World Cup 2014

World Cup 2014 – Team Analysis – Brazil

As some of you may have noticed, there’s a tournament taking place in Brazil next month. The 2014 World Cup kicks off on Thursday June 12 – just six days before the new Premier League fixture list is announced – and lasts all the way until Sunday July 13, filling the time perfectly until Fantasy managers can begin to plan for the new domestic campaign:

We’ll be covering a handful of Fantasy games for the upcoming tournament (more on that later in the week) and as the days begin to tick down, we kick off our coverage with Group A and run the rule over host nation, Brazil.

Phil Scolari’s side get the tournament underway on Thursday June 12 at 9pm against Croatia, then square up to Mexico five days later at 8pm before entertaining Cameroon in their final Group A match on June 23 at 9pm:

The tournament favourites, they captured last year’s Confederations Cup in convincing style, winning all six games including triumphs over the likes of France, Italy, Uruguay and Spain. Such rampant form means that Fantasy managers will be desperate to load up on the South Americans and their chances of delivering us early points are boosted by a scheduling quirk which means that both Brazil and Mexico both play twice in the first round of fixtures. Their June 17 showdown, which takes place at 8pm, kicks off before Russia face South Korea in the second match of Group H at 11pm the same evening – the downside is that Brazil and Mexico are without a match in Matchday 2.

Recent Friendlies

Since Scolari returned to the helm, Brazil have played a total of 20 times. Starting off with a Wembley defeat to England, the South Americans won one and drew four of Big Phil’s first six matches but have since found their form and, having adjusted to a change in style, have triumphed in 13 of the last 14, with a defeat in Switzerland last year the only blip on an otherwise perfect record.

Having analysed the teamsheets, we list the main performers for Scolari’s side from the start of last June’s Confederations Cup onwards, in a run that has seen them score 42 times and concede just six, with nine clean sheets accrued in that 14-match streak.

Most Starts Neymar (14), Paulinho, David Luiz (13), Thiago Silva, Oscar, Luiz Gustavo (11), Julio Cesar, Marcelo, Hulk (10)

Top Scorers Neymar (11), Fred, Jo (5), Oscar (4)

Most Assists Neymar (7), Paulinho (4), Oscar, Fred (3)

The Key Targets

As the above stats show, Neymar is the standout option by some distance. The only player to start every one of the previous 14 fixtures, he fired a hat-trick in Brazil’s final friendly against South African – handed a role on the left of a 4-2-3-1 formation, the Barcelona man has scored or assisted in 12 of those matches; a clear indication of his excellent consistency.

Chelsea’s Oscar looks vital to Scolari’s side – providing he has fully recovered from the thigh strain that curtailed his domestic game time at the end of the season. Having cemented the role as most advanced central midfielder for the hosts, Oscar has produced three goals and an assist in his last five appearances for his country. Up front, Fred is Scolari’s number one when fully fit. He’s featured in only one of the last seven matches due to a long-term thigh problem, though, but still managed to produce five goals and three assists in eight starts.

At the back, investment amongst Scolari’s regulars may well come down to both player price and scoring system across the Fantasy games. Given their recent resilience, many will be eyeing up the likes of attacking full-backs Dani Alves or Marcelo, though it worth noting that both have managed just an assist apiece over those 14 matches. David Luiz and Thiago Silva are nailed-on at the heart of the back-four and the Chelsea man’s penchant for a long shot may persuade some to snap him up if he’s cheaper than the Brazilian skipper.

The Long Shots

An inconsistent figure in the Premier League last term, Tottenham’s Paulinho has played all but one of the previous 14 and is a key figure in the centre of the park – he’s chipped in with an assist in four of the last five games for his country. He looks assured of his start in central midfield and will be given the freedom to bomb forward with the security of Luiz Gustavo anchoring in the middle of the park.

Whilst it’s difficult to see anyone eclipsing Neymar amongst Scolari’s main men in attack, Hulk could be worth a flutter. Having started 10 of the last 14 on the opposite flank and emerged from the bench on a couple of occasions, he seems to have found his form in recent matches, grabbing two goals and a trio of assists in the last three friendlies.

Finally, if Fred struggles for full fitness, back-up option Jo may come into contention – he has scored five times from 12 appearances, with seven of those coming courtesy of the bench.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

I don't know yet. McDonalds will be the main game I play, so I may have one, probably Messi. But in my Betfred Fantasy iTeam I have Fred - Pedro - Gutierrez.

Actually I take that back, Gervinho could be a good pick, he racked up 7 assists in the qualifiers.

The only player I'd pick from Switzerland is Schär. A young centre back who picked up three goals in the qualifiers. Switzerland have a decent chance at keeping a few clean sheets as well. Could be good if he's cheap.

And from France, I'm definitely having Ribery in all my teams. He racked up 5 goals and 6 assists in the qualifiers. France's too goal scorer and assister in the qualifiers. Also, Valbuena could be a good differential pick, he got 5 assists in the qualifiers.

Morning. Personally I think France might be bit of a let down as in WC 2010.

Winner/runner up of their group(E) meet winner/runner up of group F which should be Argies/Bosnia. If Switzerland top group E it could be the end of the road for France vs Argentina.

Sakho (or Kosc) also have a decent chance to keep a clean sheets against Honduras and Ecuador. France and Honduras will play in gameround 1. I think Benzema will explode in this tournament, just like a Balloteli.

What about Brazil and Spain ? And why Pedro ?

Yeah sorry, I forgot to look at France's defenders. I have Koscielny too. Because I couldn't afford any other Spanish forwards.

Basically, what you'll find out in my articles that I have and will be writing is that Spain and Brazil are the two sides you should be loading up on. For various reasons. You'll see what I mean in around a weeks time.

When it comes to the Maccy D game I disagree with you. No need to load up on the big hitters from Brazil/Holland/Spain. I think the format of the game and the actual draw makes it possible to do well without some of their players in the group stages.

"Sources say Roman has granted permission to extend contract of either Lampard or Cole by one year. I think Mou would keep Lampard and let go Cole. So, signing a LB & ST would be top priority for Chelsea this summer."

Southampton line up Swansea left back Neil Taylor to replace Manchester United-bound Luke Shaw.

Inter Milan are interested in Coentrao.. Sources say he is set to sign a new contract extension until June 2018 after the Champions League final in Lisbon – and will earn €4m per season.

not sure if van Gaal would want to spend (approximately) 25-30m pounds of his budget on a left-back, as good as Shaw can turn out to be. Doubt that's his priority now, and doubt Southampton would let him leave for considerably lesser than that.

    Quote from Euro 2012

Sergio Busquets’ role in front of the defence helped him to a five point haul against France in the quarter finals, thanks to 10 recovered balls. Indeed, the 6.5 priced midfielder has earned an extra point for recovered balls in all of his appearances so far and has outscored far pricier options such as Xavi or Andres Iniesta in the McDonald’s game

Therefore if they keep one point for each recovered ball, Busquets looks to get a minimum of 8 points per game. He would have got 13 plus in the mentioned France game!

The 32 teams will be allocated into four pots based on their 2014 UEFA club coefficients, with the title holders being placed in Pot 1 automatically. They will be drawn into eight groups of four, with the restriction that teams from the same association cannot be drawn against each other.

Champions League holders Liverpool and favourites Chelsea have been drawn in the same group for the first phase of this season's competition.

As a Chelsea fan I remember!

seems it was UEFA (anti English) who made them play in the same group.

"Liverpool were denied the usual "country protection" when UEFA gave them special dispensation to defend their title via the qualifying rounds after not qualifying automatically through their Premier League position."

    Goalkeepers in MCs

With 6 points for a clean sheet and 1 point for each save, what is the best approach?

Pick a keeper in a tight group eg Casillas Neur Buffon, where they have chance of save points also.

Or Courtois Akinfeev Lloris where they have near guaranteed clean sheets but less chance of save points.

They both face their toughest game Matchday 2

        France v Switzerland
        Russia v Belguim

It does allow save points to come into the equation though and would still back France for a clean sheet.

    WTF News!!

Dimitri Seluk, the agent of Yaya Toure, has threatened his client could leave Manchester City after the club forgot to acknowledge the midfielder's birthday.

"There is a big possibility Yaya will leave this summer. He is very upset. What happened at his birthday means the club don't care about him. It was proof. They can say whatever they want, "Oh we like him but we forgot". Forgot? About Yaya? The player who helped you to be two-times Premier League champions? The guy who helped you win the FA Cup and League Cup?"

Agree , some of the assumptions ie point scoring eg Chiellini are off the wall ,
It looks like he's your (c) lol , def are becoming more important than strikers eg Neymar lol ,
Fantasy football was mostly based on goals / assists - granted Rb etc have crept into the game but as the McDs game stands - it's hilarious and I don't think I'll play it if it doesn't get amended.

Seems this game is trying to get rid of the idea that the cheapest route into a good defence is the best way to pick your team and reward the better (more expensive) defenders this time round with all the recovered balls and blocked shots points etc.

The better the defender, the lower the number of blocks in general. Blocks are usually an indicator of a shite defence as the better defenders cut out the danger before it gets anywhere near the goal.

He's second behind Caulker for blocks/game.

              Caulker: 1.55
              Collins: 1.38

              Next is about 1.2

That was my tweet. Playing devil's advocate a bit based on yesterday's appointment at ManU, but at the same time I can see a significant swing for Man U this season. Van Gaal is a proven winner and we saw this season with Liverpool how a team not in Europe can really benefit. Feel free to leave a comment on the twitter thread though and retweet to your friends. 🙂

  26. Will 2014/15 see the biggest choice of big hitters yet?
    Saint Steve-O (@EliteFPL)

Was thinking yesterday after predictions on 3 of the big hitting strikers in fpl (RVP, Suarez & Aguero) price wise. We agreed between 12-15m each, with that in mind (& I believe Jonty did a quick piece on this) will next years fpl (as players stand) be the most diverse yet?

I mean, we will have (based on this year) so many point scorers at such high prices, we could actually see differentials all over teams & break that horrible bandwagon template teams which cost so many of us this season gone.

Do we pick YaYa or Hazard (both will prob 11m) or both? The 3 aforementioned above potentially 59m combined alone. Aaron Ramsey people suggesting 9m+

These are just a few examples of players we will all look at (that consistently scored last year) & doesn't even take into account injuries that could happen before season starts or most importantly transfers in & out of the Premiership.

In terms of Mid and Attack cover last season was all about Liverpool and ManC players, with Ramsey offering value and Hazard the only Che option.

This season will see a hike in prices for all of those assets plus ManU assets being attractive, as well as Arsenal and Chelsea getting a new striker in all likelihood.

If only three big hitters are realistic next season could shape up to being the most untemplate of them all.

Oscar proved to not be a very good option though. In fact he was only good in a couple of games really and they were a surprise. Hazard arguably also was patchy and uncaptain worthy.

A proper scoring Chelsea striker is what fantasy football badly needs to shake things up a bit.

I think the impact of Suarez was easily overstated in the last 10 or so games (Cardiff aside). After his incredible run at Christmas (when options are always reduced and focusing on essentials is a good idea) most of us were afraid to overlook him, but the damage would've been limited.

If Argentina go all the way in the World Cup, it could make avoiding Aguero at the beginning easier. Yaya goes to the ACON in Jan, so we won't have to own him then, if it all. I can see there being a lot more big hitters, but it won't be too hard to avoid some of them.

Not to mention a Chelsea striker, Liverpool fixture buildup and more...

Agree that it does seem like it could potentially be great, although we all know how quickly our options can be whittled down with no more than a few injuries or dips in form. Hopefully at least come the start of the season variation is plentiful.

      Lots to choose from.

Walcott Hazard Yaya Ozil Ramsey Silva Gerrard Nasri Mata
RVP Rooney Suarez Sturridge Aguero 'Chelsea-striker' 'Arsenal-striker'

      .
If I had to pick 3 atm, with no fixtures/pre-season/prices, I'd pick RVP, Aguero, Walcott, I think.

Suarez at 14m, with UCL, may be a bit too far for my budget given the other alternatives for the striker spots

We're all football fans, follow whatever means necessary to get right players, but this year (as explained perfectly by Mark in last scoutcast) you didn't need 'knowledge' of footy sadly to do well this year...... & as Aaron Ramessi states, any differential either failed or (what infuriated me more) was they'd score exactly the same as a template ie if I had Bony & capped him as differential from Suarez, they'd both get same points.

Next year I really hope these heavy hitters break up the mould :-/ could actually see proper strategies come into play, ie people like myself loading up on attack & go 3-4-3, whereas others could go the defensive route in 4-3-3/5-3-2 formations

They exist primarily due to sites like this and the fact that at any given point in time there are almost certainly not enough highly scoring players to make a differential very possible. Even then any emergent differential that is successful will be quickly absorbed by the template system.

If the scoring were tweaked again then that could result in possible differentials. I dont really like constant rule changes, but in this case I think i would like to see it as its one way i might be able to stay ahead of the masses.

With a lot of teams playing 4-5-1 (4-3-3) a tasty midfield in a 3-5-2 could be worth an experiment with Dzeko, Sturridge (i.e. The cheaper half of the main strike forces) or a cheaper main man like Bony, Lukaku.

Will obviously hurt if Aguero or Suarez go mental though.

Sorry, I was meaning people with knowledge of footy were seeming to get punished & casuals just jumped on these bandwagons & did well. (My point didn't come across well lol)

Exactly it Patrick 🙂 real strategies could come into play & could have us not just asking what cap & transfer a rivals doing, but what formation

If a player is playing well in a good team then it makes sense to get him in and get him in early. Eg YYT and Ramsey.

Confidence goes a long way and there are no stats for that. Dzeko couldn't hit a barn door early in the season but was in the right places to miss them and eventually he came good, getting him in at the end of the season was pretty sensible.

If you have a player in your park's team that couldn't stop scoring and creating and was high on confidence then you'd want to get the ball to him as often as possible to win games.

          Aww shucks, I'm rambling here...

Template teams are not necessarily a bad thing for the experienced player imo.

Normally a template team only lasts for a few gws as it usually consists of form players so by the time the casuals bring in the form players to create the template the experienced player is usually looking at who to swap these players out for I.e. who will be the next form player.

Every year the players that hit form in the first half of the season are quickly gathered into a template team but they rarely sustain this form over a whole season so the experienced knowledgeable player can usually make up big ground by going away from this template while the casuals just see the overall score of a player and think they can't drop them.

I have had many seasons where I have railed against illogical bandwagons pre Xmas only to find myself lagging behind in the second half of the season before through sticking to my principles and only getting on logical wagons I inevitably turn it around into a respectable finish.

I guess what I'm saying is template teams are not all bad as the experienced players can beat them by looking past this week's template to get in the players that will be in the template in the future before everyone else gets them.

Yeah, I can't see the rules staying like this. It's going to be an even bigger lottery then usual.

          I think it's -1 for every 3 fouls though...but that's on top of the a -1 for a yellow card.

GW1 is usually the point in the season we know the least.

Given this, do you usually set up your GW1 team to cover a range of price brackets to allow easy swaps for the in-form players?

Or do you prefer a more lop sided structure with as many big hitters as possible and then some gap fillers?

First one..no one gets it right in the first go...so I cover the range of price and wait at least GW3 for transfer so that I have 2 FT's

The last 2 seasons were effected by the DGW. It will be nice to have a "normal" GW 1 for a change.

This year I will tackle it differently. I aim to bring in certain players I know im highly likely to want to keep and the rest will be based on whoever i think is most likely to do the best in the opening 4-5 gwks.

If this is successful then great. If not it means an early wildcard. (which i think is very definitely the best strategy if you dont have the right players). I would argue that an early WC is odds on unless you get lucky. This allows me to be a little less bothered about initial selection as i know its likely to change.

I couldn't agree more. An early WC can be so powerful. Later on in the season, we all have similar teams anyway, so it's less effective.

I always have started a season with it going as my team of season, this year, think I will go with whatever heavy hitters I choose & my cheapies being chosen week by week (transfer wise in/out)

I'd wait for the regular Phil McNulty BBC Article, if he puts Arsenal out of the Top 4, then you are guaranteed a top 4 finish 😀

It basically depends on the signings..If Arsenal manage to sign some good players then yes 4th spot is again yours..but I feel United will come in the top 4 next season so 1 team will be out so it will be between Liverpool and Arsenal..
