Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 1- Sunday

Goals from Cheikhou Kouyate and Mauro Zarate fire West Ham to victory at the Emirates as Theo Walcott is shifted to the bench. Liverpool get the better of Stoke at the Britannia thanks to a Philippe Coutinho long-range effort, Graziano Pelle maintains his pre-season form at St James’, as Magpies new boy Georginio Wijnaldum helps earn the hosts a point.

Walcott Benched as Gunners Falter

Theo Walcott’s omission from the starting line-up was the chief topic of discussion among Fantasy managers prior to kick-off. The Gunners winger sat third in our Captain Poll for Gameweek 1 but dropped to the bench, with Arsene Wenger favouring Olivier Giroud as the lone striker and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on the right flank. Even this early into the season, Walcott owners will be having second thoughts in light of yesterday’s teamsheet, with Alexis Sanchez returning earlier than expected to push for a start away to Palace next weekend.

Despite firing off more attempts at goal (21) than any other side over the weekend, Arsenal struggled to fashion many clear-cut chances against West Ham’s well regimented defence, with Giroud’s league-high tally for shots inside the box (five) somewhat belying his lack of threat. Given that Wenger previously said he’d rotate the Frenchman and Walcott depending on the nature of the opponent’s defence, the latter could well be afforded a start against Crystal Palace next Gameweek – the Eagles’ attacking instincts under Alan Pardew could expose their backline to Walcott’s pace.

Petr Cech turned out an uncharacteristically mistake-laden performance on his debut for the Gunners and was at fault for both goals. With three favourable matches (cpl, new, STO) in the next four, though, the 5.5-priced shot-stopper is unlikely to shed too many owners. The heavily-backed Hector Bellerin will need to be monitored after he missed out with a muscle injury.

Adrian Defiance Keeps Arsenal at Bay

Cheikhou Kouyate and Mauro Zarate (both 5.5) etched their names onto the scoresheet as Slaven Bilic’s troops bounced back from their Europa League exit in impressive style. Kouyate racked up a decent haul of attacking returns last season (four goals and three assists) but faces competition from the likes of Riyad Mahrez (brace against Sunderland) in his price bracket. Zarate, meanwhile, looks set for a run in the side after Enner Valencia was ruled out for up to three months, presenting us with an alternative to the likes of Callum Wilson and Troy Deeney in the third striker slot.

Reece Oxford – at the age of 16 years and 235 days – became the youngest player to don the Irons strip during the Premier League era. Classified as a defender by the Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Oxford (4.0) lined up in central midfield alongside Mark Noble and Kouyate. His out-of-position potential is sure to turn a few heads, yet Pedro Obiang – who returned to training earlier this week – could well displace the youngster when Leicester City visit the Boleyn Ground. Elsewhere at the back, Adrian earned 11 points in the FPL game, courtesy of six saves and maximum bonus.

Dimitri Payet operated in the hole behind Diafra Sakho and Zarate, delivering the cross for Kouyate’s opener. The 7.5-rated playmaker’s silky touch and surprising turn of pace could engender further attacking returns as West Ham embark on four excellent home clashes (LEI, BOU, NEW, NOR) in the next six Gameweeks, which means they are sure to attract attention at both ends of the pitch.

Coutinho Stunner Steals it for Liverpool

In an otherwise insipid affair, Philippe Coutinho’s moment of class – a trademark long-range effort – consigned Stoke City to defeat four minutes from time. The Brazilian playmaker was comfortably the Reds’ most potent threat, fashioning more shots (three) than the rest of their midfield combined. At 8.0 in FPL, Coutinho sets us back 1.0 more than both Jordan Henderson and James Milner (7.0) but could certainly emerge as the prime pick this term if he’s more ruthless with his finishing.

Left-back Joe Gomez posted an 11-point haul by virtue of an assist, clean sheet and three bonus points. Priced at 4.5, the former Charlton defender is sure to receive a significant boost on his 4.5% ownership, despite the fact he’s a rotation risk with Alberto Moreno waiting in the wings. If Gomez can nail down that starting berth, he could be employed in a budget rotation strategy that exploits Liverpool’s favourable upcoming home ties (BOU, WHU, NOR, AVL) while circumventing their tricky road fixtures (ars, mun, eve, tot).

Christian Benteke fed off scraps on his debut, managing just one attempt at goal throughout the 90. Nonetheless, his 42.6% ownership will have no qualms about retaining the Belgian’s services, given that those above-mentioned four home fixtures take place over the next six Gameweeks.

Pelle Amongst the Goals Again

Graziano Pelle opened the scoring at St James’ Park with a free header, before Shane Long nodded in an equaliser in the 79th minute. Saints’ excellent raft of upcoming matches (EVE, wat, NOR, wba) should encourage Pelle’s 16.4% ownership to back the Italian frontman during that stretch, bearing in mind he’d already notched seven times over the pre-season schedule.

Although he spurned two good chances to seal the victory in injury time, Sadio Mane’s knack for engineering goalscoring opportunities bodes well for the coming weeks. Similarly, Dusan Tadic (7.0) – one of our three Differentials this Gameweek – served up the joint-most chances of any midfielder (six) this weekend, underlining his assist potential.

Cedric Soares looks a fine replacement for the departed Nathaniel Clyne from a Fantasy perspective, with the Portuguese right-back’s rampaging runs giving rise to the cross for Pelle’s goal. Having picked up a yellow card in the first half, though, Soares was replaced by Cuco Martina in the second period to avert the risk of being sent off. Elsewhere in defence, Maya Yoshida was selected ahead of Steven Caulker alongside Jose Fonte and, at 4.5, appears to be in the driving seat for a first-team place if Ronald Koeman fails to add to his options over the remainder of the transfer window.

Jay Rodriquez (7.0) made his long-awaited return to Premier League action on the left wing of a 4-2-3-1 set-up. The English winger tallied 15 goals and three assists in the 2013/14 campaign but will clearly need time to get back up to speed – he was handed just over an hour by Koeman, though Long will be looking for a start next weekend after emerging from the bench to grab the equaliser.

Wijnaldum Opens Magpies Account

Georginio Wijnaldum (7.0) and Papiss Cisse (6.5) got off the mark as Steve McClaren kicked off his tenure with a deserved point. Wijnaldum provided a much-needed goal threat from midfield in the number ten berth, notching two shots inside the box. Cisse, meanwhile, could be a steal in the mid-priced forward bracket if he can replicate his explosive scoring of last season that saw him chalk up 11 goals in just 1,158 minutes. With six tough fixtures in the next seven, though (swa, mun, ARS, whm, CHE, mci) few will be looking at the Tyneside team until the Gameweek 9 mark.

McClaren’s decision to hand Fabricio Coloccini and Chancel Mbemba starting roles at centre-half despite a lack of pre-season minutes looks to have put paid to Steven Taylor’s chances of emerging as a valid option in the 4.0 defender bracket.

The impressive Vurnon Anita had to be substituted in the 68th minute after taking a heavy fall. McClaren revealed after the match that the Dutchman’s injury is not as bad as first feared, with a medical assessment forthcoming at the start of the week.

Here is a lesson my dad told me. My dad was in the top 10 of the world for the first half of the season.

"If you score hardly any points on the first gameweek, and you have a team where all the players are consistent, and you don't know why they are under performing, then just keep your team, don't make any transfers and see how it goes. If you do badly again, then you have 2 free transfers to use

and do not get -4 points. You will be surprised at how many minus points you will get if you add them up at the end of the season, and you got those minus points just because someone got 15 points on gamweek 1, you get them and then they will probably flop if they are a cheap buy.

If you are still doing badly, then maybe think about your wildcard.

So the lesson is, if you have players which are consistent, just keep them and see how they play.
And only get a few punty players."

Scout Pick Community Champion Lottery – Gameweek 2

This season we have revamped how we involve the community in our Scout Picks. Once again we are on the look out for a champion to represent the community to take on the Scout Picks and win the chance of a prize.

The big difference this year is the launch of the Scout Pick Champion Lottery. If you want to take part please fill in this form http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/cup/7/entry/ by 2pm tomorrow.

The champion will then be selected at random tomorrow and then be asked to submit their XI by Thursday 3pm by emailing me at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk

We only need 11 picks and please be mindful of the 82.5m budget. There’s no captain in the picks either and please stick to a designated FPL formation, including no more than three players from one team. No captain or chips will be applied.

At the end of the season the champion who beats the picks by the highest margin will win a £100 Amazon voucher.

Champions will not be able to be selected as a champion for a second time. The champion will be revealed in a new midweek Scout Picks article on Wednesday, which will outline out initial thinking around the picks. Our and the champions picks will be revealed as usual the day before the first match of the Gameweek.

Should the community “Champion” fail to provide an initial or final Scout Pick selection, then an “Assistant Manager” chosen by us, will gain control of the selection to represent the community for the Gameweek in question.

I don't want to end up entering more than one time, I'm sure that'll get me disqualified.

What are your thoughts on Ivanovic? I wasn't convinced by him at all, he looked slow and a bit tired, which worries me a lot. Thinking of either doing Ivanovic --> Clyne/Gomez to free up some cash. What's your opinion on him and his performance?

I think over the course, hes gonna rack up the 140. Early on? Chelsea just don't look great right now both end of pre season and first game.

Clyne is going to play every game he can so is a good like-for-like. Gomez I just don't know, young and spritely but Rodgers always throws in a spanner and changes wingbacks up a lot, yet not sure what his choices are going to be like after only the one game.

Based on the options, personally I'd say you'll find a sure bet of points in an already in form Clyne.

Not really playing wing backs this season, will be 4 at the back nearly every game I reckon.

Can't see Gomez losing his place to Moreno any time soon.

OK, just a basic piece of information...

Chelsea began pre-season a week later than most other teams. Mourinho wanted them to have a proper holiday and thinks that will benefit them later on.

Swansea began pre-season a week earlier than most others. Monk wanted to make a big effort on fitness and to put a new training system in place ahead of tough early games.

The result of that is that Swansea were 2 weeks ahead of Chelsea in terms of preparation last weekend and that makes quite a difference early season. The time to assess Chelsea will be after three or four weeks.

Ivanovic was troubled in a way that he usually isn't. But Montero is very quick indeed and putting that together with the above I wouldn't draw conclusions from it.

        Hey Ruth,

Hope you had a good summer.

I read your post about Walcott not starting and so on, but I have him in my team due to the fact that he has just signed a reported 130k per week contract for 4 years. Surely the only reason he would sign is if he was set to start most week? And surely Wenger would not have a player on that much dosh who was warming the bench? Or am I wrong?

I want to try and limit to the one transfer. My bench is 0 pointers (real terrible choices here I know). My gut is get in a keeper, or stay true to Cech (who will still surely play 1st, and is likely to have a good season), and instead get in a better defender?

    Cédric Soares>Bertrand/Baker

Or wait out for two transfers in GW3?

Ive got defenders there who are playing, my entire 1st team should play again.

            Wait a short while?

I'm thinking I'll wait out for GW3 for transfers right now as all my 1st team should still play.

But if I do this.. the big question will be, WHO WILL BE CAPTAIN?

Dare I risk Walcott again? 😛

I have Benteke, so yeah its going to have to be that playing at anfield. Benteke's ready for goals just hasn't been provided just yet, and with an easy to open Bournemouth hopefully in for a stormer.

    A) Aguero and Ozil/Walcott
    B) Rooney and Sanchez

I asked this question yesterday and got a resounding A! I'm really not sure if it's that clear cut an answer! Let's think it through for a minute, Sanchez is ridiculously good and is the only Arsenal player worth having as I see it! Never gets dropped, always plays in a threatening position and plays well home and away! Ozil and Wally on the other hand arent worth their price tags IMO! As for Rooney and Aguero, obviously Aguero is the best player on the game, a player you can have as your captain week in week out and finish top of your ML without much more help from your other squad members. But think it through, do people honestly believe Rooney will struggle in comparison playing up top on his own all season and is a LOT less injury prone. This allows you to use transfers elsewhere each week rather than bringing Serg in and then taking him back out!

I am swaying towards B to be honest, the only down side is I have no Citizens in my squad! However if he starts to be a regular, Kolerov isn't a bad shout!

Surely 2 good players are better than 1!

Rooney is on his 'on' season based off history of being on form every other season so I think he'll reach 15 now he is lone striker for the most part.

I agree with OP Rooney rarely gets injured as of late. But also Aguero when he gets back to full fitness will be firing them off.

Maybe when Aguero is back I'd consider Rooney & Aguero then take some hits in the midfield! 😛
Walcott's play time is gonna be split between him and Giroud in two different attacking styles, seems how Wenger is playing it. Sanchez could be in for an epic season being truly magnifique but we just gotta wait to see it.

        SOOO on the options, B.

The Rough with the Smooth – looking for your Gameweek 1 tales of joy and woe.

We are looking for your input for our regular community article and Scoutcast feature. Called The Rough with the Smooth we want to hear about exceptional moves of success or failure for the Gameweek.

So to get this rolling I’m looking for a few words from you about a particular move or set of moves you made in Gameweek 1 that led to incredible success or failure.

For those interested please email me your tale of woe or jubilation at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk by the deadline of 10am tomorrow (Tues) or leave your answers below.

We are looking for short answers to the following
    1. What was your move of success or failure?
    2. What effect did it have on your rank?
    3. What have you learned from the move?

Particularly looking for any Mahrez captainers (liker FFscout's Andy) or Courtois triple captainers.

Doubt you'll find a Courtois (3c) - anyone who did that will not yet have emerged from their pit of despair.

Benching Gomez and picking/captaining Walcott stung me this week but in such a low scoring GW that doesn't do too much damage, I'm sure there'll be some much rougher examples along any minute...

The only people likely to captain Courtois would be those who left their captaincy and vice-captaincy on their auto-select centre forward and goalkeeper and then found that their centre forward did not play.

Casuals and noobs who do that will not even realise that the triple captain chip exists.

      1) Captain Hazard. Removed Darmian for Mert. Plumped for Ritchie over Mahrez. Don't like my Ozil and Milner picks having watched them play. Only point scorers were Rooney and Pelle
      2) 1.5m
      3) I think GW1 is a lot of luck. Picking my initial squad is one of the least favourite parts of FPL for me. I think I'm much better at evolving my team over time and doing the right transfers at the right time. I think this is confirmed by how little I seem to improve whenever I play my WC. Just a challenge to climb up the rankings now.

      Here's FFSCout's Andy's for the Smooth section.

He captained Mahrez. Has Richards 8 points coming off the bench for his non playing Mings. Also has Vardy PLUS has Aguero and Kolorov still to play.

So far he's on 55 and can expect a significant boost to his rank of 40K thanks to his bench points and MCI players.

      2. 46.000 or there about with Kolarov to play.
      3. The Mahrez move was definitely thanks to this site. I'd tinkered a million times with my team before settling for my current one and this is the first time I had Mahrez in it.

One of the players in the Premier Chess mini-league scored zero points every game-week last season.

Dropped Azpi for Bellerin last minute. Azpi got an assist and 2 BPS, while Bellerin didn't make the bench for Arsenal. Worst thing is that meant Coates is coming off my bench for -1 :(.

      1. Marhez happy days week saver, Walcott not so...Walcott to X for Kun in GW3 now looks likely barring a big GW2 showing but think I can save FT.
      2. 150k - will take that but will drop a lot after tonight.
      3. Stick with starters - Theo was really the only gamble in side and tbh he still had 30 minutes versus a tiring Hammers side. Wish I had stuck with Sterling and had something to be interested in tonight - nothing worse than watching a match wanting a 1-1 with unpopular scorers...

I have plenty of woe... but I can't point to a bad decision that led to it. Just one of those weeks where the attackers blank and the defenders all concede. Plenty of decisions can seem wrong in hindsight (doubling up on Arsenal mids, captaining Hazard, benching Joe Gomes), but all of them seem sound even now. Small comfort with a rank of 1.9m, all out.

Maybe my main error was being content with my team even after it had so much in common with the scout picks. #kissofdeath 😉

All of the failure. Not off to a good start...

      1. Cap'n Hazard even after looking rubbish against Arsenal Last week. Went for Walcott over coutinho. Wanted to pick cabaye but went Ritchie instead to free up funds for Walcott. Benched Richards so he didn't conflict with Ritchie. It's upsetting writing it all down...
      2. About 900k with Sterling to go
      3. Only pick nailed on players

Ah well, green arrows should be easy next week!

      1. Smooth : I got rid of Wilson & Iva for Pellè & Azpi on Friday. Rough: I decided to double up on Arsenal midfield on the same day instead of keeping Sterling (could still turn OK if he stays quiet tonight)
      2. Currently 700'000th, but no players left to play.
      3. In hindsight, doubling up on Arsenal was stupid. Too many options, inconsistency and rotation risk. Exception: maybe double up again, once Sanchez is fully fit.

After I heared that Aguero is fit from Jack Wain (Wain's Wonder), I immedietly decided that I have to accomodate him in my team.

But having him, Rooney and Hazard in the same team was a tough task, as you all know.

So these are the moves I made an hour before deadline (arranged in decreasing order of the success they yielded).. 😀 😀

      2) Ivanovic > Azpilicueta
      3) Koscielny > Cedric

Currently leading in 4 mini-leagues, and 5th in Last Man Standing, but the situation might look rather different after tonight's match if some of the Man City or West Brom players owned by my rivals get big scores.

One of my late changes (bringing in Marc Albrighton) worked out well, but another (replacing Azpilicueta by Koscielny) less so. And, as for most of us, Hazard(C) was a captaincy fail.

Only once have I had a better GW1 - in 2010-11, also boosted by a double digit return from Marc Albrighton.

      1. Failure. Gomez (11) as third sub, with Coates (-1) coming in for Bellerin who didn't play. Walcott (c) was also a complete disaster. 25 points all out and feelings of worthlessness.

      2. Pretty sure I'll be under 2 mil by tonight, my worst rank in my 8 years of playing

      3. Why waste a whole summer tinkering when friends who made their team Saturday morning have got more points. Then again, I won't learn from this, I'm far too obsessed!

I don't think there's an individual failure on my part. But I think my most regrettable error was absolutely ripping it out of my mate Saturday lunchtime who had doubled up on villa defence, taken an absolute punt on gomez, and opted for a midfield of coutinho and marhez over any arsenal coverage whatsoever.

He has more then double my points. And the rest of this team is actually decent (and obviously did nothing!)

Saturday morning I browsed the members section and saw that Mahrez had a similar number of shots on target to Mane and Siggy. His overall stats were impressive too. So last minute, I did Chadli/Milner->Mahrez/Mane. Nice pts swing 🙂

      1. My move of failure was that when Cabaye signed for Crystal Palace, i knew he would be FPL gold (even game me an idea for a puntastic team name in 'Yippee Cabaye MF') but then i looked at the fixtures & decided to play safe & bam scores 10 points on opening day.
      2. My rank would have been around 200k instead of 1 million if i had gone with him
      3. What i have learned is that "Always trust your gut, well at least for Gameweek 1"

Picked Cedric and Henderson over Mahrez and Richards who I benched.
      Captain Walcott.
I have learnt to go with gut instinct and not to take so much notice of the stats.

Ulloa tinkered with by the tinkerman

    A. Ulloa to Defoe/Vardy

    Or

    B. Ritchie to Mahrez, Ulloa to Sakho for -4

      Ulloa blanked me also.

      I'm thinking

      A. Ulloa to Vardy

Leicester are in good form and still have good fixtures ahead

Nope. Good start but the fixtures are still too unpleasant to tempt me.

I'm only considering one change for my team. Would you do Baker to Oxford, or just save the FT?

What do I do with O'Shea? Will he even play? If not, I really need to swap him out for someone, I'm thinking Gomez, would that work?

Would you play AOA if you had to bench Mahrez?

my attackers look like : Hazard - Sterling - Walcott - Henderson - Mahrez
    Rooney - Pelle - Deeney

    yes or no?
