We return with our Wednesday Weekly Shop regular this afternoon, assessing the player lists of our partner games to pinpoint the likely targets that will make up our weekend lineups.

Our analysis of the options is split into two sections: I’ll breakdown the key targets that no squad can do without in “Better Buys”, before seeking out those one-shot “Poundstretcher” prospects that can provide us points, whilst freeing up funds.

For this week’s selection, we’re scanning the players lists in our two partner games – FantasyBet and Premier Punt.

Better Buys

It’s fair to say that Tottenham have improved defensively this season – Mauricio Pochettino’s side have conceded just ten times, the fourth best backline in the league. With three clean sheets in their last five at White Hart Lane, Hugo Lloris (FantasyBet 5m, Premier Punt 7.7m) is a promising keeper pick this week, given that visitors West Ham are devoid of injured playmaker Dimitri Payet.

While there has been some doubts over Virgil van Dijk’s (FantasyBet 5.5m, Premier Punt 8.6m) fitness, the Dutch defender is confident that he will be ready to start against Stoke. Ryan Bertrand (FantasyBet 5.5m, Premier Punt 7.8m) is also an option as Southampton go in search of a third consecutive clean sheet – the full-back has an assist in each of the last two Gameweeks.

Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil (FantasyBet 8.5m, Premier Punt 11.8m) has been the epitome of consistency over the last six Gameweeks, serving up eight assists and a goal in that run. The German has also been the most creative player in the league over the last four, with 23 chances created, and now travels to the Hawthorns, where West Brom have conceded three goals in four of their six home games.

Crystal Palace have had an encouraging start to the season despite the fact that not one of their strikers has managed to find the net. Instead, the Eagles’ midfield provides us with a host of options to choose from against struggling Sunderland. Yohan Cabaye (FantasyBet 6.5m, Premier Punt 7.9m) is the safer pick with penalties and set pieces helping the Frenchman to notch four goals and an assist so far this term and, whilst Yannick Bolasie (FantasyBet 6.5m, Premier Punt 7.7m) may be more of a maverick selection, he has some explosive potential and looks to be in good form, having scored in both matches for DR Congo over the break.

Romelu Lukaku (FantasyBet 8m, Premier Punt 11.7m) followed up an excellent performance against Sunderland with an equaliser at West Ham, bringing the Belgian’s tally to seven goals for the campaign. Everton host an Aston Villa side that are likely to be tougher to break down under Remi Garde but we’re backing the Toffees striker to continue his run of form, particularly with Gerard Deulofeu (FantasyBet 6.5m, Premier Punt 9.4m) and Arouna Kone (FantasyBet 5m, Premier Punt 7.9m) in support. Both could prove double-up options along with Lukaku after their recent performances, with the former notching five times over the international break for Spain U21s.

Poundstretchers

We return to Crystal Palace for the stand-out budget keeper choice of the round. Wayne Hennessey (FantasyBet 4m, Premier Punt 5.6m) kept out Manchester United in his last appearance at Selhurst Park and has three clean sheets in six ahead of a clash with a Sunderland outfit that has failed to score in three of their last four away trips.

Swansea host a Bournemouth side that have not found the net in their last two matches, offering Gary Monk’s side a good chance to find a first shut out since Gameweek 6. In view of Bournemouth’s recent defensive record, we’ve gone for Kyle Naughton (FantasyBet 5m, Premier Punt 7.8m) as our pick of the hosts’ defence – the full-back looks a decent shout for points at both ends of the pitch, with two assists accrued already this term.

We turn our attention to Tottenham’s attack for some budget selections, either as alternatives or to slot in alongside Harry Kane (FantasyBet 9.5m, Premier Punt 13.5m) against a West Ham side that have not kept out their opponents in seven matches. Dele Alli (FantasyBet 5m, Premier Punt 7.7m) was our pick back in Gameweek 11 and has bagged two goals since then, including the well-taken goal against France. Mousa Dembele (FantasyBet 5.5m, Premier Punt 8.1m) also catches the eye with two goals in three matches and could be one to consider if he shrugs off a knock in time. Hueng Min-Son (FantasyBet 8m, Premier Punt 7.7m) scored twice over the international break and with Erik Lamela and Nacer Chadli sidelined, the fit-again Korean – who is even classed as a midfielder in Premier Punt – looks on course for a first XI return.

There hasn’t been a more reliable budget striker this season than Leicester’s 12-goal Jamie Vardy. The Foxes frontman remains at his original price of 6.0m in FantasyBet and is only 7.4m in PremierPunt but we’re steering clear due to some doubts over his fitness. Instead, we turn to Leicester’s weekend hosts Newcastle, who also have a frontman in form – Ayoze Perez (FantasyBet 5.5m, Premier Punt 7.7m) has three goals and a pair of assists in their last six and could prove an excellent enabler.

These are the contenders for my weekly contest lineups heading into the weekend. I’ll return on Friday with a further assessment of this week’s partner games – FantasyBet and Premier Punt, as I continue my quest for profit in the 2015/16 campaign.

Has anyone seen any decent 'hidden gem' films that have been released recently?

John Wick was one I hadn't heard of but enjoyed

Crazy cool fighting scenes in Johk Wick. Sure, here are a few hidden gems that just came out:

The Hallow (Irish horror movie, excellent)
Black Sea (Jude Law submarine hidden treasure movie came out about six months ago)
Grandma (Lilly Tomlin, who will likely get nominated for an Oscar for leading actress)

I could go on & on. Movies and TV trump fantasy sports in my life.

          Okay, here are some more:

It Follows (horror, not gory, but excellent)
What we do in the Shadows (horror spoof with Jemaine Clement from Flight of the Concordes)
          The Gift (Jason Bateman)
'71 (Troubles in Northern Ireland, very suspenseful)
Bone Tomahawk (Kurt Russell, creep western)
          Dope (comedy)
Dear White People (dramedy, multicultral satire)

          Need more?

The Hallow is very recent, at least in the USA, just last week

I guess that is good. You have a lot of options. Get to work, man! This is the tip of the proverbial iceberg, too. There are so many good indie flicks to see, its is hard to keep up. My wife and I are movie nuts (and good TV, too), so we catch a lot. Living in NYC, we can pretty much seen anything that is new, different, foreign films, etc. A nice plus.

that's great that your wife enjoys movies as much as you. Makes a movie so much more enjoyable when you can share the experience with someone else that's on a similar wavelength

Thanks, yeah. It is great fun to see a thoughtful movie, play, etc., and then discuss afterwards over dinner and drinks.

We like pretty much anything as long as it's (very) good, so we read up on the flicks in a few places before going to make sure we are seeing something of quality. You're doing that right now in a sense.

The Room (Brie Larson). Very rough film. My wife saw it and then Brie came out and spoke to the audience (part of our film class). I have not seen this one, but highly acclaimed

"Stanford Prison Experiment" and "Experimenter." These are two movies that came out recently that cover real psychological research studies that were mired in ethics debates. Two very good flicks. I am also a psychologist, so this is close to home.

The Short Game - unbelievably good documentary on 7/8 year old golfers

Harmontown - essential if you've watched Community or if you're nerdy.

John Wick was fantastic. So is the Raid and The Raid 2.

City of God is one of my favourite ever, Brazillian film.

Totally agree, every single "psychological" type film now just looks rubbish in comparison. I remember when Inception was out, people were saying it was this baffling, intelligent masterpiece, and I just thought it was absolute garbage.

Same thing happened with TV after The Wire - everything just looked rubbish in comparison.

I actually wrote a blog about Mulholland Dr a while ago:

Wow, that is a high bar to exceed then! I think you can find similar movies. Just search on directors like Lynch, etc.

Memento (moire) is a fantastic psych thriller, along with Donnie Darko. Then again, you may have seen and not liked so much. IDK, there are tons of films out there!

Seen (and love) both, actually mention Memento, Chinatown, Persona and others in my blog above, it's just that none match Mulholland Dr imo.

As I wrote: "It is a film that inspired my love for film, the work that made me see just what is possible through the medium, yet that damaged all future cinematic experiences. Every build-up to watching a film is tinged with that desperate hope that maybe, just maybe, it could be the one to surpass Mulholland Drive. As of yet, the search has been fruitless. No other film has that punch, no scene comparing to Club Silencio, or Winkies, or the Cowboy scene. No film leaves you so breathless, so gobsmacked."

I agree, the majority of cinema goers are too easily swayed when anything tries to be 'difficult to understand', I really liked Inception (and most of Nolan's films) but calling it tricky to follow or work out is a joke.

I look forward to reading the blog when i get home from work 😀

Interesting. Well, I tend to judge movies against themselves, as opposed to another film or the feeling I got from another prized film. However, we all have our standards, methods, and preferences.

Inception is easy to follow, just requires concentration.

Of course, and I adore hundreds of other films, Donnie Darko and Memento being 2. It's just I've never adored one as much as Mulholland Dr!

But it's difficult to stay focused when the film isn't really that good.

*It's actually pretty easy to follow even when doing something else in the meantime.

Ahaha I think I can guess the scene 😉

It gets better with every viewing, you realise that every single piece is there for a reason, it all makes sense, it's not just "being weird" for the sake of it. Incredible work, still can't get my head around how he made it, particularly as it was initially a TV pilot!

I actually wrote my final University essay on Mulholland Drive/Sunset Boulevard aha.

Just dug it out in my emails, it was in a Noir module on my English Lit course. The question was:

‘There is nothing escapist about the black novel whatever. The writer cannot even escape himself in it; the black novel is the novel in which escape is shut off’. (Derek Raymond)

Discuss ideas of entrapment and escape in any two or more texts from the module.

I really enjoyed the Babadook on my first viewing. The second time not so much, the 'final fight' scene became more ridiculous lol.

Its a good thing that films like It Follows and Babadook are getting huge attention and praise though, a breath of fresh air into an otherwise stale hollywood-dominated genre nowadays

Ah I've only seen it once, the ending was slightly ridiculous but the rest was so good that I'll allow it 😉

Indeed, I think that's why they seem SO good - because the horror genre has been dreadful for years.

Disagree. You just have to stay away from mainstream stuff. We have listed several excellent ones that have come out just this year!

The Hallow, Babadook, It Follows, Bone Tomahawk.

I have not seen Crimson Peak, but will soon, and that is Guillermo del Toro, and it is supposed to be pretty good, and his effects and imagination are usually whack.

Mark, Granville and Jonty chat on one of the Scoutcasts, moaning about their captaincy decisions. Mark says that, over the last 3 gameweeks, the product of his captain scores (undoubled) equals 36 and the sum of his captain scores over that period coincides with the score of Granville's bench.

Granville replies that this information is not enough to figure out Mark's captain scores and he can't be bothered to check Mark's team. Mark agrees and adds that, points-wise, the last one was his best captaincy decision of the season. Then Granville figures out what the captain scores were and resumes the chat.

Jonty stays puzzled though. Help Jonty figure out Mark's captain scores and continue the Scoutcast.

how nuts would it be to have no City cover for 2-3 GWs?

I have Bony who is a transfer waiting to happen anyway and Yaya who is planned to be my Kun makeweight

so, seriously thinking of Yaya and Bony to Deulofeu and Kane for -4 as if Del rises I can no longer afford him and Kun. Or I could forgoe Kane and just get Kun straight away
