Best Defensive Three-Way Rotations

Getting the ideal defensive combination correct in the Winter Wildcard is vital for a number of different reasons. Throughout the season a template comes to the fore regarding the front eight players, however the ownership of defensive picks is often more dispersed across a number of assets so it is essential to get them right.

In many Gameweeks when most of the popular attacking picks gather points for everyone, having the best players playing at the back is what could really move you up the rankings. In addition, as the season progresses, the flavours of the month in the more forward positions tend to change quite rapidly, so this is the area where players will want to be using most of the available transfers.

Charged with handing out five shirts to defenders in our squads, again there are differing approaches on offer. Today, I present you with an article based on the tactic of rotating three budget defenders, based on fixtures, who would ideally be placed alongside two big-hitting defenders. For the remainder of the season I believe that a very profitable tactic will consist of this rotation with a defensive line consisting of ((Terry) (SOT/MCI/ARS defender) (X) (X) (X)) with the X’s being filled by three rotating defenders.

For managers, who still hold that precious Winter Wildcard or are looking to drastically change their backline, here is a list of the eight best cheap defensive three-way rotations, which offer good rotation for the next 10 Gameweeks. I have included the ideal player for each team, as well as the ideal fixtures for each week (upper case for home games) using each rotation, and lastly the cost of the trios.

Best Budget Teams & Players

Aston Villa – Alan Hutton (4.4m)
Newcastle United – Fabricio Coloccini (4.5m)
Stoke City – Philipp Wollscheid (4.5m)
Sunderland – Patrick van Aanolt (PVA) (4.2m)
Swansea City – Kyle Naughton (4.3m)
West Bromwich Albion – Andre Wisdom (4.5m)

Conclusion

Personally, I believe that the three best rotations are (Villa, Newcastle & Sunderland), (Stoke, Sunderland & West Brom) and (Villa, Sunderland & Swansea), however this is only personal opinion and I think that all of the listed rotations are very viable to consider. For every Fantasy manager, the combination of defenders that they pick will very much depend on the goalkeepers that they have chosen and this will be a major factor in which trio you opt for.

For example, if you have Costel Pantilimon in goal you may wish to avoid Sunderland defenders as you could want to avoid the double-up, but this may not be the case as you don’t mind doubling up on a defence that you trust with amazing fixtures.

Great research. I've gone down the three biggish hitters route (SOU, ARS, CHE) with WBA and STK at my rotating ones...will definitely bookmark this though should I downgrade one of my main defenders.

    Cheers for posting.

      What Arsenal def? Kos?
Who's your second pick from Ars attack? Other than Alexis.
Will definitely triple on Ars, but tempted to go all on attack.
      Alexis - Wally - Giroud
If deciding to drop one to get Ospina in then that will be Giroud.

Depends when you will feel comfortable to play him. Against Arsenal, Chelsea and Man City is NO I guess?
Hutton will be OK with him but from next week.
CRP, hull, STK, new, WBA, sun, HULL, tot, WHM, wba, QPR
From this week, maybe Wisdom or Van Aan

Great article, I'm a big fan of defensive rotations.

What do you think about a 4-way rotation with Wisdom, PVA, Wollscheid and Hutton, together with Terry?

I think this works for those of us with lower TV but in the new year you tend to find the top clubs are far more defensively sound in the run in, than mid table teams.

Currently have the 3 way minus Wisdom - but I have WBA keepers...

Think you need two big boys personally...

Not nailed so I went for Wisdom as WestBrom coverage instead, however if you're struggling for cash, just replace Wisdom with Baird in the rotations if your willing to take that risk.

    Good job Dynamic!

From the discussions on my last article about cheap defensive rotations, we came to the conclusion that Stoke-Sunderland-Swansea/West Brom were the best. I was going to expand on that article to write a 3-way one but you've beaten me to it! 🙂

No, their fixtures over the next few weeks are horrendous after the next two, and I would rather have the six listed teams in defensive positions over Burnley.

I like the STK SUN, SWA one but no room for PvA (have Panti, Mannone and Defoe so Sunderland have become WBA for me

No love for Coutinho? He seems to be in great shape and has great stats since Liverpool changed formation...Do you think Sturridge comin back will make him better or worse?

Hutton, Coloccini, PVA & Wisdom all are.

      Naughton & Wollscheid probably are.

Brilliant, thanks for taking your time doing this?

A question, what criteria allows a team be part of this list? Is it purely fixtures?

To be considered for one of the rotating teams they need to have cheap defenders (normally the case for the rotating defenders as they will be often benched) and be fairly defensively solid.

For the player that you chose to play each gameweek, it is mainly fixtures, but also which team is the best defensively if they have a similar difficulty of fixtures.

Hold on to Hutton (who I bought at 4.0) or bring in Wollscheid instead to rotate with Baird & PVA?

Is it madness ditching Kane for Defoe?

A: 4-way rotation at the back (sub 4,5 def) and Clyne + Sturridge and Aguero up front
B: 3-way rotation at the back (sub 4,5 def) and Clyne and Terry/Ivan + Austin/Defoe (sub 7 fwd) + Aguero up front

    Go!
