It’s fair to say we’ve plenty of topics to discuss after an eventful Gameweek 6 came to its conclusion on Sunday. Eden Hazard’s return to form, Liverpool’s new formation, David Silva’s injury worries and Anthony Martial’s impact on United’s attack are all amongst the topics to make our Monday Gameweek retrospective.

There’s a spring in Hazard’s step again…
At long last, the Chelsea winger is off the mark after bagging his first goal of the season in the weekend win over Arsenal. After serving up just a single assist in the first five Gameweeks, Hazard has been sold by over 818,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers as former owners look for better value. Now down to 11.3 in FPL, his first double-figure haul of the campaign offers a perfect reminder of his points potential as the Blues prepare for a fine run of fixtures.

…So Sanchez needs to produce soon…
With Hazard struggling, many had turned to the Arsenal wide man as their premium midfielder of choice due to his strong underlying statistics. Whilst Sanchez continues to serve up eye-catching numbers, his lack of end product is a growing concern at a time where the fixtures start to turn against the Gunners. Sanchez is likely to be afforded a reprieve for next week’s trip to Leicester’s porous defence but with the schedule tightening from Gameweek 8, a switch to Hazard could be on the cards.

Zouma is a factor as Terry’s stock plummets…
It’s four straight starts now for the youngster, who appears to have secured himself a regular role in the heart of Jose Mourinho’s defence. Since replacing John Terry at the break in Gameweek 2, Zouma has played every minute and strengthened his claim for consideration by racking up 15 points against the Gunners. Terry – who had played every minutes of last season – continues to be alternated with Gary Cahill as Jose Mourinho looks to rest his skipper’s tiring legs and spares him against pacey opposition.

Newcastle are sitting ducks…
A home defeat to Watford means the Magpies have mustered just one point and a single goal in the last five Gameweeks. Despite the hefty summer outlay, there’s been little sign of progress on Tyneside – Steve McClaren’s side sit bottom for shots (50) and have managed just 14 efforts on target in six matches. Toiling at both ends of the pitch, they now face Chelsea and City in back-to-back matches as the malaise looks set to continue.

….and Sunderland have no reason to be smug…
Newcastle’s domestic woes have been mirrored by Dick Advocaat’s side as the north east duo prop up the table after six rounds of fixtures. The resilience that served up 13 clean sheets in 2014/15 looks long gone as the Black Cats continue to ship goals at an alarming rate – a 2-0 defeat at Bournemouth means they’ve been breached more times (13) than any side so far. Having failed to score in each of the last two since moving to a 4-2-3-1, there’s no reason for optimism ahead of clashes with United, West Ham and West Brom’s backline in the following three.

Silva’s fragility is becoming a concern…
The City playmaker has now missed back-to-back league outings after being ruled out of the weekend home clash with West Ham. With the likes of Raheem Sterling and Kevin de Bruyne bolstering Manuel Pellegrini’s options in the final third this term, it seems that the City boss is prepared to court caution when it comes to Silva’s fitness. First an ankle injury, now a calf complaint – can we afford to keep faith in the 10.2-priced Silva and rely on our benches to bail us out any more?

City can’t cope without Kompany…
The home loss to the Hammers coincided with Vincent Kompany’s first absence of the season. City were overwhelming favourites last weekend after serving up five straight clean sheets but they looked far from resilient with their captain on the sidelines. Given the upcoming fixtures, those holding City defenders will be more than happy to hold but it’s clear that their prospects for defensive returns are significantly improved with Kompany’s presence in the back-four.

Sigurdsson is a fading star….
Yet another blank last weekend means the Swansea playmaker has managed just a single assist in the first six outings. It’s a real fall from Fantasy grace for Sigurdsson, who’d racked up seven goals and ten assists in his first season under Garry Monk last time around. After playing all but five minutes of the first four, the midfielder has been subbed off on 70 and 60 minutes respectively in the last two, with his influence waning on the Swans’ attack.

Vardy won’t let Mahrez hog the headlines….
The Foxes duo continue to bring in points, with both once again delivering for their owners in Saturday’s comeback draw at Stoke. Mahrez may be hogging the headlines but Vardy deserves credit for a series of consistent displays – a goal at the Britannia was his third strike in successive outings. Indeed, the 6.2-priced striker has blanked in just one of the first six, richly rewarding those who opted for a double-up on Claudio Ranieri’s attack.

Bolasie is no striker…
Palace’s recent goal drought has coincided with Alan Pardew’s decision to handed the DR Congo international the lone forward role. With Connor Wickham still sidelined through injury, the Eagles boss has ignored the likes of Patrick Bamford, Dwight Gayle and Frazier Campbell and turned to Bolasie to lead the line instead. Given that Palace scored eight goals in the first four – including a 2-1 win at Chelsea – Pardew needs to address his side’s woes up top, with a more physical presence surely needed to boost their appeal ahead of some kind fixtures.

McCarthy’s tenure could be under threat…
One of the very few sub-4.5 options available to Fantasy managers, the Palace stopper’s security of starts looks in question after he was criticised by Alan Pardew in light of yesterday’s loss to Spurs. McCarthy has yet to manage a clean sheet in the first six Gameweeks and with Julian Speroni stepping up his fitness drive after weeks on the sidelines with a hand problem, those holding the former QPR keeper could soon be making plans for a way out.

Martial looks a risk worth taking….
In a season where form has been the overriding factor, United’s big-money signing has made an instant impact. After scoring as a sub against Liverpool, Martial has been fast-tracked to the starting XI and has instantly added a cutting edge to the Red Devils, with a finely-taken brace away to Southampton last time out. Despite some testing fixtures to follow after the weekend visit of Sunderland, the bandwagon is in full flow and with a price of just 8.1, it’s hard to resist Martial if he continues to cement a place in Louis van Gaal’s first-team plans.

Southampton have issues at full-back…
Six matches into the season and the Saints’ defence is still very much a work in progress. Whilst new boy Virgil van Dijk looks to have secured a starting role alongside Jose Fonte in the heart of the back-four, Ronald Koeman still seems unconvinced by the rest of his defence. Cedric Soares was dropped for the first time this term at right-back, whilst left-back Matt Targett – who had previously managed every minute of the season – was hauled off at the break against United. The imminent return of Ryan Bertrand should improve things but Koeman looks unconvinced by his options on the right.

…and United have problems there too…
Louis van Gaal also subbed off both his full-backs in yesterday’s win as concerns over United’s defence increase. The Dutchman conceded he hooked Matteo Darmian due to the Italian’s inability to stop Dusan Tadic on the Saints’ left, whilst the unconvincing Marcos Rojo was handed 80 minutes due to Luke Shaw’s long-term injury before being replaced by Paddy McNair. Having opened the season with a trio of clean sheets, United have now been breached five times in the subsequent three and with Arsenal, Everton and City in the next four, their recent lack of resilience will have many thinking twice over investing.

Norwich will manage Hoolahan’s pitch time…
Dropped to the Norwich bench for the weekend trip to Liverpool, it’s clear that the veteran’s pitch time is far from assured as Alex Neil opts for a horses for courses approach. With four assists already, Hoolahan’s creativity is clearly vital to the Canaries’ survival prospects and Neil’s weekend teamsheet at Anfield is perhaps an indication that Hoolahan is surplus to requirement when the Canaries are looking to tighten up defensively and cover ground in midfield. Seven testing fixtures (mci, SWA, che, ARS, EVE, mun, tot) in eight from Gameweek 11 onwards may well see the Republic of Ireland man struggle for attention as a fifth midfielder.

The Gomez option looks done and dusted…
Brendan Rodgers’ decision to finally switch his tactics and recall Alberto Moreno and Mamadou Sakho to the starting XI looks like bad news for a couple of Liverpool defenders. Those holding Dejan Lovren and Joe Gomez will now be mulling over their options, with Moreno’s assist for Danny Ings’ strike looking likely to keep the Spaniard in the frame for the weekend home clash against Villa. Whilst Lovren sits in just 2% of sides, Gomez’ 20% FPL ownership now seem set to turn their attentions elsewhere as Rodgers looks to last term’s 3-4-1-2 set-up to help steer him out of trouble. Another spot on the bench at home to Villa and the exodus will pick up pace.

    My defence is horrible:
Kolarov (tot) - Gomez (AVL) - Targett (SWA) - Richards (liv) - R.Martin (whm)

With Gomez and Targett not secure for 90 minutes, I probably need to trade them asap. The question is that do I do it this week for -4 or wait until next week? If I wait, I will probably still end up taking a -4 next week (planning to get Hazard in if he scores again)

    A) Get rid of Gomez for -4?
    B) Get rid of Targett for -4?
    C) Save for next week (play Kolarov, Targett and Gomez and have R.Martin as first sub)?

I tend to agree with that statement. Personally ignoring Martial this week as the only way I can afford it is with a hit. I do think that WBA defence will be worth the hit over the long term but if it can be done for free, you're already 4 points up on the deal. Martial, regardless of his 3 goals so far, is still abit of an unknown quantity - we've seen sth similar with Januzaj. Popped up with 3 goals, opponents knew little about him, needed a couple of games to figure him out.

I think i'm doing more damage to my team with the constant tinkering so i'll probably save the FT for the first time this season and reassess Martial/Hazard/Sanchez this weekend.

These aggressive price rises makes this game so difficult. But unless you're in the know (most of the time) it'll give you the edge over your rivals.

I think it was the season before last where the prices were ridiculously aggressive. 0.3 rise and falls left right and centre, then the season after it slowed right down. Now it's gone back up again this season.

It's annoying when you miss a price rise.
I rushed to get payet in yesterday. And he hasn't rose again (even though it's likely tonight)

Yeah, missed one Martial rise due to be slack.

To me its the falls you really have to avoid. Early non playing, out of form players can lose so much value. Worth, long term a hit or 2 to get rid of them imo

Yeah I mean it won't be the same for everyone. But when you're a teenager you're generally still in the showing off and immature stage. "Look at me, I play for a top team, I score goals, drive fast cars and get women". They have no fear.

I remember Jeffers was like the future best striker on planet in CM at the time, and even a world class striker to start with. A bit premature hype.

I don't think it's just about handling with the pressure. The other part of it is that some players don't seem to take enough pressure but just party around and think they're already fecking good enough. And they may be, for their age, but once they stop progressing they start declining. And it's pretty sad to look at these 24-year-old has beens, e.g. Balotelli.

He was never going to play regularly with the strikers they had at the time.

Yeah, part that of course. But he also appeared to have some attitude problems, so I wouldn't be surprised if it was also a case of a player who thought too much of himself and didn't progress for that reason.

It's funny, as this is already a bit old, their latest addition to the list, Kakuta, has since reemerged very well at Rayo Vallecano in Spain, and it remains to be seen if he can repeat the feat and progress at Sevilla. Sometimes they don't fail after all.

That said, considering how much ahead he was of others of his age, one would have expected him to be a regular international by this time, at least. So in that sense, he's already a flop. Chelsea's talent hogging is bound to create flops of this sort, players who become good enough to do a good professional career but who could have become some of the best in world had they take a different career path.

Yesterday I did Ozil to Payet because of the possible Payet rise and am regretting it -

I thought I'd monitor then Costa ban situation and take a hit later in the week to ship him out. That aside I feel I need for a WBA defender (Gomez out)

Both Costa and Gomez and bigger priorities than Payet really, but I was blinded by the price rise lights

And Ozil though he has been quiet on an Fantasy front has been creating chances

Price rise should only be used as an indicator for how well your team is doing and NEVER used as a reason for subbing a player in unless you're playing your wildcard. I've done so this week as, like many other seasons, many early form players are starting to drop off. I played it on Sunday and I have to admit i've unashamedly picked players with a good chance of a price rise to garner some value in my team (0.6m so far) but may still sub a couple out before GW7.

There is an argument for taking a hit on what looks like a sure bet on a player, which could be accompanied by an inevitable price rise. But still, the price rise is the bonus and not the reason

Not for hits. But in the second half of the season you need at TV of around 105 to compete effectively. You need to get one a couple of these bandwagons - Kolarov, Mahrez, Yaya and Wilson possibly. Not all of them. Martial will be another one.

A slight yes! Took my most ever hits last year and got me to my 2nd best ever finish, in the top 4k.

But occasional. I will willingly take a hit to get rid of a player dropping in price, a sustainable bandwagon is of course what we look for,. Yes its a bit punty but if, and big if, Martial nails down that striker spot for probably top 4 team then 8 million is v underpriced.

Getting that value up and after xmas you can effectively have say a 7-8m player over your rivals 4.5- 5m benchwarmer.

And circumstances. Imagine if Benteke had been confirmed out? (hypothetical)

Benteke to Matial and Shaw to Dawson would be worth a hit. (an example situation). Chasing the rises, avoiding falls, sorting the team.

Felt overexposed with Williams, Ayew and Gomis in my team and no Utd coverage.

I am now praying Martial does something against Sunderland and get another 0.2 rise next GW. Then I can monitor his form and worse case sell for 0.2 profit. Lots of ifs.

Will contemplate finally removing Coates for a hit (to C.Dawson) later in the week.

Taking hits to avoid fallers is better than jumping on risers. Most fallers are underperforming anyway (thus the drop) so it kills two birds with one stone. I'd only take a hit for a riser if it was a player I wanted anyway.

      1. Sharkytect
        • 11 Years

This is a good point, especially as it takes you two 0.1 rises to make a profit anyway. It's not that common to make a decent profit on a player, because those players who have risen tend to be the same ones you want for a while.

    8. Sharkytect
      • 11 Years

I have played this for years and always tend to do better in the second half of the season, when my team has more value. I tend to find myself near the bottom of my mini leagues by Christmas and up somewhere near the top by the end. I have always transferred in players with price rises/drops in mind.

However, last season I had my best season ever, and I shifted tactics (slightly), trying to assess whether I genuinely thought players would come good in the long term before jumping on them rather than just because they are going to rise soon.

There will ALWAYS be a point in the season where you are 0.1 short of the player you want, and you have to compromise, but I don't think it's a clear cut yes/no. Team value is important, but not at the expense of points.

The way I do it is if I have plans to bring a player in for a certain GW I try to get him in before is price rise. I was planning to do Payet and Oscar this week for Sanchez and Westwood. I've already done the Payet to Sanchez move to save myself the extra 0.1, but I'll wait with the Oscar move. I wouldn't bring in for example Martial, because he is going up in price as I'm not convinced I'll want to keep him for 4-6 gw's and have other priorities.

I think it's a happy medium you're after. If you make the right transfers TV looks after itself but if you follow it religiously you could end up with a high TV but not a great rank.

It's not about the price rise for me this week just the fact that Martial is playing at home to the team that's let in the most goals.

Feels like if Martial comes big this weekend unless you have him you may lose distance to those at the top.

Lucky that the rest of my squad I'm pretty happy with so can always do a transfer to Ighalo when the fixtures turn although it's pretty naughty to only to get him in for one game!

this is problematic thinking though because theres every chance that someone like benteke or ighalo will do as well of not better then martial this weekend. Sure he has a higher expected points output this weekeed probably but not by much so if he is outperformed by the other guys and then you wnat to get rid as well now you are behing by points and by two trnasfers.

The importance of TV is suppressed whenever there are budget attackers doing the business (e.g. Wilson, Mahrez, Kane & Austin etc) and premium options are faltering. This could all change later in the season however

If we had to have an Everton player + a Saints player would it be:

    A) Pelle + Barkley
    B) Lukaku + Manè

    Thanks

      On current form A
Long term I think B would do better.

the Gomez option is far from done, he will be back as a CB soon if Rodgers continues with a 3 at the back.

In place of Can? Maybe but he put faith in Can in that position for much of the latter part of last season.

quite a possibility, Can could be thrust back into midfield with Milner doing very poorly. most Liverpool fans I know are advocating a Skrtel Sakho Gomez back 3.
