634x258 Great Expectations

Danny Rose’s prospects looked bleak at the start of the 2014/15 Premier League season. Much to the delight of Tottenham’s fan base, Swansea left-back Ben Davies arrived midway through the summer transfer window, with the logical assumption that he would usurp his underwhelming counterpart in due course. That didn’t transpire, however, and – aside from a brief spell in the second quarter of the campaign – Davies was restricted to bench duty.

Under the tutelage of Mauricio Pochettino – who’s culturing a reputation for transforming young full-backs into accomplished defenders – Rose began to display greater positional discipline while offering an ever-present outlet on the wings. Although he never developed into a Fantasy favourite due to Tottenham’s obliging back line, an improvement on that front next term would greatly enchance Rose’s standing.

Key Factors

  • Notwithstanding Tottenham’s awful defensive record last season (they conceded the third-most goals of any league side and registered just nine clean sheets), Rose posted the highest Fantasy score (103) of his career. Having never tallied more than a solitary goal in a season before, the former Leeds academy product chalked up three last term – a haul that was only bettered by four other defenders. Furthermore, his minutes per goal average (829) ranked seventh among those defenders that clocked up more than 1000 minutes. In terms of his creative output, Rose’s assist tally (five) was only bested by Leighton Baines (nine), Daryl Janmaat (eight) and Branislav Ivanovic (six), illustrating his evolution as a Fantasy asset under Pochettino.

  • The fact that Rose directly contributed to eight goals last season offers promise that the previously maligned left-back can develop into a top pick in his price bracket. A paucity of shut-outs (six) and bonus points (ten) ultimately limited his overall output, which is subsequently expected to keep him around the 5.0 mark when the player price lists are rolled out. Considering that West Bromwich Albion and Southampton’s prime defenders could be in line for a price rise off the back of their strong seasons, Rose could offer a great alternative to those second-tier gems.

  • The Lilywhites closed out the 2014/15 campaign with back-to-back clean sheets – the first time they’d achieved that feat since Gameweeks 1-2. This display of defensive resolve began just two days after Pochettino spoke of his mission to tighten up Tottenham’s rearguard and improve the balance of the side. The Argentinian boss led Saints to 14 shut-outs in his one and only season at St Mary’s Stadium, suggesting he’s well versed in the principles that underpin a solid defence. Handed the luxury of a full transfer window to recruit players that suit his high-pressure system, there’s hope he can batten down the hatches at White Hart Lane and improve the prospects of Spurs’ defensive starters, with the acquisition of Kieran Trippier and Kevin Wimmer and possible arrival of Toby Alderweireld a sign that Spurs may be a decent prospect next time out.

  • Pochettino’s favoured 4-2-3-1 set-up relies upon pacy, hard-working full-backs to provide the width in the absence of traditional wingers – a challenge that Rose appears to have accepted with aplomb. Both the eye test and Rose’s underlying statistics reveal that he’s been granted greater license to maraud down the left flank in 2014/15; his minutes per shot improved from 132.3 to 103.7, while his minutes per chance created also stepped up from 124 to 92.2 under Pochettino. Moreover, the Doncaster-born left-back ranked eighth for defenders in terms of total shots (24) and tenth with regard to key passes (27), demonstrating his potential for attacking returns.

  • Having seen off the challenge of Ben Davies in the second half of last term, Rose claims a strong grip on Tottenham’s left-back berth. His dramatic upturn in form has reportedly courted interest from Premier League giants Manchester City and Chelsea, while Pochettino’s praise certainly suggests that Rose has his backing for the campaign ahead:

“Danny has been the best English left-back this season. I look at the stats and other players in his position. I also look at his performances, which have been great. But that’s my opinion. The final decision will be Roy Hodgson’s. The experience with Luke Shaw last season was fantastic. But now he’s in another context and at another club. You have to realise that players change every year. Every year is different as things happen in our lives. I am not his manager and it is difficult to speak about players at other clubs. I can only explain my experience with him. It is important to give opportunities to young players if they have talent. We provide them with training and push them. After that it’s up to the player. All players all need to feel confidence from the staff, players and supporters.”

Not missing anything, I guess it makes sense to get a lot of the things that piled on later in registration and took down so many servers to be done during this phase. And as well with so much transfer movement it wouldn't make sense to spend the time coding Benteke into Villa's squad...

Out of interest, for people doing cheap keeper and defender rotations, is anyone doubling up? I.e. taking in say Norwich keeper and defender and Bournemouth keeper and defender? Or is everyone looking at two different rotations?

My first thought was the WBA/BOU gk combo which has an excellent rot.

Then I saw that excellent article that suggested both WBA gks would work really well too. Hopefully at 9.5 total cost.

No doubling up for me, especially at the start as we don't know which teams are going to strong defensively, especially from Mid/Low price bracket

I'm a fan of doubling up but not with the cheapos from the start. Maybe at later stages when fixtures and/or form favour them.

However, I think there's a possibility to double up the likes of SOT, WBA or STO if they turn out to be rock solid.

      1. Zombie
        • 12 Years

I think SOT defense won't be the same. To be honest, it wasn't strong in last 6-7 GWs of the last season as well

Could be. And now Berty's out for surgery..

But then Fonte is still there, a very solid player imo. Remember Rorster was out in the last 6-7 GWs.

I think this will be a season with a ton of keeper transfers, because I think this may be the highest goal scoring season in history with so many of the teams coming up looking strong; and being aggressive in the transfer market...Shaquiri going to Stoke..? Really..

I´m looking hard at the Bournemouth keeper Norwich defender, or vice versa might be the way forward.

Yeah I agree with you. Someone posted an article/hot topic on the correlation between goals scored in the championship and first season in epl which predicted all three promoted teams would get 28 plus goals. Since more of the cs come against the bottom three teams this could lead to a lot less clean sheets this year compared to previous years.

I'm defo going with the cheapo defender tactic this year after flirting with the double Chelsea def the last two seasons (with no great success).

We have to wait to see if Arsenal buy a midfielder, I think Ozil and, when fit, Sanchez, will be the only nailed on options, so many may go for Walcott as he is usually higher reward. Not decided whether I will yet though, I may go with Ozil.

Yeah, so many options from our attack. Rambo will be as attacking and clinical as ever, but I can see him losing lots of minutes to Wilshere this season.

Hopefully the Community Shield will shed some light on the subject

Walcott is always high risk high reward, though I'd be pretty sure he'll play with no Sanchez, otherwise the Arsenal attack would be very one dimensional.

Not that big issue. Just save some $ itb for Sanchez, or take a hit (it's Sanchez, sure'y he'll be worh it). If Walcott hits the stride in a starting role, surely Wenger will struggle to drop him.

Probably the right way to go. Will have to wait and see. Giroud at around 8.5m would seriously be tempting.

Question to an ARS fan. Is this Walcott up front thing really a thing? Last game(?) of the season he played there. Was this not as Giroud was rested for the cup final?

Is this a real thing or a thing that has become a thing just on these boards as people really really want it to happen?

Theo played up front against West Brom, and started the cup final up front also.

He has always wanted to be a striker, and Wenger seems to finally be willing to give him a chance there. (although it could be contract negotiation)

We can't really play Sanchez left and Theo right, so Theo will have to start up front to get in the team, imo.

They both play too advanced. They're both like second strikers, so playing both would leave us horribly exposed.

It's one of the reasons Wenger was so reluctant to play Theo, other than easy home games.

Sanchez dropped deeper to cover more when welbeck was playing right and Ozil came back from injury. I think both could play due to Sanchez work ethic and willingness to sacrifice for the team.

Welbeck provides a lot more cover than Theo ever has though, and I'm not convinced anyone would be all too successful in trying to restrain Alexis' attacking instincts.

I have a bit of a man crush on rambo. He keeps improving every season and for me is the most complete attacking central midfielder in the epl. (Not quite as good creatively as silva or ozil but better defensively and shooting wise).

He's certainly more rounded than Wilshere and Caz, but I'd play Cazorla centrally over him because he is better at that roles primary position.

And I hate Ramsey on the right full stop. I hated him there a few years ago, and I hated him there during our win streak. I really think that if we want to go the route of another midfielder wide, that WIlshere is much better suited.

Yeah I'd agree with you there I guess. Nit sure I'd have can over rambo though. You have enough creativity with ozil but rambo seems to lack the discipline to know when to hold and when to go forward when he is playing can position. Maybe he might have improved that side of his game this season?

Maybe, although I always wonder whether that is him being naive tactically, or whether he is fulfilling Wenger brief.

Either way, even though I wouldn't pick him for my 1st XI, he is a wonderful player, and will get loads of game time. 😀

So Ozil played the WC final on July 13 and then played on Aug 23 (GW2). That is 40 days gap.

By this measurement, Sanchez is still in line for GW2, and since he is Sanchez, probably starting GW1 to troll all of us who leave him out. Just saying.

I won't be getting Sanchez this season unless he is playing up front in a 442 formation. His output seriously declined when ozil came back from injury as he seemed to work a lot deeper to win possession. This may just have been a natural decline in form after a long physical season which he wouldn't have been used to but ì think it was defo more to do with ozil and others coming into the team meaning he saw less of the ball and had to work more tracking back

Just had a mare mate, 8gw ranks over 2m and something like 17gw ranks over 1.5m (the cut off point for an unlucky gw in my book). Just couldn't seem to get a decent run going with my captain almost a permafail.

I guess we'll get to see this season. I didn't see it coming tbh it just kind if happened. I was sitting pretty around 35k by gw18 but a lot of things went against me with Costa getting injured being one of the biggest (as so many were able to get a nicely balanced team with the extra money freed up).

Costa to kane really made it almost impossible to make ground unless it was through captaincy. I'm hoping a more normal ge state next season will allow me to get back into the top 10k again

Very possibly but if he is he will be a serious rotatarisk unfortunately as giroud will defo get plenty of games too. Unless Wenger goes 442 (like he did for a spell last season when their form turned around completely and Sanchez went nuts as the second striker.

He said at the time he went 442 to tighten up in defence but they scored lots too.

I think Saints would move to snap him up if it looks that way. I've seen him tentatively linked with a couple of clubs but nothing very concrete. Plus he's played with Koeman before and they have a very good relationship by all accounts. Clasie would apparently be keen to play for Koeman again.

Come to think of it maybe Wenger wants to keep Coq as first choice as he sees potential and he may turn out to be a great CDM in the future. If he signs Morgan, Coq will rarely get any gametime and that means he won't develop/might want to leave. Maybe he trusts Coq.

You say that, but he was forever taking him off and having Caz/Ramsey in the pivot because of his limitations on the ball.

Yeah but he started most of the games when fit anyway. Taking him off as the game requires is understandable. Wenger might want to develop that aspect of Coq's game as well.

But he can play both against big teams. with just one Coquelin or Schneiderlin alongside, say, Cazorla, they'll get torn apart in Europe again.

Arsenal need quality in depth, that's something Wenger seems to have realised in attacking midfield. One of Cazorla, Ramsey, Wilshere or Walcott is likely to be on the bench at all times, so why can't he do that at DM? It's all well and good trusting Coquelin, but you can't trust him not to pick up an injury or suspension. What's he going to do if he gets a red card or injury the week before a game against Man City or Bayern Munich, play Arteta?

He needs a backup at DM sure, but what I'm saying is that maybe Wenger thinks Coq will turn out to be better than Schneiderlin if he gets regular game time. So he might want someone to sit on the bench, instead of making Coq sit on the bench. That's where the backup comes in when Coq's not available.

Buying Schneiderlin means that Coq will sit most of the games out with the exception of some games where two DMs are needed. Maybe Wenger doesn't want that. Maybe he wants Coq to play regularly so he can improve his game.

Yes I guess I can see where he's coming from, and I have said before that this is only madness if Wenger has no backup plan. If he has someone else to come in as cover then that's a different story.

In short, Wenger probably doesn't want to buy Morgan or any other 20+mil defensive midfielder (who will be a definite starter) because it will result in Coq becoming the second choice. If we play both, it will destroy the structure of the team. And we don't face Barca, Real or Bayern every month.

we just need a proper back up for Coq.

We really liked Croatia. As far as cities go Zagreb was nice and Zadar was really great, from there we went to the island of Dugi Otok and stayed at Bosava, it was pretty quiet there. We didn't go to Hvar as that is the party island and we'd had enough parties recently. We didn't spend long in Split but it also seemed nice.

The island of Brac was also really nice, we stayed in Bol there, which is where the main beach of Zlatni Rat is. It is the main picture postcard location of Croatia, but it does get busy and it is a shingle/stone beach. We really liked it though.

Definitely. You can have overkill and end up wanting about 10 different things to happen in games due to varied fantasy teamsters you FPL and Sky for me. I find it gives a good mix of set and forget and minor mid game tweaking.

If that was the case, I think Koeman, who is a very open interviewee, wouldn't have sounded so confident/hopeful when interviewed yesterday afternoon. He may have had a medical but I expect this to be drawn out a while longer. I think he's caught in limbo.

After a long run of bad managers (except for Redknapp, who was duly sacked after a long CL run and unearthing a rare gem), plus building a new stadium to keep up with rivals yet the planned capacity still won't allow that as its 10k smaller.

Spurs have done nothing wrong. They tried to buy a player in the correct way, by contacting the club that owns him. Any disagreement between Saints and AM has nothing to do with them.

Well actually it does because it means Atletico aren't legally allowed to sell him. So it has everything to do with them. If there was anything unfinished between Spurs and AM before this all came out, I wouldn't expect it to be completed.

No but if athletico decide to sell to tottenham, and the player wants to go, how's it their fault? The illegal action is AM selling not Spurs buying

Spurs buying and Atletico selling is the same act. You cannot have one without the other. You can spin it however you like but the act is a breach of contract. If AM can put the brakes on, I believe they will. Otherwise 'selling' Toby could cost them money.

Also, Toby is apparently open to both clubs, just we hadn't negotiated with Atletico because we believed to have an agreement already in place.

I wonder whether any compensation entitled to Southampton is less than the money Atletico will make from selling Toby to Spurs

I'm not sure. But the 1.5m buyout clause on the contract, which I believe was the one Atletico aimed to trigger, would presumably be factored in.

Spurs need Toby. I believe they will up their bid to make this the case if it isn't already

The price is irrelevant. Atletico missed the deadline to sell on the open market. They are now contractually bound to sell to Southampton for 6.7m, regardless of how much Spurs bid.

Since Spurs have been alerted to the legal hazard, anything from this point on is done against what is legal. Knowingly receiving stolen goods is a crime. While this is certainly not as serious, it follows a similar moral pattern so I see it as being wrong.

Just because this keeps appearing: Bild did NOT report that Bayern Munich were ready to swap Müller and Robben for Di Maria.

The Twitter account is a fake - there is no such Bild journalist as Uli Becker. I've no idea why the BBC and the Telegraph have fallen for this (or why people keep copying and pasting transfer rumours here, but that's a separate issue).

Zlatan Ibrahimovic could be the next big-name arrival at Real Madrid, reports Sport.

Real Madrid have just one out-and-out striker, Karim Benzema, on their books after the end of Javier Hernandez’s loan spell at the club and recent reports have suggested that hew coach Rafa Benitez wants to bring in another No.9.

Juve hitman Fernando Llorente has been mooted as a target but according to Sport, former Barcelona and current PSG forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic has emerged on their radar. Florentino Perez, the Real Madrid president, held a meeting with PSG’s owners at the weekend and it is believed he brought up the name of the Sweden international.

Ibrahimovic, who is also wanted by AC Milan, is inside the final year of his contract in the French capital and Ramon Calderon, who was Perez’s predecessor as Madrid president, believes the deal could happen.

He tweeted: “Ibrahimovic finishes his contract next year and is a great player with a huge pull at the Bernabeu. [There are] many chances of it happening.”
