguero?!?! Prob be priced at 12m, 14/15m & 12m respectively?!?....

That front three would leave the rest of the team in ruin. I think it'll be a choice of two and a mediocre team or one and a decent team

I expect RVP to be about 11.5, Suarez 12.5 and Aguero at 11.5

Actually yea just thinking of RVP's price hike 😕 probably will be around the 14.0 mark

Really think RVP and Aguero will be that high?

Aguero only started as 11.0 this year and with all the injuries he's had FPL might overlook a big rise?

Generally in the past theyve been pretty good at sticking to their own internal rules governing prices - ie its more or less dependent on how much they score in a season as a total. Which is why it can be great if a player only scores well in half a season, players arriving in the league or returning from injury.

I'd agree with you but Coutinho and Siggurdsson plus Papiss Cisse wouldn't. I reckon it is more to do with points per game and partly to do with their total score as well as their historical score.

I have no idea how fpl calculate player starting prices, but Aguero will surely rise, his points per mins was pretty solid I think... RVP (as you say) will drop, but not by much 1-2m at best

Shameless repost as it was on bottom of previous article but im in a pickle until I have it sorted...

I am setting up a World Cup fantasy football mini league for friends.

Has anyone on here put together a list of the available World Cup Fantasy football games on offer?

Would really prefer a free one so the entry fee can go 100% into the prize pot.

I would go like to go with the official Fifa McDonalds one, but i really dont think its feasible when it doesnt open until the 8th June, just wondered what other options there are? I emailed FIFA last Thursday to ask them why they cant open the game earlier but have had no reply (No real Surprises there!)

    Any advice much appreciated...

Just picking a team now and have set up a mini league then will see about sending it out if all looks ok. Epic - have you registered and set up a team?

Sarje - I will also download the app and try that one out too.

Then just go with the one that works best i guess, I have a mate who is also organising a mini league so I willl get him to do the same.

He told Chelsea's official club website: "It was difficult to leave because I had a great time in my three years at Chelsea and I made a lot of friends. There was no time to say goodbye because the deal was closed on the Wednesday at 10 o'clock in the evening and the following morning I had to fly. If I have one day off I would want to come back and say goodbye because to the fans I owe a big thank you because they were always good to me. In my three years I won all the prizes there are to win in England."

It would just fit the whole "fickle footballers" stereotype perfectly to see him turn out for United 7 years later.

...wait, that was seven years ago?! 😯

Not a fierce rivalry, but if you had to pick one of Chelsea's biggest rivals of the last decade it would be United or Arsenal probably.. and "In my three years I won all the prizes there are to win in England." means that he has nothing left to do in England glory-wise..

    From BBC:

Asked in a 2013 Fifa interview what makes him one of the best coaches, Van Gaal said: "The philosophy. It's one that binds players with their coaches.
"In my career I've found players are fascinated by my philosophy. It's an attacking, technical and tactical philosophy.
"You have to play as a team and not as an individual. I'm looking to see who fits in my system - 4-3-3 - whether it is a young or old player. Age is not important."

This pretty much kills Mata as a prospect then. May however work out for Shinji if he can nail down that LW spot

So he doesn't progress as a player and has to play at a standard lower than he is capable of?

He's one of the best attacking mids in the world, he should be on the big stage playing in front of thousands upon thousands of people and inspiring youngsters, not trying to play positions he doesn't play, or sitting on the bench, or playing for Rotherham, no offence to Rotherham intended.

This is a good article on the type of players LVG likes in each position (straight from the horses mouth so to speak)

          http://livelifeunited.com/imagining-louis-van-gaal/

Given what LVG says in that article I doubt Rooney will be given one of the three midfield roles or the no10 role as LVG likes a pure no 10 in this role, a thinker and a creator which Rooney is not imo.

I don't know where Rooney fits in unless he can find a place on one of the wings maybe but I reckon it will be Mata or Kagawa who will be the nailed on play maker for the team.

I guess it is a case of watch this space and see who emerges as the utd no10 for next year.

He's a 4-3-3 man, but not to the point of ignoring the qualities of the players at his disposal. He played a sort of 4-4-2 at AZ, for example, and he moved Bayern towards a 4-2-3-1 with Muller playing off Gomez. The situation with Mata is the same as it was before - if he plays in the hole, he's a great FPL option, if he's forced out wide, less so.

    Van Gaal in.
Does he stick with all the old Utd dregs like Giggs etc, or boot them all out for the clean start that Moyes never got?
What about SAF? The ever present spectre at the party. Can anyone really stop him interfering or would getting rid of the the old playing and coaching staff be enough?

Sorry it's several questions, but I'm genuinely interested.

People said Moyes was wrong to get red of Mulensteen and Phelan but I reckon he had to or else he would not have had any authority.

I think the mistake Moyes made was not going deeper and getting rid of some of the older players too which would have made the players that stuck around realise who was boss as I think some of them really took the piss last year.

If it was me I'd boot giggs and let him and scholes, butt etc coach the kids and with Ferdinand, Vidic and Evra leaving I think that would leave him with not too many SAF old boys fighting against every tactical change. I think he needs to make up his mind what he is going to do with Rooney and RVP too as I don't think he will try and play them up front together so one either has to go or sacrifice themselves and play on the wing or as an impact sub. I don't envy whoever takes over there and think next season could be another bumpy one for UTD.

        Beat me by second.

Would have said Arsenal or villa, though, had they not been said earlier.

I think it is this, as it apparently was neither Arsenal nor Villa.

yeah. so it is. Quite surprising.

Villa actually drops pretty far. I thought I read Villa has conceded very much penalties in premier league and thought that could correspond with number of red cards too. And Arsenal has got more than their fair share of red cards.

That Blackburn has managed to beat them all with 75 red cards despite missing 4 seasons of top flight football is quite surprising to say the least.

Times up. Can't believe no one guessed Blackburn after what Nate said. He had already gotten it wrong in his first attempt!

I don't get how this works now. It can be one that has been said already? Rules changed since last time?

Okay, in the case, I say Aston Villa.

No rules change, you only get one attempt at answering the whole question. Sorry not Villa!
