hmm didnt knew panti was having a dgw. could do that but currently on a low budget

have gone the entire season with just one keeper tactic with krul and now panti which has worked really well. might shift to krul again

    Panti Krul

    Bertrand Terry PVA Naughton Bruce

    Sanchez Eriksen Hazard Silva Boyd

    Aguero Kane Austin

Austin -> Gomis & save the 2nd FT? Don't feel like wasting a FT getting Naughton out..

Yeah, I think Kane and Eriksen may gradually leave my team over the next few weeks for that reason.

Players with something to play for at the bottom(or top if they Champions League rat race is still on) are far more likely to perform, especially against dud sides.

    Is Kane ruining FPL?

Over recent weeks I have been struggling to wrench my team away from the template arrangement it got into in GW28 (the Spurs-QPR DGW). Like most others I ended up with Kane and Eriksen. Unfortunately for me I didn't go with Austin as well and missed out on his "bonus" DGW this week (which no-one would have anticipated at that time).

What I have realised is that the automatic presence of Kane in virtually every top 10k team (99.7% in the top 1k) releases so much cash that there are very few hard decisions to make. In addition we are all effectively playing with 10-man teams every week. Kane is only an issue in terms of captained or not. Most weeks it would help me more if he missed a penalty and was sent off than if he got a hat-trick.

I hate being stuck in the template rut but I also don't believe in taking punts just for the sake of it. I want the team that I think will score the most FPL points, not the one that is the most different. For a period this season my team was quite different because I avoided the Aguero GW22 bandwagon and exited Sanchez immediately he got injured and never brought him back. Those were good decisions and helped me. I ended up with Silva (for example) when relatively few others had him. I got some good (c) GWs from Costa and Rooney.

But GW 28 resulted in most players having Eriksen, Hazard, Silva, Kane, Aguero and at least one Arsenal player of their choice. With those 6 in common the variance is very small. And in my view the root cause of this has been Kane's low price and unbeatable value.

Fortunately I still have my wildcard which I intend to play in GW 34. And I have decided that's the time to remove Kane from my team. His next 3 fixtures will be Southampton and Stoke away and City home. Kane can score against anyone, we all know that. But the surprise factor is wearing out, teams will be realising that if you stop Kane you stop Spurs and I think I see signs of that starting to happen. I think a case can be made to let him go from GW34 onwards.

Giroud will be a must-have because of the GW37 double. Rooney is also a must-have in my opinion. But most of the other players I want will be mids. Hazard and Willian for DGW34 and probably 2 from Arsenal and 2 from Liverpool for DGW37 (I am assuming a GW37 DGW for Liverpool though GW34 would suit me better). Costa is out of the equation and Sturridge I have no interest in. I am therefore planning a GW34 switch on wildcard to 3-5-2. No more Kane and no more template!

GW37 Spurs v Hull will be the worrying fixture but as everyone will captain an Arsenal (or Liverpool) player that week I think I can live with that.

The fact he releases funds is great but he's still not an obvious captain choice to many most weeks so don't think he's ruining it entirely.

Players like Kane give people who've made early mistakes a chance to make a comeback, it makes the game more interesting, it reduces the advantage the expensive teams have.

      1. Ruth_NZ
        • 9 Years

Yes. You'd have to read the whole thing to understand what I mean by "ruining". I guess my point is that Kane makes it easier but at the same time his universal ownership tends towards producing a template. The only really significant variances at the moment are captain choices. That makes the game narrow and settled and I prefer it more challenging and volatile.

As a matter of interest, look at the "cricket" scores. The people involved are concentrating on the differences but what stands out to me is that the team scores are so very close. 11 teams per side and yet there are differences in the totals of only a few points. That suggests a lot of very similar teams.

The similar team thing happens every single year though to be honest. People moan about the template year in year out no matter who is cheap and who is not, it always happens with a small group of players.

But i do think it's slightly different when it's a cheap striker who is the must have player. Those 3 spots are so precious and we all effectively only have 2 this season

Maybe but there's always that player or players who are must haves whether it's because they're cheap or because they're obvious captain options.

Coleman and Suarez spring to mind from last year.

I guess so, though I have no doubt that 100% ownership of a 6.4m player in the top 1k or 99% in the top 10k doesn't happen every season.

Last season I guess Toure and Suarez were very highly owned by this stage but were expensive. That would have forced harder decisions elsewhere. Owning Kane doesn't force any hard decisions, it makes other decisions easier.

I replied to your "questions" before by the way, just in case you didn't see it.

Cool cheers (I hadn't seen it).

Yaya and Suarez were both highly owned, although we didn't really have top 1k+10k figures like this year (at least not from what I saw) so couldn't comment on ownership.

While you did have to make other decisions you still did what you had to in most cases to get those players in.

Difference then was choosing your cheap player. This year it's how to spend your money.

Granted it makes things tougher in top 10k when Kane is so highly owned but as I posted before the fact he's not an obvious captain choice makes me think it's okay that he's so cheap

Michu and Fellaini two yrs ago are the most apt comparisons, and they might not even have been at Kane's level. If a player outperforms his price by 3-4m it is extraordinarily easy to set up the rest of your team with all the expensive players, as you rightly pointed out in your original post.

But if it's that easy why aren't we all getting green arrows every week?

Owning expensive players and getting green arrows aren't the same thing, which I think is kind of the point he is making. We might all field better, more effective teams with 3-4m less but spending the max budget is a tough habit to break. There are not as many expensive players, especially this season with slow price changes, so we are all subconsciously selecting from a small group of "premium" players.

But I have nine reds in a row, so don't look to me for too many answers!

Well if we can field more effective teams teams then he's not ruining FPL, we are ruining it by thinking we have to spend the money?

There is a good case for that and it is something I have considered too. The tendency not to want to leave large amounts in the bank is strong.

But look, if Kane releases, say, £4m you wouldn't otherwise have you don't have to choose Terry over Ivanovic, Ozil over Sanchez, Mata over Silva. You can use the £4m to have the more expensive player in every case. That's the sense in which it gets easier.

The more tough decisions we have to make the more challenging the game is.

Yeah I do get what you're saying. For example I kept Sanchez for ages while owning Silva, Hazard, Di Maria because I had Kane and Aguero. For sure he's made it easier to do that.

But eventually Sanchez and Di Maria stopped scoring and the downgrade tempted me but because I had the money I kept as there was always different transfers to make.

So yes he's made it easier to fund expensive players but that hasn't made it easier (for me). In some ways it makes it harder to let go.

Yes indeed. And that's another problem. But that's an internal trap and getting to recognise those is part of improving as a FPL manager I think.

Yes. This, too. Good point. A common fantasy game obsession. Spend your bank, even if a cheaper player is hotter or has a better match up.

I've tried to stop myself and think I've improved on that aspect this year.

I certainly captained Austin and Kane earlier than I usually would because of ignoring their price. Same reason I played Kane v Chelsea.

By saying something does not make it fact.
          Cricket scores :-
          593 v 678, 685 v 620, 707 v 707, 608 v 722, 615 v 571, 623 v 572.

          or in order :-
          571 572 593 608 615 620 623 678 685 707 707 722

If anything this blows your point.
Kane has been an enabler for many but this season is no different maybe even less template than previous seasons.
As mentioned before, the Jan WC is the main cause for post Jan template teams.
You make a lot of assumptions for somebody playing their 1st season don't you?

            In short.
That's a swing of 150 points from teams of 11 active players - your point isn't valid in my book.

A 25% difference between the extreme ends of the spectrum. With 11 teams playing per side. You think that is a wide gap? Divide by 11 and let's look at the average 'per team' scores:

            52, 52, 54, 55, 56, 56, 57, 62, 62, 64, 64, 66.

As for your last point, I try not to make assumptions, I try to figure things out for myself. The above post is a result of that. I far prefer that approach than treating the hackneyed assumptions of experienced FPL players as if they are some kind of gospel truth.

I Do think that is a wide range considering the quality of the 88 players involved and bear in mind the GW hasn't finished, that scoring spectrum will widen. In fairness, the gap may not be wide in some of the weeks to come, my point is you're using a stat that doesn't back up your arguement.
Btw, taking a 5 point lead on a player every week equates to close 200 points over the season that's why I make this point.
I applaud your approach as this is what this game is about in my mind - making your own decisions rather than following the pack.
My point is more how you articulate your points and responses and that's why I mention your attitude & being your 1st season. I've seen many 1 season wonders post on here before and then vanish.
Varied opinions is what makes this site and it would be a boring place if everyone followed the hackneyed assumptions.

Yes, I tend to write in a challenging way. But that's also how I think. I have to live with that (for good and bad) 24 hours a day. 😉

I appreciate that someone new appearing to be a know-all can be frustrating and annoying. I have had plenty of flak for it and that hasn't always been entirely pleasant either. But mainly I'm just honestly posting what I think and in the long run you can't do more than that.

I sold him this week for Benteke.

Selling him the first time during the January WC wrecked my attempt at an all time best OR, but selling him the second time is the only hope of salvaging something. If Benteke goes off on Tuesday I will start to crawl back.

The scenario I need, and chances are quite low, is that he regresses to mere mortal status but people keep holding him because he is the greatest value player we've ever seen in FPL. People historically hold on too long to season dream teamers in the last six weeks or so as those players have brought so much success in the past. I'm not saying it will happen in this case and it likely will not, but I had to take the chance.

I think its a worthy risk to sell him now as we head to the close of the season. The impetus has gone from Spurs, they don't have a lot to play for. In saying that, neither do Southampton or Stoke. Those might be more open fixtures than you might think.

Yes. I'm not even saying that removing Kane is the right thing to do. It's a very close call and I'm sure most people won't. The context of a GW34 wildcard and the shape of my team for the lsat 5 GWs just about makes it a worthwhile risk to take for me.

I understand that very well. It took quite some time for me to even consider the possibility, when I started looking at wildcard options I automatically included Kane. It took quite a bit of thought for me to even look at a team without Kane in it.

Crazy post and cant believe its hot topic.

Basically your saying he is such good value that you are selling him.
Then you describe Rooney who is twice as expensive as a must have

Reading between the lines, Kane Blanks Rooney scores and fickle you wants to swap

Bit harsh trigger. Why not be a little more open minded. People said it was crazy to sell Aguero and Sanchez not long ago. Value becomes less important the closer we get to the end. Differentials in form are the new gold dust especially if former template players wane

Including 12 home to Arsenal 11 away at pool not even including the 18 he scored earlier against chelsea

            3 things:

            1. Rooney is already in my team and was my captain this week. I also believe he will out-score Kane between now and the end of season (if he stays as striker).
            2. When planning for the last 5 GWs it is points is that matter, I am not going to be concerned with long-term value at that stage. Maximising the DGWs will be much more important.
            3. You post very little on here until you have a good GW and then you are all over it like a rash. I have very little respect for that.

I will respond to the first two points, and ignore the third as its a personal attack based on no evidence.

              1) Rooney is ok but considering the difference in price and the form between the two there is no comparison

              2) Of course points matter in the last five gameweeks, but it shuld be easier to come up with a really good team , when you include the best value player in the game rather than exclude him. All that extra money you will have to spend elsewhere.

I sense i have annoyed you, wasnt my intention, although i appreciate my somewhat blunt posting style does tend to aggrevate some

"...it's a personal attack based on no evidence..."

22 posts in the last 6 hours.
36 posts in the last 24 hours.
36 posts in the preceding 4 weeks.

I don't mind a blunt posting style, I can be blunt myself. But I don't like being casually dismissed as a "fickle" points-chaser. I probably think about this game as much as you do. I have much less experience; sometimes that produces good new perspectives and sometimes it leads to obvious mistakes. But chasing last week's points is not something I did even at the beginning.

Far too touchy. As you are determined to launch a personal attack over something as ludicrous as posting frequency let me point out that i have had eight green arrows in the last ten ,

It's not a personal attack. It's a fair observation which I only backed up because you claimed it was groundless.

I know you are a good FPL manager. I read your blog. Sometimes I learn things from it. I don't need a green arrow history to convince me. Though I think if you followed your own advice (for example regarding Ozil and Sanchez back in GW25) you'd be doing even better.

I think a lot of very good FPL managers are too swayed by % ownership and too reluctant to break the mould. I sense that's the difference between us about Kane as well. I am willing to countenance it. You are not. Though, to be fair, unless I had a wildcard I wouldn't be looking at it either most likely.

I only mentioned green arrows because it disproves your "evidence"

Just because i dont agree with taking Kane out you have gone off on one.

Also saying that very good FPL managers are too reluctant to break the mold implies they are not good managers.

The reason very good managers are reluctant to break the mold is because it can easily backfire and they recognise how risky it is.

Fair enough on the first point.

                        2nd point is wrong.

3rd and 4th points are debatable. I may learn that you are right with more experience. At the moment I am challenging those assumptions.

I don't want to be as good as you as a FPL manager. I want to be better than you. Anything wrong with that?

Sometimes i think i should change my forum name , because everyone judges everything i say based on my record, and my reputation.

Dont know how others get good ranks every year , but i just try and keep it simple. Looking to take Kane out just seems to me like trying too hard to be different.

Its a simple game really, biggest mistake most make is trying to be too clever. The obvious is usually the best. And like you said before initially taking Kane out didnt even enter your head.

If your chasing though and dont mind if it goes wrong then go for it, but if you want to get up there in the hall of fame then you have to concentrate right to the end , because say next year you have a really great year you may regret letting rank balloon out at the end of this season

It's my first season and I have it down as a learning process. In fact I started as a complete "casual" and only got more involved because I hated scrolling down page after page in my ML to find my team. 😉

Apart from that I want a top 10k finish. 4 figures on the season history looks so much better than 5. 😉

Next season I'll hope to get much closer.

Thanks for your blog by the way. As I said before I have learnt some good things from it.

I think I need to keep him, for the cover and to release the funds.

But you're right, if you don't captain him, you need to hope that he blanks/gets a yellow etc to be happy.

Ruth NZ, I wish I was 3/4 of the way through my first season of FPL & knew everything too...

The object of this game is to roster the highest scoring players, full stop.

So, if *everyone* happens to have: RVP, Bale, Suarez, Aguero, or... Kane to close out a season then so be it.

(Oh, I'll let you in on a little secret now...
Trying to over think things & go without these studs makes climbing the ladder even more difficult. Take this bit of advice from the guy who failed to hop on the Yaya train at all last year; it wound up costing me at least a Top 5k finish.)

Now, I fully appreciate that differentials can help us make-up ground.
Although, aiming to rid ourselves of arguably the best player of this calendar year, who you've already pointed out has a "low price and unbeatable value" seems a rather silly way to do it.

Further to this idea regarding his price & value... let's not forget that Kane's £6mil price tag frees up a lot of cash (£3 to 6mil) that can be spent to bolster the rest of our squad.

Moving right along, you've made mention of Kane's two games vs.Southampton & City but, failed to address his final three contest against: Stoke, Hull & Everton.
Middle table clubs, with little to play for, should make for excellent games for him because, Spurs are still fighting for a place in Europe next year.

(Perhaps you're planning to grab Kane again after using your WC?
However, for those of us without a WC, dropping Kane only to then pick him back up again is a poor use of two precious transfers that could certainly be utilized more effectively down the stretch.)

To finish up, I appreciate that you've given this a lot of thought but, I see it as a K.I.S.S. moment.

      Keep It Simple Stupid. 🙂

You thought losing Sanchez back in GW23 and not getting him back in GW25 was stupid as well.

I did mention the Hull game at the end.

If you look at my comments in what has become a very long thread you'll see that I think it's a very close call and that I am by no means suggesting it's the "right" thing to do. It is just what I have pretty much decided to do based on how I want to shape my team for the final 5 GWs after wildcarding in GW 34.

My assessment that Kane may slow down a bit may be wrong. If it's badly wrong my team will suffer for it. But that's a risk I'm happy to accept.

          > You thought losing Sanchez back in GW23 and not getting him back in GW25 was stupid as well.

Not having Sachez for that run of fixtures (Lei, Cpl, Eve, Qpr, Whu, New) was silly though... Remember, we can't be result oriented in this game.

And as an aside, Sanchez is still producing at a heavy hitter level with over 6pts per in his last four games.

          > Yes. I'm not even saying that removing Kane is the right thing to do.

This is precisely what you're saying though!
I mean, could your quote be any more clear?:

          > No more Kane and no more template!

In the end, even if it's just to save the extra £3 to 6mill over his more expensive counterparts*, Kane seems like an un-droppable asset atm.

*Pretend we have the same amount of cash to spend and:
          Kane + Player A > Player B + Player C

Last response to you and then you can write whatever you like.

"Not having Sanchez for that run of fixtures (Lei, Cpl, Eve, Qpr, Whu, New) was silly though... Remember, we can't be result oriented in this game."

You say it was silly and you mocked it rather viciously at the time. I explained my reasoning and was proved right in every way. Maybe you had the wrong logic, ever think of that?

"This is precisely what you're saying though! I mean, could your quote be any more clear?"

Nope, if you read my original post and subsequent comments it is clear that I think it's a narrow call and am only talking about what I plan to do, not what anyone else should do.

The original comments about Kane "ruining" FPL are just about the effect of a 6.4m universally owned striker on the game. As Ginkapo put it last night "the game isn't working properly unless the budget is tight."

It is apparent to me that you (and others) take it very personally when someone new appears and questions conventional wisdoms. That's somewhat of a shame but that's life I guess.

Ruth I hear this talk in gambling all the time...
Just because you hit on 20 & manage to spike a miracle Ace in blackjack doesn't make it a winning play in the long run.

Similarly, not rostering a highly-owned, high-scoring, in-form Sanchez -type player for a run of fixtures like that will make us a loser in the long run.

Finally on this Sanchez matter, for argument's sake, let's be results-oriented & say I got it all wrong, just this once.

I'll stand by my HoF ranking to justify my ability to make the correct call much more often than I do a poor one.

So, you can stop pointing to an outlier as some *Ah-ha gotcha* in an attempt to undercut separate points I'm making.

              > Nope, if you read my original post and subsequent comments it is clear

              Yes, you were very clear...
              > No more Kane and no more template!

And, don't backpedal now, have some conviction!

              > The original comments about Kane "ruining" FPL are just about the effect of a 6.4m universally owned striker on the game.

And, I listed many other players, from past seasons who fit this bill of *essential* & in turn, universally owned: RVP, Bale, Suarez, Aguero, & Kane.

These are the one's that everyone bitches & moans about because it makes some template team but, what else are we going to do, not roster the highest scoring players?

              > It is apparent to me that you (and others) take it very personally when someone new appears and questions conventional wisdoms. That's somewhat of a shame but that's life I guess.

              "Shame of life"
              "questions conventional wisdoms"
              Pfft... Get over yourself!

This is just a Fake Football forum, for eff sake...
And, if you somehow feel that this is *personal* in any way, then well, I truly have no words.

              Good night.

Talk about knee jerk lmao, He has 17 goals in 16 games and you wan't to take him out just because everyone owns him? Well good luck with that 🙂

Don't give me that BS that teams have figured him out just because he blanked. he scored a hat-trick the game before, did you forget?

You say Rooney is a 'must have' but have you seen his fixtures? Yet you comment on Kane's fixtures.

As for no more 'template', Kane is 1 player, if you want a differential try capping or buying different players.

The fact that you want to sell the leagues top scorer who's price is ridiculously cheap is just ludicrous.

Good Luck with your 3-5-2, knowing that you have sacrificed Kane, who's price is affectively that of a 5th mid playing upfront 🙂

I think you need to connect your comment about thinking Rémy will play more, and getting rid of Kane, then you will have a more powerful point. 😀

PS Don't telling people you told us so about Sánchez, no one knew what was going to happen, and he could have easily exploded the week he returned. We've all made big calls that have worked out this season, and we've all got some wrong too.

You know, for a post that reflected on the effect of a universally-owned 6.2m striker on FPL and then followed it by talking about my plans to remove him from my squad for the last 5 GWs this didn't half cause some pandemonium.

I still don't really understand why people became so vitriolic about it. It was just a FPL manager in their first season discussing some ideas and thoughts. After all, I didn't ask for it to be hulked.

Anyway, that's water under the bridge now. In case anyone has the slightest interest, I have just reviewed my wildcard plans again. It just works better without Kane. Sorry and all that but that's what I'm going to be doing. 🙂
