Liverpool fail to break down a resilient Blackburn backline at Anfield in yesterday’s FA Cup quarter-final, with both clubs now awaiting confirmation of a replay date.

Liverpool Stumble in FA Cup stalemate

Despite enjoying the lion’s share of possession and chances, Liverpool were unable to breach Blackburn Rovers’ defence in their FA Cup quarter-final clash and had to settle for a 0-0 draw. Brendan Rodgers named two changes from the side that triumphed over Burnley in midweek, as Joe Allen and Alberto Moreno dropped out for Glen Johnson and Lazar Markovic. Raheem Sterling lined up in the left-wing back role, while Markovic was deployed on the opposite flank.

Sterling’s employment in the midfield four since last weekend’s clash with Burnley could be a concern for the 20-year-old’s 31% ownership. In the Merseysiders’ last two outings in all competitions, the bulk of their goal attempts fell to either Daniel Sturridge (12 shots) or Philippe Coutinho (eight shots), whereas Sterling only mustered a single shot in both encounters – no doubt due to his increased defensive workload when operating as a wing-back. Couple this with the fact that the 7.9-priced Coutinho has been in fine form of late, bagging two goals in three starts, and the England international has dropped slightly in terms of that internal contest.

Liverpool may have lacked the cutting edge to break the deadlock at Anfield, but their rearguard stood firm once again, recording their fourth clean sheet in six across all competitions. This was despite losing Martin Skrtel in the opening stages to a head injury – the Slovakian centre-back landed awkwardly after contesting an aerial duel with Blackburn striker Rudy Gestede and was attended to on the pitch for over eight minutes. Rodgers was quick to reassure reporters after the match that Skrtel sustained no serious damage.

“He is fine but he will go to the local hospital to make sure. If he had his choice, he wouldn’t but we have to follow procedure. He was fine, up walking and talking after the game but as a precaution we need to make sure he is okay.”

Elsewhere on the injury front, Allen picked up a knock in training so is a doubt for Liverpool’s away tie with Swansea next Gameweek. Meanwhile, Rodgers declared Steven Gerrard fit for the Swans clash after the 34-year-old was given the all clear to return to training.

“Steven has been working well with the rehab team. He will be back training this week and will be available for the Swansea game.”

Reds Made to Wait for Replay

In an unusual turn of events, Liverpool look set to wait nearly a month to determine their FA Cup fate. League matches taking precedence over cup ties, means a rescheduling of the Reds’ televised match against Swansea next Monday is out of the question, while UEFA regulations stipulate that domestic matches shouldn’t run concurrently with Champions League or Europa League fixtures.

With European football scheduled for the next fortnight and an international break following straight after, the earliest available date for their replays is poised to be April 7 or 8, which would fall in between a visit to Arsenal and a home clash against Newcastle in Gameweeks 31 and 32.

Should Liverpool prevail over Blackburn in the replay, Uefa’s rules will also have a knock-on effect in the Fantasy Premier League stakes. With the FA Cup semi-finals scheduled during Gameweek 33, Liverpool’s trip to Hull City would likely get moved to Gameweek 34 due to the midweek European football and hand Fantasy managers more teams to consider for the double. At present, only Chelsea and Leicester have definite double Gameweek 34s, though Villa’s Gameweek 33 clash with QPR needs rescheduled after their weekend cup victory over West Brom saw them progress to the last four of the cup.

This is what I am considering….with Kane, Austin and Kun up front it is easy. Have Punch as 5th mid. Still affords a good defense including Terry, Bertrand etc.

Depends on your squad really, post your current XI and subs and we can say more easily. For example we don't know how urgent a problem Jones is without knowing the rest of your defence

      1. Aussie_Toon_Lad
        • 12 Years

No worries mate here's my squad

        Lloris, Krul
        Ivan, clyne, dawson, Jones, PVA
        Hazard, Silva, Eriksen, Downing, Puncheon
        Kane, Aguero, Austin

        1. FionnMac

          10 years, 10 months ago

          Krul
          Ivan Dawson PVA
          Haz Silva Eriksen Puncheon
          Kane Aguero Austin

So that would be your XI, with Downing, Clyne, Jones (no order) on the bench? If you're reasonably happy with that I think you can afford to save, Downing has very good fixtures after the Arsenal game which you may want him for, and I'd keep Eriksen for now. What's Jones' prognosis though, I know he missed last game, is he injured? B and C are kinda tempting, but Punch has a nice fixture at home to QPR and could get some points

I don't feel the optimism about an Arsenal win in this forum. Both teams are toe to toe in the league and had horrible results. With Arsenal having lost every big game against ManU recently, United has to be the big favorite...(I'm An Arsenal fan btw)

  7. foley_fd

    Mini league tactics question.

If you've got a lead, do you play tactics that involve defence rather than attack? For example:

    You both have Eriksen.

Ordinarily, you'd sell because you think you can improve your team by downgrading him.

But you're worried that a big haul will hand advantage to your opponent.

    Thoughts?

a really good question. I agree that if you really absolutely want to win the ML you need to be tactical.
Having said that - I'm 20 pts ahead in ML but finding it impossible to rise above the 28K mark overall (because of template teams). I'm going to start taking a few risks to improve my OR

I don't think I will get Costa for the double.

Leicester away surrounded by Man u, Arsenal and Liverpool isn't that tasty.

Esp. when you look at who your other striker targets play around then.

I will want x3 of Giroud, Aguero, Sakho, and Kramaric (if Leicester make a fist of it) around then.

Might not even have x3 Chelsea at all as those fixtures don't look great for cleansheets which puts me off a double up in defence; mids other than Hazard are too rotated, and above all else it screws up the rest of your team having x3 premium players from one side - esp. a side who more often than not take their foot off the gas at 2 nil up. Is anyone looking at that Leicester away game for example and thinking that's 4-5 nil Chelsea?

I disagree - yes it is high but not when say for example bertrand is averaging 4.7ppg and is 5.7m. Thing is yes you got ivan and he gets your 6 points but then the rest of your team suffers as you invest so much in a defender - for me its not worth it

haha of cos aguero is a must and most could afford him and ivan together.

                imo its more of

eriksen + lescott (or any 5m def) or mane + ivan

another comparison could be ozil instead of sanchez

Comparing his price and points to Terry you get a ratio of 20pts per million - 16 more points for an outlay of £0.8m. Over the season that works out at a margin points gain of 27 per million which is easily the best use of limited funds that you'll find in this game.

All this says is that, based on points scored to date, you would always spend the extra money to get Ivanovic is Terry/Ivanovic were the only choic - the Bertrand/Terry comparison gives you 18pts per million over the season.

Was actually expecting response to be the other way, with most saying yes.

It's such a huge amount of money but he's only a few points behind aguero. Guess the argument is can his points be covered for the most part by a cheaper option and spending the extra money elsewhere.

Yep. Think a lot will also get him even though they may think he's not worth that £ just because of the ownership and also because they can afford to. Happy enough with Terry and just hoping he outscores Ivan in the double

Same here. Think the mistake was not getting Ivan in Jan WC, but I played mine early and at the time Ivan hadn't scored in a while. I was all set to do Rose > Ivan this week, but his price rise killed the move. Could be a blessing in disguise judging by opinion.

I have an article about Chelsea defenders / Ivan coming up tonight or tomorrow hopefully.

As long as I did my research correctly Terry's ownership is lower overall but higher in top 10k

Think it was something like Ivan 18% and Terry 33% in top 10k**

** This is where I find out I was doing my research wrong 🙁

That's a great opportunity for those who do have Ivan to gain on the top 10k!

The top 10k have probably had Terry for longer, or got him before his recent goal rush.

haha spend the money elsewhere but where? everyone could have the standard midfield, aguero+kane without downgrading ivan..and the 3rd striker spot/5th mid spot has plenty of budget options out there

Costa or Sturridge up front, of packing out a midfield like Ozil, Sanchez, Hazard, Silva. Hazard doesn't allow for that and the extra premium player you get in could easily cover Ivan's odd goal/assist.

Would he be on your team if he was a 19 goal striker? Essentially that's what he is, not even counting baps or assists.

      13CS + 4G = 19 striker goals

      at 7.5m that's a bargain.

I guess depends on where you downgrade. You can downgrade one of your mids to someone like Mane or one of your strikers to lets say Sakho to afford him.

It would be the 4th mid or 3rd striker spot, i.e. Mane instead of Ozil, Sterling, Eriksen or Giroud instead of Costa/Sturridge.

With Ivan, what we get is necessarily a Chelsea flank player at only 7.5m, who also gets clean sheet points pretty much every other game.

The way he positions himself while the team attacks and often runs into the box himself, it is only for his bad luck, that he hasn't scored or assisted more this season.

      So it is worth it.
      Glad I took him at 7.2. 🙂

Agree. I reckon he'd be tempting even at 8m. Regular clean sheets and attacking threat. He's an absolute bargain. The points forgone in downgrading him would outweigh the points you could gain from using the funds to upgrade mids and forwards. And most importantly, it would be frightening not having him in your team.

it's the same debate people made for Baines. he is like a midfielder who can also get 4pts for a clean sheet.

his average points are so high, people just think cause he is a defender he is too expensive compared to other defenders. however he gets more points for goals as well as the clean sheet mentioned earlier.

lots of good 4.5 and under defenders at the moment and with Aldy back you can have cheap saints coverage if you want it....

That was last season. This season Baines doesn't get enough goals, assists or clean sheets to justify his price, and also loses points for goals conceded.

But Ivan is a player who scores more points and has a better ppg than any other defender or midfielder you can get for 8.0m or less. He's still a bargain!

I'm looking at bringing in an Arsenal defender and just wondered what is their first choice back four when fit? Is it something like:-

    Gibbs/Mert/Kos/Bellerin

Or does Monreal fit in there somewhere? I guess Debuchy is first choice if/when he returns.

Thanks for any advice on this.

Mert's place is up for grabs by Paulista. Kos should be nailed on. Monreal and Gibbs and will always rotate. Gibbs probably gets the nod in terms of most preffered. Bellerin has done great for them at RB, but Debuchy will take his place when back. That could be another month or so at least yet though.

Really good team. The obvious move would be Cazorla > Sanchez I guess

Hah guess I ballsed up last week then. Did Sanchez>Eriksen in order to leave funds for Costa, but now not so sure!

Even against Burnley though? 😆 Fair enough. But then you have Hazard Sanchez and co too BUt if you feel like he can get a haul it will certainly be a good differential

Burnley are no mugs at home, tricky place to go Turf Moor, I still expect City to win but wouldn't be at all surprised if it's closer than people think

I watched highlights of the QPR vs Spurs game and Austin was involved in everything QPR did. Should have had two penalties, hit the bar and had a couple of other decent efforts. Not a bad shout at all and could be a great differential. It's a london derby so I fancy goals.

Sanchez. Giroud will tick along nicely but I reckon Sanchez will explode again before the end

if baines is worth the cash and people have no dispute about getting him..ivan definitely is imo.

i know baines is on penalty and FK..but ivan without them is doing as well in the attacking points department..and chelsea being a stronger team defensively..ivan is worth the premium.

i dont think too if it means having him for the whole season (especially earlier season where ur cash is limited).

though most of us do enjoy the baines hauls 🙂

Lesson I have finally learned from this year being different for the sake of being different is a bad thing and rarely works out . eg Getting Walcott in because he is back from injury .

having yaya now is like gambling without any confidence..you are just hoping for the best. he might cause you to fall further behind

would rather admit my mistake earlier and make the silva move ( I myself is a walcott owner and from my experience i can tell you its not too good to be stubborn and thinking that he would outscore the rest)

For the first time in my 8 seasons on FPL I have managed to save my wildcard and now looking to use to my advantage with 10 games to go.

Thing is, I am quite happy with my current team and not sure when/how I will use it. Anyone else facing a similar dilemma or has had previous success/failure in saving a WC until towards the latter stages of a season?

I saved it for the first time last season and had a slight advantage for the DGWs but not a huge one. Might be different this year with the blank in GW33 to factor in as well.

Considering a wildcard, would appreciate any opinions on whether these are worth it:

Wollscheid, Wisdom, Eriksen & Herrera > Dawson, Ivanovic, Colback & Coutinho.

Also are many bringing Costa in? I'm tempted but Giroud has been doing well for me, so may wait until the Chelsea DGW.
