Scout Notes – Pre-Season Round Up – Friday

Rickie Lambert scores twice on his debut as West Brom put four past Bristol Rovers. James Chester is deployed at right-back on his first start for the Baggies. Watford fall to a 1-0 defeat in their final summer friendly, whilst goals from Tokelo Rantie and Marc Pugh aren’t enough to stop Bournemouth from losing at home to Cardiff.

Bristol Rovers 0 West Bromwich Albion 4

Having penned a two-year deal with the Baggies just hours prior to kick-off, Rickie Lambert bagged a brace on his debut for the West Midlanders. The first was a fortuitous deflected effort, while the second was a neat finish from a James McClean cross. Craig Gardener and Victor Anichebe rounded off the scoring for the visitors.

Tony Pulis deployed his troops in a 4-4-2 set-up, with Boaz Myhill in goal, James Chester at right-back, fit-again Craig Dawson and Jonas Olsson in the heart of defence, and Chris Brunt at left-back. A midfield four comprised of Gardner, Claudio Yacob, James Morrison and McClean supplied the ammunition for strike pairing Saido Berahino and Lambert. Pulis made eight changes over the course of the second period, with the likes of Anichebe, Brown Ideye, Darren Fletcher, Stephane Sessegnon and Callum McManaman earning minutes off the bench.

Pulis talked up Lambert’s influence after the final whistle, insisting that the veteran will have a key part to play, both on and off the pitch in the season to come:

“Rickie’s played at lower level and each time he’s stepped up he’s done well. He did exceptionally well at Southampton and probably feels he deserved more games at Liverpool. But it’s not just on the pitch that he will important, but off the pitch too. He’s a great lad and in Saido we have a wonderful talent, along with other youngsters we have. We hope the way Rickie conducts himself and how he acts will be good for him and our other young players. You cannot have enough role models. He’s been brought up through the lower leagues. When you get the chance to work down there you want to get the chance to claim everything you can – that ambition and drive remains and I hope we see the full benefits of that and I hope the other players do too.”

Bournemouth 2 Cardiff City 3

With a match against Hoffenheim to follow this evening, Eddie Howe fielded a mix of fringe players and first-team options as the Cherries’ relinquished a 1-0 lead at the Vitality Stadium. Tokelo Rantie kicked off the scoring by rounding the Cardiff keeper and slotting into a vacant net, while Marc Pugh fired home a driven finish to offer hope of a comeback in the final 20 minutes.

Charlie Daniels, Andrew Surman, Simon Francis and Sylvain Distin were the other notable inclusions in the starting XI, with the latter reportedly impressing in central defence. Yann Kermorgant was forced off on 35 minutes with a heel problem, Howe confirmed post-match.

Watford 0 Sevilla 1

Quique Sanchez Flores named a strong starting XI for the Hornets’ final pre-season friendly clash against Rojiblancos. Keeper Heurelho Gomes was protected by a back four of Allan Nyom, Sebastian Prodl, Craig Cathcart and Ikechi Anya, who took up the left-back berth. Sticking with his favoured 4-2-3-1 set-up, Etienne Capoue and Valon Behrami occupied the double pivot, while Miguel Layun, Ighalo and Steven Berghuis supported lone striker Troy Deeney.

Gabriele Angella, Ben Watson, Jose Holebas, Matej Vydra and Juan Carlos Paredes were afforded run-outs in the second 45, but Almen Abdi (knee) and Jose Manuel Jurado (muscular) sat out this encounter with minor knocks.

Taking stock after the defeat, Flores conceded that due to the influx of new players over the last couple of months, he is still no closer to knowing his likely starting XI for next weekend’s opener at Everton:

“I don’t know, we have one week more and it is difficult. We are incorporating players every week which is good news but that makes it difficult because we are then having to explain to the new players what we want from them in the system, the model and the way we want to play…Today we played a deeper defensive line in the first half and it was difficult to stop their players. In the second half we played with high pressure and a different style…We are trying to create a good balance between defence and attack. I wasn’t that happy with the football in the first half because after we won the ball we then rushed and we lost possession and the chance to build the play. I understand the players need to make mistakes in order to advance. So I am not very sad.”

After more tinkering, now have this lot.. Might get some stick for having Silva, but say what you want about him he has come good for me in the past and i.m.o worth the outlay.

    Ruddy... Rudd
    Huth... Azpi... Cedric... Francis... O'Shea
    Haz.. Silva... Ozil... Payet... Anya
    Giroud... Rooney... Wilson

(Considering Tadic or Chadli instead of Payet)

    Deeney, Rooney, Defoe

      (a) predict the liverpool team...think about who you're leaving out
      (b) look how many central midfielders arsenal have
      (c) think about a season without aguero, costa, kane, benteke, rooney, giroud...are you sure about your front three?
      (d) stoke couldn't get clean sheets with begovich in goal...they are an attacking team
      (e) there is no news on the "hennessy transfer"
      (f) how many clean sheets are you predicting for bournemouth?
      (g) o'shea is 34...sunderland have bought 2 central defenders

For those wondering about James CHESTER:

    West Bromwich Albion ‏@WBAFCofficial · 15 hrs15 hours ago
3' Albion 4-4-2 with Chester at RB, Dawson/Olsson CB, Brunt LB, Gardner RM, Yacob/Morrison CM, McClean LM, Berahino/Lambert attack #WBA

    The journo:
    bill howell ‏@billhowell68 · 15 hrs15 hours ago
Chester very advanced when #wba have the ball, which at the moment isn't very often

    The fan:
    Howard Martin ‏@HJMKent · 1 hr1 hour ago
All the justifiable praise for #Lambert last night has hidden a bit the fine debut James Chester made. He looks a very good buy! #WBA

    Another fan:
Liked what I saw of Chester too. Not sure right back is his ideal position but looked neat and tidy on the ball and defended well when he needed to. Another positive on the night and certainly looks a decent addition.

    And another:
Played well tonight at right back. Looks very comfortable on the ball.

    And another:
It seems with Pulis having a (strange is you ask me) penchant for playing centre halfs at full back, Chester will get lots of opportunities. Hull fans rate him and he is young and improves our defence.

I was at the Bournemouth game so here's a few observations:

-Federici looked good and distributed the ball well. I think he'll be first choice keeper.
-Francis was excellent at RB, got forward well and sent in a few decent crosses. Solid at the back.
-Distain looked very solid. I'd be surprised to see him oust Cook or Elphick in the 1st team but he's definitely pushing for a place.
-Cargill was the other CB and our brightest youngster (played in Eng U20s last season) but he was very poor. At fault for a couple of the goals.
-Daniels was OK but I don't think he's done enough to see off the competition from Mings for the 1st team berth.
-Pugh was OK and scored with an excellent finish but the other attackers struggled. Rantie faded in the 2nd half badly and still lacks confidence. Kermorgant looked like our best creative outlet but went off injured early - looked like a minor knock though. The other attackers who played were very much fringle players so don't expect them to feature in the league.

King's a really interesting one. If he gets in the team it'll be as a forward and he could get a lot of chances if we play a more counter-attacking style as I expect. One to watch for rather than pick at the start though, not currently in the first team.

Watch the Clichy news, Kolarov might get dropped at some point. Do you have a strategy to get Kun? Remainder looks fine

Jenkinson, so long as you don't need him to start Week 1. Still uncertainty at CB

Well I think Jenkinson, but I'm going Cresswell because he more flexible, plenty of 5.5 Def, that can be brought in.

Feeling really good about this one. Come on FFS, time to burst my bubble!

    Myhill - 4.0
    Azpi - Williams - Huth - Cameron - Bassong
    Hazard - Silva - Walcott - Mane - Anya
    Rooney - Pelle - Wilson

In playing 343 and planning the wildcard for week 9. Some explanations:

Goalkeepers: Myhill is one of the only options offering big save point potential with adequate CS potential. I'll wildcard by the time Foster returns. Marshall arriving might be a spanner in the works, and in that case I'll move to Butland.

Defenders: Chelsea will be doing a lot of bus parking in the first six weeks so I'm comfortable with Azpi. Williams and Huth is the best rotation I can find. Cameron/Bassong rotate reasonably well for a cheap price.

Mids: First three are blue chips with proven consistency when fit. Mane is a short term pick up for the first run, after which I'll downgrade him to free up Kun funds.

Forwards: Rooney has three good fix then out the door for Kun. Pelle has a great opening run, then I might drop him for whichever similar priced striker is doing well. Ditto for Wilson.

    Thoughts?

      Brom buying Marshall
      Cameron not nailed
Wilson an unknown at this level

      How's your bubble now? 🙂

        1. Mentioned that, will switch to Butland if it's a problem.
        2. Will switch to Muniesa it it's a problem.
        3. Yes, I know, and I'm willing to take the risk

Cameron not nailed by any stretch. Nice midfield and strikers but pretty weak defensively. Good effort though!

it's a decent team but I don't think your plans will work very well unless you're lucky:

      (a) so you're downgrading Mane to Ki-Sung-Yung to get Aguero meaning you only have 5 good attacking players?...it's not for me

      (b) anya might not play...ditto cameron...most likely they'll be rotated

      (c) every time one of your defenders is injured or left out your defensive rotation won't look so clever...and you've got lots of cash on the bench...it's a lot better to have 2 guys you can play every week and then spend £13.0m or £13.5m on the other 3...try to get 2 playable fixtures each week and then you've always got a reserve

Walcott has explosive potential, I'd go with him at least to start the season.

I personally prefer Ramsey a bit more than Ozil and both of them over Cazorla

      Ozil in number 10 role

Wally won't get you points if he doesn't start... easy to make the switch if he is starting each week

anybody currently on a Ritchie (as 5th mid)/ Deeney rotation, alternating between 3-5-2/3-4-3?

I don't like it. A lot of points will get benched

I'd never rotate MID or FWD personally, always liable for lots of bench points

Yes I have Ritchie in my midfield & Deeney as my third striker, Deeney this seasons Charlie Austin? Hopefully! Although Bournemouth's new forward looked half decent yesterday and cheaper

Anyone else fit Ivanovic in? It's a great way to fit Aguero in team later on without needing a wildcard.
