Scout Scribbles – Lukaku Boost for Toffees

Romelu Lukaku looks primed to return for Everton’s weekend tie against Burnley. Callum McManaman’s reserve outing provides a timely boost for West Brom, while there’s mixed news on the fitness of Newcastle United’s injured duo. Elsewhere, Palace hope to welcome back Jordon Mutch and Frazier Campbell, and Stoke are optimistic that Victor Moses will feature again this season.

Lukaku poised for weekend comeback

Romelu Lukaku trained with the Everton first team on Tuesday and is expected to recover from his hamstring injury in time for Saturday’s visit of Burnley. Toffees boss Roberto Martinez also revealed that Leon Osman – who’s suffering from a soft tissue problem in his groin – has a chance of being passed fit for the weekend:

“Rom is training today with the group and I would expect him to be fully fit for Saturday. Last Saturday he wanted to be involved but it was a real risk in terms of where the injury was. But he’s been working really well with the medical department and probably now we’ve got the green light to allow him to join the group. If he trains and doesn’t get any reaction over the next few days then clearly he will be fully fit and available for the next six games, which is exactly what we want. With Leon, we’re really pleased with the scans and it’s a soft tissue problem that, knowing Leon, maybe he’s got an opportunity to make it for Saturday.”

The Scout Says: Prior to being sidelined through injury, Lukaku had turned in some of his finest displays of the season. From mid-February onwards, the Belgian racked up eight goals and three assists in nine appearances across all competitions and started to finally look back in form after a barren first few months. The Toffees host Burnley on the back of three wins and a draw in their last four and with four home fixtures in the final six (BUR, MUN, avl, SUN, whm, TOT), Lukaku, at 8.7 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), may yet have a part to play in our run-ins.

McManaman impresses in warm-up ahead of Eagles tie

Callum McManaman clocked 62 minutes of pitch time during West Bromwich Albion’s defeat on penalties against Nuneaton Town in the Birmingham Senior Cup. The English winger was said to have been “lively throughout” by the club’s official site.

The Scout Says: Although the Baggies’ defence will be Tony Pulis’ primary concern in light of shipping 10 goals in the previous three encounters, five strikes in seven outings suggests their offense could also do with a boost. McManaman might not be famed for his goalscoring prowess (ten in 79 appearances for Wigan), but his propensity for beating a man would add an extra dimension to a side that deployed midfielders James Morrison and Craig Gardner on the flanks against Leicester City. Between them, they attempted three dribbles and completed just two against the Foxes, whereas McManaman’s 57-minute stint against Swansea City yielded eight attempted and four successful dribbles. A return to action at Selhurst Park on Saturday could see Pulis revert to the 4-2-3-1 he employed against the Swans, with Gardner dropping out and a three of McManaman, Saido Berahino and James Morrison playing behind central striker Brown Ideye.

Contrasting fortunes for Magpies duo

Reports indicate that Newcastle United starlet Rolando Aarons has suffered a fresh hamstring injury that rules him out of the remainder of the season. Meanwhile, head coach John Carver said that summer signing Siem de Jong – who’s been sidelined with a collapsed lung – is poised to feature in the Magpies’ Under 21s fixture against Derby County on Wednesday night but is unlikely to be available when Tottenham Hotspur visit on Sunday.

We’ve got a reserve game tomorrow night, and Siem de Jong will definitely play in that.

The Scout Says: Having slumped to their fifth successive defeat, the Toon are in dire need of any sort of catalyst to kickstart their floundering campaign. With two goals in five appearances in all competitions before succumbing to injury, Aarons – with his searing pace and capable finishing – could’ve been just that. De Jong, however, also possesses the potential to reignite Newcastle’s attack. The Tyneside outfit have recorded a solitary goal in their last five matches and are clearly suffering from the long-term ban Papiss Cisse picked up in Gameweek 28, so could profit from the inclusion of support forward De Jong – who netted an average of one goal in three matches for Ajax – for a home clash against Swansea in Gameweek 34.

Potters refuse to rule Moses out for season

Stoke City are hopeful that can Victor Moses can recover from the hamstring injury he sustained against West Ham United on Saturday before the season is out. The former Palace winger returned to parent club Chelsea to receive treatment.

The Scout Says: Moses recorded two goals in four starts from Gameweek 26 to 29 and looked to be rediscovering the kind off attacking flair that attracted numerous suitors during his spell at Palace. As transpired in the Hammers encounter last weekend, Moses’ absence could pave the way for Mame Biram Diouf to slot back into the starting line-up for Southampton’s visit next Gameweek as the lone striker, with Jonathan Walters – who was fielded up front last week – dropping back to the right flank in a 4-2-3-1 set-up. Mark Hughes will be tempted to keep faith in Mark Arnautovic, though; handed a second start in seven, the Austrian’s late leveller at West Ham served up a ten-point return, his highest of the season.

Palace hopeful on Souare as duo plot return

Crystal Palace are optimistic that left-back Pape Souare can shake off a dead leg in time to feature against West Brom on Saturday. Elsewhere in the Eagles camp, Fraizer Campbell and Jordon Mutch could also be back in contention for the Baggies clash after recuperating from hamstring complaints.

The Scout Says: Considering Souare has logged just three starts since a January move to Selhurst Park and the competent Martin Kelly waits in the wings to reclaim the berth, the Senegalese defender’s absence seems of little consequence. Certainly, with a single clean sheets in 12 under Alan Pardew, few, if any, will be considering the Palace backline. Further up the field, given that the Eagles are experiencing a rich vein of form – winning four matches on the bounce – Campbell and Mutch will struggle to forge a way back into the starting XI, with weekend bench roles looking the obvious outcome.

A lot more goals given he's a former three-time WC winner, and scored better than 1 every 2 games at other clubs.

Wasn't actually being serious tbh, just mentioned him as obviously you're a saints fan.

I'd have to say probably Falcao or Lovren

really? would like to hear Lucy's opinion on this one because I think his role has changed. he has become a team player as opposed to a goal scorer...

do you think he can turn it around and find his early form season again next year?

        1. Lucy.
          • 10 Years
          9 years, 26 days ago

I guess it depends on your expectations. I think he did great for the first half of the season and then there was far too much pressure on him when performances slumped - that was down to a lack of squad depth and the unlucky JRod injury.

As you say, his hold up play is still excellent.

          1. djenzio
            • 9 Years
            9 years, 26 days ago

would have been interested to see him play with J.Rod, shame it never happened.

didn't Koeman talk about how his role changed to more of a team player/hold up player towards the second half of the season?

I don't think he has been an amazing signing, but he is no where near the worst signing of the season.

            1. Lucy.
              • 10 Years
              9 years, 26 days ago

Yeah I agree, nothing amazing but solid. Had JRod been fit, I think people would have been far less critical because he wouldn't have had such a spotlight on him.

exactly. looking forward to seeing him next year, and southampton in general. really hope the Saints can keep the performances up and be up there with the best of them for years to come, really impressed with them last two season and they have brought some great players to FPL.

I think we'll struggle next season unless we buy a decent quantity of players - that squad needs much more depth for Europa League.

Still think regardless of price he was a poor signing.

Even when no other strikers are fit he doesn't get played, still having to pay him and at 33 they won't get any money back from him.

They may not have lost a lot of money but it was still a poor signing.

Balo, Shaw, Mangala, Lovren et al.

      Balo the worst for me.

ADM I think had a good start to the season but my belief is he never wanted to leave Real, hasn't adapted well to the country and in general might be a bit miserable. Given how we all know he can play, he's not a bad buy, just disappointing so far.

Balotelli was utterly ludicrous, I still can't get over the fact that they thought he was worth having anywhere near the team.

      Telly is up there

Mangala has been shocking, makes £50 million for David Luiz look less mad, which is saying something!

Falcao in runner up - such a fall from grace for El Tigre

Shaw has to be up there, along with Falcao.

Mangala has been dreadful with his huge price tag and Cuardado is looking like a waste of space

Ballotelli wins it for me though. With Sturridge out for most of the season, and Lambert clearly not being in line for a run of games, Balo had a real opportunity to make good on his potential, and he's flopped.

Falcao was only a loan player, I think credit should be given to United for not risking a transfer on him, instead its a trial

Shaw is only 19, he's for the future not the now.

Bony £28m - not needed and has locked City into 4-2-2-2.

Mangala - very poor for £32m but at least has time on his side.

Rodwell - £10m seems huge for a club like Sunderland to pay for a bit-part player.

Well, I see your point. But the Bony signing caused Jovetic to exit the CL squad and supported Pellegrini's outmoded 4-2-2-2. I don't think City needed him and I think having him has hurt them, that's why I think he was a bad signing.

Cuadrado has barely started a game and is there to replace Salah in the squad. I'm not sure about Cuadrado either to be honest but he hasn't affected Chelsea in any negative way.

Bony replaced Negredo. Jovetić being out the CL squad has had no impact, as he wouldn't have been picked to play anyway. Bony has been away at AFCON and injured since singing, but still has still looked good when played.

Regards Arsenal, yes I think you are stuck with Wenger. And unless he buys a top central defender, a top defensive midfielder and a top striker in the summer it will be groundhog day all over again for Arsenal fans next season. The squad just isn't good enough to win the PL or to really be a force in the CL.

    Ok here's the million dollar question;

Do I keep Bony? If he's not gonna play this week, or for the remaining 6 weeks I might as well get rid this week for a -4 hit. I play in a draft league so there aren't many options left for the taking.

I wanted to switch him for Vardy but he was swiftly taken.. what would you do?

    A) Keep Bony
    B) Bony to Ings (-4)
    C) Bony to Pelle (-4)
    D) Bony to Nugent (-4)

Please remember this is a head to head league not cumulative points. Cheers

Don't like any of those options really.... Burnley have hardly scored any goals in like last 10/12 games.

Pelle is a donkey, Nugent playing deeper and at risk of rotation (talk of Kramaric playing this week).

Fabregas is the one. £27m for a player of his class was the bargain of the decade.

Wenger doesn't always get it right in the transfer market but Sanchez for £35m was a great signing too.

Suarez was £23m. And he wasn't proven in any major league then whereas Fabregas was a World Cup winner proven in La Liga and the PL. I think I'll stand by my comment. 😉

I was going to put this in my original post. I'd almost argue Costa was great value too. At 32m he wasn't completely over the top given how much players are going for at this stage

Good piece of business, but not the best.

For me it's close between Costa and Fabregas. I'll go Costa just due to the latter's drop off in form, and also because he is exactly what Chelsea were lacking last season. He fit that role perfectly.

Cresswell even more IMO. Fantastic value at £3m.

If we are talking about value some of the free transfers were excellent:

          Fabianski to Swansea

Diego Costa. Joint-top scorer in the league with fewer minutes to score the 19 goals and crucially NONE of which were penalties unlike Aguero & Kane. Played a big part in Chelsea winning the league and has a great work-rate off the ball as well.

Who are you captaining this week? Have you lost hope on Kane? Does Aguero's brace mean he is back or just a tease like with Sanchez the week before? Both City and Spurs are in dire form. Pelle will play 4-4-2 at home making Kun less appealing. A punt on Murray maybe? or Silva? I'm tempted to go Silva as I expect a City reaction and Silva to be the architect. Any thoughts?

If you have much less possession than the opposition or have a lot less chances, then score, it's against the run of play.

That the team who has scored have done so while not playing as well as the other team previous.

      As an example:

Man City have had 75% possession for first 20 mins of a game and have had 10 shots on target but no goal.

Liverpool meanwhile have had 25% possession and no shots on target. They then punt a ball over the top and score from it.

That would be classed as against the run of play
