FFS UEFA Hockey World Cup 2014 – Semi-Final Week

Here’s our regular update on the competition, featuring a look at the Matchday 5 games that took place over Gameweek 9. We also have some fun handing out some Matchday Awards and a look ahead to the semi-finals this weekend. Please use this article for all tournament chat.

MATCHDAY 5 RESULTS

The final Matchday 5 results have been updated in the Cup spreadsheet and we can reveal that after a hard-fought group stage, England and Spain qualify from Group A, while Argentina and New Zealand qualify from Group B.

Remarkable scenes in Group B as New Zealand qualify over Netherlands by a goal difference of JUST ONE POINT. Rumors have it that ironic yellow cards to fellow Dutchmen Krul for time wasting and Van Persie for his celebration, both in injury time, cost Netherlands a spot in the knockout stages. It doesn’t get closer than that.

MATCHDAY 5 AWARDS

Louis van Gaal Award for the best attack – Netherlands with 522 goals

A Rainy Night at Britannia award for the best defence – England once again, conceding just 427 goals

Salma Hayek Overnight Award for the player of the week – McNulty (Germany) with 64 goals

SAF Management Award – Ellipsis with 98% manager rating

Jose Mourinho Award for the best press conference of the week – For the very first time, a non-manager makes a debut here only to oust the unbeaten Ellipsis. Deservedly it goes to Captain Thomass from Korea.

Hot Urine Treatment for the highest point scorer on the bench – Nice to Finally Michu (England) with 62 goals

Dalglish Differential for the worst team selection – Parmtree/Nate (Malaysia) with a 89% rating

Pep Guardiola Award for the highest goals scored during group stages – Netherlands with 3196 goals…..yet they’re disqualified (Really really tough luck guys)

Derby County Memorial Award for the worst attacking force during group stages – South Korea with 2870 goals

Tony Pulis Award for the best defence in the group stages – Argentina with 2913 goals conceded

David Luiz Geezership for the worst defence in the group stages – South Africa with 3155 goals conceded

SEMI-FINALS PREVIEW:

With the semi-finals about to be played in Gameweek 10, here are the fixtures:

England vs New Zealand

Argentina vs Spain

LINE-UP SUBMISSION

All managers are requested to email me their four substitutes and their Fantasy Premier League IDs before the deadline of Friday, 31 Oct, 2359 BST. In case he or she fails to do so, the autosubs will be the last four players on the Squads Page.

It would be amusing to see the scores of the knocked out teams. Pretty sure there will be some teams with far higher scores Spain this week.

NZ with 5 members in the top 5k is a warning to future managers. Evolve or be left behind. I expect a very different recruitment period in the next tournament.

        Good point well made Innsie.

I was inside the top 500 in GW3....sadly I haven't clung on to that.
Anyway it wasn't rank that got me in - when I got a slot with the Sheikhs last year, Ellipsis turned out to be from the same home-town area (we even met up for a pint mid-season) and he got me onboard again.

The banter has been great and the team spirit amongst the Gauchos has been superb with everyone helping each other out....

That's what it's been about for me. Becoming part of a team, a bit of friendly competition, and having fun talking footy & FPL.

        These competitions have been cracking.
        Many thanks to ENR.

          Completely agree.

This is the second FFS UEFA competition I've taken part and captained in and I love them.

Team spirit is key, us Kiwis all help each other out too and that usually results in us rising in rank as well as having more fun. The banter is top notch too... ENR really does a fantastic job,

Think having never been a part of one of these tournaments and given the fact everyone had a vote of confidence in me being captain then I'm pretty damn proud of reaching the final and topping the group stages, have to give special praise also to my wingman Sunny who has been so helpful throughout, and to Austin for the brilliant pressers, and as I said to everyone who put their faith in me.

I agree with this. Many of our team aren't particularly "well known" on these boards and within the community. We have many tournament "rookies", a rookie manager, Captain and VC. We had a thorough scouting process that the whole team assisted with as they were added one by one into the fold. We looked at applications that came in by email and Twitter. We didn't Rush the process taking it right to the wire on deadline day. When ENR invited me to manage a team I was concerned I wouldn't have time with my crazy working patterns so from day one my philosophy was for everyone to be involved as much as they could. We had a fully democratic vote for Captain and vice captain and our "Junta management system ™" goes beyond myself and our very own incredible "SAS" Spectrum and Sunny, the whole team pitches in and works together behind the scenes. I think the way we have worked together collectively and helped eachother has definitely contributed to our success and the rising ranks in the team.

Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen, sports fans and Espagna,

Well where to begin?...well given that she's been warming her vocal chords for well over 24 hours it's time for the fat lady to finally sing!:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PnNk4zpsqew

Like Big Susan we dreamed a dream and we're almost there. We had a 4 point head start and never lost the lead, unlucky Spain, we had your number this week and despite you having more ADM and Aguero we were pretty sure we had you covered. Well done to the Junta, Spectrum and Sunny once more we salute your efforts for your country!

Technically we feel having beaten NZ already we should just be crowned now but if we have to go and do it all again so be it... We're enjoying this!

Commiserations to Spain and England. We'll try and beat NZ for all of you who have taken us Gauchomania into your hearts!

We will see you all in 2 weeks after the "break" but believe us we won't be resting... The Great Gauchos of 2014 really want this, hopefully our dream will come true!

    Well done Gauchos....Vamos!!!!!!!

      Roll on the big one......

Land of the long white flag, or something isn't it ?!
You keep your waddling Kiwis - we've got our very own PARROT.
Let's hope he's flying high for the final - juts like their flag of surrender 🙂

I'm with you, gaffer. If we lose in two weeks, we could always claim to be joint champs, haha !

After they've stuffed Wales at rugby so many times....I can't wait to have a go at them on the hockey pitch.

Actually - now I remember, last week, my son was being coached by an NZ hockey international....Andrew Hayward.
My son said he was amazing....but it's not FFS UEFA-hockey is it ?
Apparently he is a "drag-flicking specialist". Sounds a bit sordid to me.....
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pulnLQNo_nM

I reckon we've got nothing to fear, Gauchos....a good whack on the shins is all they need 😉

Congratulations Ellipsis and to the team of fine Gauchos

Looking at the line-ups before the final we needed a high scoring Manchester derby and in particular for Aguero to outscore Sanchez to get through. Clearly it wasn't to be 🙁 and you're worthy finalists - bring home the trophy.

Coming from a nation famous for bottling it in the big games (up to 2008 anyway) we were keen to launch an investigation into where it went wrong. We could blame ourselves - but we have to point some of the blame at Michael Oliver and his failure to spot any number of penalties our man Aguero could have slotted away. Initial investigations included blood tests that showed an unexplained amount of corned beef in his bloodstream leaving the more suspicious amongst us to suspect foul play. He was interviewed and although he denied a fetish for corned beef he did admit his vision may have been impaired by large numbers of bog rolls being thrown from one corner of the ground where sombreros and ponchos seemed to be the clothing of choice. Not common in Manchester 😆

Thanks again to ENR and the team for organising a great game - it was great fun and I certainly learnt from my teammates. Up from 90k to 3k during the tournament was partly due to getting input from the amigos.

      Good luck Gauchos

    "Corned Beefgate"

Ladies and Gentlemem, sports fans...Team Argentina would like to make the following announcement following allegations of match fixing:

We deny all allegations of match fixing Vs Spain! The evidence seized from Referee Michael Oliver's dressing room being examined by police clearly is an attempt by our jealous neighbours to set us up!

    http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/OTYwWDEyODA=/$(KGrHqF,!k8E6Bp3oG4EBOmHK2(Pog~~60_35.JPG

Rumours are now circulating that we paid off the Dutch!

    http://media-cache-ec0.pinimg.com/736x/10/51/89/105189f4326259e584f2033e8ef6ed03.jpg

In defence we have discovered that after a heavy smoking session they prefer other stuff!

    http://afrozonomist.files.wordpress.com/2014/06/o-canned-unicorn-meat-facebook.jpg

Those saying we gave the England camp food poisoning prior to their semi final clash are unfounded and we have no dealings with the French!

    http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2013/02/17/article-0-17A106E3000005DC-672_634x398.jpg

We have heard that in the New Zealand camp they are turning to a new Diet in a hope to match us in the final!

    http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2013/02/17/article-0-17A106E3000005DC-672_634x398.jpg

The Koreans have no interest in canned beef...

    http://i01.i.aliimg.com/wsphoto/v0/1073954601/Dog-snacks-canned-dog-food-font-b-low-b-font-font-b-fat-b-font-cup.jpg

To further our defence comes the news that "South Africa has no interest in receiving beef from Argentina in any shape or form, it's too dry!" That's very rich coming from South African spokes person Bill Tong.

We admit to offering the Germans a pallet of corned beef as a "good will gesture"/"gift" but they declined...and beat us!

We remain innocent until proven guilty. We won't be taking any more questions on this issue and we wish to now turn our efforts and attentions to the final.

Thank you ladies and Gentlemen, that is all!
