Scout Report – Filipe Luís

José Mourinho continued his early summer spending with the capture of Brazil international Filipe Luís from La Liga champions Atlético Madrid in a deal understood to approach £16m. The 28-year-old Luis, described by Chelsea as an “attack-minded left back”, played an integral role in helping Los Rojiblancos to their first La Liga title in 18 years and the Champions League Final in the season gone by.

Having allowed Ashley Cole to depart Stamford Bridge for Roma earlier in the summer, Jose Mourinho underlined the reasons for the Brazilian’s acquisition, with the Blues boss hinting at the impact (and potential Fantasy headache) Luis’ arrival is likely to bring:

“We needed a pure left-back, a real left-back… We always felt that Filipe was a very stable player and one which gave us multi-solutions because I can play Azpi right-back and Ivanovic centre-back because of Filipe”

THE HISTORY

Luís began his youth career at Figueirense Futebol Clube, before catching the eye of Ajax’s development team in 2004. He subsequently spent a year on loan in Amsterdam, learning the game in Ajax’s prestigious youth academy before returning to Figueirense to earn a place in their first team, making 22 appearances over two seasons and scoring his first professional goal.

In 2005, Luis made his second loan move to Europe. Snapped up by Real Madrid, he was handed a starting berth for the club’s B team in the Spanish second division and proceeded to make 37 appearances before being farmed out to Deportivo La Coruna for the following season. While the Brazilian failed to earn a place in Joan Capdevila’s side, he did enough to extend his spell at the club for a further year and went on to nail down a role as the first choice left back, accruing 52 league appearances and finding the net once.

The 2008/09 season was really Luís’ breakout year. Signed on a permanent deal by Deportivo, he started life as a Galician proper in style, notching a pair of goals in an ever-present debut campaign. But for injury, his second year could have been even stronger; Luís notched another three goals in his 21-game season despite suffering a broken fibula in January 2010.

In the summer of 2010 Atlético Madrid came calling. After battling for his place in the starting XI, Luís went on to nail down the left back role and remained a key part of a much-lauded side that went on to lift the Copa del Ray (2013), La Liga (2014) and earned a spot in last year’s Champions League final. One hundred and twenty seven league appearances and two goals later, Luís brings his tenacious attitude and wealth of experience to West London as José Mourinho prepares Chelsea for another assault on the Premier League title.

THE PROSPECTS

Given that Chelsea recorded a Premier League high 18 clean sheets in their previous campaign, any defensive changes at the Bridge are big news in the Fantasy Football realm. They are also hugely inconvenient.

Last season, Mourinho’s decision to utilise César Azpilicueta at left-back effectively brought Cole’s long and illustrious career at the Bridge to an end, with the right back demonstrating his adaptability by switching flanks to cement a role on the opposite flank. Bearing in mind both Luis and Azpilicueta are valued at 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) – making them the cheapest of Chelsea’s five senior defenders – the likelihood of starts has become a point of significant interest to Fantasy managers.

Mourinho’s quotes highlight the problem we face in selecting a nailed-on option in the Chelsea defence: Luis’ arrival triggers a domino effect in the Blues rearguard. Indeed, this exact scenario unfolded in Chelsea’s 3-1 friendly win over Vitesse Arnhem earlier in the week. Luis and Azpilicueta started as the full-backs, with Ivanovic alongside Cahill at centre-half before John Terry’s half-time introduction saw the Spaniard shift left and the Serbian right. The Chelsea skipper joined Cahill in the middle – the preferred pairing last season. Considering there are also question marks over Mourinho’s first-choice keeper for the season ahead due to Thibaut Courtois’ loan return from Atletico, it’s clear that Fantasy managers are currently in the dark over Mourinho’s intentions.

Although his final season at Deportivo, which produced three goals in 21 appearances, back up Chelsea’s claim that Luis is an attacking full-back, the stats suggest otherwise. The left-back mustered 13 attempts on goal and produced 28 key passes over 32 league appearances for Diego Simeone’s side last term – granted, that may be more than Azpilicueta’s five and 12 respectively, but this is dwarfed by Ivanovic’s 38 shots on goal last term; the Serbian also chipped in with 29 chances created.

Ultimately, though, this is a Mourinho team and there’s nothing Jose likes better than a clean sheet. In that respect, Luis’ arrival is more than understandable, with his defensive stats boding well for shut-outs. Looking at last term’s figures, although he was inferior to Azpilicueta for tackles (4.5 to 4.1), interceptions (1.8 to 1.1) and clearances (5.9 to 5.0), when compared against Ivanovic, his tackles per game (4.1 to 2.2) particularly highlight his contribution – bearing in mind Eden Hazard has a roving role on the Chelsea left flank, Mourinho’s tactics clearly call for an intelligent ball-winner, stationed behind the Belgian in his back-four.

It’s perhaps no coincidence that Chelsea mustered three clean sheets in the first 10 fixtures of last season without Azpilicueta. With the Spaniard nailed-on from Gameweek 11 onwards, the Blues served up 15 shut-outs in the final 28 matches, leading to Mourinho famously declaring he’d win the Champions League with a team of Azpilicuetas. Given such lofty praise, the Spaniard hardly seems likely to be overlooked.

Frustratingly, each of the Blues full-backs offer Mourinho such strong options that, for the time being, it’s impossible to ascertain Jose’s gameplan other that to assume rotation.

There’s no doubt that shut-outs will be served up by the London outfit. Their potential is furthered by the fact that they chalked up four clean sheets in six games against their fellow top four – underlining the appeal as fire and forget options under the “Special One”. However, with so much uncertainty surrounding their back line, a “wait and see” policy looks the preferred option, with our initial defences perhaps pre-designed to accommodate an early transfer that will see an arrival from the Blues’ squad once a more settled scenario emerges.

Going out now so I'll leave it at this. Dead-on template, some would say, but I don't mind that to start:

    Krul
    Luis Evans Cameron
    Ramsey Fabregas Mata Siggy
    Rooney Costa Dzeko

    Elliot, NTaylor, Wanyama, 4m

Taylor rotating with Cameron, subject to change if Cameron looks in further doubt.

Cheers for the assistance this morning - final thoughts?

      For me it's pretty simple.

      1) Even if he hits the numbers he did last season, he's only worth his value, no more
      2) If he doesn't, that's a lot tied up in a player you won't want to quickly drop as you brought him in for a reason, so you would want to give him time as you've altered your team to fit him in.

like i said on last page, he's too expensive. you could have:

      A. vlaar, yaya, tiote
      or
      B. huth, fab/mata/rambo/silva, siggy

that 2.0 makes a big difference when distributed correctly. Combination B will outscore A even though yaya might outscore any of the 9.0 mids.

Most saying he is too pricey.

I think after last season he should be up there in price. He is hardly a risk and has a g'tee return on set pieces bp's and goals in general.

He is in my team and I am working the rest around him. Still get a decent team including a strong mid and def with him in there.

Simply, a nailed on goalscorer and the only non mid to long term injury prone attacking player for Man City in my opinion.

Every year there are high ownership players who dive in value at the beginning of the season because they don't live up to expectations. If they don't score well in the first game many will sell and you'll have the choice of following or losing value. Yaya is potentially one of those and if you have to sell him you'll may need to re-think your whole team.

    Mannone / Krul
Debucy / van Aanholt / Mariappa / Wisdom / Dufff

Not gone on having a United def just yet until they buy one or two CBs and I'm a United fan. They will be just as leaky as last season if they don't sort it out, easy fixtures or not.

Baines - wait until fixtures improve a month or so after season begins, IMO
Kompany - nice differential, i like him
Yoshida - watch for SOT to buy another defender
      mids look great
      forwards look great

8/10 - sort out the defense

The other day I came up with an idea for an FFS community FPL team. I'm not sure if anyone else has thought of this already but if not I just want to see if anybody would be interested.

Basically it just a FPL team for the whole FFS community to be able to contribute to. I thought it could be thing where weekly I would make a post the community decides what transfers to make and teams selection etc through a poll type of thing, and what ever is the most popular choice I would make the change.
Obviously if I did it we would need to figure out a way to organise it properly so it worked smoothly and the community could leave their thoughts and votes. Picking the starting squad and WC'ing would be the most challenging part of it but if people leave suggestions and are interested I think it could work.

Not sure if that makes much sense but it was just a thought

You could set up a ML and allow others to enter and compete against the "FFS Template FC" or "FFS Bandwagon FC".

Let me know if you are going to do it! I am in.....make sure you post it in the DZ

        Not really?

Too many variables for just upvoting one player.

You'd have to start a thread with proposed transfers inside & have ppl upvote the transfer they liked / post comments for & against.

Feel free to put it forward to Mark and Jonty as well. No guarantees but its something they might be interested in if they can help in anyway.

Just as an idea though, putting it as a community article might be one way to do it, or hot topic of course. However I do concede that these may not quite be enough to get the amount of community involvement required.

  24. The case for Ramsey
    Aaron Ramessi - Straya
    • 10 Years

@ZK and any other doubters 😉

Aaron Ramsey got 146 points in 1761 minutes last season - just over half a season's worth of playing time. His 6.3 ppg provided ludicrously good value last year and even a maintenance of such a level of performance would still prove good value this season.

It is also important to note that at the beginning of last season, Ramsey had not yet discovered the confidence he know possesses in front of goal, which explains his slow start. Secondly, he suffered a dip at Christmas due to fatigue - Wenger admitted as much later in the season. If given the proper rest when required and hopefully a better fitness regime under former German fitness coach Shad Forsythe (some say the best in the world), Ramsey should be able to stay injury free.

Furthermore, Ramsey should be given just as much attacking licence this season, if not more. Wenger has given off strong hints in his most recent press conference that he will strengthen both at centre-back and defensive midfield, which would provide us with more defensive security than Arteta/Flamini/Vermaelen were able to provide last season. What's more, many fail to realise Ramsey's defensive excellence (he made an outrageous 3.2 tackles per game last season). It is not like he will be left stranded.

Also, Ramsey continues to improve both on and off the pitch. Ramsey is one of the most diligent players and he looks physically sharp already this pre-season. It is also worth noting how much more confident Ramsey is these days. He expresses himself much better on social media these days and you can see he is enjoying his football and the company of his team-mates more these days. Not to mention he still has the discipline to stay respectful and not cause any controversy. As such he is becoming a leader in the dressing room - he seems to have grown a few inches in stature this pre-season. Greater confidence equals greater performance.

The team's tactical setup should prove to be advantageous to Ramsey. If you look closely at Ramsey's goals last season he either a) makes a run into the box unmarked, receives the through ball and slots it or b) makes the run into the box as the opposition defence is pushed back by a counter-attack, leaving acres of space for the man on the by-line to cut it back for Ramsey and for him to tuck it away. With the signing of Alexis, the return to fitness of Walcott, and the likely upturn in Ozil's performance, these events should happen on a more frequent basis. Ozil, Rosicky, Giroud and Cazorla are capable of finding his runs while Alexis and Theo have the pace to burn defences and leave Ramsey with gifts. Importantly opposition defences will be preoccupied with the threat of Alexis and Walcott, allowing Ramsey even more space than usual. And don't forget, Ramsey is no mug at playing a final ball. With runners in behind the calibre Arsenal have, assists won't be a problem for him.

Finally, it is worth noting that in the case that teams play a very deep defensive line against Arsenal to nullify the threat of our wingers (I see this happening a fair few times) we will have to rely more on long range shots as well as intricate passing movements through the centre of the park - Ramsey will no doubt be integral in such instances.

And there you have it. Be afraid, be very afraid. 😉

      Ramsey's numbers are simply unsustainable:

unsustainable? lol they are that good because every time he shoots he is in dangerous positions, doesn't just take pot shots. just like they said yaya's is unsustainable

Mate, take off the fanboi glasses.

Even the most accurate players like Sturridge, who take the majority of their shots in the box, *only* hit the target about 40-45% of the time.

Midfielders like Ramsey, who take half their shots outside of the box simply cannot rival that level of accuracy over the length of an entire season.

This isn't too say he won't score a goal this year but, it's just very unlikely that he can repeat last year's of preformance.

Needless to say its around 50/50, but where were his goals scored from? Its fairly obvious that the majority of them would have come from inside the box as most players really.

In his defence Ramsey scores most of his goals inside the box making late runs in like Lampard used to. Often he finds himself in really dangerous areas to simply hit the target with power and its a goal.

              You're a member here...

Look at the data over the years!

No player has sustained a Shot on Target rate in excess of 50%...

So, unless Ramsey is going to out do the likes of RVP & Sturridge we can therefore assume that his offensive output will suffer.

No anecdotes about *dangerous areas* will change these trends.

I agree with you in part on the sustainability issue. However even if his odds were to drop to a sustainable 40% then he will still be a machine.

Also you need to take into consideration the yearly improvement of a young player. Ramsey is young and has the potential to be better than he was last year as a player. That might mean more frequency of shots? or whatever. I certainly expect him to improve as a player like most young players do.

He's already averaging a bit over 2 spg so I don't know how much more we can expect...

Again, this isn't to say that he won't have an "OK" season but, rather that we shouldn't expect such stunning results again.

Personally I wouldn't let last seasons stats get in the way of thinking he can't do it again. He is young and improving all the time. If he can get in more shots per game and continue as he left off last season nothings stopping him from doing just as well even with a drop off in his shot success rate.

Ryan, mate... you can't fight the math.

Thousand's of players have been analysed over many years & they just don't consistently hit the target more than half the time.

Second, the *top* midfielders in the EPL only manage to shoot 2.5 to 3 times per game as well.

I can't say anything else on the subject & if you choose to ignore this data; OK no hard feelings. 🙂

I'll leave you with a few articles I found very enlightening though...

As I said I agree he can't keep up those crazy stats. What I'm trying to say is that if he does hit 3 shots per game because he might just be/become a top midfielder, then scores at a top rate of 40% (statistically proven) then he will still be a machine.

The problem with Ramsey is that's he's only turned it on for one season and previous seasons to last year have produced 3.5 per game in 12/13 and 3.83 in 11/12 as opposed to last season's score of 7.5.

Don't get me wrong, he was an absolute gem last season, but I would advise caution to other FF'ers and wait a short while to see how he is going to fit into Arsene's idea of a team with has two other excellent attacking midfielders in Ozil and Sanchez, not forgetting the other choices Arsene has. And there's the rub. There are too many viable choices for Wenger to play each week to guarantee Ramsey a start, and this is why i'm not sure he is worth the 9.0m price

he is no one hit wonder - ramsey has always had great potential and last year he started to fulfil it...your argument is flawed because player development does happen, changing the player's ability and potential....if I was to believe your view I would say people like sterling, lallana, shaw etc have all had their first great season last year and so are therefore unlikely to do well this year? lol

also, he is the least likely to be rotated - heartbeat of the team 🙂
