Dugout Discussion

The Dugout Discussion – Gameweek 1 – Monday

The final match of Gameweek 1 arrives this evening as promoted Burnley prepare for the visit of Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea. The Blues are heavily backed heading into this one, with both Eden Hazard and Cesc Fabregas currently sitting in more than 20% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) teams, while up front, summer signing Diego Costa will be looking to grab the goals and strengthen his armband credentials ahead of next week’s home encounter with Leicester:

Certainly, the stage is set for Costa to deliver after a disappointing series of displays from a number of forwards over the weekend, where only one (Saido Berahino) managed double-figure returns.

At the back, Jose Mourinho opts for Thibaut Courtois between the sticks, with Petr Cech relegated to the Blues’ bench. The Chelsea manager keeps faith with the familiar defence that earned 18 shut-outs last term, with new boy Filipe Luis amongst the substitutes.

So we learned that we should pick defenders without any point. Just close your eyes and just them. It's lottery.

I don't think those that scored high were on no one's radar, just not expected to score high this week. Lots have Vlaar, Chester & Clyne (me included) but they were benched in tough fixtures. Defenders are about the long term, not one off's.

Suppose given I only had Costa tonight it wasnt bad at all?

No cleanies, Hazard flop, Costa goal n baps, Schurrle probably in no ones side.

    Cant complain about that eh?

I didnt say he'd be injured but I did say he's over rated and not worth 10.0 so I'm claiming credit here. 😀

    Battle of the big boys:

    1) Chelsea defence:
Ivanovic with a solid start picking up a goal and unlucky not to get an assist. Meanwhile Luis looks shaky as an option as do Azpi and Ivan due to Champions League etc. and rotation. Cahill and Terry look nailed on and when fit I don't see Jose choosing Ivanovic over either, unless Terry needs a rest.
Ivanovic was also looking for the cross a lot and my god you don't want to see him running towards you... That's why I think Luis will struggle to find consistent, guaranteed game time.

    2) Fabregas vs Hazard:
Midfield master class from Cesc tonight as he supplied two goals with fine vision and quality. Hazard looks a little *off the pace is the wrong word* but he needs a week or two like Alexis. Perhaps he is carrying his end of season form into the new campaign but this is difficult to tell. Also with Fabregas on the ball more often and Costa an ever present option to supply up front perhaps Mourinho has had to change his plans for Hazard as he is less of the 'go to man'. At 9 million though Fabregas looks a bargain and looks the heart of Chelsea's midfield.

There are 2 key things we saw tonight from Cesc:
Fabregas is a free kick taker, despite Schurlle taking the free kick. If only costa got a penalty, we would be able to see if he took the penalty.

Secondly, it doesn't matter where he plays, he produces. Sure he may get less goals than Hazard but I have a feeling he will get more assists and be more consistent than Hazard with all those touches. He could be a HUGE FPL PROSPECT.

    3) Ramsey vs Alexis:
Despite not playing the best of games, the Welshman produced with a last gasp goal to finish off Palace. Alexis needs time to adapt to the Arsenal style and the premier league. As an Arsenal Player he will have to spend less time on the ball as at the moment he plays a fast, direct style suited to La Liga. The 1.5 million pound gap between the two pushes the pendulum firmly towards Ramsey who has reinvented himself as the key man in that Arsenal midfield.

Probably pretty Knee-jerky. Already made a switch for Siggy.

Is it worth replacing Hazard > Fabregas (-4) in the long run? Fabregas played a pretty adventurous and advanced role in Chelsea offense and took all the corners. The only real reason to pay extra for Hazard was set-pieces...

Congrats on a great opening week.

My transfer was also likely to be getting Bony in (for Giroud in my case). Looking at your team I think Jovetic is the one to deal with, definitely. All else looks good.

However, I can't say the same for myself.

I don't have Fabregas. And he looks even more essential than Sterling to me (who I also don't have).

Would you advise Mata -> Fabregas? Feels a bit knee jerk, and if I already had one of Sterling or Fab, I probably would stick to the Bony plan.

Current midfield is: Mata, Siggy, Eriksen, Ramsey (Wanyama).
