Martin Skrtel rescues a late point as Liverpool and Arsenal share the Anfield spoils. Olivier Giroud nets once again for the Gunners, whist Adam Johnson breaks Newcastle hearts by lashing home an injury-time winner in the Tyne-Wear derby at St James’ Park.

Giroud and Cazorla Form Continues

The duo rolled up to Anfield on the back of a brace apiece in last week’s 4-1 win over Newcastle and maintained their strong recent showings in a four-goal thriller. Giroud’s goal means he has now scored four times in six appearances since returning from injury, whilst an assist from Cazorla took his tally to three goals and a pair of assists in his last five. Alexis Sanchez and Danny Welbeck were fielded on the flanks once again to accommodate the Frenchman up front and whilst the Chilean’s owners will have reservations in light of a single strike in six, next weekend’s home clash with QPR should afford him another chance to impress.

At the back, the Gunners continue to look porous in the absence of Laurent Koscielny. Mathieu Debuchy’s first goal of the season suggests that, at a price of 5.2, he could be one to consider if his compatriot returns quickly to help raise their resilience.

Liverpool Midfielders in the Points

For many Fantasy managers, yesterday was an opportunity for Raheem Sterling to stake a claim for a return to our 15-man squads. Handed the central role up front as Brendan Rodgers kept faith in a 3-4-3 formation, Sterling failed to replicate his midweek brace at Bournemouth and was instead overshadowed by Philippe Coutinho’s first-half strike, whilst Jordan Henderson and Adam Lallana earned an assist apiece as the Reds salvaged a late point.

The fixtures are now very much in Liverpool’s favour – a trip to Burnley is followed by back-to-back home clashes with Swansea and Leicester before they make their way to Sunderland and Villa. Having fired 27 shots in yesterday’s 2-2 (and 19 in last week’s loss at United), Liverpool have certainly upped their attacking intentions since the new system was introduced and their main men may well force themselves into our plans if they can take advantage of such a schedule.

Skrtel to the Rescue for Reds

The big centre-half header home a late, late leveler to earn the home side a deserved share of the spoils. Liverpool went into yesterday’s match with three clean sheets in the previous four in front of their own fans and whilst they failed to keep the Gunners at bay, Skrtel’s equaliser continued his excellent recent record at Anfield – he’s racked up 34 points in the last five matches on Merseyside. Yesterday’s strike was his first of the season – a far cry from last term’s seven-goal heroics, though the Slovakian has upped his frequency of attempts considerably this term, averaging an effort every 130 minutes compared to 226 minutes in 2013/14.

Defiant Pantilimon Keeps Magpies at Bay

The Black Cats stopper took his tally to 44 points in just eight first-team outings yesterday – an average of 5.5 points per appearance. Aside from their 4-1 home mauling at the hands of City in Gameweek 14, Sunderland have conceded just three goals in their other seven matches with the big Romanian between the sticks. Pantilimon’s seven saves, allied with a couple of bonus points, earned him a second double-figure haul over that period and he remains a real bargain at just 4.5 ahead of back-to-back showdowns with Hull and Villa.

Johnson Leaves it Late

The Wearsiders’ wide man is slowly rediscovering his form after a barren first few months. Johnson managed just a single goal over the opening 15 rounds of fixtures but, after providing the assist for Jordi Gomez’ strike last week, he stepped up once again to fire a 90th-minute winner to seal the points. Whilst his last-gasp strike grabbed the headlines, it remains to be seen whether Johnson, or indeed any of Gus Poyet’s side, can stake a claim for our consideration – given that Sunderland have scored just four goals in the last seven Gameweeks, the safer bet would be on their backline.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Festive rotation horror stories.

It will be extremely rare for all our key players to make the starting XI for every game between Gwk 18-20. Already we've seen some shock line ups (Swansea) and more are set to follow. The best case scenario is that the rotation is staggered for our teams so that only one or two miss a gwk at a time. But for me and I suspect others is that lady luck waves a magic wand of horror across our squads and decides to bench all our players in the same gameweek.

What are your thoughts on festive rotation. Do you fear the worst case scenario of all your good players being rested at the same time? How have you done in the past? Has such a scenario happened to you before? Or has lady luck smiled on you in festive schedules of the past?

For example it is entirely conceivable that all of my best players - Yaya, RVP, Hazard, Downing, Austin and Sanchez are rested in exactly the same gwk.

Can't see Austin getting a rest. He had his suspension fairly recently, and he's a youngish lad, and absolutely key to their chances of winning any game! The others, though...

Don't see Austin or Yaya being benched. Even Hazard as Schurrle isn't just clicking on the left when he plays. Sanchez and RvP will probably be benched somewhere, I am not sure about Downing though.

This is true. Schurrle is exactly the kind of player Mourinho can happily bring in for Hazard for a gameweek and know he'll do a shift. He is a World Cup winner after all.

It'll be worst case scenario, it always is. I'm baffled why we are seeing people making trades like Yaya to Silva or Bony to Kane when surely they should be working on strengthening their benches? I'm aiming to have 15 decent players for Friday so that I'm as covered as possible from the inevitable car crash that ensues.

Great advice. I wldcarded a few weeks back with that in mind - made sure I had two regular goalkeepers and that my bench were all regular starters.

Good planning and you'll be one of the few really set to benefit. I always look at the Xmas schedule as the time to make the most damage to my rivals and my position in the OR for 3 reasons.

          1. There are more points on offer at this time of the year than any other.
          2. Lots of people find it hard to keep up with all the games, with family commitments etc
          3. Most people's teams are simply not prepared for rotation.

You get it right and you will fly up the ranks. Only thing I'm missing is a 2nd goalie, unless Elliot miraculously recovers.

2nd goalie is what I need to work on too. Got a Guzan/Given combo so looking for a keeper that rotates well with Guzan.

I'm not concerned about rotating keepers as Guzan and his 3ots per game are fine for me although I need to get rid of Elliot so looking at Hamer (lack of funds for anyone else) as even a pt here or there could do wonders for rank at this stage of the season.

I am more worried about those snowed out weeks. Previously, auto-captaincy saved the day and Tevez/T.Cahill captaincy meant good rises above the rankings.

Rotation hasn't been a problem, yet.

Make sure your bench are regulars and use transfers now to get rid of any injured/suspended players. In previous seasons I've always had to use all three subs at least once over Christmas. There are always surprise team sheets.

What do you think Jonty, will Kyle Bartley be getting minutes during the festive season, even after the return of Federico Fernandez ?

Thinking of swapping him for Zabaleta. But that will enforce me to downgrade a player somewhere else.

Glad to hear that you're also using a rotating keeper. I am gonna do tha too, with Krul and Pantilimon perhaps. Though I've Lloris atm.

No point worrying about it and trying to second guess managers imo. Any major shocks will impact most of us and even the duds on your bench like Liam Moore may get a run out. I'll just react to any confirmed absentees.

I've had him since the beginning of the season, and I'm not ditching him under any circumstances. He always blanks a 2-3 games and then delivers a big haul, something that needs getting used to. At 6.0, he was absolutely gold. People who were looking for a quick points reap have been disappointed and looking to dump him, IMHO.

"Gylfi had a niggle going into the Spurs game.

But I always believe if a player has any slight doubt in his mind going into a game, you are better off going with someone who is 100 per cent able to commit to what you are asking them to do.

"That was the reason behind those decisions and thankfully they paid off."

We have got to a busy period coming up and to play the same 11 players in every game is suicide for me."

A double up is another matter. I wouldn't want to hold two. My point was Downing is such good value the fixtures don't warrant getting rid. No one else in that price bracket really who brings the returns of Downing.

Agreed. I'd preferably lose Carroll but none of the replacements I'd want have a decent fixture this week, so am looking to ditch Downing -> Silva/Sterling and then possibly do Carroll -> Austin next week.

Morning chaps. I'm flying to Costa Rica on the 27th for two weeks, so probably going to be largely ignoring FPL for GW19, 20 and probably 21. (Although realistically I'll probably log on at some point before 21!)

I wanna get my team set up for this, so assuming that Siggy is cleared fit for Boxing Day I think I'll save my transfer this week:

    Hart (McCarthy)
    Clichy Clyne N.Taylor (Hutton Yun)
Sanchez Hazard (c) Fabregas Siggy (Boydinho - man, hero, legend)
    Rooney Bony Austin

For 20, swap Rooney for Benteke and Hazard for either Yaya or Silva, and probably captain whichever City player comes in. Bench Boyd, Taylor and Clyne in that order, and hope that team does me for 21 as well.

Sound like a plan? (Apols for lengthy post!)

Wow - NYE in Costa Rica!
I'm not sure, it's hard to advise on transfers to last you for multiple weeks.
Fwiw I am looking to bring Benteke in, and Silva/Yaya should equal out over time.
I guess over this time you might end up thinking of Sterling eventually too.

Yeah, always tricky to think ahead. To be honest I'm that excited about spending new year on a beach, knocking back rum and hanging with sloths, that I'm not too worried about it!

I'm bound to end up on a wifi connection at some point, but I'd rather not be stressing about FPL. Just want to get in a solid position to see me through until I'm back, then I've got a winter wildcard to take the edge off being back in freezing England!

While easing someone back in from an injury, the logical number to appear after the following sequence of minutes is 90, to me: 14, 77, 26, 62, 72, 81.

Slowly building it up. I would say this, as a Giroud owner, obviously. We shall have to wait and see, unless AW gives any indications.

            • 12 Years
            11 years, 3 months ago

But for someone to not be able play 90 mins against Liverpool, he would struggle to play 2 games in 3 days. We need Giroud to dfend corners against West Ham, and he has a good record against them. This is simply a narrative I've constructed, so I wouldnt expect anyone to be swayed on my word alone, but it's how I play the game.

            • 12 Years

I would be happy to see Wenger to keep on taking Giroud off at ~70 minutes if Arsenal is leading. The guy is fit, but we saw it last season that he can be overplayed too. Wenger should have this policy with all his essential attacking players who he overplays: Ramsey, Sanchez, Özil, Giroud. Particularly Özil should not be forced to play more than 60 minutes if not absolutely fecking necessary, and with the current squad that should be necessary about 3 times a year. And in any event, there's good evidence that it is optimal to use substitutions between 45 and 60 minutes, bar possibly one held for the case of injuries.

    Guzan Foster
    Baines Azpi Dummett Hutton Moore
    Hazard Yaya Sanchez Downing Boyd
    Costa Austin Bony

    2FT / 0.2 ITB

    A) Foster/Baines/Downing --> 4.0M/O'Shea/ADM for -4pts

    B) Baines/Dummett --> Zabaleta/Vergini

    C) Baines/Moore --> Zabaleta/Vergini

As it seems whoever runs TotalFPL might just not be bothering anymore, I have a few questions:

    1) I know some other good price change prediction sites now, but I still found TotalFPL best for reporting who had actually changed price overnight. Where's the best place for price updates/flag updates now?

    2) The rivals feature at TotalFPL was absolutely brilliant for keeping an eye on many rivals across different mini-leagues all at once. Do any other sites have this feature? I really miss it after only 1 week!

    3) Do FFS have any plans to implement any of these features that we go to other sites for? I'd much prefer to have 1 site for everything! Would be especially useful to have a sidebar of price/flag updates on FFS, and perhaps a Rivals feature for members.

well this answers my question lol....The top 2,097,152 scorers in Gameweek 17 will enter the first round. If there are more than 2,097,152 qualifiers then there will be a random draw amongst the lowest scorers to see who qualifies.

I would assume it is being compared to his home form, just in case people are having benching issues - same with Gylfi; it makes it easier to bench him when he has an away game.

And the other at Southampton. According to plenty on here he was going to struggle against the strong WBA defence, now he will struggle against the strong Arsenal defence just because he's playing away. Hope they keep listening to themselves... 😉

Scout Pick Champions Votes- Festive Schedule

The vote for the Scout Picks Champion for Gameweek 18 (Boxing Day's fixtures) is now live.

Vote or submit your team at the community article only (not this hot topic) http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2014/12/22/scout-picks-community-champion-vote-gameweek-18/

Due to the fast turnaround of fixtures over the rest of the festive schedule we are taking a two Gameweek break for the Scout Picks Champions vote. For Gameweek 19 and 20 we will be reverting to the old system of just a single Scout Picks. This will really help us to plan the Scout Picks and Differentials articles for those Gameweeks.

The next Community Champion vote will be for Gameweek 21 in early January.
