Projections & Rate My Team Are Live

The Projections and Rate My Team tool were both updated in our Members Area earlier this week. Our members can now get access to these areas via the menu bar and start putting both to use in their pre-season selections.

Once again this season, the projections are based on the Rate My Team statistical model, developed by “Professor” Chris Atkinson, who some of you may remember as a guest on the ScoutCast.

Below you’ll find an FAQ on our Projections and Rate My Team, plus links to movies recorded last year with Chris that talk you through the functionality of Rate My Team and even the methods that go into building and maintaining it week on week.

How do I use the Projections?
Crucially, these tables can be used as another opinion-former when comparing players. Every player is rated for goals, assists, clean sheets etc based on values created by the “Rate My Team” statistical model – the values returned for each player are the expected values in accordance with its calculations.

A good way of thinking about them is to consider them average values for each player. If the season was played out 500 times, the values you’ll find in these projection tables are the average that the model would expect the player to score.

One of the most useful aspects of the Projections is the value column. You can sort by this to find the best value (Points Per FPL Million) delivered by players in each position.

With tables for the season and the opening six Gameweeks, you can get a view on long-term and short-term returns and value.

What are these values based on?
The Rate My Team statistical model is a complex beast – it uses historical data stretching back a number of seasons and, of course, specific player and team data. When generating the player values, the model looks at the specific fixture in each Gameweek, assessing the strength of both teams before calculating the likely team goals scored and how these goals will translate to specific player stats. The probability of a player taking part in the match is also a key ingredient – factors such as rotation, injuries and suspensions are taken into account. You’ll find out more on how Rate My Team works in the third movie due out in the next few days.

When will these Projections be updated?
It’s likely that we’ll update the projections at least every other day up until the season kick-off. As we get more data on likely first choice lineups and as the transfer market moves to cast doubt over starters, we will adapt and tweak the model accordingly. A new player, particularly if we anticipate they will threaten a starting role, can have a major impact on the projections and Rate My Team, influencing the projected output of his new team-mates.

The projections will also be updated throughout the season, providing a week by week view of what the model expects each player to score for the remaining Gameweeks to help guide your selections and transfers. We normally update on both Tuesday and Friday in order to build the latest team news into the numbers.

What is Rate My Team?
Rate My team is a statistical model built specifically to assess every player in the Premier League and return their expected values for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points in a given Gameweek. The system is a complex and thorough one which, of course, plots the probabilities of a player’s time on the pitch, their expected number of goals, assists, bonus points, yellow and red cards, clean sheets, own goals, goals conceded and saves. The strength of the opponent they are facing in a given Gameweek is also crucial; so every team has an attacking, defensive rating, every player a probability of playing a given match with injuries, suspensions and international absence factored in.

How Can It Help Me?
If you’re a member you can use the Rate My Team tool in a number of ways. Firstly, you can use it as a projections tool to predict what specific players will score, on average, over the next X number of Gameweeks. As you’ll see in the movie below, you have a players table that can be filtered by position or FPL cost and which can be extended to show any number of Gameweeks. You can also sort on “Value” to find those players projected to offer the best points per million return.

However, this is just one part of the functionality. Once the season starts, Rate My Team can also analyse your existing FPL lineup, recommend captains, vice captains, your bench and order of substitutes and allow you to model your future transfers. In the second “My Team” movie below, you can preview this functionality in full.

Rather than post your team in the comments on the main site, our members can now enter their FPL code in Rate My Team and it will immediately offer you an appraisal of your squad. Using Rate my Team you can transfer players in and out of your squad and get an immediate appraisal of the impact of that transfer.

Rate my Team was used extensively by last season’s Fantasy Premier League winner, Tom Fenley. Next week he’ll be posting a two-part article guiding you on how he set about using the tool and other members’ area features to help him over his triumphant season.

Memberships for the coming season, giving you access to both the projections and Rate My Team tool, along with many other features, are available for the pre-season price of £12.50. Click here for further details, including an array of preview movies to demonstrate what’s on offer.

      Mine is quite similar
      Mannone, Krul
      Luis, Shaw, Wisdom, (targett, santon)
      Hazard, Sanchez, Cabella, (brady, davis)
      RVP, Pelle, Remy

I currently have 1 mil to spare to adjust for transfers

If brady starts for hull then he's a steal. In the few outings he had last year he really showed up outclassed most people on the team, held back only by injury, my punt
I'm not sold on davis just kind of filling a space until i figure out what i want to do.
If remy completes his move to liverpool then he's a must, a fantasy gem who could shine playing for a team of much higher calibre than before.
What i've read from pelle he's definitely worth a shout.

Myhill won't play ahead of Foster. Ivanovic could be downgraded to Cahill or Terry or at a gamble either Azpilicueta/Luis.
Mertesacker could be swapped for Debuchy.
If Remy signs for Liverpool, make a choice between him and Sturridge

Sadly that Remy deal seems to have fallen through. Something about an issue with his medical.

Seems as though Sturridge and Lambert are the only real strike options at Liverpool.
Dzeko, Giroud and Riviere seem the only reasonable replacements around that price range.

Defence seems a little expensive which is why your forwards lack conviction.
Try researching some 4.5-5mil defenders who are likely to play and have favourable game weeks over half the season such as Newcastle, Sunderland, Stoke and Swansea

You have a Man U keeper and defender. Try switching Shaw to Lovren or Debuchy, then try to either upgrade Riviere to Pelle or squeeze another 1mil from somewhere to upgrade Schurrle to Fabregas who is likely to play more often and create more assists.

I have De Gea and Shaw because I feel Manchester have a pretty easy draw for the first 6 or so weeks and I don't see them conceding a whole lot of goals. But i might have to consider Debuchy. As for Riviere I watched him play live in Newcastle and I was really impressed by him. I think he'll do well. You're right about Cesc and Schurrle though, Fabregas is a genius, I'll have to find the extra .5 somewhere. Thanks bud

I am trying to cover many teams, so having Sanchez and Ramsey is excessive. Try upgrading your defence to De Gea and Debuchy or upgrade Remy to Dzeko or Rooney if the funds are available.

Howard is a solid choice btu nto for opening fixtures, Mannone offers good points as backup,
Sagna not gauranteed to start, will be rotated a lot with Zabeleta, rest of the defence looks good (Lovren if Liverpool can stop leaking goals this season (fingers crossed))
Markovic is an unknown quantity and his value all depends on how Liverpool line up and if he will start
Herrera is likely to play quite deep for united and although should be a good player for them, that may not transfer to fantasy points as he isn;t really known for his goal scoring or assists.
Gerrard should provide goals from freekciks and penalties and assists so long as he can stay fit and depending on how BR chooses to rotate the squad with CL this season. Ramsey should continue to be a good fantasy option following on from last year.
Shelvey a good back up, bit erratic but should eb able to add some goals and assists.
Ings is likely to be Burnley's best option, but his value will all depend on how many chances he gets in front of goal.
Bony and Giroud standard high scoring fantasy players and good to have in the team.

Ok im thinking Chelsea, Utd and Stoke (bar City week 3) are among those with the best fixtures for the first 6 or so games. City will score whenever to whoever though I guess.

    GK - Courtois (Myhill)
DEF - Cameron Terry Evans Davies (Bruce)
MID - Ramsey Mata Eriksen (Albrighton El Ahmadi)
    FWD - Costa Dzeko Rooney

    Reasoning..

Courtois - Hate to spend big on GK, but have cash spare (Begovic was a close 2nd). Keeping ear to the ground on whether he will be front runner for no.1 spot, potential for clean sheets + bonus if hes all hes cracked up to be with very favourable fixtures to start.
Davies - Huge potential for assists and clean sheets if poch gets our defence anything like the saints last season.
Evans - Tipped to feature heavily under Van Gaal. Evans or Jones a must for the first 6 GWs.
Terry - Joses el capitan and rock at the back, potential for goals too. For me the only stand out cert to start every game (if fit).
Cameron - Bargain. end of. Plus very reasonable fixtures, stoke always chance for clean sheet at home.
Ramsey, Mata (VC) & Eriksen - all tipped to feature heavily in the no.10 role. Assists aplenty. Mata, great pre season and both Eriksen and Ramsay no world cup fatigue. (Ramsay tipped to play behind striker too.)
Dzeko - May change to Jovetic. We will have to wait and see. But has to be one or the other, Aguero wont start for a couple of games and of course Negredo out.
Costa - Final piece of the puzzle for Chelsea
Rooney - Back in form according to how he is killing pre season. Definite captain.

    Ommissions

Silva, Herrera, Nasri, Zab, Luis, Azpi - rotation risk
Hazard - really want him in there but its either him or costa and I know how important it is to spend big on strikers.
No Liv players make it just because of their fixtures. May have to free up something to bandwagon sterling if he starts scoring.
Yaya - 1 mill cheaper and he would def be worth it. too much at 11.
Sanchez - think ramsay is better value for money. We may see my words eaten here and a swap with costa will be on the cards come GW3.

Thoughts please guys.. never happy so suggestions always appreciated! Especially bench suggestions.
