The Digest – Gameweek 8

Southampton’s display at Stamford Bridge serves notice of their potential ahead of some kind upcoming fixtures. Meanwhile, Sergio Aguero and Alexis Sanchez’ simultaneous return to form turns the Fantasy landscape on its head.

The Player

A five-goal blitz in just 20 minutes against Newcastle last Saturday served a telling reminder of Sergio Aguero’s talents as the Argentine cast aside his early-season toils emphatically.

There’s no doubt that Aguero had tested our collective patience. At a time where many mid-price frontman were flourishing, the City striker’s single goal and assist over the first seven Gameweeks were a major concern.

You only had to look at the underlying stats for reassurance, though. Between Gameweek 1-7, he was firing an effort every 19.7 minutes – almost on a par with last year’s 17.9 minutes per shot. Even his frequency of key passes (82.2 minutes compared to 80.1) was more or less identical.

Whereas last term, he netted 17.6% of his efforts on his way to 26 goals and ten assists, Aguero had scored just 4% of his shots before Steve McClaren’s boys paid visit last weekend, spurning all but one of his previous 25 attempts.

There were hints this was coming, though. Three goals and four assists over the previous international break for Argentina. Eight attempts and a late winner in City’s midweek Champions League win in Wolfsburg. Aguero was getting the chances.

In a season that’s proven unpredictable, Saturday’s 50-point armband haul shows just why Aguero is the one real must-have frontman for most Fantasy managers around these parts. With Bournemouth, Norwich and Villa in the next four Gameweeks alone, the bandwagon is in full flow as those who’d braved the Magpies match without him scramble for a belated piece of the action.

The Team

A 3-1 win over Chelsea at the Bridge heaped further pressure on Jose Mourinho as the Saints moved into the top half of the table for the first time this term.

After a slow start, blighted by a number of first-team departures over the summer, Ronald Koeman’s side have finally settled into their groove. The St Mary’s outfit have racked up eight goals in the last three matches, which also includes clashes with Swansea and Man United, and look well-stocked with form options to consider. Impressively, Graziano Pelle has played a part in ten (five goals, five assists) of their 13 goals for the season, whilst Sadio Mane’s two goals and five assists in four starts perhaps gives him the edge over Dusan Tadic in the centre of the park.

At the back, the return of Ryan Bertrand and addition of Virgil van Dijk has helped Koeman’s men rediscover the resilience which saw them concede just 33 times last term. Aside from their 3-2 reverse at home to United in Gameweek 6, Southampton have conceded a combined total of two goals in five of the last six Gameweeks – both came from dead-ball situations, a Gylfi Sigurdsson penalty and Willian free-kick.

Encouragingly, the about-turn in form arrives at a time when the fixtures smile very kindly on the Saints. Over the next eight Gameweeks, Koeman’s side are afforded four eye-catching home clashes (LEI, BOU, STO, AVL) and also travel to Sunderland and Palace. Investment at both ends of the pitch could well pay off, then, as they look build momentum on the back of their Chelsea destruction.

The Talking Point

Aguero’s return to scoring form arrives at a time where Alexis Sanchez has also banished his own barren run to rack up the goals for Arsenal. The Chilean followed up last week’s hat-trick at Leicester with a brace against United to soar up the Fantasy standings after a similarly sluggish start to 2015/16.

Taking the midweek Champions League matches into consideration, the South American duo have scored six times apiece in their last three appearances. Few, if any, top-flight talents can match that explosive potential and it’s fair to say that their recent resurgence has shaken up the Fantasy landscape.

Those who filled their 15-man squads with mid-price and budget form players, thus choosing to ignore one or both of Aguero and Sanchez, now face a major restructuring program if they are to bring the pair on board. Indeed, it’s no real surprise that the duo lead the way for transfers-in this week in the FPL game.

In this most unpredictable of seasons, there’s a reassuring sense of normality settling in once again. Those who have steadfastly held onto both and kept faith in the underlying numbers have been finally rewarded – it’s perhaps no coincidence that this recent turnaround has helped the Fantasy Football Scout leagues climb the leaderboards, an indication of our community’s faith in the big hitters.

Yes, it’s a belated victory for the so-called “template” approach. A triumph that’s been somewhat tainted by those preceding weeks of frustration and uncertainty but we’ll take it anyway. After suffering for the first two months, you could almost say we deserve it.

Everything fine, except Hazard for me, although perhaps he will start scoring more soon. I haven't had him all season, I was waiting for him to explode and it just hasn't happened yet.

Keep an eye on Kolorov, he may lose out to Clichy soon. I would save your FT and wait until after next gameweek, you will many more options then.

But Butland for me on fixtures.

    McCarthy
    Darmian Kolarov Richards Gomez Naughton
    Hazard Sanchez Payet Mahrez
    Aguero Martial Wilson.

So I kept hold of Wilson and Gomez to avoid a hit and not have 2Fts. I don't mind taking a -4 .. What is my best options guys ?

It's always going to be a question mark with Sagna from now on, might just be worth jumping ship to Kolarov?

So City defence is out of bounds now is what you're saying? Not sure Kolarov is under the same threat from Clichy as Sagna is from Zabaleta considering current form. Rest of city defence is too expensive IMO

Clichy is much better defensively then kolorov, would actually say sagna has a better chance to play then kolarov when all full backs are fit. My opinion though

I'm expecting to have Kolarov for BOU but then not much more, unfortunately. Clichy can;t be far away from training again, and he has 2 weeks to get going now too.

Yeah I suppose international break helps him, will be interesting to see if there's any news from that direction. Perhaps a shift away from City defence and a triple-up further up the park might be in order once if he does indeed start to get rotated (and they keep freely scoring, that is)

My combo is currently a mess. I have Kompany, Kolarov, and Aguero. Keep holding Kompany, while missing out on KDB. Kompany, KDB, Aguero will be the dream when all fit.

    Only players I would think about selling are;

    Ruddy
    Jevans

    Deeney.

With a sell value of £29.1m who would you replace them with?

Depends on the rest of your team

Ighalo is a good replacement for deeney

        Butland
        Kol, Cedric, Souare, Francis
        Haz, Ayew, Mahrez
        Kun, Pelle

I've been looking at Ighalo! However, I really want KDB for Sterling but it means downgrading somewhere...

  12. What the Bookies Say - GWK 8 review
    Your Mum's Athletic
    • 12 Years
    8 years, 7 months ago

Good morning all, hope everyone is doing fine. Let's take a look back at an incredible GW8 with 'what the bookies say':

    - An incredible 6 of the top 10 FFS captain poll delivered attacking returns this week with one of them (Mahrez) not featuring at all.

    - Only 3 (Arsenal, Stoke and Palace) teams kept clean sheets this week, continuing the trend where clean sheets are hard to come by, emphasising the need to invest funds in your midfielders and attackers.

    - 3 predicted results with no correct scores is slightly dissapointing but the PL this season is very unpredictable, it almost seems like any team can beat anyone right now.

    - Only a Sakho goal away from winning the anytime goalscorer treble with the win double both resulting in draws.

    Stats:

    - Chelsea have conceded at least two goals in seven of their eight Premier League games this season

    - Chelsea did not have a shot in the second half until the 77th minute

    - Liverpool have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last eight games in all competitions.

    - Liverpool have won just one of their last nine away Premier League games (D4 L4).

    - I love Aguero and Sanchez 😆

    - Fifteen of the 18 goals (for and against) in Palace's Premier League games this season have come in the second half.

    - Villa have picked up just one point in their last seven Premier League games, drawing one and losing six.

    - Murray's goal was the first Watford have conceded in the first half of a league game this season

    - Ighalo has now netted 21 goals in 26 league games in 2015, more than any other player in the top four divisions

    - Steve McClaren has won just two of his past 21 league games as a manager (W2 D9 L10 - eight games at Newcastle, 13 at Derby County).

    - Aguero now has 84 Premier League goals; the same number as Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez.

    - Only two of Norwich's 17 shots in this game were on target

    - Leicester City have won 11 Premier League games since the start of April - only Manchester City (12) have more.

    - Payet has had a hand in 14 goals (five goals, nine assists) in his past 16 league appearances (Premier League & Ligue 1 combined).

GW9 will take on a slightly different approach. Enjoy the International break. Giggity

Pretty happy with the rest of my team, but what would you do with this defence with 1.1m in the bank? Have got one FT this week assuming no international injuries...

    Myhill (McCarthy)
Kolarov - Williams - Evans (Richards - Francis)

I'm chickening out on my double west Brom defence now, so Evans out for somebody maybe? Bertrand could be a good shout do you reckon?

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Coping with multi-Fantasy Football.

I'm playing Fantasy Premier League, Ultimate Fantasy Premier League, Sky Sports Fantasy Football, Sun DT, ESPN and Dugout FC draft game.

I'm doing pretty badly in most, although things are looking up after Gwk 8 in FPL - my main one.

How many games are you playing? How is it effecting your overall performance?

Which do you prefer - the season long games like FPL, or those where you can make in week changes like Sky and UFPL. Do you like weekly games, such as those run by FantasyBet, The Sun and others?

promised myself I would focus more on sky this year, but already made my first mistake this week by not saving my cap and keeping it on aguero without realising it was international break so I would have been able to swap it back.
I stopped playing the sun after they allowed people to have unlimited teams, it was then all about their profits

I am in the same boat as you. A few years ago I was playing more than one game and I didn't like my rivals and I owning different players in each game. It meant I was thinking things like 'Gerrard has scored which is good for me in this game because of x and bad for me in this game because of y'. I prefer to go into the weekend knowing which outcomes I want and which ones I don't which makes things simpler if no less disappointing.

FPL is my main game. I'm playing sky for the first time as my mates invited me but just give it a cursory glance in comparison to FPL.

I play stuff like Fantasy Bet occasionally for their free games but i just don't have the time to play anymore or dedicate a lot of time to the other games.

My wife gives me enough grief over FPL as it is without adding more things to think about...

Last year I did FPL, Sky, Telegraph and ITeam after enjoying their World Cup game. My FPL rank suffered as I had my worst ever finish at 171k... ITeam is a very hands-on game involving rotating 3 players a week. It was too much over a season!

So this year I'm just doing FPL, Sky and Dream team which is fairly low maintenance. Also had a few weekly Dream Team punts but not that bothered really with that.

I want to get back to the top 10-20k area in FPL which will involve a lot of work as currently at 440k!

Forgot to brag that I did well in Sky last year and the year before - 650th in 2013/14 and last year 352nd overall even whilst playing four games. So quite why I should do so well in that but plummet in FPL is anyone's guess! GW8 had a lot to do with it last year as I had no Aguero and no Soton players. This year Aguero was firmly captained for GW8 and it paid off! 🙂

My issue with playing too many games is it ends up diluting my enjoyment of each. I cheer a mane goal because i have him in one format but i don't have him in another format and have the defence he scored against, etc. I also find pre season a bit stressful with more than one format, too many decisions. Rest of season not so bad unless on WC.

Ive just joined a draft league so will see how i find that as a double up with fpl

My main game is FPL. That's the one I care about, am in mini leagues, and pay real attention to.

I have a Sky team, but that's mostly to see if I can avoid the urge to tinker and see where it gets me.

My other "just for fun" one this season is Fantasy iTeam - for Premier League I use that as my "too scared to punt on them in FPL" players. I like the 2 transfers per week, which you can play in between matches during the gameweek. I like the balance I can get in the team. And - most of all - it has a really good Champions League game as well.

Apparently I set up a Sun Dream Team at some point...oh dear...

Fpl and also a draft league. Fpl is the main one to
Pay attention to but the draft league at least allows us to
Play around and take it less seriously.

Plus they are the same scoring format but entirely different play styles, both easy to
Comprehend but also different enough to to be entertaining.

I play just about all the games I can register for from the US in addition to organizing my own draft league using FPL scoring.

As I side note, since I doubt we're doing "Rough with the Smooth" this week, I took a terrible beating in my draft league to the owner of De Bruyne, Cabaye, and Sanchez (C). However, I tempered that disappointment with the smoothest of Mahrez replacements on Mondogoal after lineups were released: Sergio Aguero. Earned myself $75 by stacking him with De Bruyne!

Just FPL. It takes up enough of my time as it is.

That'll probably activate a chunk of money to be paid to Monaco, such was the ridiculousness of some clauses in the deal!

What to do with my free transfer?

      Begovic Elliot
      Kolarov Cresswell Dawson Williams Nyom
      Sanchez KDB Payet Mahrez Hoolahan
      Aguero Diouf* Berahino

      £0 in the bank

Concerns over Diouf's ability to stay fit and Berahino's chances at playing full 90mins.

Also Cresswell currently not worth his price tag, same with Begovic but wondering whether i should just stick it out.
Otherwise looking at doing Cress > Bertrand or something like that
OR i could do Cresswell + Berahino > Berty + Vardy for a hit

here is a question for you all
for those who support a top flight team would you rather your team won the premiership or you won FPL?
and the same question again but knowing neither will happen again for the next 25 years?
(Liverpool fans can tell you how this feels 😉 )

I would rather win FPL anyday

As a newcastle fan, I was celebrating each Aguero(c) goal so i guess that means FPL...

In a fantasy football context, who would you pick?

      Alan Shearer

      or Thierry Henry

Im heavily biased but id 100% pick Henry

Which of these two would you recommend ?

      A. Cedric to Janmaat
      B. Milner downgrade and Richards to Janmaat (-4)

Thanks for the answers.. Think option B would actually involve Ruddy to Hennessy rather than Milner out. Still for a hit

Will kolarov be replaced by clichy after the international break?
His being a good points scorer but I fear about the rotation

City backline is rotation risk as a whole, except Kompany is nailed when fit.

        Replaced indicates taking over 100%.
But Clichy will start PL games at the cost of Kolarov in 2015

If Kompany is still out when City play Bournemouth, I can foresee the cherries giving them a good game.

3-2 to city is my prediction.

Deal with Pedro, or Gomez? I'm tempted to go AOA as Nyom and Francis both have iffy fixtures..

      Myhill
      Kolarov Nyom
      Pedro Sanchez Mahrez Mata Westwood
      Aguero(c) Martial Vardy

      McCarthy Francis Gomez Saylor

Pedro>Mane or just get Gomez gone and be done with it? Toby looks best bet to me, or Van Dijk?

      Play 3:

      A) Kolorov
      B) Zouma
      C) Janmaat
      D) Evans

Currently on A,B and C due to no news on the Evans injury but if he is declared fit would you play him? Always a chance Zouma is benched anyway.

Lost 0.1 on Gomis last nite because I'm afraid of injuries over international break
