Swansea boss Garry Monk continued to restructure his first-team squad last week with the acquisiton of winger Jefferson Montero from Mexican side Morelia. The 24-year-old rolls up to the Liberty on a four-year contract and is the sixth new face so far, following the arrival of Lukasz Fabianski, Bafetimbi Gomis, Marvin Emnes, Stephen Kingsley and Gylfi Sigurdsson.

In an interview with the club’s official website, Monk was quick to emphasise that the speedy Ecuadorian will add new weaponry to the Swans’ attack for the campaign ahead:

“We have watched Jefferson in depth and a lot of work went on behind the scenes to make the deal happen. He has a lot of quality and with the attributes he has he adds another dimension to our game. The ideal situation for me is that I have different types of players in the same position because in a game I may need to use a different approach. Jefferson certainly offers us something different, and I’m really happy he is here.”

The History

Montero progressed through the youth ranks at Emelec before making his senior debut in 2007. Two goals and 22 appearances later, he was on his way to Independiente in Ecuador’s Second Division and, after a brief loan stint with Dorados (five matches, one goal) he proceeded to net 19 times in 37 matches for his parent club.

Signed by Spanish outfit Villarreal as a 20-year-old, Montero spent his first year with the club’s B side, where 10 goals in 32 appearances led to his promotion to the senior squad in time for the 2010/11 campaign. His time in La Liga was far from successful, though. Farmed out on loan to Levante (11 appearances) and Real Betis (a goal and three assists from 33 matches), he subsequently turned out on 20 occasions for Villarreal, delivering a couple of goals and three assists, before he was sold to Morelia in June 2012.

Over a couple of seasons with the Mexican club, Montero’s output was fairly modest. The wide man chipped in with 14 goals and 12 assists in 65 appearances across all competitions before Monk made his move last week. On the international scene, Montero has already been capped 43 times by Ecuador and found the net on eight occasions.

The Prospects

The Ecuadorian’s arrival puts real question marks over the pitch time of Nathan Dyer and Wayne Routledge out wide, as Monk looks to put his own stamp on the Swansea first-team in his first full season at the helm.

Handed a permanent deal after steering the club to safety last term, the former centre-half introduced a slightly more direct approach than predecessor Michael Laudrup and resultantly saw his side notch 1.8 goals per game over his 14 league fixtures in charge, compared to 1.2 under the Dane’s guidance.

Whilst Montero’s blistering pace certainly fits in with Monk’s approach, the return of fellow midfielder Sigurdsson to the club should ensure the Ecuador international remains off Fantasy radars ahead of the season kick-off. As mentioned in the recent Sigurdsson Moving Target article, the playmaker averaged 5.7 FPL points per game during his first spell with the Welsh outfit and has immediately found his form – bagging a brace in his second debut, he’s also been handed dead-ball duties and, coming in at 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (the same price as Montero) has the potential to be a real bargain.

It should be noted that Montero has also impressed in pre-season, shining in the recent 2-0 win at Exeter, with Monk again underlining his pace as a key factor…

“I think Jefferson showed glimpses in that opening 45 minutes at Exeter of what he can do. He’s great…Pace always hurts teams. Anyone who’s quick and has got half a brain about them can cause people problems. Jefferson’s got very good pace and quality about him as well. And for a player who’s so young, he’s got experience as well. The World Cup’s been a great experience for him. If he can bring the momentum he’s got from that into the Premier League it’ll be great.”

Such comments suggest that Montero will immediately be central to Monk’s plans for the new campaign, cementing him as a differential ahead of a kind opening schedule for the Swans. Currently owned by just 0.3% of FPL managers, the winger welcomes Burnley, West Brom, Stoke and Newcastle to the Liberty in the first seven Gameweeks and also faces a trip to Sunderland during that period. While there is clear early promise, Montero will need to excel over a consistent period if he is to oust Sigurdsson as the major source of Fantasy points in Swansea’s midfield.

Any thoughts? Worried about doubling up on UTD's defence and Krul / Begovic seem to rotate well:

    Krul / Beg

    Shaw / Evan / Vert / Wisdom / Ward
    Fab / Eriksen / Snoddy / Sanchez / Shelvey
    Rooney / Dzeko / Austin

Not a fan of your defence. Ben davies & caulker much better & cheaper options than evans & vertongen imho. ( gets you 1.5m). Shaw could be great but i'm very skeptical about (a) how will utd adopt to a back 3 & (b) how will shaw adapt to utd & (c) how will shaw adapt to playing wing back... Which is a bitch of a role. I'd be looking at debuchy (bad fixs aside) or, if you must have utd coverage, jones/rafa (gets you another 0.5)

Then i'd use 1.5 to upgrade krul to courtois, and downgrade bego to a 4.0, still leaves you with +1.5m. Courtois = fire & forget GK who will probably be top scoring GK by end of season, barring injury - jose will sell cech soon.

In midfield, i think hazard is beyond essential, so would keep fabregas & upgrade eriksen to hazard - get the 0.5m from downgrading charlie austin... Realistically, i wouldn't be assuming he'll ever get near your starting 11, let alone score many points.

Lastly, snodgrass - hull have europa league, and robbie brady will probably push snoddy for both starts & set pieces. So i'd be looking at jordan henderson, or siggy at that same price. Both i think will be early season bandwagons.

All my opinion only (i'd also go for rambo instead of alexis but who knows how that will pan out!!)

Reckon Luis Filipe is good for the first few weeks, loking at the fixtures:

“Filipe Luis is experienced. Very stable, very reliable. He is a player who normally does not make mistakes.

“He is left-footed and likes to attack. We need that also, especially against teams who close a lot. We need that kind of creativity.

    Settled on this for now:

    Begovic (Myhill)
    Shaw Clyne O'Shea Colocinni Wisdom
    Hazard Mata Eriksen Snodgrass (Albrighton)
    Rooney Sturridge Remy

Realise I've no City or Arsenal to start but I'm thinking of bringing Ramsey/Silva and Dzeko/Giroud in when things ease up for both teams. Trying to play the fixtures this time because the 'coverage' thing didn't really work for me last season.

I know Sturridge's fixtures are tough but I think he's shown enough quality in the past to have a bit of faith in him. That combined with the fact that he doesn't seem the most popular option in the early RMTs I've seen... just tempting. But I'm open to switching.

Remy is dependent on whether he stays at QPR or not. I like his fixtures. If he moves, I'll consider Dzeko.

I realise my defence isn't the strongest. I'm torn between Shaw and Luis. Clyne is a bit of an outside bet based on the fact I think he'll have a better season this year with less competition. O'Shea, Col and Wisdom are my rotation trio, but any suggestions of better 4.5 defenders are welcomed.

    Cheers!

Lost on end of last page (hat tip to Billy Gilmore for responding there)

@Bubz and anyone else whom cares to know a little more about P Van Annholt:

29 games played last season for 4 goals and 3 assists.
The good: Averaged 1.8 shots, 85% passing accuracy
The not so good: averaged 52.5 passes per match, 0.3 crosses per game

I think 4.5 is pretty good value for a 1st choice LB who doesn't mind a shot. Hope this is useful to some. Cheers BC

This was before we updated the team model and as a result Southampton moved down. This is because the markets fancy them to perform significantly worse than they did last year presumably due to the sale of many of their good players. Before that change Pelle, Fonte and Tadic were essential. I built a team yesterday and got 324.45 for 6 gws.

You guys are reading into these line ups way too much. New guys and reserves tend to get more early pre-season games. Only the last one or two games will really help us determine a preferred XI imo.

    GK: Foster (Krul)
DEF: Jones, Debuchy, Wisdom (Ward, Vlaar)
MID: Mata, Ramsey, Hazard Eriksen (Siggy)
    FWD: Rooney, Dzeko, Fletcher

Going for midfield presence early on as I feel strike options are limited/not worth the outlay. Sturridge I'll consider in gameweek 4 along with others after their bad fixtures are over.

Lay it on me; be as brutal as you like, I appreciate honesty.

    Mannone (Myhill)

Mannone will have to play constantly as Myhill doesn't play, Targett also won't play as Bertrand will now. Apart from those two I think it looks good, would perhaps replace one of the 4.0M defenders with Wisdom who should play for West Brom? Hope this helps 🙂
