The Numbers Game – 2014/15 Review – West Ham

Our members articles analysing last season are completed today with a review of West Ham’s performances. The Hammers entered 2014/15 in reasonable health, having finished 13th in the Premier League in the previous campaign, although they only gained 40 points and did flirt with the relegation zone before finally confirming their top-flight status.

Plenty of changes were made in both playing and coaching personnel at Upton Park last summer, with forwards Enner Valencia and Diafra Sakho brought in, while Teddy Sheringham joined up as an attacking coach. Cheikhou Kouyate and Aaron Cresswell were also signed, while Carl Jenkinson and Alex Song moved to the Hammers on season-long loans.

In this members article, we asses the main goal threats and creators in Sam Allardyce’s final year at the helm and also compare the team’s attacking numbers to the previous year.

Not really. You are still ingesting the same amount of alcohol so no reason you should be more drunk.

I don't see the point of having Sakho if you're going to bench him really, if that's what your format is suggesting. I'd switch to 3-4-3. Other than that, the team isn't bad at all, lack of Hazard could be worrying to some.

Since west ham is playing arsenal i thought one of the defenders would have a better chance of getting more points. I thought long and hard about haz, and concluded that without him it creates a better balance and fab should get some points. Thx for the comment, its v helpful!

Which of these 3 would you take a chance on?

    1) Saylor. Decent probability that he is a starter. Crap team with crap fixtures though.
    2) Targett. You know exactly what you are going to get 2 games or 3 max.
    3) Joe Gomez. You don't even know the chances he will start or to what extent he will be rotated but if he can nail a place ahead of Moreno (a la Bellerin), he could be the bargain of the season.

Gomez for me is wait and see if he is playing, at worst may miss out couple of CS, but better than wasting transfer to get rid if you had to. Suppose it depends how soon you plan to play WC

Lots of talk on here about the lack of a 4.0 regular starter and many resorting to 3-way rotations at 4.5 and the like.

However, personally I think there's a real lack of good options at 4.5 too. The only nailed on 4.5's I can see play for promoted sides, Leicester (who have a new manager and were awful most of last season) and Palace (who have poor fixtures and are an attacking side).

As none of the above appeal to me, I think it's strange that many teams on here have at least 2 4.5 defenders.

My solution; 3 starting defenders (mine are Ivan, Skrtel and Cedric) and a couple of 4.0's. Saylor has played most of pre-season and imo is likely to start the season in the side, Targett is also first choice whilst Bertrand is unfit. Given most will play an early WC, it'll be easy to re-assess who's nailed on then.

    Any thoughts?

Would rather have 2 big hitters and a 3 way rotation.

      I can't afford that, so on 1 big hitter and 2 x 2 way.

I'm doing same as you. Only difference is bellerin for skrtel compared to your defence. Hopefully bellerin will be nailed down! Don't see value in the 4.5's at all, apart from Sunderland. Do you think ivan is a must over azpi??

Aside from our FPL teams anyone else on here do a large number of teams in other games? For the first season I've got a large number of teams in the telegraph (21) and I was just wondering how others set them up and manage the huge number of transfers you end up needing to do across the season?

So far I've kept all teams to a relatively tight group of players (5 gk 12 def 16 mids 8 strikers) basing most on west brom, chelsea and arsenal defences, nailed on defenders with maximum potential cs across the season to minimise transfers in that area. Thereafter only nailed on mids and attackers with 7 mids and 4 strikers making up the largest % of my teams.

If it helps I used to do loads on the sun
Would set up group of teams to be defence minded and group to be attack, then just make changes that suited that style , once deep into season just focus on ones who were doing well. Then focused rest on monthly prizes. Did still take ages

      1. John t penguin
        • 9 Years

Should say it was Scottish league so there was only hand full of teams you really picked from

      2. Pie-o-My
        • 10 Years
        8 years, 9 months ago

Ok. So the teams that fall by the wayside after a few months, let them go and then just blast the transfers on a monthly or weekly prize. I'll do that.

I've a good few teams heavy on defence 442 with 4 chelsea defenders/gk and a few 352 heavy in attack as they are based around the cheap west brom defence. My main strategy in the first few weeks was not to punt and make sure that as many teams as possible had a solid starts until form players etc could be identified.
