Injuries

Treatment Table – Gameweek 8

Arsene Wenger and Manuel Pellegrini confirm that Alexis Sanchez and Sergio Aguero were withdrawn for precautionary reasons ahead of the upcoming internationals. West Brom have worries in defence, whilst Liverpool’s playmaker pulls out of the Brazil squad due to injury earlier today. Here’s our round up of the weekend injury news…

Arsenal
Alexis Sanchez came off after 81 minutes against Manchester United in visible discomfort, though Arsene Wenger was quick to allay fears over any injury, confirming that the wide man is set to feature for Chile in the upcoming internationals:

“He has a little groin problem. Unfortunately he goes to Chile. You cannot stop him from going to Chile and he loves so much to play for his country and he will play against Brazil [on Friday] and Peru [next] Tuesday so the game at home against Brazil he will not want to miss. Hopefully he will come back in good shape.”

Aston Villa
Ciaran Clark sat out the Villains’ 1-0 home defeat to Stoke City after picking up a thigh strain, Tim Sherwood has confirmed.

Chelsea
Goalscorer Willian was replaced by Loic Remy at the 64-minute mark of Chelsea’s home clash against Southampton, with Jose Mourinho later explaining that he took counsel with the club doctor after the Brazilian became ill during the break:

“When the fans boo the Willian decision, I would do that too if I didn’t know he was vomiting at half-time and the doctor said it would be hard for him to carry on.”

Leicester City
Jamie Vardy received a heavy blow to the knee in the first half of Leicester’s trip to Norwich City but was able to carry on and complete the match. Claudio Ranieri sought to allay fears over the form striker’s fitness, insisting that Vardy sustained no serious damage from the collision:

“No, nothing serious. When I saw Vardy on the ground I thought it was a bad injury because Jamie never stays down. When he came close to our bench, the physio said it was his knee, but he was stable and he continued to play.”

Liverpool
Philippe Coutinho has withdrawn from Brazil’s squad ahead of their World Cup qualifiers, with Liverpool’s official site offering no details on the nature of his injury.

Danny Ings confirmed he sustained a minor injury during the Merseyside derby but expects to be fit for upcoming England duties:

”I struggled through the game – I just got my ankle caught in Phil Jagielka’s legs. As the game went on I felt that I couldn’t move as much. It will be assessed but should be fine.”

Manchester City
Following his five-goal frenzy, Sergio Aguero was substituted after 66 minutes at the Etihad. Manuel Pellegrini said that the Argentine marksman received treatment at half time after taking kicks to his back and hamstring in the first period, so the Sky Blues boss elected to exercise caution and manage Aguero’s minutes:

“He had treatment at half time, and to give him more minutes he could have scored but we must be cautious about his fitness, because he could be injured. Last season Kun finished the season without any problem. He is doing a different preparation, so I’m not worried about injuries, you can be injured by kicks of course but muscle injuries he should not have any more.”

Newcastle United
Newcastle United defender Kevin Mbabu picked up a hamstring complaint in the process of trying to prevent Aguero scoring his third goal of an eventual 6-1 thrashing. The Switzerland U19 international is now set to undergo a scan to ascertain the extent of his injury.

Norwich City
Lewis Grabban rolled his ankle during training last week so was ruled out of the Foxes clash, but Alex Neil expects him to be sidelined for longer than a week.

Stoke City
Marko Arnautovic was subbed off 21 minutes from time after scoring the only goal during the Potters’ visit to Villa Park. Mark Hughes played down the reason for the winger’s withdrawal:

“He just cramped up in his back which needed unlocking.”

Meanwhile, Mame Biram Diouf was stretchered off in the second half after damaging his hip. Hughes admitted that the striker is unlikely to team up with Senegal during the international break.

“He’s been in a bit of pain. He’s got an issue with his hip and hopefully hasn’t done anything to the capsule in the joint. But he’s struggling to walk and I’d be surprised if he meets up with his international team because he’s in a lot of pain and can’t weight bear.”

Swansea
Kyle Naughton missed yesterday’s home draw with Spurs due to personal reasons, reports in the local press have confirmed.

Watford
Jose Manuel Jurado missed Watford’s trip to Bournemouth with a hamstring injury, while Ikechi Anya has been given the go ahead to travel with Scotland despite being subbed off with a leg injury.

West Bromwich Albion
Jonny Evans lasted just 24 minutes at Crystal Palace after picking up a hamstring strain, while James Morrison took a blow to his ankle in the second half. Both players underwent scans to determine the extent of their injuries:

“We’ve got a problem with (James) Morrison – he’s felt his ankle. The home nations, we want to help them as much as we can. Me in particular, if I can. Fingers crossed they’ll be okay. If they’re anywhere near it, we’ll give them a chance to play. It will be all down to the doctor. He’ll scan them tomorrow. The scans now are fantastic so he’ll know whether they’re serious injuries or not.”

Elsewhere in the Baggies camp, Gareth McAuley suffered a recurrence of the calf injury that saw him miss the home clash with Everton last Monday. The defender is expected to recover in time to start for Northern Ireland during their World Cup qualifiers.

Darren Fletcher has trained for Scotland earlier today despite picking up a knock during West Brom’s loss at Palace.

West Ham United
Winston Reid was subbed off after 66 minutes at the Stadium of Light, whilst Victor Moses has withdrawn from international duties with Nigeria, claiming a lack of fitness.

Need some advice on what to do with this team.

    2.0 ITB, 1 FT

    Krul (Butland)
    Kolarov, Cresswell, Dawson (Cathcart, Richards)
    Payet, Sanchez, Mahrez, Silva, Hoolahan
    Vardy, Aguero (Ighalo)

Not too sure if I should keep my team as is, as I'm probably going to switch Cresswell for Bertrand or Jagielka for the long run. Perhaps downgrade Hoolahan and upgrade Payet to Mata in a couple weeks, or SIlva to KDB. Any thoughts? Cheers.

I wont swap Payet for anyone atm. The guy is a monster getting Bonus Points. I would strategize downgrading Cresswell and Kolarov, then upgrade Hoola playing 3-5-2.

I think Kolarov replacement is inevitable. Clichy is coming back. Rotation will occur. Its the same feeling as Sagna owners now having, seeing King Zaba returns. I wont say Kolarov out this Gameweek, but its inevitable I think and should be planned.

Keep Kolarov if possible. Their CS are drying up but Kompany will be back and we can expect free-kicks and assists from him.

taking a hit for a def...is always a foolish move

      1. Diva
        • 9 Years
        8 years, 7 months ago

It's not always a foolish move, but it does need to be very carefully thought through and justified. Taking a hit to get the next spangling defender is generally a no, but taking a hit to solve a genuine problem can be worthwhile.

      2. Kurtinho
        • 9 Years

Disagree. If it's a long-term transfer then it certainly aint foolish.

      3. Pumpkinhead
        • 9 Years

Disagree. I have taken a few bad defender hits. But last year I took a hit to bring in Baines before he exploded. Paid off amazingly.

    3. dmhomag
      • 9 Years
      8 years, 7 months ago

      Maths. Hit = -4

If it is a hit for a non player = 2 points per week (assuming no bench)
      0.1m = 1-2 points for the season (based off 2000 points / 100m x 30/38 GW)

So theoretically a hit may be justified. If you have bench cover then the hit is harder to justify.

That defence imo is a mess. Gab is short term. Janmaat is a punt at best (newcastle form and his form). Dann is the only one I would consider right now.

      Really nice front 8 though.

The defence isn't good I admit. I could downgrade but who and who would you bring in? It can't be Mahrez as he was in my original pick and would only bring in 6.0.

Tough call. All the front 8 are good. You'll only ever play 7 of them so you'll be having benching nightmares everywhere that being said I would probably keep the weak d and hope Janmaat and Gab get a few points every week.

True but it's only one decision for me to get wrong. 2 of the defence most likely won't play. In reality it's only 1.0M on the bench as I paid 5.0 for Mahrez. I also figure that a lot of the time one of my front 8 might not play.Love your blog btw.

          • 9 Years

Thanks! Mahrez started at 5.5m so at best you'll have 1m sat on the bench each week that could buy you some defensive cover.

Yes, you're right. I could downgrade Mahrez but there's thin pickings at 4.5 for MIDs. A 5.0 DEF would cover the entire team but i'm struggling if I get a front 8 no show. It's hard to drop the game's highest scoring MID for a DEF who I will bench most weeks.

I have however downgraded Browning to Hoban. Browning will probably never play once Coleman returns and Coleman has a good injury record. That allows me to bring in 2 x 4.5 DEFs if one of my main 3 get dropped or injured.

Indeed. Its his average position on the field that is more significant. Zaha will get his share of assists too. He's as much a creative threat as he is a goal threat.

Out of Bolasie, Puncheon, Zaha...Zaha is likeliest to be randomly dropped for sth silly like taking a throw in when he shouldn't be taking it.

Pardew seems like he enjoys dishing out tough love to Zaha.

Lukaku. Martial seems good enough to best smaller teams at least.
You are experienced enough to know Lukaku is atroll, but this season may be Evertons, as they don't have Europa league duties. Many players said so themselves.
Pelle could also hit a barren spell.

Greeting from the summit of the Scout League (1st in Scout league, and 14th in the world)

I'm sure there have been many before me and will be many after me to hold the great honor of being top of the scout league that will shout their own fame. I however am not going to be that guy, rather I thought I would just share some honest thoughts and encouragement for everyone out there. Do I suddenly consider myself to be a fantasy legend? Not at all, this is my 6th season and sure I consider to be better than average (best finish 1,129 in 2012) but not suddenly a “know it all” nor a giver of the perfect advice! Rather I want to say, keep going, keep the faith, don't panic and more than anything enjoy the ride, wherever it takes you!

I may be top, but I have issues with my team like anyone else, I have at least one rotation risk (Zouma) and worse at least two dropped players (Targett and McCarthy) and worst confused about the guy I thought was my star player (Mahrez). But it really is important not to panic, it took all of my will to take a -4 hit this week. Taking a -8 and getting 34 in a week really can hurt, so if you can avoid hits, then I suggest you do. Long term planning helps this I promise!

I wasn’t meaning to go on too long, so let me finish with one other random thought. Use this site for goodness sake! My goodness, when you can read stuff like "Sanchez underlying stats are unreal" the week before he scores 3 which is the week before he scores 2 it really can help keeping the faith. I thought he would come good sure, but a little stats to back it up really did help me not sell him at the wrong time! As I said once already, enjoy the ride. Will I enjoy being top of the league for a week (well two, thank you internationals for once!) sure I will, but whatever position you find yourself in enjoy the ride! Enjoy the unexpected assists from your keeper, the bench boast chip at exactly the right moment, and the triple captain on Payet when he scores a hatty! And remember, it’s only a game, but once heck of a beautiful game!

Well done to you. I had the pleasure of getting to WR2 and England No.1 late last season (Simon March kept me at bay and forced me to crash out in Differentialville eventually) and it certainly is a strange feeling. Since you have been playing a while just keep doing what you have been doing - don't change your style. I doubt the 13 guys in front are 100% happy with their teams either!

The midfield and forward line seem to be a done deal but I can't figure out whom to bring in for Targett, Richards and Williams.

I totally understand the appeal of Jaanmat, position stats etc. I just have this feeling that if i get him i will be sat there in 3 weeks time thinking 'why the f did i bring in a defender from the worst defense in the league. He scored well last year too i know but i personally feel the team is regressing further.

Note, if planning a wildcard soon fair play for a short term punt.

Should I keep Hazard (whose price is going down soon) till after Villa game? I don't have any FT. Will have to sell him any way to fund a new front man.

    Butland

    Kolarov, Cedric, Dawson

    Hazard*, Ayew, Sanchez, Mahrez, Payet

    Aguero, Ighalo

Subs: McCarthy, Jerome, Gomez, Richards 1.1 itb

--- Jerome must go. I wouldn't mind if he is nailed but their last game suggested otherwise.

    Hazard + Jerome > Mane + up to 9.3m

    Or Ayew + Jerome > ????

Hmm...tough one but I will say before. KDB may make up for the hit.
But do go with your gut. Do you think Hazard will score, now when the team is their absolute low? I don't think so. maybe a penalty at most.

Thanks mate. My gut says he will against Villa. I brought him in before Newcastle match for 3 "so-called easy" games. Willing to see it out.

I'm definitely in the Jammy camp. You can't look at stats from back to back CHE MCI. Against MCI he had a valid assist incorrectly ruled offside.

I see at least 2 clean sheets coming up. Team can defend! Did well against MAN and ARS

        1. Ser Davos
          • 8 Years

The options at the back are certainly less crowded than up top, which allows for a calculated punt. SAB sums it up though, your logic, foresight and reasoning are decent but I just know down the line I'll be thinking, "WTF was I thinking!?". Too many years of failure has left me long in the tooth.

Not ruling him out though, just don't think he's worth the risk in getting on the train too early.

Which week would you plan to WC this lot? May well affect my transfer move this week.

    Ruddy
    Kolarov, Bellerin, Huth
    Sanchez, Pedro, Mane, Mahrez
    Aguero, Pelle, Vardy

    Rudd, Sinclair, Coates, Targett

Yeah, that was my original plan, but I'm not sure if Id change to many of my starting 11 right now. Ruddy, Huth, Pedro + 1 of Mahrez/Vardy, otherwise I'm fairly set. Actually that's 4-5/11! The bench does also need a complete overhaul! On the want list would be the likes of Myhill, KDB, Payet, Mata, Lukaku, and perhaps Wally and Eriksen.

Any value on saving it until as late as possible?

Or just Huth -> Janmaat for a 2 week punt?

          • 10 Years
          8 years, 7 months ago

Gameweek 18 looks a good turning point too but its not as clear cut as 11.

            • 10 Years
            8 years, 7 months ago

I'm looking at Huth -> Janmaat or Coutinho -> Ayew as my two week punt so its good to see we're thinking on the same lines.

Yeah, both look decent punts to me. I have my eye on Ayew as well.

Any thoughts on Berty? Only 0.4m more than Janmaat and he's fairly attacking also (and obv has a much better chance of cleanies).

Have just enough cash for Targett/Pedro -> Berty/Wally (-4). Thoughts?

                • 10 Years
                8 years, 7 months ago

I like him but prefer Janmaat on the two week punt. Wally's looking good but on a hit maybe not.

That's an interesting double switch. Have the exact cash for Pedro/Targett -> Wally/Berty.

Worth a 4 pointer? Could well delay my WC as I'd be fairly set with this 11 (Ruddy aside)

        Ruddy
        Kolarov, Bellerin, Berty
        Sanchez, Mane, Wally, Mahrez
        Aguero, Pelle, Vardy

    Current team:

    Schmeichel (McCarthy)
    Bassong Francis Kolarov (Gomez Targett)
    Hazard Alexis Yaya Ayew Mahrez
    Ighalo Vardy Aguero

Crazy to do Yaya & Gomez -> Mane and Taylor / Williams (-4) and start Williams over Francis? Was tempted to take out Gomez -> Watford defender however I won't be starting him against Arsenal..

    1. Joggers Nipple
      • 14 Years

I have similar issues but some cash in the bank, have you any? Im looking Gomez to Bertrand.

How long is Yaya out for? I got rid last week but want him back. Gomez to a Watford defender makes sense on its own but you can probably make it through to the next game week and do it then if your 3 defenders are fit.

Who knows, the new Lpool manager might even start playing him??

      1. HammersXI

Sadly I do not have any cash in the bank. Thus it would be hard to get Bertrand in.

Yaya is supposedly back this weekend but there has been no news about that. I have 3 fit defenders but one of them is playing City. Hence another issue. Unless I use AOA though
