Team of the Season – Ryan Bertrand

Having started the 2013/14 campaign at Chelsea, Ryan Bertrand would only make one appearance for the Blues before moving on loan to Aston Villa in the January transfer window. The defender made 16 starts for Paul Lambert’s struggling side, registering only three shut-outs.

Before the beginning of last term, Bertrand would find himself on the move once more, with Southampton signing the left-back on a season-long loan. The Saints had kept 15 clean sheets in the previous campaign, so Bertrand was immediately thrust into the Fantasy limelight, priced at just 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) as the season got under way.

Despite losing Luke Shaw, Dejan Lovren and Calum Chambers, Southampton’s defensive unit once again delivered for Fantasy managers under new boss Ronald Koeman, with new recruits Fraser Forster and Toby Alderweireld, along with Bertrand, helping the Saints register 15 shut-outs once again – a total bettered by only Chelsea (17) and West Brom (16).

Southampton conceded 33 goals last term, helping them to the second best defensive record in the league, with champions Chelsea letting in just 32. Bertrand finished the season as the fifth highest scoring defender in FPL with 140 points, considerably more than he had totalled across his four previous years. In January, Southampton made Bertrand’s loan move permanent, with the left-back joining for £10m on a four-and-a-half year deal.

THE STATISTICS

It took little time for Koeman to stamp his mark on the Saints’ new-look backline, with his side keeping three clean sheets in their first five matches, before registering four consecutive shut-outs between Gameweek 8 and 11.

After such a fine start to the season, the Saints struggled to maintain their early resilience, though they did manage eight more shut-outs by the middle of April following a 2-0 win against Hull in Gameweek 32. That was to be their final clean sheet of the season though, with 11 goals conceded in their final six matches.

Bertrand benefitted from the revamped Bonus Points System, which rewarded attacking full-backs more this season, picking up 13 bonus points. That’s less than team-mates Jose Fonte (16) and Nathaniel Clyne (15), although Bertrand did miss two of Southampton’s clean sheets due to a three-match suspension following his red card against Swansea in Gameweek 23. The left-back scored twice and provided three assists last season, highlighting his attacking prowess.

THE PROSPECTS

Bertrand finished the season priced at 5.8 in FPL, having peaked at 5.9 during the final month of the campaign. Given that Fonte started last season valued at 5.5 after Southampton kept 15 clean sheets in 2013/14, we can expect Bertrand to be priced at a minimum of 5.5, with a hike to 6.0 more than possible.

The left-back averaged 4.1 points per appearance, the same as Clyne, with Fonte (3.8) managing slightly less, so it would seem more than likely that all three will find themselves in the same price bracket next time around. That is, of course, if Clyne remains at St Mary’s, with the England international heavily linked with a move away from the south-coast club with just a year left on his contract.

With Toby Alderweireld uncertain to return to Southampton following his season-long loan, Koeman will have to bring in some new faces in defence. Having recruited so well last summer, the chances of the Southampton rearguard being strong once again next season look high, though.

Of Saints’ 15 clean sheets, 11 came at home – a tally only matched by Chelsea – with eight of those against sides in the bottom half of the league. Delivering in plum home fixtures is a huge plus for any Fantasy prospect, although the Saints’ inability to pick up defensive returns on the road is a concern, given that a price hike is on the cards. Their total of four away shut-outs was on a par with Leicester and Hull, for example, and half the number delivered by West Brom.

As mentioned in the Nathaniel Clyne article, our assessment of Southampton’s defence may well depend on Koeman’s choice of keeper in the continued absence of Fraser Forster. Both Kelvin Davis and Paulo Gazzaniga will undoubtedly be cheaper than the likes of Bertrand and if either can nail down a role as the Saints’ temporary number one for the first few months of the season, they may well prove a far more popular pick as we look to save on budget at the back.

Let's start our own football organisation and get the major leagues to sign up. We could make it mandatory to show assists under every post match score, and reclassify hitting the post as a 'shot on target'.

Aww yeah I see what you mean, yeah that's harsh, it should be neutral I agree, though a shot which hits the woodwork, is usually closer to a goal than a lot of shots that are on target so I see what you mean.

Exactly, that's why I say overpriced, but he's a flashy player who catches the eye, 10 assists, and Pardew valuing him at £40 mill or whatever just means he'll be overvalued by casuals and FPL towers.

Apparently on sunday Bayern will announce the signing of Gundogan. They're becoming annoying like Real...it's a fantastic player that they don't need since they already have Thiago and Schweinsteiger in that role. A LOT of other teams desperately needed Gundogan.

    1. Wilshere Knowledge
      • 10 Years
      8 years, 11 months ago

Schweini is 30 though I suppose, Thiago doesn't really play in the same position, Pep seem to prefer Javi Martinez as a centre back, Lahm is 31.

But still, I don't understand why so few BvB players have any sense of loyalty...

      1. Frank Black
        • 11 Years

Schweini is 30 but he's amazing and Thiago said that he prefers to play as the center of the MF because that's his position. Sure, you can advance him and play him as an AMF but he's not really a 10. Even at Barca they wanted him to be Xavi's heir.

        1. Wilshere Knowledge
          • 10 Years
          8 years, 11 months ago

I don't think he'll just replace Schweini, but they'll surely have an eye on the future, and he's a bit more injury prone nowadays.

          I agree Thiago isn't a 10, but I wouldn't like him in a 2, I think he's a Modric type 'third to third' player.

I think the interesting thing will be when they start looking for Ribery and Robben replacements, as there aren't too many top wingers these days.

Not really, you should have seen the games he played when he came back(keeping in mind that the entire team had been out of form for a long time).

Khedira is a different situation, apparently he's been rejected by a few big teams like United and Arsenal because of the doubts they had about his injury and in the end he found himself with only two offers: Schalke and Juve.

It's a strange one alright, I don't rate Khedira much anyway, not my cup of tea, still a lot of interest in Gundogan though, perhaps some turned off but the Bayern link is strange. Apparently they'll look to Reus as well, most likely when his contract runs down. *sigh*

Did he, I've heard Bayern are interested all, Reus too would like to move on at some stage, not this summer though, Dortmund want to keep Reus and Hummels another season at least, they don't want to lose too much.

Obviously he could and probably will move on at some point, but he has already turned down offers of huge wages to move to massive clubs. I'd love it if he could be a modern day Gerrard/Totti.

Can you see him improving his finishing over pre-season? He has many more touches in the box, and he shoots from closer positions.

But we're talking prices where a lot of Arsenal fans cant afford to ever see their team play. I certainly cant afford to go watch them as a student.

And, last year the prices went up AGAIN that raised £3m, which Kroenke took out of the club in 'consultation fees'. In this day and age, clubs simply dont have to rob fans to be run effectively.

this is the issue with rising uncapped wages.......... the fans pay in the end, and theres always better off fans

Chelsea have frozen ticket prices in 4 or the last 5 seasons as far as I recall. Quite good going considering the ground is relatively small and always sold out.

But whoever said the football is no longer a working class game and that younger fans are priced out had it right. I just don't understand why fans aren't pressing their clubs more on the issue of safe standing areas, where there could easily be a 25% drop in ticket prices without loss of revenue. Safe standing typically increases capacity by around 20% in the areas concerned, add to that the increased discretionary spend and a 25% price drop in those areas would typically be cost neutral.

Would improve atmosphere at the grounds as well.

And at Chelsea but we didn't persuade the club to take the plunge yet. I don't think any of the big clubs want to be the first, plus there's the Liverpool "how dare you consider such a thing after Hillsborough" lobby to overcome.

The weird thing is that there are sections at Stamford Bridge which are, effectively, standing areas because everyone stands. But they are less safe than they would be if actually constructed for safe standing.

Why would you think Liverpool would be against safe standing areas? What happened at Hillsborough wasn't down to just having fans all standing, the issue was overcrowding, the resulting crush, and police negligence.

I know. But if you have been into safe standing you will know there is a big "never again" lobby and Hillsborough is often used as the example of "what we don't want to go back to".

                It's illogical, I agree, but that's what's out there.

It's understandable though, a wariness if you will, personally I think it'd be great, its just in England I can see as you say a lot of people against reimplementing it. Some clubs would also probably rather just have seats due to more income and less need for stewards (whose wages would have to be paid). Money is what drives football now unfortunately. :/

I can understand Chelsea wanting a 3rd striker, but why on earth would they pay big money for a struggling player, and secondly why on earth would Falcao be happy to sit on the bench as a back up?

Unless of course Mourinho is looking to reignite the Falcao-Costa partnership..

          Lower than £300k a week can still be a lot. 😆 😉

A third striker really shouldn't be earning over £100k, and I can't see Falcao lowering his demands to that.

And what about Solanke? I know the Chelsea youth system nonsense was and is never going to happen, but they could have at least let the illusion last more than a few months. 😉 😀

Brown is 19 and has a lot of development to do. Bamford is ready and might easily be Chelsea's 3rd striker next season but he, and the club, could prefer a season loan in the PL at a club that will play him regularly. He has been great in League 1 and the Championship but has not played PL yet and is still only 22.

Yes, he's young, but even at 17 there should be enough talent there to be getting game time ahead of a 58 year old Drogba and Oscar playing up front...

Will he be anything more than an Afobe or Eisfeld?

Bamford is 21. If he was good enough for Chelsea, I'm sure he would have made more inroads than he already has.

Think of how Sterling (20) Wilshere (23) are constantly called overrated despite performing at a higher level for their clubs and their country.

I think he is good enough to be third striker . Chelsea really don't need Falcao .

    Mirallas

"Borussia Dortmund and Atletico Madrid were interested [in January], but Everton obliged me to stay at the club," he told reporters.

"I understood because our young group performed below expectations. So I had to stay, but in the second half I was suddenly playing less games.

"There are promises broken and yet it makes for a somewhat awkward relationship with the coach. Soon I will have a conversation with him.

“I have had a beautiful two and a half years with Everton. I have experienced many great moments and for that I must thank the club.

"So I don’t know whether I will leave, it is a decision I have to make in consultation with my family."

Please stay in England! FPL gold with regular game time! 😀

On another note, does anyone think Benteke is good enough to be first choice at top 4 club?

I think his exceptional ability in the air aside, he is a bog standard striker. If you don't play direct, which no top team really should, he's isn't all that good.

    Thoughts?

I dunno, he's played so little this season, it's hard to remember.

Just thinking about the FA Cup semi final goals though, there's clearly more in his locker than ability in the air. Isn't it the case that for Belguim he often plays wide, with Origi up top?

I can't profess to have an intimate knowledge of the Belgian team, but watching him for Villa over the last few years, I can rarely recall anything brilliant.

Often seems to lose the ball, his link up play doesn't seem great, often spurs chances, doesn't have a great work rate, doesn't make very good runs etc...

Only at Chelsea, maybe United, though more likely as second choice. He's a player who needs the system to suit him, so more crosses, long balls will suit him, what makes him better though is his touch, however mostly he'll just do well at a club that'll use his brute strength to batter defenders around.

But that's my point. No team, in this day and age, is going to be effective playing long ball. It's the reason Spain have dominated Europe for years, and why Germany look in such a strong position.

You have to play the percentages, and possession and territory rule in football.

I'm not saying your wrong, its just Chelsea under Mourinho and United under LVG play very much like that, with a lot more physicality to their strikers, crossing, long incisive balls for the striker to play off or knock down. I don't want him anywhere near Liverpool, I want us to play decent football personally, I believe that's the right way, not just for the fans but for success. He'd do well at those two top four teams by virtue of their system whether thats right or wrong, that's all I'm saying.

he's a good finisher but a bit like Adebayor. only turns up for a few months every season per manager and then either poor or injured the rest
