This afternoon we publish our usual pre-Gameweek members article, which focuses on the main captaincy contenders according to the votes cast in our Captain Poll. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Boasting 33% of the vote, Anthony Martial is a new entry at the summit of the Captain’s Poll. The former Monaco frontman emerged from the bench in midweek to round off Manchester United’s League Cup win over Swindon Town, bringing his tally to four goals in three domestic outings. Martial has netted with three of his four strikes in the league and now enjoys a home tie against a Sunderland outfit that ranks top for goals conceded (13) this term. By virtue of his good form (two goals and assists in five starts) and the Red Devils’ favourable match-up, Juan Mata joins the Frenchman in the top 10. Mata has recorded just one blank since Gameweek 2 and ranks top among Man United’s midfielders for shots on target (five) this term.

Sergio Aguero slips to the silver-medal position this Gameweek, with just 19% of voters willing to hand him the captain’s armband. After netting against Sunderland in the cup in midweek, last year’s Golden Boot winner will be relishing the opportunity to pit his wits against Spurs at White Hart Lane this Saturday, having racked up eight goals in his previous four starts against the North London outfit. Aguero’s new team-mate Kevin De Bruyne lies in seventh spot, with 2% of voters eyeing up the 10.0-priced midfielder. The Belgium international netted his second goal in as many starts on Wednesday and placed in the top five among his counterparts for attempts (four) last Gameweek.

Dimitri Payet (9%) and Riyad Mahrez (6%) sit third and fourth, respectively, on the leaderboard. The former has tallied two goals and one assist in his last two outings and faces a home tie against Norwich’s generous defence – only Sunderland (13) and Chelsea (12) have conceded more goals than the Canaries (10). The latter, meanwhile, is 12 points clear of any player in the league, having bagged five goals and three assists already this season. Mahrez ranks joint-top among midfielders for shots on target (10) ahead of Arsenal’s visit to the King Power Stadium.

Alexis Sanchez and Eden Hazard are neck-and-neck at the 5% mark. Sanchez chalked up three more attempts (31) and eight more shots inside the box (14) than any midfielder through the first six Gameweeks but is still yet to open his account. Nonetheless, the fact that the Foxes have conceded in every match-up so far will serve as encouragement for the Chile international. Conversely, Hazard broke his duck last time out against the Gunners but has recorded just 10 attempts this term. The Belgian winger is afforded a chance to build momentum on t as the Blues gear up for a trip to Newcastle United.

Pedro, Harry Kane and Callum Wilson all look differential picks with a mere 1% backing. Since making his debut in Gameweek 3, Pedro has bettered team-mate Hazard for shots (14 to eight) and efforts in the box (eight to five), with the Spaniard continuing his fine form with a goal in the midweek cup win over Walsall.

Kane ranks second in the forward charts for attempts (21) but has tested the keeper with just four of these strikes. A visit from a Man City outfit that’s registered five clean sheets in six matches could prolong the Spurs striker’s barren spell. Wilson, on the other hand, sits joint-top in the scoring charts with five goals. The 6.0-priced forward will certainly fancy his chances when Bournemouth travel to face a Stoke City side that’s conceded five more big chances (20) than any other team.

With City confirming Silva is out of tomorrow's match - is Silva>KDB worth a -4 hit?

I have the same starting midfield at the moment Manani and Man City have some easy games coming up. Wouldn't be surprised to see Yaya run over KDB and these defences and nudge a few goals. Stats & his game last week would suggest he isn't far off.

I would use one transfer this week to move on the likes of Gomez or Bassong.

It's hard to say without seeing your team. I am surprised that there's no room for any of them as I'd pick at least three of them (don't think payet is essential)

I'd say no Mahrez or Payet is potentially pretty dangerous (especially Mahrez) - Sanchez hasn't returned anything yet and Martial is early days so no worries there. The other two may come back to haunt you though (especially as such good value)

Could Martial tonight become the first ever player to rise 0.4m in a single game-week?

The 0.3m limit for the maximum rise in a single game-week was imposed in 2013-14 (and possibly also in 2012-13), when the threshold for a second or third rise in the same game-week was the same as for the first rise.

In other seasons, the threshold for the second rise was twice that required for the first, the threshold for the third was three times, and no-one ever reached the threshold of four times that might have been required for a fourth rise.

The current threshold for a single rise is 38,168 according to fplstatistics, so the threshold for a 4th rise would be 4*38,168=152,672.

Martial currently needs another 58,661 net transfers in today to reach that figure. It could happen!

I thin kit will be capped at 0.3 and his NTI will be rest at the start of the next GW as per last year

It may be, but we don't really know, because I don't think the situation has ever arisen before.

fplstatistics clearly thinks that it is a possibility.

Surely it happened with Michu / Suarez / Bale / RvP

Agree it is a possibility but an unlikely one imo

Does anyone have any figures for how many net transfers in players like Michu, Suarez, Bale and RVP had between their 3rd price rise of the game-week and the end of that game-week?

And were those in 2012-13 or 2013-14 when the rules for price rises may have been different?

Suarez's big year was in 2013-14, and the others you mention in 2012-13, when the price rise rules were different.

Another factor is that transfers made on wildcards no longer count towards price rises, and there won't be many active wildcards this game-week.

Also, Martial's ownership was very low at the start of the game-week, so his rise in popularity has been unusually meteoric.

He is now up to 74.5% in fplstatistics, with only another 38,977 NTI required, and at that rate we should definitely expect to get a definitive answer tonight as to whether or not the cap still fits.

My impression was that the threshold for the next price rise would be reset to that required for a first rise at the start of the next game-week, but that the number of NTI would be carried forward.

There may have been no need for a cap, except in 2012-13 and 2013-14 when the first 3 price rises of the game-week were easier to achieve. I don't remember any mention of a price cap before these seasons.

Ooh interesting. Does the threshold not depend on ownership?

Falls depend on ownership. Rises depend on a percentage of the total number of teams in FPL.

So that 38,168 threshold applies to all players for the first rise?

According to fplstatistics, players with no net transfers and no price rises this game-week are all currently shown as being 38,168 short of their next price rise.

I don't think there will be such a thing as a 0.4m rise. If it ever existed, players like Siggy and others would have gotten it last year.

        • 12 Years

Not even Siggy got moved in at this speed, well over half a million people in one week is pretty much new territory.

What are you talking about. Max 0.3 rise. Max 0.3 drop. No different this season regardless of how many transfers he gets in.

Watford haven't conceded a single home goal so far, and Palace haven't scored in 2 GWs. Surely a Watford CS there, especially if Bolasie is up front again?
