Frisking the Fixtures – Gameweek 18 – The Weak

Having analysed those sides with Strong upcoming schedules over the next four-to-six Gameweeks yesterday, we turn our attentions to those whose fixtures are a little trickier. Two of the top four have some tough looking matches on their short-term agendas, whilst the Swans are bracing themselves as a tough run of fixtures edges ever-nearer.

Chelsea

“frisking

Whilst a content Jose Mourinho may be set to sit down and tuck into his Christmas Day turkey with the Blues three points clear at the summit, the leftovers could well leave a sour taste in his mouth; a Boxing Day meeting with in-form West Ham is proceeded by two tough away fixtures against Southampton and Spurs to see in the New Year. With a potentially pivotal Gameweek 23 clash versus Man City also looming, there’s no doubt that Chelsea are set for some testing times in the coming weeks.

Skipper John Terry underlined his appeal with his first strike of the season against Stoke on Monday night, and that attacking potential could be relied upon by he and his rearguard team-mates across the impending schedule, as their impressive record of five shutouts in their last six will surely be put to the test. Three away trips in their next five will put Eden Hazard’s credentials under the microscope, after the Belgian overturned his poor away form with an assist at the Britannia, while Diego Costa – with just one goal in his last four outings – may well struggle to sojourn his slipping form, with many of his 59% owners considering a re-think.

Swansea

“frisking

A major reshuffle by Garry Monk against Hull at the weekend may have disappointed owners of Wilfried Bony and Gylfi Sigurdsson, but it did prove the Swans’ strength in depth prior to a hectic and challenging festive schedule. A Liberty Stadium clash with Aston Villa in two days’ time won’t have Monk worrying too much, but beyond that Swansea have their work cut out, as trips to Liverpool and QPR are followed by the visits of West Ham and Chelsea to South Wales.

The aforementioned Sigurdsson has recovered from a foot injury in time for the Villa encounter, but with just one assist from his last five outings and with the fixture listing looking so ominous, owners of the Icelandic international may be tempted to offload anyway. Bony’s form, on the other hand, should ensure that managers are content to hold until the striker heads off to the African Cup of Nations to represent the Ivory Coast, at which point the onus will be on Bafetimbi Gomis and new loan signing Nelson Oliveira to step up to the plate. The former has managed just a single goal in 14 appearances this season – without a clinical finisher up top, the creative potential of the Swans’ assets across the pitch could suffer as a result. A possible lack of goals will amplify the importance of their backline’s performance in those testing fixtures, and the likes of Ashley Williams and Neil Taylor will have to be at their very best if they are to continue justify our attention.

Southampton

“frisking

A comfortable 3-0 run out against Everton put an end to the Saints’ five-match losing streak, but Ronald Koeman’s outfit will now be hard-tasked to maintain that momentum, with a trio of fixtures approaching between Gameweeks 19-21 that could well see their top four dreams dissolve. The Saints welcome Chelsea and Arsenal to St Mary’s before travelling to Old Trafford, and with a trip to Newcastle then awaiting them beyond that, it might prove a less than happy New Year for the south coast side.

A clean sheet against the Toffees was their first in six league outings, though popular picks Nathaniel Clyne and Ryan Bertrand will clearly be overtaxed if they are expected to continue to register defensive returns. The finishing prowess of Graziano Pelle also looks vital here: the Italian striker has notched in two of his last three displays, hinting at a return to his early season form, and he will certainly have to be at the top of his game if he is to guide the Saints to victory in their upcoming fixtures.

Be Wary Of…

West Ham
The Hammers are amid an irresistible run of form, having lost just once in their last 11 league fixtures, though the next two are sure to challenge their resolve. Sam Allardyce’s boys travel to Chelsea on Boxing Day before facing Arsenal in Gameweek 19, and the Hammers’ boss will be desperate for Stewart Downing to maintain the level of performance that has seen the former Liverpool midfielder earn returns in each of his last four outings. Likewise, Andy Carroll will be relied upon to continue his recent dominant displays up top; his battle with Terry and Gary Cahill in a couple of days’ time will be monitored by many, with the big Geordie on numerous Watchlists ahead of the winter wildcard season.

West Brom
After accruing two clean sheets in Gameweeks 15 and 16, all looked dandy for the Baggies after they went 2-0 up at QPR after 20 minutes on Saturday. Cue a Charlie Austin hat-trick, and Alan Irvine’s side are now in need of a major pick-up. Unfortunately, the fixture list isn’t in their favour here, as a clash with Man City is up next, before back-to-back away days at Stoke and West Ham, whilst further ahead, meetings with Everton and Spurs round off their January. Budget defensive favourite Andre Wisdom looks set for a sustained stint on our benches, then, whilst the recent attacking verve of Stephane Sessegnon, who has grabbed three assists in his last two, could suffer an abrupt halt. The 13.3% of managers still clinging to Saido Berahino will also be running out of excuses for retaining his services.

Newcastle
The Magpies suffered a tortuous trio of results last week, conceding nine times, being knocked out of the Capital One Cup and being defeated by bitter rivals Sunderland. The good news is that a home encounter with Burnley now lies in wait. The bad news is that they have to endure clashes with Man United and Everton before they reach it and also travel to Chelsea after their showdown with the Clarets. The mid-price appeal of defender Daryl Janmaat looks on the slide then, whilst Alan Pardew will surely be tempted to end his continued caution with the minutes of Papiss Cisse, as the Magpies’ boss will likely be keen to get the most out of his Senegalese striker before he heads off to the ACoN.

YC suspensions, injuries & potential positional changes (eg. Rooney / Sterling) all make whipping up a team a lil too tough atm.

Keep Oscar this week. Guaranteed started or as close as.
What do you have itb? Can you bring in a Sunderland defender? Good form and good next couple of fixtures. Other than that not much else to do.
Oscar is one to think about next gw.

Oscar to Silva is a good move next gw though. Silva has great fixtures.

    N.Taylor (OK)

No idea at the moment. Probably Hazard as if he plays he'll do well. Plus if injured he'll miss it entirely. I can't see him benched for this match. The key question is who will I vice captain - and that is something I have no idea of at this stage - probably someone I think is nailed on so Yaya or Siggy. Boxing Day fixtures are all about struggling through and hoping for the best - not a time for risks.

if hazard comes after 60 min.. then it would be trouble.. I think its better to captain who is guaranteed starter from any of the attacking team like Bony, YYT, or Silva..

          any thoughts.??

Hazard won't come on. He'll either be injured or he'll start. This is not the game to rest Hazard. If fit he's a guaranteed starter for this game.

      At risk....

Neil Taylor....a low hush is heard when I say this, but after playing last week when Monk made many changes I'm convinced he'll get a rest either Boxing Day or the 28th.

Chambers - Wenger has spoken about him needing a rest, he has alternatives now with Debuchy and Monreal. Kosc could also be back.

Hazard - will Mourinho risk the potentially injured Belgian?

Sanchez - he could do with a rest, what better time than the easy Boxing Day clash.

      Safe....

I don't own Oscar - but he looks nailed on so wanted to mention him.

Yaya - can't see him being rested at the moment while there are no strikers...same goes for Silva.

Downing...I'll have to play him, but there's no way he'll be rested for this game

      Sigurdsson - he's had a break after an injury...he's v nailed on.

Hulls fixtures are the best. Kolo is an option too.

A loaded bench would be nice but if its full of 1s and 2s, does it even matter?

I think Giroud is the standout safe captain option this week. He has form, fixture and good at home. If I owned him I'd have no question captaining him.

But....word of warning, I said the same about RVP last week and he ended up with 2pts.

Ditching Sanchez because of this. Really risky move, but I'm hoping it will pay off, wether or not he's rested.

Agree this list. I'd say Carroll's pretty nailed on. Think Sakho will be rotated if any of their strikers. Di Maria should be pretty nailed one since he'll be fresh from a long break due to injury

Many of the popular bigger name options will likely experience a rest for at least 1 of the 3 games in quick succession.

Personally im weighing up the possiblity of using my FT to bring in a better captaincy option for the week, i think this might be a better use of the FT as thats where the most points are won and lost.

Im bringing in Giroud (c) this week for a 1 week punt for either Austin or Kane (most likely Austin)

Safe: Heaton, Baines, Clyne, Yaya, Downing, Benteke, Austin

Reckon Sanchez is likely to get a rest. Think Bony is less guaranteed of game time than some suggest. He's still a risk imo.

      Nailed Attackers in my team:
Sterling, Bony, Siggy: all of em get a day extra to rest/train compared to the other teams
Downing/Austin: Cant really see them being rested considerin their importance
      Not so nailed on:
Hazard, Sanchez, Costa: Expecting each one to miss a game.. hopefully the missed games are spread out over the 3 gameweeks 🙂

      Risks:

Ivan (I think he'll get one rest, but not against a big West Ham side)
      Haz/Sanchez (both pretty much equal)
Costa (I see him being rested for an away game)

I think only sanchez in my team is a major doubt.

Oscar could be a great differential this week if haz is rested or gets a cameo.

Bony cpt as I think he's nailed on. Siggy downing and yaya ok.

Defence, azpi maybe a risk but hopefully not. Zaba and clyne should be ok and panti is not an issue.

If sanchez is out Austin off the bench. I'm happy this week.

Hi, new memeber here. Really unsure of what to do this week, need help from the experts.

        Forster, Jakupovic
        Jagielka, Clyne, Zab, Chambers, Hutton
        Fab, Siggy, Sanchez, Downing, Silva
        Costa, Bony, Austin

Probably benching Downing due to tough away game to Chelsea (thoughts?)
Also torn between the Arsenal-QPR clash, which i see as a key game to me this week. feel like qpr is likely to score, so play Austin, bench Chambers? Captain?

That is the very move I am likely making, Yun > Vergini. I already have Duff, and he is uncertain. I do not feel comfy having only 3 playing defenders, and on the previous page I was given some good advice to try and get a more playing defender in there.

Only worry is Senderos coming back but Big Phil is definitely ruled out for Friday. Clark has been looking dangerous at set pieces and also has been killing it in terms of baseline BPS the last three matches. This spreadsheet shows how much better he is than Hutton against the bottom 13 as well: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1gQf_GXCxfMc5HdYGPGnKTjWVUgk2HTlJy0aWtwzj6kU/edit#gid=0

was very keen to point out when baines was literally outscoring ivanovic by over 5ppg for a prolonged spell to only fair for ivan owners to now laugh at baines owners. the way the pair have been scoring this season you could probably have a monster scoring expensive defender if you lucked out chopping and changing them in and out

Fabianski - Clichy - Hutton -Chambers - Azpi - Hazard - Sanchez (C) - Nasri - Mirallas - Bony - Costa (Krul, Downing, Austin, Duff)

Would you guys go with this knowing that Hazard and Mirallas are doubts and might get the odd 10min, which really wouldn't be the ideal situation... Obv I have Downing and Austin prividing some depth of the bench but I don't think they'll score much this GW. I have 0,8 ITB, subbed Revelliere to get Hutton in so every change would be for a hit.

For ppl planning on playing their WC late:

      A) Silva: wba BUR SUN.. eve ARS che
A possible rest sandwiched inbetween and Jovetic coming back so back to business as normal position wise for Silva. Playing for a very attacking team in form though
      B) Sterling: bur SWA LEI sun avl WHM
Beautiful fixtures and possibly OOP even with strikers returning. Poor form however(though Pool have looked good in attack whenever ive seen him play the past few weeks). May not be rested due to getting an extra day of rest(26th and 29th)

Rooney is definitely my dilemma this week. Logic says midfield role and so, lose him for Giroud.

My concern though is xmas rotation and Rooney seems the most nailed on player. I'm not convinced Giroud will start every game.

Another worry is Siggy. The return has definitely slowed down and can see this being the time for an out of position (and good fixtures) Sterling to return to most peoples teams.

      Would Roon/Siggy > Giroud/Sterling be good move?

Front of team is: Haz, Alexis, Yaya, *Siggy (Marney), Roon*, Costa, Austin.

Played lot of games. He is used to winter break which he won't have this time. 2 tough away games coming inside 5 days. Easier home game against worst away team in the league. Has been on the 'red zone' and 1 midweek champions league rest doesn't take him to 'green zone'. looks little tired (imo)
