Dugout Discussion

The Dugout Discussion – Monday

The final match of Gameweek 32 arrives this evening as Liverpool entertain struggling Newcastle at Anfield. Brendan Rodgers’ side are reeling from back-to-back losses against United and Arsenal have all but ended their Champions League hopes, though the Reds will be looking to build on their midweek cup win at Blackburn.

Philippe Coutinho will be hoping to add to his Ewood Park winner and improve upon a run which has harvested a single assist in the last four Gameweeks. Jordan Henderson has struck in four of the last five league fixtures and is the Merseysiders’ form man as Fantasy managers are afforded the chance to scout their assets ahead of double Gameweek 34. Elsewhere for the home side, Raheem Sterling will be looking to return to form against a defence with just two shut-outs in the last 19 Gameweeks – he seems poised to start up front after Daniel Sturridge was ruled out with yet another injury.

John Carver’s side arrive on the back of a four-match losing streak that has seen them score a single goal. With Papiss Cisse still suspended, the Magpies look likely to struggle again and with injuries hitting hard at the back, there’s been little on offer to grab our attentions on Tyneside. With four home fixtures in the final six, in addition to trips to Leicester and QPR, the upcoming schedule suggests Carver’s men could bring in the points if they can start performing.

    In your opinion:
    A) Yaya (WHU) and Baines (BUR) for -4
    B) Baines (BUR) and Ameobi (TOT)
    C) Yaya and Dawson (cry)

    Thanks!

I have 12 points lead on my H2H opponent, but he has Sterling and Moreno to play. Fingers crossed...

Liverpool's Double Gameweek (DGW) could prove a significant turning point in mini-leagues as the season draws to a close.

Skrtel appears the choice defender with Moreno worthy of consideration. Daniel Sturridge is hands down the best bet up top - if he’s cleared fit to play. Regardless, the Liverpool striker still carries a significant injury risk with the games coming so close together, thus making him a high risk, potentially high reward option.

In midfield though, there are three main contenders vying for a fantasy berth or two.

    General Opinion
Raheem Sterling was the standout option in the early part of the season but his fantasy form has been on the wane in recent weeks. Meanwhile, Philippe Coutinho seized the spot in the limelight with a series of solid returns, fulfilling some of that fantasy potential he showed early in his fantasy career. Jordan Henderson is the man in form though, and at £6.7m, he's also the cheapest route to the viable Liverpool midfield options. Henderson also seems to have penalties in his locker now that Gerrard is consigned to a periphery role in the squad and seems to have the edge on the forums. It’s also with noting that Sterling carries a risk of okaying in a withdrawn role, but also the threat of being pushed further forward if Sturridge is unavailable.

Surprisingly, there doesn’t appear to be much info available to substantiate opinions so i thought I’d dust off my fantasy brain and have a go myself. With both of Liverpool's GW34 fixtures taking place outside of the former 'culture capital', I've done some digging into the three's respective returns, using only away games for comparison.

    Stats
Number of Noteworthy Hauls (more than 3 points in a PL away game - GW points in brackets)
Sterling: 8 (from 14 away appearances)
    Spurs (7), West Ham (10), QPR (7), Leicester (6), Burnley (11), Villa (6), Saints (8), Arsenal (5)

Henderson: 5 (from 14 away appearances)
    Spurs (7), Leicester (10), Villa (9), Swansea (8), Arsenal (7)

    Coutinho: 3 (from 12 away appearances - 1 sub)
    QPR (5), Burnley (6), Southampton (11)

Away Shots (away goals in brackets)
    Sterling: 32 (4)
    Henderson: 14 (3)
    Coutinho: 22 (2)

Away Chances Created (away assists in brackets)
    Sterling: 25 (2)
    Henderson: 21(2)
    Coutinho: 16 (1)

    Away Penalty Box Touches
    Sterling: 82(!)
    Henderson: 25
    Coutinho: 18

so, maybe Sterling over Coutinho then?

I ran a stats comparison over last 4 matches

      wasn't even close

        I'll be going Sterling.

Hendo is still a consideration for me, but Coutinho feels a bit too punty. He's much improved, but that doesn't necessarily make him the best option.

I'm tepted by Sterling and Coutinho actually? Who takes corners btw? Henderson?

Hendon looks favourite for all set pieces while Gerrard is not involved.

Coutinho does get a look in though.

Ok great tnx, but you seem to know much more about this, so maybe you can give your opinion on this:

If Sturridge will be back for the dgw (let's assume he does), would Sterling drop back to the middfield so the front 3 will be: Coutinho - Ibe - Sturridge or reckon Ibe/Coutino will lose their place up front instead of Sterling?

I don't think my opinion is any more valid than yours, but I'd expect Ibe to be the one making way.

Demi is your best bet for lineups.

      wow great insight there!

I am finding it hard to free up the cash to get Hendo + Sterling with only enough from Eriksen and Mane to get Hendo + Cout so not sure what to do.

I could drop silva too and get fabregas, sterling, henderson (-4)

        Thanks DC.

Cat among the pigeons for you then I guess. I've been out of touch for a while so I can't really give much advice but (Fab+Sterling)x2 (-4) vs Coutinho x2 + Silva seems to lean in favour of the hit to me. Certainly a tough call though

Great post SoS, I'm still keeping Coutinho fwiw, yet this take on Sterling is certainly convincing. Interesting, now with Sturridge's recent injury woes, seems a double in their midfield is all but guaranteed for me.

Coutinho comes out really poorly in these stats. I assume this is away matches all season? I wonder whether he'd look better over all matches (home and away) since the new year. I think recent home matches may be more informative than the away matches early in the season.

Or is Coutinho the new Modric?

Mixed feelings about this evening's match

I want Liverpool to win, but I also need 7 points from Tim Krul to win my PP Cup game (and avoid being eliminated from Last Man Standing).

A penalty save in a 1-0 win for Liverpool would be ideal.

How does this side look for -4 in dgwk 34?

    Krul

    Skrtel Terry Schlupp (Bruce PVA)

    Sterling Hazard Silva Fabregas (Boyd)

    Kane Aguero Vardy
