THE FANTASY FOOTBALL SCOUT LEAGUES ROUND-UP

With the second international break of the season upon us, we’re afforded time to assess the leading contenders in the Fantasy Football Scout leagues across a variety of games. With leagues in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Ultimate Fantasy Premier League and Sky Sports, there’s plenty to catch up on.

FANTASY PREMIER LEAGUE

Courtesy of a 129-point haul, Samuel Slennett surged to the summit of the Scout League. Aside from the Sergio Aguero (captain) and Alexis Sanchez combo, Samuel – who’s now ranked 14th in the overall rankings – profited from Yohan Cabaye, David Silva, Dimitri Payet and Graziano Pelle. Clean sheets from Jack Butland and Pape Souare rounded off his impressive total. To join our FPL league, which has risen to the summit of the Best Leagues, use the code 600-520.

Jason Smith slipped to second place despite bagging an impressive 90 points. He, too, had Aguero and Sanchez among his ranks but opted to hand the captain’s armband to Payet instead. Andre Ayew and Odion Ighalo delivered the goods, but his back four served up just seven points between them.

Patryk Ostrowski moved up the bronze-medal position after accuring 103 points. Aguero (captain), Sanchez, Payet and Pelle produced the bulk of his attacking returns, while Stoke defender Geoff Cameron afforded Patryk his solitary clean sheet.

Sitting just four points shy of the top three, Jamie Geraghty tallied 102 points in Gameweek 8. Glenn Murray put him through the wringer by following up his first goal of the campaign with a penalty miss, while Eden Hazard claimed a handy assist. Aguero (captain), Sanchez, Ighalo and Payet were Jamie’s star men.

Fifth-placed Mark Elias also captained Aguero but plumped for Kevin De Bruyne ahead of Sanchez. Jamie Vardy and Hector Bellerin combined for 16 points to give Mark’s squad a different flavour to those managers above him.

FPL Members Scout League

Niclas Andersson ranks top of the Member’s League and 114th overall after chalking up 118 points. Although his three defenders and keeper tallied just seven points between, all of Niclas’ front seven scored seven points or more, with Mane, Ighalo and Vardy among them.

Jon Mjelde fronts the chasing pack. He decided against captaining Aguero – choosing Sanchez instead – but still carded 112 points. Vardy and Ighalo underlined the merits of recruiting budget forwards, while Mane flexed his differential muscles.

Third-placed Andrew Dougan bagged 117 points, with Bellerin and Butland serving up some welcome shut-out points at the back. Andrew used his bench boost chip to little effect, given that Alex McCarthy and Riyad Mahrez were no-shows, while Nathan Redmond and Wes Morgan recorded three points between them.

Edd Stobbart boasted a Gameweek rank of 1603 by way of his 130 points. His Sanchez-less team delivered big points in midfield with Payet, Ayew, De Bruyne and Mesut Ozil. Edd’s three-man strike force – consisting of Aguero (captain), Ighalo and Pelle – registered 73 points as a unit.

Euan Thompson climbed into the top five, with a host of familiar faces harvesting his 118 points. Jonjo Shelvey and Wayne Hennessey injected Euan’s squad with some nice variation to the template.

Ultimate Fantasy Premier League

Ryan Evans sits at the summit of our Ultimate Fantasy Premier League ladder and, with 671 points overall, he’s also the top ranked manager in the game with a seven point lead over his nearest rival.

Catherine Wright sits second in our league, some 24 points behind Ryan earning her a sixth place ranking in the world. Panna Fricker just two points behind her in third in our on 645, eighth overall.

There’s then a gap of ten points to Dominic Nelson in fourth and 15th in the world after a huge 145 point return in Gameweek 8. Joe Stout completes our top five on 629 and an overall rank of 25th in the world.

To join this league, use the League Code: 1258-516.

SKY SPORTS FANTASY FOOTBALL

Lesley Young (607 points) boasts an extraordinary 70-point lead over second placed Stephen Lambert (537) in our Scout League, with the former ranking fourth in the overall leaderboard. Alan Wood (535) is positioned just two points behind Stephen in the bronze-medal berth. The winner of our Sky league, which currently sits fifth in the League of Leagues, wins £1,000. Sun Dream Team

Charles Mouzon enjoys a two-point lead at the peak of the Sun Scout League, having racked up 81 points last Gameweek. Manchester United duo Memphis Depay and Anthony Martial flattered to deceive, but Aguero, Sanchez, De Bruyne and Payet all came up trumps.

With a mighty 99 points this time around, David O Byrne is applying pressure to the leader. Aguero, Sanchez and Pelle formed the perfect trio of forwards, while Sadio Mane, Silva and Hazard completed his high-powered offense.

Not content with just leading the pack, Charles Mouzon’s Manchester United focused team sits in third position. In a roster comprised of five Red Devils recruits, Branislav Ivanovic and Christian Benteke, the likes of Aguero, Sanchez and Mane rescued his 54-point haul.

Tim Mongiat is three points adrift of the podium after a strong showing last time out. Chris Smalling, Matteo Darmian, Depay and Rooney all failed to hit the mark, yet Aguero and Sanchez and Mane helped him on the way to 73 points.

Capping off the top five, Nigel Dodds slid down the rankings due to a 46-point weekend. Nigel’s five Red Devils’ recruits restricted his scoring potential, but Aguero, Pelle and Mane ensured that not all was lost.

    Top 5 PpGs last season

    Aguero 6.5
    Hazard 6.1
    Silva 6.0
    Sanchez 5.9
    Costa 5.8

    .
    Martial's PpG after 4 games: 6.25

Not sure why he gets slated as an FPL option when his only blank was against Arsenal away. 'I told you he was a bad pick' and 'I'm glad I didn't get him' just seems like confirmation bias to me.

too small or a sample but agreed that writing him off is silly. wouldn't expect him to main 6.25 ppg over a season.

        No, neither me.

But it's too soon to write him off after 4 games, especially when he's had such a strong start.

Its not writing him off thats the problem but writing him in so early.

There's more than one way to play the game. You can play safe and only get recent high scorers who are long-term proven, or you can try and predict who will be the next high scorers. The latter is more risky but more rewarding.

              • 10 Years
              8 years, 8 months ago

You've got to manage your risk in fpl to do well, too many long shots and you do well for a bit before coming up as the next Icarus. Too dull and your destined for 10-30K take your risks, but that was a poor one.

Shouldn't write him off, that's silly. A talented forward who doesn't cost that much playing in what looks to be a nailed on role up top for United. I'll be getting him when fixtures turn.

19 year old kid with an unspectacular goalscoring record . Too smaller sample to make that 6.25 mean anything

Apart from the goals he has scored, he hasnt looked threatening at all. Good overall play so far but bar that chance against cech everything points to his goals being rather fortunous

You are so so wrong by saying he hasnt looked threatening at all! He could easily have got 2 assists, one for Memphis and another for Rooney in that Sunderland match. He is creating chances too.

I am just waiting for everyone to sell him over the next 2 gameweeks and then for the fixtures to turn in his favour from gw11 when he would explode!

Its a bloody four game sample of end product not even underlying stats for a 19 year old and we know how four game sampling worked out for Doosra and Aguero. Smh Giggs Boson.

Players with better ppg in the last four gameweeks than Martial:

      Sanchez 10.3
      Payet 9.8
      Pelle 9.3
      KdB 8.8
      Vardy 8.3
      Aguero 8.3
      Ighalo 8.3
      Mata 7.3
      Mane 7.0
      Cabaye 6.8
      Lukaku 6.8
      Walcott 6.5
      Ozil 6.3

Thats 5 forwards and 8 mids better than him in that sample size and I bet most outscore him over the season too.

      1. Piggs Boson
        • 12 Years
        8 years, 8 months ago

But my point was that it was a small sample!! It's too small a sample to write him off like so many have.

I'm not for one second saying he'll maintain those levels! 😀

He's getting slated as his stats are not great and he is a kid new to fpl under a nut job manager and playing for a team that are nit creating chances.

Fwiw I think he looks like he could make a good player in time but silly to pick him for fpl with no track record and poor fixtures imo

As said above, dont write him off but a million people should not have been bringing him in after two weeks. Especially with Arsenal (a) Everton (a) Man City (h) coming up.

All his early goals say to me is that he's a better prospect than Sanogo was at Arsenal. How much better, who knows?

Yeah but back to my original point, its a signing based on potential not current talent, who knows where Martial will end up, decent PL striker in a few years time or World beater or complete flop? There's so much unknown.

Sanogo also was an inferior player in Ligue 1, and had to go down to Ligue 2 to score some goals before Arsenal bought him.

Dude, his team went down to Ligue 2 before he started to actually get minutes. To his defence can be said that he was 19 when they went down and he _did_ score _a_ Ligue 1 goal before it.

His big chances stats were strong, and as Jonty said recently, big chances and shots on target are the key stats for goals.

United had scored more goals than any other team in the previous 3, and have good goalscoring records against Arsenal and City. I don't understand why so many are so opposed to him, that's all.

He is an option, even with those fixtures. For those that like to take a gamble.

              • 10 Years
              8 years, 8 months ago

I'd contest they weren't that strong, they were okay on a two game hot streak. Ryan Mason's done more in slightly more minutes this term.

Man U had 5 goals in their previous 4 visits to the emirates and 6 goals in their last 4 home games to City, I don't call that a good record and United were really lucky to even get goals in some of those Emirates matches.

I'd have to see team situations on a team by team basis but my contention is that there weren't a million squads in such good condition with no other pressing issues that they could gamble on a new boy.

I think the only people who could possibly think he is a good pick are Utd fans. Personally I don't have any real loyalty to any epl team which is a blessing in these kind of situations.

Ps this is the same Jonty who used to swear by touches in the box as a metric to judge how likely a player was to score. I like Jonty and he has a good knowledge on football in general but I think even he would agree he is no statistician

You only need to look at Jonty's FPL history. He's one of the best FPL players in the game.

I've spoken to many non-United fans who swear by Martial. Don't you think he's looked impressive?

Yeah Jonty is an excellent fpl manager (one of the best I've seen in the last few years) but I think that is more to do with his football knowledge coupled with his aversion to risk than his understanding of statistics. Maybe I'm wrong and he has a PhD in mathematics (not that you would necessarily need that).

Just thought I'd post some stats to give this situation a new angle. And I knew it would be a topic that would rile up a few people for a debate 🙂

He's high on my watchlist but there are two others at the same price point that best him for me.

Last night I was looking at my week 11 wildcard and this was my order of preference for strikers:

              Weeks 11 to 16

              1) Aguero: NOR avl LIV SOT sto SWA
              2) Pelle---: BOU sun STO mci AVL cpl

I agree with that list. They look the best bets.

Unfortunately stats can't predict the future though, so time will tell how they actually perform on the day, with the grass under their feet.

That's of course true and looking at your team I'd say you were in a good place to take Martial as you didn't have any warning lights elsewhere, I've got to say I think your Mata pick was three weeks too early considering you already picked Martial. To an extent they'll rise and fall together Mata assisting Martial and Martial winning Mata penalties but these fixture were too much risk for the double up IMO.

I'm actually considering Martial->Pelle this week.

I thought United would score against Arsenal, hence the gamble on the double up. Wrong call. Didn't work out on the day.

He was a teenager who only started 50% of his league appearances last season, and in a lot of those appearances he wasn't the lead striker.

There's also the fact that Monaco were one of the most defensive outfits in Europe and Ligue 1 is a notoriously low scoring league.

Surely that basic history is to be expected? He was 19.

For me, it was a punt on him delivering a haul v Sunderland, and I was selling Benteke, who was injured.

Didn't quite work, but I'll be getting him back when Utd's fixtures turn nice, think it can probably wait til GW13 although from GW11 is still good.

Very enjoyable discussion. We're really all saying the same thing, but emphasising a different part of it: Martial is a terrific talent who started very strong, but is reverting to the mean; and that mean will, over the season, probably be pretty good, but not as good as his first two games, because that would be impossible.

He's worth buying; he's also worth not buying. The best timing for doing that, at the best price, can be argued about. It's a fine judgement call, which is where all the fun is in this game...

Martial is a very mature players for his age, his reading of the game is pretty good, i expect him to score 10+ goals this season, he will score for UTD in their tough fixtures coming up. (non utd fan here)

I'm eating humble pie. I discarded him when UTD signed him, however, I've watched him few times this season, what strikes me is; he's a goal scorer and his positional play is brilliant for his age, he very good at losing his marker.

If you have him in your team, don't transfer out.

Martial owners, wanna be owners, wanna sell he had most penalty area touches (PAT) this GW with 17 leading everyone. No one even came close.

Now, here me out. Where there is small sample, like in Martial case, PAT has the highest correlation with goals and fpl pts long term.

I see there a lot of potential honestly. Can't wait the masses to sell him, I might and probably will get him, when they abort him.

Furthermore PAT have decent R to goals anyway. Personally I like what I see. Top 4 first choice striker, mid priced with solid stats and high sealing.

Like what I see and I am glad people are letting him go 😉

Shots on target yes but when there is larger sample. Total SoT even for the full season is too small a sample. At the beginning it's better to look PAT and SiB. Trust me, I am stat nerd 😉

What you're trying to say is that future goals are better correlated to historic indicators that are bigger. Smaller numbers like SoT, while better correlated to goals historically, have too much short term variability to be a good indicator of future SoT.

Which raises the question: hey baby, are we losing touch?

FWIW most of the Arsenal fans I've spoken to think he's 1st choice and Mert and Kos will be rotated/injured around him

Only reason I got in Zouma was because of his attacking threat; I honestly thought Maureen would tighten up after getting a CS against Arsenal.

How can I enter the scout league? I am a member here since the beginning of the season...

I believe the league code is in the article above.

It is - 600-520 for the scout league. For the members one, follow the advice below...

So, Chelsea have eight points from eight games. No team has ever finished higher than fifth in the Premier League after starting like this. The average finishing position from this start is 14th.

Going back the last 15 years, the average number of points 4th place has ended with is a touch over 69. So Chelsea need to secure 61 points from the remaining 90 to match that. Note that 4 of the last 8 seasons have seen 4th place finish with at least 72 though (most notably in 13/14 when Arsenal was 4th with 79 points).

Should be an exciting season for a new reason, as I don't see them giving up.

I think "points behind" at this stage rather than places would be more telling. Also I can't imagine many of the other teams on 8 from 8 had the quality Chelski have

I agree but that would require far more work than I've put in to write this post and being at work I don't have enough time for THAT kind of break 😛

I'm beginning to doubt your commitment to this topic, Sinik. I expect a full statistical breakdown of every PL champion at the weekend 😉

I can only commit to considering tackling the issue. 😉

I need Pelle in my team. Unfortunately I didn't do it Saturday night so now I can't get Mane in for 7/8, he's now 0.1 too expensive.

Who's the best middy for 7.8m or under? I have Payet and Mahrez and I'd be replacing Pedro.

Pedro has Villa at home......might not be the worst thing to hold a week.!?

Hmm but didn't start last time out. Wish I had the funds to dive straight in on Pelle but Southampton just look too hot to ignore right now.

It's also the question if he is even in the starting XI

I really enjoy voting up just one guy in a debate. Just so I can wind up the other one. I dont even care to read the entire conversation sometimes. Shameful, I know, and I am ashamed.

This is why I miss the downvote button..Whenever there was heated words between 2 posters I used love sitting back and getting a -1 in quick only to watch the madness unfold from there 🙂

Before the Arsenal game I was excited that I was going to my 1st United away match in 3 years (at Goodison) then it's the Derby

    Now I'm nervous

Man United have the best chance since Ferguson left I reckon.
