The Watchlist Updated – Gameweek 11 – The Defence

On the back of Gameweek 10, which saw Man United and West Brom collect further clean sheets, and Leicester and Sunderland pick up their first shut-outs of the campaign, we’re rolling out the first of our Watchlist articles, which offer player recommendations for the next four-to-six Gameweeks. With form and fixtures aligning perfectly, Arsenal’s defensive assets are on the rise, while the goal threat of Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk is certainly catching our eye.

GOALKEEPERS

With three clean sheets in his last four appearances, and with the upcoming fixture list (cpl, WBA, wat, lei, WHM, bou) very favourable, Man United’s David de Gea climbs all the way to the top of our ladder. The former Atletico Madrid keeper, available at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), is living up to his price tag at the moment, and looks an outstanding option for the coming period.

Another “heavy hitter” on the rise is Arsenal’s Petr Cech, who has registered five shut outs so far this season. The 5.6-priced stopper faces the most favourable upcoming schedule (swa, TOT, wba, nor, SUN, avl) for clean sheets over the next six Gameweeks, according to our Season Ticker, and, like de Gea, looks worthy of the extra outlay at this juncture of the season.

On the back of another lacklustre Chelsea display at West Ham, Asmir Begovic sees his stock fall slightly this week. The Bosnian’s 5.0 price tag in FPL is still likely to attract suitors, while the next six matches for the champions (LIV, sto, NOR, tot, BOU, lei) should offer up some strong opportunities for clean sheets. With Jose Mourinho’s side struggling so badly during the opening months of the season, though, it’s hard to fully trust any of their Fantasy assets.

Joe Hart keeps his place towards the top of our rankings after collecting another clean sheet in the Manchester derby. Whether the England keeper represents the best way to use one of our three Man City slots remains open for debate, but with the next six fixtures for Manuel Pellegrini’s men (NOR, avl, LIV, SOT, sto, SWA) pretty favourable, the 5.7-valued Hart should continue to rack up the points for his 21% ownership in FPL.

Having recovered from a back injury to face Liverpool, Southampton’s Maarten Stekelenburg is back in our thoughts in our latest update. The Dutch international should benefit from a very favourable run of fixtures for the Saints (BOU, sun, STO, mci, AVL, cpl) and, setting us back only 5.0 in FPL, should attract some investment over the next few weeks.

With Everton’s difficult start to the campaign now behind them, Tim Howard keeps climbing up our ladder. The fixture list over the next six Gameweeks (SUN, whm, AVL, bou, CPL, nor) is very favourable, so the 5.1-rated USA international, who has already managed shut-outs against Southampton, Tottenham and Swansea, looks a solid option in the mid-price bracket.

Although Tottenham’s fixtures (AVL, ars, WHM, CHE, wba, NEW) aren’t as kind as the likes of Everton’s and Southampton’s, Hugo Lloris is another mid-price option who appears worthy of consideration. The France international has seen his cost rise to 5.1 in FPL this week, and with Spurs looking a much improved defensive unit this term, the former Lyon keeper should be a reliable option between the sticks.

One budget keeper who continues to bring in the defensive returns is Watford’s Heurelho Gomes. The Brazilian international chalked up his fourth shut-out of the campaign at Stoke last weekend, and while the Hornets’ fixtures over the upcoming period (WHM, lei, MUN, avl, NOR, sun) are mixed, the 4.6-valued keeper certainly looks one of the most consistent options available to Fantasy managers in the budget price range.

Sunderland’s Costel Pantilimon (4.8) returns in our latest refresh, having picked up his first clean sheet of the season against Newcastle on Sunday. It may have been slightly fortuitous, with the Magpies the far superior side before Fabricio Coloccini’s sending off, but with signs that Sam Allardyce is already making the Black Cats harder to break down, the Romania international is starting to become a viable option in goal. Sunderland also face some favourable home fixtures in their next six (eve, SOT, cpl, STO, ars, WAT).

While he may be the highest scoring keeper so far this season in FPL with 57 points, West Brom’s Boaz Myhill falls all the way to the bottom of our rankings with the Baggies upcoming schedule over the next six Gameweeks (LEI, mun, ARS, whm, TOT, liv) particularly treacherous. The Wales international is actually the most transferred in goalkeeper this week in FPL with over 13,000 new owners, though the 4.8-rated stopper may have to mainly rely on save points over that testing period.

DEFENDERS

Keeping his position on top of our defenders ladder is Arsenal’s Hector Bellerin, despite only managing two points in the Gunners 2-1 win against Everton in Gameweek 10. Ahead of the aforementioned favourable run of fixtures over the next few weeks, the Spaniard has attracted over 41,000 new owners so far this week in FPL, seeing his price rise to 5.9. With his attacking raids down the right flank a key part of the Arsenal attack, Bellerin looks primed to register returns at both ends of the pitch.

Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk is our big climber this week, with the centre-back offering a significant threat from set-pieces. The Dutch international has registered five goal attempts over the last four Gameweeks, with four coming from inside the box, and combined with a reasonable chance of defensive returns, given the Saints’ favourable fixture list (BOU, sun, STO, mci, AVL, cpl), the 5.5-priced defender undoubtedly holds plenty of upside. His meagre 1% ownership in FPL also makes him a huge differential, only further enhancing his appeal.

Seamus Coleman keeps his place towards the top of our rankings, despite the Toffees having failed to keep a clean sheet in their last four matches. The Republic of Ireland international has only had two goal attempts and created one chance since returning from injury, but with his attacking threat expected to increase against lesser opposition, the 5.9-valued right-back should be able to provide attacking returns over the coming period.

Following his return to first-team action against Man United, Aleksandar Kolarov moves up a couple of spots this time around. With Bacary Sagna and Pablo Zabaleta both fit, and Gael Clichy close to returning from an ankle injury, the Serbian is a slight rotation risk, but with his attacking potential from left-back and likely defensive returns from the next six matches (NOR, avl, LIV, SOT, sto, SWA), the 6.1-rated defender looks worth holding on to by his sizeable 27% ownership in FPL.

A new face on the Watchlist this week is Leicester’s Jeffrey Schlupp, who comes onto our radars because of his out-of-position potential. The Ghana international has been pushed forward to an attacking role on the left for the Foxes in recent weeks, while he also ended Saturday’s match against Crystal Palace in the number ten role, and leads all defenders for goal attempts over the last four Gameweeks, with nine. While there are no guarantees Claudio Ranieri will keep playing the 5.0-priced defender in a more advanced position, the fixtures in the short-term (wba, WAT, new) in particular perhaps warrant a gamble being taken on Schlupp.

It may come as a slight surprise that Chris Smalling is the second highest scoring defender in FPL with 51 points, given he is still yet to open his account for the campaign. Nonetheless, with clean sheets being racked up at Old Trafford, the England international certainly looks worthy of some consideration for our five-man backlines, although his 6.4 price tag in FPL will perhaps be too high for some to stomach.

While Newcastle’s rearguard shows little sign of improvement, the attacking potential of Daryl Janmaat means he doesn’t fall too far down our ladder. The 4.9-valued right-back has created eight chances over the last four Gameweeks, second among defenders, and has a reasonable run of fixtures (STO, bou, LEI, cpl, LIV, tot), particularly in the short-term, to provide good value at the back.

The other leading chance creator over recent weeks has been Liverpool’s Alberto Moreno. The former Sevilla defender has provided 10 key passes in his last four outings, and while clean sheets could be hard to come by, given the difficulty of the Reds’ upcoming schedule (che, CPL, mci, SWA, new, WBA), a 4.7 price tag looks something of a bargain based on his attacking potential alone.

Similar to his Chelsea team-mate Begovic, Kurt Zouma is a faller this week with the general malaise at Stamford Bridge showing few signs of coming to an end. The 5.5-rated defender played at right-back at West Ham, and could benefit from the license to push forward should he continue in that position. Given their lack of form, though, investing in any member of the Chelsea backline at this point looks something of a gamble.

Tottenham’s Eric Dier is a slight riser in our latest refresh, with the England U21 international restored in the double-pivot at Bournemouth having served his one-match suspension. The 5.2-priced defender has found the back of the net twice this season, and with the afore-mentioned run of fixtures (AVL, ars, WHM, CHE, wba, NEW) ahead for Mauricio Pochettino’s side over the next month or so, Dier holds reasonable potential at either end of the pitch.

Having registered his third assist of the campaign in West Ham’s 2-1 victory against Chelsea, Aaron Cresswell is back in our thoughts. The Hammers haven’t kept a clean sheet since the 2-0 win against Newcastle in Gameweek 5, though, so while the former Ipswich man can deliver attacking points, he’ll need to start getting more shut-outs if he is to prove worthy of his 5.6 price tag in FPL. The fixture list over the next six Gameweeks (wat, EVE, tot, WBA, mun, STO) should enable Slaven Bilic’s men to get back on track at the back.

With Crystal Palace generally looking solid in defence barring the 3-1 defeat to West Ham when they were reduced to 10-men for much of the match, Scott Dann clings onto the final spot in our rankings. The forthcoming fixtures for the Eagles (MUN, liv, SUN, NEW, eve, SOT) only throw up two favourable match-ups, against Sunderland and Newcastle, but with his duel threat from set-plays and through bonus points, having accrued seven so far this season, the 5.1-valued centre-back remains a viable option for FPL bosses.

Valar posted previously that he had not had more than 2pts from his gk at any point this season after switching between three gk's (lei, swa and che I think?). I was wondering if there was a lesson here for us all?

Personally I really don't think it will pay to rotate gk's for easier fixtures this season. If you look at it the gks that have scored double figures in games have done it in fixtures that you would not expect them to get a cs.

With the extra bonus points for gks I reckon we will all be just keeping gks from teams capable of backs to the wall cs against opposition teams that are better than them and looking forward to the more difficult fixtures in the hopes of them picking up the odd 12-15pt haul.

I really think this is a very significant shift in the game and it will lead to the death of rotating gk's in the future.

    Any thoughts?

Well, I have rotated Butland and Fabianski, and now Butland and Gomes, after contemplating Hennessey.

It has sort of worked, but not spectacularly.

Exactly doos, this has been accepted as the preferred strategy up until now but with the bonus points for gk's coming much more easily in the tough fixture where they get a cs you will miss out on some big hauls by rotating I reckon.

You see I think the likes of costel will be a perfect gk to have through any fixture as you know big sam will have them defending for their lives in the tougher fixtures so they will get the odd cs which will be loads of bonus for him.

I like adrian too as ye're manager seems happy to sit back and defend in the bigger games where you wouldn't expect a cs and again this leads to bonus.

It is the rotation thing that I think we have to get away from regardless of who we do decide to go with.

Wow that really illustrates what a good option Pantilimon could be Doos thanks. He has had only 9 saves from inside the box yet 14 from outside. A team that is forcing the opposition to shoot from outside the box more should lead to a bigger amount of saves for the gk and more cs too you would think.

Hmm that puts a somewhat negative spin on things alright greeny 😀

Still I think that the way big sam sets his teams up they will defend deep and force teams to shoot from outside the box (going on past history) so I do think panti will be in a lot of teams again before the end of the season.

If you want to look at big Sams last two gw's and check out the percentage of big chances compared to total chances I think this is where the fantasy gold lies for saves for gks.

Leicester have some nice fixtures coming up soon so may get some cs going too. The problem with this is that the bonus points seem to come in the harder fixtures. Myhil has some real toughies coming up but I am happy to keep him as I reckon they will get at least one cs and possibly two. If he gets two cs he could have 32pts over the 6 tough gws which is huge, if it is only one cs then it might be closer to 22-25ptspts but that is still not too bad for your gk as it is circa 4ppg.

Yes if he concedes a shed load you are down but my point is that one cs turns the whole thing around. We didn't have this get out of jail before which meant rotating gks made much more sense.

I just got screwed over by Schmeichel 😆 .. started with schmeichel + Hennessey.. Hennessey dint start and schmeichel could not do CS's or save points. in frustration i sold Hennessey for Begovic before he fell and Hennessey became first choice 😆 .. then WCed when Chelsea kept up their bad form and got Fabianski cause of the fixtures.. now i'm just gonna get DDG and stick until injured. Never ever have i made more transfers in defense than i have this season 🙁

Same goalie choice for the start... Luckily I bought Myhill in my WC after GW3 and sticked with him (Butland was suppose to be my rotation backup, but I have used him once or so)... Worked well and I'm really tempted to just leave him for the rest of the season...

It's difficult to tease apart the effects of the new bonus system from the effects of a very anomalous first few months to the season, where home wins were scarce and clean sheets were much more unpredictable than usual.

The second part isn't a systematic change we can rely on for FPL planning, just a throw of the dice.

Good point Ros, there has been some very strange results in the first part of the season. I still think the bonus points are more likely to come in a tough away cs than in an easy home cs and if you are rotating you are likely to miss these points. I mean I can't hardly ever remember gk's getting double figues but it happens fairly regularly this season in games where you would not have selected a gk if you had an alternative.

That's true, there's definitely an impact. Very hard to tell how much it will affect the landscape to aim for a rare CS with 2/3 bonus points over a predictable home clean sheet without bonus. More analysis needed - there's your homework 🙂

Agree with this - has been a weird season. In the long run, surely there will be more home clean sheets than away?

I still believe in the rotating pair. Along with avoiding injury problems you're giving yourself the best chance of a cs each week.

Agree that a cs in a tougher game will yield more points with saves / bonus etc, but I don't think over the course of a season it'll win out vs easy clean sheet 6 pointers.

I've had Butland / Schem - played Butland mostly. Worked okay. Need to have two GKs who can keep a cs though, which Schem doesn't seem capable of!

I agree to a certain extent but I think you are missing my point slightly.

If we have two gk's and rotate them then you are going to miss the big points hauls where the gk makes 9 saves and gets three bonus points for a cs away to Liverpool say. This mega haul of 12pts offsets a lot of the potential for extra points gained through getting more cs by rotating a cheaper pair of gk's I think?

Chelsea and city away is very unlikely to get the mega hual though as most likely will concede. And usually it takes a penalty to get the haul. Of course there would be save points

The real problem is to determine which gk has the better fixture. And some which look good on paper sometimes dont happen as expected

I can almost guarantee that at wba will get at least one if not two unpredictable cs in the season and it could very well be at Chelsea or City and herein lies the issue. Where previously these cs might have been worth 9pts or so the extra 3 bonus pts adds 0.5ppg over 6 gws of tough fixtures. Without these 3 extra pts then it was much less of a risk to rotate two cheap gks knowing over a season you were almost certain to be ahead come the end even if you did miss out on the unlikely cs's.

I'm not advocating having a non playing backup gk but I do think a 4.0m playing gk fir any team should be enough to cover unforseen absences and allow you a chance to change horses if you are unfortunate enough to suffer a gk injury.

I've got King Boaz "more points than anyone in FPL since GW33 last season" Myhill

Plan to keep until such time as Ben Foster takes his place, at which point I shall swap him for Ben Foster

I have rotated butland and myhill and am still yet to get more than 3 points from butland. I've made the wrong decision 6 out of 10 game weeks.

Yes. It's dead for me. Next season one keeper approach for sure for me. Once Foster is back I won't be taking myhill out until I play my wildcard.

I've been burned by rotating goalkeepers in the past and so don't tend to rotate keepers anymore. I feel I do better having the additional funds to invest elsewhere or on a better first choice keeper.

Previously I have gone with keepers like the Pantillimon of old, so I could rely on to get plenty of saves even when not getting a clean sheet. This strategy also tends to work well with Pulis and Big Sam keepers as well because their teams often defend deep and concede lots of shots outside the box. I started this season with Myhill for this reason but then made the mistake of ousting him for Gomes on my wildcard because I thought Foster was coming back.

Until I have a clear indication (several games of data) that Pantillimon under Big Sam is fixed I'll likely just stick with Gomes every week.

I'm keeping Myhill. If he manages to keep 2 CS's in tough games i expect that to be the equivalent of 3CS's from DDG/Cech points wise.

Rot isn't' dead - it just needs the right players.

Ideally two Gks with perfect rot over the course of a season where their home form is largely far improved from their away form.

However, there have been a few significant shifts in the game that have lessened the need for rot. The biggest shift has been in Gks pricing. With no Gks priced at 4.0 and little on offer at 4.5, most of us have been looking at more expensive Gks from better teams. DDG, Cech and Courtois offer outstanding value at 5.5 and can be played each week. When matched with a 4.0 - playing or non-playing - the cost of your Gks matches the rot of two 4.5s.

Coupled with a more friendly bonus pt system, playing the same Gks each week has lessened the need for rot.

You do have some good points re the more exp gks but they are all based on the accepted logic that gks score 4pts for a cs.

Where I am coming from is the likes of a 12pt game for a lesser gk v a top team. If they get two of these a season then that 24pts is almost worth 4 cs for a ddg level gk as they don't seem to get as much bonus or save points.

I'm not saying your points or the current accepted logic is wrong but I'm questioning very seriously.

The cheap rotations this season have been completely hopeless. Its interesting that no uber's have really appeared and those that have are the sort you'd play every week. I think we can safely say home/away rotation is dead but I still think there is merit to fixture rotation on a small scale. For instance I have Myhill and Gomes but will probably play Myhill most of the time.

Why spend 0.5 on a backup to Myhill?

        - Having options can be useful if you are good at picking the best one on a semi regular basis
        - In case WBA have a blank fixture or Myhill picks up a knock, gets rotated or dropped you have a backup

Howdy Ryan. From what you day above you are doing just that with gomes as a back up to Myhil?
Is this really a good use of resources or are you better off getting henessy/toon gk as your backup for unforseen circumstances?

I still think you are missing the point slightly as if you play gomes in an unfavourable fixture for Myhil you are massively increasing your chances of missing out on an 11+ pt haul. What you are doing is what the accepted wisdom has been for years but with the new bonus system this is what I am now questioning.

As I say above I could be wrong but I think there is definitely something in this.

Also its important to note that the current 4m backups are both at risk of losing their starting spots.

If you pick the right gk based on the easier fixture then this might offset the difference between the extra points gained by the unexpected cs from the gk in the "harder" fixture.
This is the crux of the issue I guess as the extra 2 or 3 bonus pts for the "unexpected" cs is a lot of points when you add it to the save points that usually accompany them. One cs in a more difficult fixture could = two cs in easier fixtures for example.

Re the 4.0 if they are just there for cover then their actual pts contribution is going to be very limited over a season in any case and the extra 19m you get to put on the pitch for the season should* get you more points than your cover gk

*if the money is spent wisely of course

Tricky. Swans have good fixtures coming up but I would want KDB in there. I would struggle to hold on that one.

This problem has been solely caused by Aguero's dodgy legs 🙁

    Hi lads,
Any help with this bunch of rubbish would be much appreciated please:

    Ruddy/Rudd
    Prodl/Richards/Kolarov/Smalling/Huth
    Sanchez/Ayew/Mahrez/Hazard/Westwood/
    Costa/Martial/Vardy
    1FT.

Where do I begin? Problem areas:
Ruddy- Awful defence ahead of him, and their next fixtures hardly scream clean sheets
    Prodl and Westwood- Seemingly dropped
Hazard and Costa- Nothing more needs to be said.

Where do I go from here please lads? Obviously the likes of Richards and Huth are hardly great, but the above seem to me to be the biggest problems, along with no City attacking coverage.
Is my best bet Hazard and Costa to De Bruyne and Kane for -4? Or do I go further and remove the likes of Prodl and/or Ruddy as well/instead of? Would love to squeeze Mane in for their fixture V Bournemouth, but I think I have bigger fish to fry...

Any help would be greatly received.
    Thanks.

Anyone have any thoughts on the base BPS potential of Fonte over VVD?

I know Fonte has always done well BPS wise, but not sure how he measures up to VVD.

VVD is much better because of his huge goal threat.

I haven't really seen them play recently, but stats wise the goal threat isn't that different.

I guess the choice of Smalling over Jones is due to consistency. However, imo Jones will hold a regular place in the central defence of MUFC, ahead of Smalling, as long as he is injured. Or am I way off target here?

Jones at 5.2 over Smalling at 6.4, any day of the week. Y/N?

Jones will only play ahead of Smalling if Smalling is injured. He'll either start with him or not at all

Jones is a risk, but it could be a risk worth taking, but for his price I think I;d prefer Rojo

      1. Stat Sloth
        • 8 Years

Okay, so perhaps he needs to show some form before he is ahead of Smalling. But he should be a regular.

According to the Lineup Lessons this week Blind is closer to getting the LB berth from Rojo than taking Jones' place.

Perhaps both options are risky, and I should bigspend on Smalling instead, hermano?

According to the Lineup Lessons this week, Blind is no longer a threat for the central defence, and will at best compete with Rojo for LB.

I admit it, if Jones is not rid of his illness he is not a regular. However, if the opposite was true, wouldn't he be one of the first names on LVG's list?

But if Kane has signalled his return with his goals at the weekend then he will score horrible fixtures or not.

Lukaku has never done well for me, historically!

Not a no-brainer, but a good move imo

I think ditching Martial is looking like a no brainer (I'm doing it as well), the question of replacements is much trickier. Think I'm going with Kane, but Lukaku/Bony/Pelle (depending on which strikers you have already) all make a strong case.

Agree with this, Man U not creating enough and Martial seems to be preferred out wide for now - Kane / Lukaku / Bony / Pelle all good options.
