Moving Target

Scout Report – Gerard Deulofeu

Everton’s second maneuver in this summer’s transfer market finds a familiar face returning to Goodison Park, with Barcelona winger Gerard Deulofeu penning a three-year deal. The 21-year-old La Masia graduate reportedly turned down more lucrative offers to team up with Toffees boss Roberto Martinez once again, after spending the 2013/14 Premier League campaign on loan at Goodison Park.

Speaking to the club’s official site, Martinez confirmed that Everton have already acquired their two main targets – having earlier snapped up Tom Cleverley from Manchester United – before talking up the winger’s talents for the season ahead:

“It was always our intention to work extremely hard behind the scenes to get some really good business done early on during the transfer window. Our objective was to secure Tom and Gerard as quickly as we could and I’m really pleased this is exactly what we’ve done. We are getting an even more mature player now than he was a couple of seasons ago and a player who considers Everton as home. This is why we are incredibly excited to have him back here on a permanent basis and to encourage him to grow, develop and mature his enormous talent.”

The History

Born in Riudarenes (a Catalonian community), Deulofeu enrolled in Barcelona’s youth academy at just nine years old. Following eight years of training, the fleet-footed wide man earned his senior debut for the Barcelona B team in March 2011, before being called up to the full squad a month later.

Deulofeu made his first league outing for the full side in October 2011, coming on for Cesc Fabregas in a 5-0 drubbing of Mallorca. Aside from being afforded one further appearance in the 2012/13 campaign, the Spain international plied his trade with the second team, netting 18 times in the Segunda Division – boosting his tally to 27 goals and six assists in 68 appearances.

The next stop in Deulofeu’s development would be a season-long loan deal to Everton. He got off to the perfect start on Merseyside, scoring in a 2-1 home victory over Stevenage in the League Cup, though his first league strike took a little longer to materialise, arriving in a 4-0 win over Stoke City in late November. Although a hamstring injury in December sidelined him for five weeks, Deulofeu still managed to record three goals and four assists in just 900 minutes pitch time (spread out over 25 league outings) during his stay.

Deulofeu was granted a first-team berth at Barcelona in the following pre-season, ruling out a second loan spell at Everton. However, Barca boss Luis Enrique experienced a change in heart and accepted a one-year loan proposal from fellow La Liga outfit Sevilla. Deulofeu failed to nail down a starting berth with Los Rojiblancos and was subsequently named in Marca’s Worst Team of the Season, despite still managing to record one goal and six assists in 17 league outings. Indeed, Deulofeu served up nine assists across all competitions for Sevilla last season – no team-mate managed more.

Deulofeu has been a regular starter for Spain at every level of the youth system yet has only earned a single cap for the senior outfit. He was named as the Golden Player of the U19 Euros, having bagged two goals en route to the trophy.

The Prospects

It’s something of an understatement to suggest that competition for places is strong on the flanks for Everton. Whether Martinez chooses to roll out a 4-1-4-1, 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 set-up, he has the likes of Leon Osman, Aiden McGeady, Kevin Mirallas, Steven Pienaar, Ross Barkley and Steven Naismith all offering options out wide. With reports also suggesting that Martinez could return to Tottenham to snap up Aaron Lennon on a permanent deal, there’s a great deal of uncertainty over his preferred starting XI ahead of the new campaign.

Although Deulofeu’s inability to earn regular starts at Sevilla would appear to run contrary to Martinez’s assertions, he did, regardless, post some impressive statistics. No Everton midfielder accrued more than three assists last term, yet the Spaniard notched six in just 780 La Liga minutes. Furthermore, he fashioned a chance for his team-mates on average every 55.7 minutes, which far outstrips any of the mainstays in the Toffees’ midfield, and could boost Romelu Lukaku’s points potential as the lone striker.

Given that – aside from Mirallas – no Everton midfielder scored more than two league goals last season, it’s obvious why Martinez is looking for new faces in this area. The fact that Deulofeu has already played under Martinez should render any settling-in period redundant and afford the new boy the chance to hit the ground running, though his classification may ultimately determine how we view his prospects. The Spaniard was listed as a forward in Fantasy Premier League last time around and a similar scenario would ensure that he remains off our radars, given that he’ll be utilised out wide by Martinez.

Although a relatively kind price is anticipated – around 5.5 to 6.5 – in order to arrive on our radars, Deulofeu needs to be listed as a midfielder and nail down a regular role for the Merseysiders.

Certainly, the opening schedule will allow us time to assess the lay of the land. After a kind opening home clash with Watford, Martinez’ men face all of last season’s top eight in addition to a trip to West Brom over the following nine matches, suggesting that most Fantasy managers will be more than willing to hold fire on Everton coverage until the fixtures smile kindly from Gameweek 11 onwards.

Liverpool paid 28 mil for him and his history is good. All new players are a gamble. (Sanchez good and Falcao bad) The cheapies are better gambles but less chance of success. I prefer to start with Recognized point scorers from previous seasons. (haz silva etc)

Coutinho or Firmino to play the no.10 role in Liverpool?

    1. Bolivian Seaman

Don't know yet. It's the formation that is important. Liverpool were quite good with 3-4-3, then they went to 4-3-3 and conceded 6 against stoke on the last game of the season..

I think firmino will have to play the number 10 role if sturridge is back because he can't play anywhere else.

      1. Billy Gilmore

Conceding 6 to Stoke had little to do with the formation and everything to do with the mentality of the players.

I seen someone say they could interchange and pivot during matches too, Firmino most likely further forward and off a striker though.

Fabinho close to joining City from Monaco, a quality RB but I think Zabaleta will get the nod and if he shows good form at the start of the season he'll keep his position. Thoughts?

Think it's 50/50 on this one. If something happens to Zabaleta and he gets a run in the team he could shine, he's more promising than those two have ever been. I think he'll be sold in two years though to a top 15 European club, he'll have a good resale value.

Morning all. On the back of my FPL blog on Friday (I'll leave that here for anyone who didn't see it...):

I've been asked to write for this site:

Amazingly accurate and great read by the way. You should tweet it out.

I've seen them getting retweeted and such but never actually visited the site.

Hopefully they'll be actively tweeting the articles. I don't think twitter followers necessarily equals more website views.

FFP have 100k followers but from what I could see their forum was dead. Whereas FFS has less than 40k followers but as you know the forums are alive and kicking.

Don't see any harm writing for them though, be good to get your name out there! Should give Jonty and see if you can set something up or do the same weekly article and post it here under community articles? 🙂

      1. Doolittle
        • 11 Years
        8 years, 10 months ago

Yeah writing something on here would be great, the problem might be that the articles on here are stats based and provide FPL help, whereas mine wouldn't be. I don't know if there would be a conflict if the same articles went on two fantasy football sites?

I'd recommend emailing Jonty to see.

I expect you're right re: help - but it would definitely be good as a community article if nothing else!

I think the community in general like the different kinds of articles that we get through that part of the site.

Arsenal’s €30m move for Juventus star Arturo Vidal is 90% finalised, according to Spanish radio station Cadena Cope.

The Gunners have been linked heavily with a move for Vidal in recent weeks and it is appears as though they are close to sealing the deal for the Chile midfielder.

The Spanish radio station adds that the transfer is on the verge of being made official. We’ll be chasing this story up today.

Started at Metro, picked up by Dailymail, repeated in a Chile newspaper as rumours (quoting the British press), which was then reported by other press as the Chile papers own sources, picked up by other sources in Chile, then picked up by the Telegraph, and then picked up by everyone.

I think this was the general timeline.

I'd be very surprised by this, he isn't a DM and plays in a position that Arsenal are best equipped. He's a great player so may be a fantastic signing anyway, but it all feels very un-Wenger like.

It's painful watching Ramsey on the wing, and Ramsey said he really wants to be playing in the middle. 13/14 Ramsey was one of the best central midfielders in the world at the time.

Because it was going well, and then he couldn't resist bringing in Nolan and Carroll, and then their form after christmas was abysmal.

He's a good manager for keeping so-so teams in the PL, but West Ham are building a project, and they wont make progress under BFS, imo.

he basically took them as far as he could. With the new stadium, West ham owners have aspirations of being a top 6 side.

Then he's a moron. He was what 3rd/4th in line and nothing suggested otherwise, especially the fact that agreeing a deal to sell you is a pretty big warning sign that the club doesn't want you...

Maybe he was on more money at Liverpool than he would've been at Sunderland.

    Morning all!

Loving the summer so far - not watched any football or touched any Fantasy games!

I do however feel that as a true englishman I should jump on the womens world cup in time for the semi final! Anyone else getting on?

No because you'll ruin it. 😉 Us real fans have enjoyed it since the absolutely diabolically dull game against France.

I still remember that wonderful night at Uni drinking beer and watching the womens curling team win gold!

Realistically I won't be able to watch it as I'm up at 5:30am. I wish them well though!

If they make the final I'll really have to make some effort

And if they don't, the 3rd place play-off is a much more realistic 9pm BST. 😀

julian dicks is new assistant manager at West ham. Good to see them move away from the overly physical direct approach that they played under Big fat Sam

West Ham showed last year they're more than capable of not relying on anti-football tactics to win games. For a while at least.

There are some things that just have to happen in FPL.
        Sunderland have DGW
        Hazard scoring dodgy penalty
        Silva and Aguero getting injured
        Ivan scoring GW1
Arsenal starting off great then a slump then good finish to season

      Yep.

He left Bolton and hey presto, 5 years later they were relegated.

He left Newcastle and 18 months later they were relegated (Joe Kinnear being placed in charge is an irrelevance of course)

He left Blackpool and 4 years later they were relegated.

He left Notts County and 5 years later they were relegated.
