Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 15 – Sunday

Andy Carroll bags a brace and assist as West Ham defeat Swansea. Diafra Sakho returns from injury to notch again, Wilfried Bony nets his seventh in nine appearances, whilst Villa’s unbeaten run stretches to five thanks to goals from defensive duo Ciaran Clark and Alan Hutton.

Carroll Breaks His Duck

Partnered by Enner Valencia up front as Sam Allardyce returned to a midfield diamond, the big target man opened his account for the campaign in emphatic fashion. Carroll was simply unplayable against the Swans and bagged two goals and an assist in the 3-1 win as Allardyce’s side triumphed for the third successive Gameweek, though with Enner Valencia and Diafra Sakho also in the mix after recent injuries, the Hammers boss has considerable strength in depth to deal with the festive schedule. On this form, though, it’s difficult to see him being dislodged.

Fit-Again Sakho Back in the Goals

The Senegal striker was handed a bench role against Garry Monk’s side but, having replaced Valencia at the break in his first appearance since Gameweek 11, was amongst the goals yet again. Impressively, Sakho has now scored in seven of his eight Premier League starts, and at time when Sergio Aguero is a major doubt and Charlie Austin is suspended for the weekend, the 5.7-priced Hammers forward has to come back into the reckoning as he prepares to face Sunderland, Leicester and West Brom in the next five Gameweeks. Whilst rest and rotation may still blight his pitch time, yesterday’s display underlined his ability to deliver with limited minutes.

Another Assist for Downing

The Hammers midfielder emerged victorious in yesterday’s battle of the playmakers. Whilst Gylfi Sigurdsson blanked for the sixth successive road trip, Downing grabbed his sixth assist of the season to help the Hammers come from behind to clinch the points, and with the fixtures still favourable, a price of 6.1 continues to look outstanding value. Downing has now racked up a goal and three assists in his last five appearances and sits fifth in the midfield standings.

Bony Strikes Again

After stumbling at home to QPR in midweek, the Swansea frontman grabbed his seventh goal in nine Gameweeks at Upton Park yesterday. Owned by just 9% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers, Bony’s excellent form brings him onto our radars as a possible short-term replacement for Aguero before he departs for international duties in next month’s African Cup of Nations. Priced at just 8.4 in FPL, he now faces Spurs, Hull, Villa, Liverpool and QPR in the next five, and whilst his lack of explosive potential (one double-figure haul this season) limits his potential as a captaincy contender, he looks one of the most reliable forwards around right now.

Villa Defenders in the Points

Paul Lambert’s side are now unbeaten in five after coming from behind to get the better of Leicester yesterday afternoon. Christian Benteke went into this one highly fancied, and whilst the Belgian managed an assist in the 2-1 triumph, it was Ciaran Clark and Alan Hutton who proved the unlikely goal heroes for Paul Lambert’s side.

Despite the loss of Ron Vlaar, Philippe Senderos and Nathan Baker in recent matches, Villa have now conceded just three goals in the last five Gameweeks ahead of back-to-back clashes against Man United and Swansea. With Sunderland, Palace and Leicester in the following three, though, further returns could be on the cards before the festive period is out.

Ulloa Worry for Deflated Foxes

The Argentine rolled up to Villa Park in decent Fantasy form, after serving up an assist in each of his previous two appearances. Ulloa was in the points once again for the visitors after scoring his first goal since the Gameweek 5 win over United but a first-half knock meant he was replaced at the break by David Nugent. Yesterday’s defeat means Nigel Pearson’s side have taken just two points in 10 league matches since that famous victory over the Red Devils, and with doubts over their top scorer’s availability, the Foxes could be set for further misery as they square up to City, West Ham and Tottenham next.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Is it time to ditch the top priced defenders?

Baines and Ivanovic have proved poor investments for their hefty price tags in recent Gameweeks.

Ivanovic is still getting clean sheets, but so too are his other Chelsea defenders, all of which are scoring better and significantly are cheaper.

Over the last four Gamweek’s Ivanovic is the 14th best defender in terms of goal attempts in the last four. Also 14th in terms of crosses. 8th best in terms of chances created. That is not the rank of a 7m plus defender.

Plus Ivanovic has 19 FPL pts in the last four, compared to Azpilicueta’s 27. In addition Ivan has 80 BPS over that period, with Azpil getting 103.

With Baines, he has managed just 4 pts over that period – Note this is just three Gameweeks as he was injured for one of them.

In terms of BPS over those three games he has 48, while the significantly cheaper Jagielka has 54. Plus Baines's crossing and distribution is on the slide, something I put down to the greater playing time of creative midfielders such as Mirallas. Over the last four Gameweeks Jenkinson has more than doubled Baines’s crossing output. Baines has taken just four corners in the last four Gameweeks – Mirallas has taken 7 in contrast.

Is it time to ditch them and use their cash for premium midfielders?

Or with Aguero’s injury is freeing up money no longer a problem? Are managers able to afford the luxury of carrying Baines and Ivan through their current slump and use transfers elsewhere?

With all these injuries and suspensions, it should be considered a luxury to spend transfers on transferring out solid defenders like Ivanovic and Baines.

Nailed on for their respective teams in the festive period, sure to get points, no reason to get rid imo.

Reassess when you activate the January WC. Imo Azpi offers much better value than Ivanovic and that switch should be considered then.

Difficult to ditch anyone this week who isn't suspended/Aguero. I want to keep Baines for the season anyway, hopefully just a dry spell... Ivanovic I'd get rid of especially when Azpi is cheaper and eats BAPS.

With Aguero out long-term, there's certainly enough room to have at least one of them.

I'm keeping my Baines all through Xmas until at least GW21.

I think there's a case to stick with Baines, as he's on pens, FKs and corners. You never know when he could deliver a goal or assist. Given his style of play, he will likely give him bonus points too.

Can't say the same for Ivanovic.

Baines over Ivanovic any day. Having said that, I got rid of Baines in GW13 for Hutton 😎

This really is the worst possible week to ask this question. Both could score double figures. And Ivan very nearly scored and got an assist this week.

Next week, I will look at selling one to fund Yaya, but it's really not worth thinking about until then.

It's always worth thinking ahead. Plans change, but its important to consider a range of options. I asked it because Aguero's injury means big changes to our squads and for those looking to bulk up on premium midfielders further money may be needed in a week or two and Baines/Ivan look like a great way of freeing up 1m or so, while at the same time ensuring their spot is taken by a high scoring defender.

Fair enough. Ivan I can see given the fixtures, but Baines has had City and Spurs away and a blank against Hull - nothing has changed from the things that got him double figure hauls and 'essential' billing.

Except Mirallas and other Everton mids are now hogging set pieces (except penalties) and crossing. All the evidence suggest Mirallas does effect Baines's ability to score and rack up bonus, whether the opposition is weak or good.

i just disagree with the premise

december through the 2nd half of the season is when the premium defenders begin to truly outshine their peers

this is the time to rotate into them

With respect, the time to ditch these players has well and truly passed. I booted Baines as soon as I found out he was injured and bought Azpi.

Whereas Baines has a reliable attacking output, Ivan does not so I've not quite understand why some are obsessed with him.

As a Scout once said, "Always look for the cheapest way into a defence."

These aren't players you judge over the last four Jonty, please don't get daily mail on us and twist stats to make an article.
They are players in good defences that will match those around them but every so often get attacking returns which is what sets them apart. Clearly this won't happen every other game otherwise they'd be 10 mil a piece.

That said I think man city defenders are looking quite good for the festive season. If they don't suffer rotation i think they'll be tight for the fast flow of games.

    The appeal of Edin Dzeko.

Is it real at the moment?

He was brilliant last year when required and he will be called upon again in City's tine of need.

The only two spanners in the works I can see are Jovetic taking away some of his game-time and Pellegrini saying that he was only fit enough for 30 minutes which is why he brought on Pozo.

Maybe it's best to wait a week/two weeks before getting him?

I've got 2FT, so assuming no issues pop up this week how does this look?

Aguero & Austin OUT ------> Costa & Dzeko IN

It is something I am considering.......but City's fixtures are sooo good.

I might lose Lukaku back to Austin the week after.

UCL questions - which big teams will put out strong teams this round, i.e. still to qualify or can come top?

And which English teams will put out weakened sides - Chelsea & Arsenal right?

City & Liverpool to play full strength?

    60,035 already transferred Kun out.

Am I right in thinking we get an update about his injury tomorrow?

Was supposed to be today but realistically the best news possible would probably still be 2-3 weeks of recovery for the injury (plus probably another week of building up fitness and being on the bench). Sell him tonight after the game.

        Hmm...

I might have to. Hopefully we have an idea how long he's out for. Don't want to get in Dzeko only to have him get injured and unfit to start over the weekend.

    Moved from another thread:

Biggest transfers in at the moment, in order:

    1) Costa
    2) Hazard
    3) Cisse
    4) Yaya
    5) Downing
    6) Sanchez
    7) Sakho
    8) Bony
    9) Rooney
    10) Bojan

I have Costa, Hazard, Downing, Sanchez... are any of the others must buys?

Before transfers, my team next week will be a 4-5-1

    Forster
    Clyne Wisdom Dummett Ivanovic
    Hazard Downing Siggy Sanchez Boyd
    Costa

    Bench: Myhill Bruce Aguero Austin

1 FT - what should I do? Am thinking of leaving the Aguero transfer til next week and doing Clyne > Clichy.

    Thoughts?

    Krul (injured) - Schmeichel

    Hutton - Reid - Wisdom - ( Alderweireld (doubt) - Chambers (Suspended)

    Hazard - Cazorla - Siggy - Fabregas(suspended) - McCarthy (doubt)

Welbeck - Costa - Aguero( on a bike)

    0,2 ITB - 2 free transfers

Boyd & Aguero > Yaya & Sakho is tempting, but after this week it will cause such a pain in terms of who to bench!

why would it be a pain in terms of who to bench? arent it is nice to have more options rather than sticking with the 11 players every week?

It is, but I would probably bench a lot of points every week.

i never see benched points as a problem at all..i would not want my bench to be getting all 2pts when i need them.

If you have the template, you will comfortably be able to bench one of Sakho, Austin, Downing or Siggy every week.

It would give me that, with Ings instead of Austin - just doesn't feel right benching a striker, unless they play the top teams.

    Two burning questions :

    1) Will Yaya really be worth it over Christmas?

    2) How much of Azpi playing time will Luis steal?

    1. @ImpressiveTackl
      • 13 Years

      1) Perhaps

      2) 1 game.

    2. money face bandwagon

      1) no one knows..i wish i know if he will continue his form..all i can say is that he is worth a try

      2) again azpi is the current 1st choice..but there is no way to tell if luis will take over some games especially during christmas period

      1. Pompel
        • 10 Years

At least Yaya will be easy to downgrade - and there are good budget options in attack to afford him, like Sakho, Carroll, Bony

        2) If only one game, certainly hold Azpi. Just scared Luis taking his spot

I have Hart as GK. Who to bring in; Clichy, Zabaleta OR Baines?

I do believe there will be some MCI clean sheets coming up, and Clichy´s price tag is tempting. But will he play? Baines has definitely lost appeal to me, but is still hard to ignore...

Yaya has improved form but 4 ycs.

ADM, worse fixtures, and will he play this weekend?

@ money face bandwagon. very good avice there and principles to which i adhered back in my competitive days. no longer take the game very seriously as my money league was dismantled due to somebody runming away with it once too often 😀 like you said tho it does make it boring. maintaining a high rank is a goldarn chore. these days i'm just playing for fun. being in the top 1k i honestly wanted to pull my hair out. it was just no fun at all. taking silly punts is more rewarding. although not financially of course
