Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 7 – Sunday

Diego Costa and Eden Hazard steer Chelsea to victory over Arsenal. Angel di Maria grabs a goal and assist as United edge past Everton, Christian Eriksen fires Spurs to victory over the Saints, whilst Diafra Sakho and Stewart Downing are in the points again as the Hammers brush aside QPR.

Hazard On the Spot
Diego Costa continued his relentless scoring exploits at the Bridge by taking his tally to nine for the season in the 2-0 win over Arsenal, though the Spain international was – for once – overshadowed by Eden Hazard. A converted spot-kick laid the argument to rest over who is the Blues’ number one penalty-taker this term and helped the Belgian move onto 39 points – just two behind Cesc Fabregas. With an ownership of 13% compared to the Spaniard’s 51%, Hazard is developing into a deadly differential.

Blues Resilience Improving
Meanwhile, in defence, Chelsea delivered back-to-back clean sheets for the first time this term, with yesterday’s tally of just five shots over the 90 minutes suggesting that Jose Mourinho is tightening things up a bit. Those thinking of moving on Branislav Ivanovic for Leighton Baines due to the Blues’ tricky schedule (cpl, mun, QPR, liv) may now have second thoughts as Mourinho’s side start to rack up the defensive returns once again, though for those unwilling to shell out on the pricey Serbian, Cesar Azpilicueta is currently looking great value for his 6.0 price tag.

Sanchez Fails to Spark Gunners
After being utilised as a sub in the previous two league matches, Alexis Sanchez returned to the first XI yesterday afternoon. The Chilean was unable to help Arsene Wenger’s men breach the Blues’ rearguard but his installation in the XI at least suggests he’s back in the frame ahead of a very kind run of fixtures. The Gunners face just two of last season’s top eight in the next nine Gameweeks now and, in spite of yesterday’s loss, the likes of Sanchez and Danny Welbeck will be firmly on Fantasy radars as Wenger’s side look to the schedule to re-ignite their faltering title tilt.

Eriksen Sees Off Southampton
Cristian Eriksen rocketed back on to the radar yesterday as his second goal of the season earned Spurs a 1-0 victory over Southampton. Having found the net in two of his last four league appearances, the Dane is certainly starting to deliver as a result of a move to a central role behind Emmanuel Adebayor and, down to just 7.8 in FPL with a 7% ownership, is another differential starting to appear on our radars again. It’s hard to look beyond Nacer Chadli in Spurs’ midfield ranks, though; the latter moved up to fifth overall in the FPL standings after serving up an assist, yet in spite of a very kind 6.3 price tag, is still owned by a mere 10% of managers.

Saints Stumble at the Lane
Ronald Koeman’s men rolled up to Spurs on the back of a six-match winning streak in all competitions but were unable to breach their hosts’ backline. Graziano Pelle managed only one attempt on goal, whilst Dusan Tadic created a total of just one chance as the away side failed to click into gear. The good news for the Saints is that they now have five excellent fixtures to bounce back from the defeat (SUN, STO, hul, LEI, avl) and our faith in the likes of Tadic, Pelle and Sadio Mane, as well as their plethora of defensive talent, still remains strong for now.

Di Maria Delivers Yet Again
Angel Di Maria produced a goal and assist for the third time in four Gameweeks as United climbed into fourth spot. Snapped up by over 163,000 FPL managers last week, the Argentine now sits in 35% of sides but is set for significant investment over the international fortnight after averaging over eight points per appearance for Louis van Gaal’s side. Radamel Falcao finally found the net for the first time since arriving at Old Trafford but with Chelsea, City and Arsenal in the next five, few will be willing to load up on United options – with Di Maria’s exploits earning him plenty of interest, the Colombian is likely to remain off the radar for now.

Tough Times for the Toffees
Despite missing a penalty in the Premier League for the first time in his career, Leighton Baines comforted his 17.6% ownership by contributing the assist for Steven Naismith’s headed strike against United. The left-back continues to look the one Toffees player worthy of investment right now, though Naismith’s first goal in four could signal a return to the form shown in the first few weeks of the season. Sitting in 17th in the table, Everton’s form is undeniably poor, but their upcoming fixtures (AVL, bur, SWA, sun, WHM) should help them improve their position and also regain our Fantasy faith in their assets.

Sakho and Downing in Fine Form
Diafra Sakho scored for the fifth consecutive match in all competitions as the Hammers saw off QPR 2-0 to further cement his credentials as one of the best budget forward options around. Stewart Downing was also in the points once again with an assist and two bonus points, despite being shifted into central midfield to accommodate Mauro Zarate (making his first start since Gameweek 4). Sam Allardyce’s outfit secured their first clean sheet of the season against the Rs, and with decent fixtures to follow (bur, MCI, sto, AVL), the West Londoners are currently encouraging investment in all areas of the pitch.

    Krul
    Clyne / Naylor / PVA
    Fab / Sterling / ADM / Silva

    1 FT & 3.9m itb

    Krul
    Terry Baines Clyne
    Sterling Siggy Tadic Adm
    Costa Welbeck Vardy

    Elliott Eriksen Duff Caulker
    1.8 in the bank
    1 FT

    Thinking of either
    A) Save transfer
    B) Vardy to Sakho
    C) Caulker downgrade to Hutton/Wisdom since i'm sick of seeing his name in my team

Eriksen has convinced me to keep him for a few more weeks atleast. Good fixtures and can be the placeholder for Wally for when he returns and does a full 90 😎

Not in GW8, surely? Sterling (qpr), Chadli (mci)

But afterwards, perhaps. I'm getting less and less impressed by Sterling as the weeks go on. Then again, Studge being back could help him.

        Yeah, i think you're right.

Once that game is out of the way, Chadli looks a really big player and I am a bit bored of young Raheem in my team.

        Hmm, nice spin on it.

I just think Chadli is the Rambo of this year. We are so tainted in our view of him because prior performance but under Poch he is in the box and taking shots all the time.

Is anyone else trying to avoid the Di Maria train or is he now essential?

There is no way for me to get him in without absolutely butchering my defence (seems a bad time to sell a Chelsea or Soton defender) or selling someone I want to keep long term.

The thing is, his stats are still nothing amazing. Nowhere near a Bale or someone similar from previous seasons. Looking at his fixtures, 10m seems a lot for someone who is going to need to keep producing magic against some tough teams.

Or am I just attempting to justify the mistake which ruins my season?

His upcoming fixtures are a bit pants. Chelsea, Man City & Arsenal over the next 5 GWs so you could probably ride along without him for a while.

That being said, he's already got 3 10+ scores so it's not wrong to have him in your squad...

    4. Barry Woj
      • 11 Years

Well this upcoming run of fixtures will prove the train right or wrong. My gut feeling is that he's a season keeper. Utd have been misfiring, but I think they will continue to improve as LVG teams usually do. Di Maria will be central to that and he has the bonus of no Europe and so no rotation.

If you've watched him play for the past 5 GWs, you'll want him in your team. Over any other player (Sterling, Hazard, Fabregas included).

        Exactly this!

I avoided Yaya for the entirety of last season and it really hurt me.

You can justify bringing others in but there is no way to justify leaving him out.

He showed great form coming in at 9.5m before he stuck a United shirt on and those that picked him have been rewarded.

Like the people who avoided the Costa train a while back (I was one of them and I regret it), you might find out it's a really bad move. Fixtures or not, don't take such a particularly bad gamble especially considering almost everyone else has him

Who else very tempted by Sakho? though Valencia would be the main man at 7 million but Sakho seems to have stolen that tag @5.5! just compared him and Pelle for the past 4 weeks and apart from chances created he is holding his own(though chances created is a bit of a worry). Any west ham fans around? when carroll is back(whenever that happens)/a formation change occurs will Sakho continue being the main man?

Bit late to the party but I only just got good internet access again and want to bring up the Scoutcast. I think it could do with a bit of a revamp. No offence to Mark, Granville and co but I think it's getting a bit repetitive and I found myself drifting in and out of it a lot recently. They seem to spend a lot of time in their own little worlds, which is endearing in a way, but at the same time, not why I tune in.

Things like the Fantasy heavy hitters and risks. I like the idea, but does anyone really care about the little competition they have going between themselves? bar Mark and Granville? I think it may be better if they discussed whos a good option for a heavy hitter/ punt/ differential this week rather than muse over players for a pointless competition between themselves. (Or maybe I've missed something here and this is a bigger competition that I am unaware of. If so, apologies for my rant) It just seems ye spend a lot of time talking about who's beating who in what.

Also, I think the best part of the podcasts last year were the guests. Adding a different view or an extra dimension to the panel was great to listen to. I really liked the community questions too. I wish ye could bring them back, even to direct them at Mark or Granville and not just the guests. They often brought to the table what we here really wanted to hear your opinions on (or what flavour crisps you prefer 😉 )

Finally, don't get me wrong, I love the scoutcast and look forward to it every week and I know ye are busy and have other things to do with your time. Just a suggestion. Feel free to file this under W, for 'Winging Badgers' if you wish 😆

Yes, I liked the guest appearances. Jonty and The Prof were both very good.

Sometimes it can seem a little repetitive but that's only natural due to the nature of FPL. Transfer options/ RMTs on here are repetitive too but it's the nature of the beast, I suppose.

Yeah I realise certain things have to be talked over again and again every week and some weeks there mightnt be anything to talk about at all 😀 Just think they could add a bit of spice to it at times

😆 That heavy hitter thing is so true. The boys keeping their own little scores. Half the time it's just Mark who cares. I would say Granville rarely knows the gap. Who actually cares about that?!

😆 It kind of hit me when I was stuck in a hotel lobby bored and glad I had the scoutcast to tune in to. Then I began to think 'What the hell am I actually listening to?' lol

I think the competition is there so they can discuss the heavy hitter and punt options? It would be nice to see the results tabulated or something alongside the podcast link, though. You're definitely right about the guests though. The reason the podcast is good is that you usually get a good insight what the experts at the game think about the current status of FPL. The more experts the better!

Two things will make it better

      1) community questions
      2) guests, even if it's every now and then and just the audio. It seemed like the video was a bit of a hassle.

It did seem like a lot of hassle for them alright and unnecessary unkess they were to bring up pictures of tables or stats or something

I agree that at some point it would be good to reintroduce the guests - the likes of Jonty/Prof/AB and/or even a different member of the community each week, perhaps the Scout Picks champion?

I don't personally feel the mini-competitions between Mark and Granville detract from the overall podcast though - I like the needle as one or the other has a little gloat about a small victory.

All personal taste though, obviously 🙂

Yeah the needling is always fun. Maybe they should make it more worthwhile or something by having a page for these competitions somewhere on the site or something. As it stands now I have no clue whos winning Fantasy risk or any of the others. Page could also include mark and Granvilles various ranks in FPL UFPL etc

I listen to the Scoutcast for entertainment, not for information and advice. There's plenty of all that in FFS's many Articles, Hot Topics, and tables. What Mark and Granville bring that's different is their personal experience of playing the fantasy game, week after week the way we all do, and with a competitive edge, as some of us do in the mini-leagues.

The Scoutcast, like some Premier League sides I could name, hasn't kept its shape; the different segments complete with sound effects ("All aboard!", Fantasy Island) now run together, and that's a pity. And guest talking heads are certainly good to have - I don't think video adds much if anything. But if the Soutcast continues unchanged as it has begun this season, I'll still listen to every episode for what it has to offer, and enjoy it.

Im not suggesting they stop talking about their personal experiences. I agree thats great and a lot of the info has already been started in the articles. Just think they could streamline the show a bit better. Maybe even add more time to discuss their personal opinion on things

Good post, I do love the heavy hitters and risk though. Some friends and I have a little tornament using the concept.
What I could really do without is Granville's weekly physical ailment at the start of every one. The last one excluded it's about 10 in a row.

Lol That segment is getting a bit stale and repetitive alright. Soon to be replaced with a new segment Granvilles G.P. debt 😆 Yeah Heavy Hitters would be a lot better if there was more to it than just Mark and Granville. They mainly seem to talk about their points is the problem rather than the options and why they chose them, though I suppose their picks are mostly self-explanatory. Thats why I think a segment discussing punts or heavy hitters would be better and more inclusive of the wider audience.

How are you doing on your heavy hitter comp btw?

I like the banter between Mark and Granville when it comes to how their teams went and who's beating who. However I do think the heavy hitters and risks are a bit dry and probably should be dropped. In general I'm not too much of a fan when it comes to short term picks for the upcoming game week. I'd like them to discuss more longer term picks, perhaps options that are being widely discussed on the forum instead.

Yeah the banter is great, esp when one has a bad week or does something they were warned against. The heavy hitter stuff is maybe just too centred on them and not the public. Discussing long term options too should maybe be an option alright. Maybe the Fantasy Island thing should be changed to Desert Island - imagine you'll be out at sea and unable to change your team. How would you set up your team for the next 5 gameweeks? 😆

I have to say, I disagree here.

I think the Scoutcast is pretty perfect in its current form. The Heavy Hitters/Risks is always fun, and brings out a bit of banter.

I have the opinion that the special guests took something away from the Scoutcast. It is good to hear different opinions, but the best Scoutcasts to me, are the ones just like they are being made at the moment.

And I look forward to it every week. Hearing about Mark/Granville's latest struggle always has a certain comedy value!

      Keep it going guys!

Disagree away mate 😆 I too love hearing about the struggles but it's the relate-able ones that count. Grannys miffs are always gold too. Perhaps I didnt word it too well above. I love them chatting about their teams and stuff, but when it comes down to discussing their own imaginary competitions is where it starts to lag. That or spending 10 mins talking about Mark's lost cat 😆

Everyones not going to find everything important for them alright. It can get a bit monotonous at times though and they drift in and out of things. I'd like to see more discussions on players alright as opposed to the competition style hitters/risks. Why can't they just discuss good options for punts/ big guns each week rather than it being about beating one another in a competition no one else cares about?

I like the competitions they have between the two, but i must admit I also find myself drifting in and out. A guest appearance or something would spruce it up again.

I also definitely agree that if the two are going to talk about their own competitions at this just length, there should be a part on this site which features their ranks, big hitters, differentials etc. for each week. It's annoying how hard it is to track down the Mods league (although I have it bookmarked now), but a link to it should be made available on the site for people to have a look at

I guess they dont want anyone trying to join in unannounced. I think they had a randomer last year and didnt have a clue who he was lol But if the link was put up after the deadline, I dont see any real problem. You also see a lot of people asking for Marks FPL ID in the threads to check out his team.

Really enjoy listening to it, this is the first year I've done it on a regular basis.

One thing that I do think could go though is the round-up of the various leagues....It's just a few minutes of giving random names with their scores that doesn't really add anything to the podcast!

      Late arrival 🙂

I'd like much more chat about strategies for the next few weeks. Rather than just this week's transfer, what are they aiming towards & what are the options they are considering for the next 4-6 weeks?

As for something to get rid of, the Scoutcast Team. It's boring, it has no meaning for us, we don't play the game in this way. I don't care for how a self handicapped team is failing to do much.

      1. BeachBadger
        • 10 Years

Yeah I agree. It would be nice to see what they think of things going forward. As for the Scoutcast team, it's nice to see different ideas put into practise, but yeah maybe they dont need to discuss their transfers so much. Maybe it'd be better if they all just had an individual team with different handicaps and see which one was faring the best.

          • 12 Years

On the Scoutcast team I just find it an odd idea. We're all playing this game to do as well as possible and playing with a full deck of cards. The Scoutcast team plays with some kind of handicap and naturally doesn't do that well. None of us play like that, so I don't see how it is interesting as a concept in a show/website that's about doing as well as we can.

True. I was thinking something more along the lines of one team plays with a strong defence, another in a 3-5-2, etc. That way we can actually see how different real strategies fair

              • 12 Years

That is an excellent idea. We're forever debating different approaches, but perhaps less prepared to experiment on our own teams. I'd love to see how that type of different strategy could work out.

Downgrade two heavy hitting midfielders. I can still have adm fab/sterlin siggy chadlii with aguero costa welbeck up front and baines and bertand in defence. That's what I'm aiming for I think. Currently have far too much locked up in my midfielders.
