This Much We Know – Gameweek 8

Sergio Aguero and Alexis Sanchez serve a timely reminder of their world class talents. Kevin de Bruyne strengthens his claim as a must-have big hitter but Eden Hazard’s toils continue. Riyad Mahrez’ Fantasy potential could be curtailed by The Tinkerman, Christian Eriksen steps up his consistency, whilst Sadio Mane looks a major differential.

Class is permanent with Aguero and Sanchez…
After Alexis Sanchez set the tone with a hat-trick against Leicester last week, Sergio Aguero’s five-goal haul against Newcastle underlined why, in certain cases, it’s provident to be patient with big hitters. The duo banished their stuttering starts and have exploded into form simultaneously, scoring six goals apiece in the last week in all competitions. It’s been a long time coming but, finally, the South American pair look back to their blistering best – going without either of them now looks a very dangerous tactic.

…and De Bruyne deserves his big hitter status…
Three goal and two assists in a trio of league starts has underlined why City were prepared to splash the cash on the former Chelsea wide man. De Bruyne has played a part in five of City’s last eight goals, strengthening his claim as the leading contender amongst Manuel Pellegrini’s midfield. A double-up with Sanchez in the centre of the park is quickly becoming the preferred tactic for many, with the Belgian’s explosive potential looking increasingly difficult to ignore.

Chelsea’s toils aren’t helping Hazard…
Whilst Sanchez and Aguero finally translated their underlying numbers into points, the situation is a little different for Chelsea’s big hitter. Jose Mourinho’s side look alarmingly short of form and Hazard’s Fantasy potential has suffered significantly as a result, with the Belgian offering little evidence to suggest he can arrest his recent malaise. With Sanchez and De Bruyne key targets, Hazard looks surplus to requirement as we look to free up budget.

…whilst Pedro’s minutes need monitored…
The Spaniard’s owners were placed on high alert after he was omitted from the starting XI for the first time this term by Jose Mourinho. Replacement Willian vindicated his manager’s decision, though, by scoring for the third successive match in all competitions, with Pedro only handed minutes at the break due to the Brazilian’s withdrawal through illness. Now down to 9.3, Pedro is second only to Yaya Toure amongst midfielders for transfers out this week and with the international break now upon us, that exodus looks likely to pick up pace.

Sako’s star is fading fast…
Similar to Pedro, the Palace summer signing’s immediate impact has quickly died out, leaving him warming the Selhurst Park bench against West Brom last weekend. Alan Pardew’s decision to turn to last year’s attacking midfield trio, Yannick Bolasie, Wilfried Zaha and Jason Puncheon, paid off as the Eagles soared into fourth spot. Back-to-back spot-kicks from Yohan Cabaye highlights the numerous options within the Selhurst Park midfield but Sako’s name may be struck from that list, if Saturday’s team sheet is anything to go by.

Ranieri’s tinkering could derail Mahrez’ season…
The Leicester manager reminded us just why he’s known as “The Tinkerman” by surprisingly dropping Riyad Mahrez to the bench for the trip to Norwich. Frustratingly for Fantasy managers, Ranieri’s decision paid off as the Foxes recovered from their Gameweek 7 home loss to Arsenal by defeating the Canaries at Carrow Road. Sitting in 54% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) sides, we may have to reconsider Mahrez if Ranieri feels he can get away with omitting the Algerian on occasion, with Jamie Vardy looking far more secure by comparison.

There’s no shortage of Wilson replacements…
As the Callum Wilson exodus picks up pace, a number of budget options threw their hat in the ring at the weekend. Glenn Murray scored once and missed a penalty on his first start in Wilson’s absence for Bournemouth, whilst Odion Ighalo continues to look like Watford’s only source of goals – the 5.3-priced frontman’s fifth of the season was accompanied by maximum bonus, taking him to fourth overall amongst strikers. With Aleksandar Mitrovic finding the net at City ahead of Newcastle’s kind upcoming schedule, there are still plenty of budget differentials to consider for those looking to free up cash.

Mane is starting to motor…
A goal and assist away to Chelsea highlighted the Southampton midfielder’s fixture-proof appeal as the schedule starts to turn in his favour. Whilst Graziano Pelle sits in 18% of FPL sides, Mane remains a real differential – just 6% of managers have taken the plunge on a player who has delivered two goals and five assists in his last four starts. The Saints have now put eight past Swansea, United and Chelsea in the previous three and with Dusan Tadic also in decent form, investment in the St Mary’s outfit looks top of many agendas.

A consistent Eriksen adds more to the midfield mix…
One goal in the final 15 Gameweeks of 2014/15 is indicative of how frustrating the Tottenham midfielder can be as a Fantasy asset. Sunday’s two-goal haul at Swansea, however, suggests Eriksen may be a little more reliable this time around – having recovered from injury, he’s now produced returns in four of his five league appearances so far. With four home clashes and a trip to Bournemouth in the next six, can the Dane justify that 8.3 price tag and barge his way into our five-man midfields?

Lukaku is tempting…
Despite a horrendous opening schedule, the Everton frontman sits third amongst strikers after racking up three goals and an assist against West Brom and Liverpool since last Monday. Whereas the likes of West Ham, Leicester, Southampton and Swansea have viable goal scoring alternatives in the centre of the park, Ross Barkley’s recent lack of form heightens Lukaku’s importance to the Toffees’ cause. Whilst the playmaker blanked for the fifth time in six league matches, the big Belgian is starting to pick up pace as the main Everton target ahead of their superb run of fixtures from Gameweek 11 onwards.

We shouldn’t write Ayew off…
Back in the goals against Spurs at the Liberty, the Ghana international rewarded his 20% owners by climbing into the top five midfielder placings. Ayew banished a three-match barren streak to notch for the third time in four home appearances as Garry Monk’s men finally rediscovered their scoring touch at a time when Bafetimbi Gomis’ toils continue. Although many who doubled-up on the Swansea pair are looking to part company with the misfiring Frenchman, Ayew, at 7.2, seems worth retaining for now.

Theo is looking undroppable …
It’s five straight starts in the league now for the England international, with Olivier Giroud once again consigned to a bench-warming berth. Tellingly, Walcott kept his place up top despite the fact that Giroud was suspended for midweek Champions League duties – dispelling the notion that Arsene Wenger would alternate on a regular basis. It’s two goals and three assists in the last three across all competitions now for Walcott, whose speed and movement up top have helped the Gunners score ten times over those fixtures – given his side’s outstanding form, Wenger will surely be very reluctant to change things for the Gameweek 9 visit to Watford.

Seeing a lot of people saying they've pulled the trigger already, but is catching a player before their price rise worth the risk of them potentially getting injured during the internationals?

Maybe if you are strapped for cash or on a WC but I'd hold as they price rise will fall if they get injured and carry on going up if not.

It was worth it to get rid of Pedro. I don't mind missing a price rise too much, but a price fall hurts.

Not for a .1 it aint.

But Sterling to KDB , was worth the risk for me. Think saved at least a .3 loss, maybe .4 .

Aiming to upgrade to KBD but sadly I'm 0.4 short, who would you downgrade to get it, and to who?

    A) Gomez --> (to permanent bench warmer)
    B) Richards --> (to permanent bench warmer)
    C) Darmian --> 5.3 defender
    D) Dawson --> 4.6 defender
    E) Kolarov --> 5.6 defender

What are peoples thoughts on whether Gomez will start under Klopp (or whoever takes over)?

Will a changing of the guard help or is he likely to be stuck on bench duties no matter who comes in?

I have Ighalo, but i think Vardy probably long term (especially if you don't get Mahrez).

KDB or Payet is tough, kinda depends on your team. If you have Aguero you could get Silva instead of KDB or something like that. Whereas Payet seems to be at the heart of EVERYTHING West Ham does. (I know because i have Sakho and i'm not willing to double up and get Payet, which has hurt me). I have KDB and love him as a player, but i feel KDB or Payet could work either way, especially since Payet saves you money to upgrade elsewhere, and KDB is a baller.

If i were to get Vardy with my WC i would drop Mahrez. Don't want both. Long term i cant see them both giving returns all season. I'll probably use my WC in GW 11 area. Get some Everton guys in for their amazing run of fixtures etc.

Can someone help me rationalise this Mahrez situation...

So Ranieri benched Mahrez because Norwich had good fullbacks....Leicester next go AWAY to Southampton with MUCH better fullbacks.

What's stopping us from assuming that Mahrez won't be benched again? He might play, but might he start?

    Wow - what a gameweek.

    Made a few odd choices.

    Some paid off well:
    - KDB, Sanchez, Ighalo in
    - Kept Aguero

    Some not so much:
    - Didn't put the armband on ze Kun.

Still got 96pts total without Aguero (c), and jumped a whopping 800k spots or so, from 1.240k to 394k.

Guess I should be happy. No injuries either.
Better leave the team alone till after the international games, and see what's up closer to 17th.

    My darling feo
This has been the hardest thing I have ever had to write but I feel it has to be said. I think we have to accept our relationship is over. We have been trying for years to get this right and other than the occasional moments it just doesn't seem to work. You know I will always love watching you slice through defences or fly down the wing and cut in for a goal, and yes it is going to be really hard knowing you are doing that for other managers but for us those times were too few.
Let's face it there will never be another 12/13 season. Oh I know you are going to mention that night at WHU , God how could I ever forget December at West Ham , but that's just it, they are so few and so far between. I can't give all my love for those occasional explosions, no matter how ecstatic they make me. Look at last year, I gave you so much of my time despite all my friends telling me I was wrong to. I defended you so much, saying you would come through for me only to be let down week after week. You just don't know what it feels like to spend every week looking forward to the weekend thinking you are going to be taken to heaven only to be as deflated as a space hopper at a weight watchers let's see how many of us can sit on a space hopper convention.
Then when I finally see sense at the end of the season and let you go you show me your magic wand again and I am hooked back in. I spent the whole summer looking forward to a perfect start to our season all over again, enthralled by the fore play that is the community shield only for it to happen all over again. Only its different this year, last year I had George Boyd to comfort me from the bench. Westwood just isn't George Boyd .
Deep down we always knew there where three people in this relationship, perhaps it could have worked if it was just the two of us, but with Wenger there it is just too unpredictable. I know he has said you are number one choice and you have started showing what made me love you in the first place, but we both know it isn't going to last. I know this will hurt you to hear it as much as it does for me to say it but I need to. Feo I have found someone else, it's payet, I know he won't give me the explosions that you did and he won't have my heart racing on those Monday nights in Stoke and Norwich, but he is safe. He is someone I can trust and at this point in my life this is what I need, but just know when he is slipping the ball into an empty net it is you I will be thinking of.

    Yours
    John Terry's dog

Ahaha beautiful, summed up exactly how I feel.

Theo, light of my life, fire of my loins. My sin, my soul. The-o: the tip of the tongue taking a trip of two steps down the palate to tap, at two, on the teeth. The. O. He was Wally, plain Wally, in the morning, standing five feet nine in one sock. He was Feo on the training ground. He was Walcott on the dotted line. But in my arms he was always Theo.

Yep going to stick with my choice to take Mata over KDB and keep strength in the rest of my team, I won't dismantle my team for KDB, nobody is essential and Mata at 8.8 is an interchangeable spot with the likes of Eriksen, Wally, Coutinho, Aye etc.

I think Mata will get solid points all season, historically he pretty much always has as long as he gets decent amounts of game time. Well worth the 9m mark, looking to get him in myself soon somehow!

    Butland, MacCarthy
    Kolarov, Cresswell, Richards, Evans, Gomez
    Sanchez, KDB, Payet, Mahrez, Sinclair
    Aguero, Pelle, Wilson

1 FT and 0.5 in the bank.

Players that need to go in order of priority would be Wilson, Gomez and McCarthey.

Thinking of getting rid of the first 2 this week for a 4 point hit. Possible targets include Ighalo (Form), Berahino (Good fixtures) and Mitrovic (Good fixtures) for Wilson and depending who i get up front i may be able to afford Janmaat (Good fixtures + gets forward a lot but also plays for Newcastle so clean sheets could be few and far between!). Other options could be Naughton, Dann, Martin or Ben Davies? Any thoughts/advise would be great appreciated at this point!

    My current front 8:

Manè (LEI) - Ayew (STK) - Payet (cry) - Mahrez (sou) - Silva (BOU)

Pellè (LEI) - Aguero (BOU) - Vardy (sou)

I have no idea who to bench. It's gonna be either Vardy or Mahrez and I wouldn't want to miss another Mahrez haul nor Vardy's form of scoring goals :/ But it is Saints away. So who do I bench?

Also currently contemplating the decision whether to captain Aguero, Pelle or Mane. Thanks guys

It isn't IMO. I've got both and am pretty happy, obviously Mane is the better pick for the next 2 as he's a lot more explosive, excellent fixtures and form. Mahrez will remain a good pick IMO and at that price he's definitely a steal

Are Berahino and Sturridge not good differentials to have? It is a huge risk I guess

Done my boots on Pedro this week but with 1FT and Gomez to sort on an international week it looks like I've got to take a 0.3 drop on the chin! Already had a 0.3 drop with Theo before wildcard..

Might get Theo back or a bit of Eriksen. He trolled me 3 times last season!

Any better Midfield options for £4.4m or less than Wanyama (£4.3m)?

Thinking of him myself for Westwood and going AOA this week.

I thought not. Got stung by having no playing player on my bench at the weekend with Mahrez not playing. Thanks!

Using AOA with Wanyama as your 5th mid is an absolute waste imo.

Surman. Only downside to wanyama is that it takes up a saints slot. They seem to be on the rise and having bertrand, mane and pelle in your team could potentially be very profitable.

Sunderland have nice upcoming fixtures. If BFS takes over, they might have some handy acquisitions such as Lens, Panti, O'Shea.

Thanks Doos, I'll take that as a no! Will monitor nonetheless for defensive options. Sam had a good influence on West Ham defensive assets.

Decision to make over the break.

2 FT but no money in the bank.

    Fabianski, McCarthy
    Francis, Saylor, Cedric, Kolarov, Bellerin
    Hazard, Sanchez, Mahrez, Payet, Westwood
    Aguero, Vardy, Diouf

Want to do Hazard to KDB and upgrade Diouf, but will only have about £7.5m for a striker so not enough for Pellé.

Not really interested in keeping Haz even for Villa, Chelsea not worth it right now.

Any other ideas? Really want KDB though.

                No, Goalkeepers.

                Who would you recommend then?

See John Terry's dog for Walcott. Not happening in my team mate, regardless of what the stats say.

Nice team, I'm unsure myself about selling Hazard for KDB, will prob wait until end of international break. Costa back should reinvigorate Chelsea.

Do you have 5 playing mids, i.e. not someone like westwood as a 5th mid? If so then I'd go down the kdb & ighalo route. Mind you saints likely to get a goal or two against leicester.

I have Alexis, Payet, Ayew and Mahrez (who surprisingly didn't play) so yes. There is still plenty of time to decide who to buy and who to sell, so I'll probably wait .. and thanks! 🙂
