Captain Sensible – Gameweek 13

Our sixth members’ article of the international break sees us turn our attentions to the main captaincy contenders for the weekend ahead. We take a three-part approach that includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

With a 34% share of the vote, Romelu Lukaku is the stand-out captaincy pick ahead of Everton’s home tie against Aston Villa. Profiting from their agreeable schedule, the 8.6-priced Belgian notched two goals and as many assists in the last two Gameweeks, elevating him to joint-second (seven goals) in the league-wide scoring charts. The fact that Villa shipped 13 goals in their previous five road clashes provides further incentive to hand Lukaku the armband.

Jamie Vardy (14%) can equal a Premier League record when Leicester City make the trip to Newcastle, as he attempts to net for the tenth successive start. Whilst there’s no disputing Vardy’s points potential, there are still major doubts over his availability, with Claudio Ranieri remaining uncertain over his star striker’s fitness in yesterday’s press conference. Staying within the Leicester camp, Riyad Mahrez claims a surprisingly low 3% backing for the St James’ Park clash.

Dispelling his slow start to the campaign, Harry Kane (9%) boasts five goals in his last three starts. Spurs’ premier frontman has developed a knack for scoring in derbies, so he’ll fancy his chances at home to a West Ham United rearguard that’s failed to register a shut-out in their previous seven match-ups.

Alexis Sanchez lies just outside the top three with a 6% backing. The Fantasy Premier League’s most expensive (11.6) midfielder has drawn three consecutive blanks but will be encouraged by the fact that West Bromwich Albion rank top for goals conceded at home (12). Mesut Ozil (4%) scoops a more modest share of the vote, despite chalking up eight assists in his previous six starts.

Despite doubts over his minutes, Sergio Aguero has been backed by 4% of voters for City’s clash with Liverpool tomorrow evening. With just one assist to his name in three outings, Kevin De Bruyne (2%) narrowly sneaks into the top 10.

Eden Hazard and Odion Ighalo (2%) matched each other stride for stride in our Captain Poll. The former has no form to speak of (one goal and two assists across 11 starts) but could punish a Norwich City defence that’s failed to keep a clean sheet on their travels. Meanwhile, the latter has been directly involved (five goals and two assists) in all of Watford’s last seven goals, underlining his value as a budget forward.

    Oh my God. Silva out.

I've had him for the last 6 weeks, and he's been 'a week away' every single week. Arghhh!.

I'm on a -4 at the moment. Silva out for another hit or play Evans/Moreno?

Hi all best of luck to you all this weekend

Current Front 8 of my Wildcard team

    KDB Ozil Sanchez Mahrez Deulofeu
    Kane Lukaku Vardy

Plan for next week or GW15 is to get Kun & Lanzini in for Vardy and either KDB or Sanchez

I see no reason to change the plan given the greater risks of doing it now (potential re injury, midweek match, Vardy high ownership etc) versus waiting.

    Any thoughts? Many thanks

You don't need a 5man mid as strong as that... re going to have some serious dilemas going forward on who to drop.. also WC at this point means you HAVE TO HAVE KUN!!! my advice would be not double up on ozil and sanchez, not double up on leicter ( they have a tough run coming up now) don't have 5 man strong midfield... bring in KUN. also- my gut tells me Chelsea will explode now....

Luckily that was the last part of my feedback!

For me I would take: Ozil over Sanchez based on form
Hazard for Sanchez as Chelsea have a seriously good run of games
Kun HAS to play.. even if it means no KDB

Bench one defender and one midfielder/forward?
I'm thinking benching Huth (1 CS all season) and Mane (Risk of mins)

    Opinion on captain?
My head says Lukaku but my gut says Kane with Lukaku ownership growing rapidly and not sure what Villa side will show up against Everton.

    Myhill
    Azpi | Moreno | Janmaat | Huth | (Targett)
    Mahrez | Ozil | Eriksen | Mane | KDB
    Lukaku | Pelle | Kane

    Appreciate any tips.

Hi guys- struggling big time this week and really not sure if my logic is correct or the most effective way to do things. (basically in order to get in Aguero next week).

    My team:
    Butand Randolph
    Darmian Sagna Moreno Huth Richards
    KDB Sanchez Mahrez Mane Payet
    Vardy Pelle Lukaku

(0 in the bank and 1FT)

So what I m thinking is Payet-Lingard (4.5m) and Randolph to Hennessy (4m)

That way next week I can do Pelle to Aguero and Mane or Mahrez to someone 900k cheaper.

Problem is I m taking a -4hit this week only for lingard to sit on my bench (unless Vardy doesn't play) and is Hennesy really worth taking a hit for?

    Please advise... Stuck!

  14. Doolittle says goodbye
    Doolittle
    • 11 Years
    8 years, 5 months ago

Here we are then, the final frontier. Now the end is near, and so I face the final curtain. I will still be Doolittle on Monday, I will still bleed the same blood and breathe the same air, but we would be deceiving only ourselves to pretend that it will be the same. It is hard to recall a life without Fantasy Football Scout, a weekday that wasn’t punctuated by conversations about Sergio Aguero, debates about Eden Hazard, attempts to answer quiz questions, frantic quests to discover a new post, rants about “essential” and “coverage”. Was the sky still blue? Did the light still shimmer against the Earth. Did the heat of the sun still reach my frosty heart? Was it the sun at all? That huge ball of magnetised gas suddenly doesn’t seem so radiant. Was it, in fact, the warmth of an online community?

It is perhaps no coincidence that this weekend is set to be one of the coldest on record. Certainly, scientists will deem it the product of Arctic air sweeping in from the North Pole, but we perhaps knows the real reason, the reason that London will feel that extra bit frostier, that extra bit more hostile, that extra bit sadder this weekend. At 9am tomorrow morning, one of my company directors will arrive at the office to open the doors, to open them for a storm more violent than any other to rampage through my heart. Two men, forming a double act more reprehensible than Hitler and Stalin, than Mao and Mussolini, than Tyldesley and Townsend, will enter to savage everything that I hold dear, to fix the cables and rearrange the desks with brutal nonchalance. They will be unaware that their actions spell the end of my life as I know it. In a way they are absolved of blame, knowing not what they do, but such destruction cannot be ignored.

In his 1861 work ‘Great Expectations’, Charles Dickens wrote: “Pause you who read this, and think for a moment of the long chain of iron or gold, of thorns or flowers, that would never have bound you, but for the formation of the first link on one memorable day”. It is through this lens that I am escorted back to the summer of 2012, the immediate days following the conclusion of my degree. Three years of partying, of hedonism, of reading and writing and drinking and laughing and things too numerous (and post-watershed) to mention, were suddenly, in the blink of an eye one May afternoon, over. One day you are a carefree student, able to party for days on end, to sleep until 2pm, to play Football Manager until 5am, to eat cold beans straight out of a tin, to put Lidl’s own brand vodka on your 2 month old Cornflakes, and the next you are a person. You are a person, and now you have to move back home, you have to find a job, you have to start to pay back loans, you have to survive. I always hoped that, once my English degree ended, I would have a Road to Damascus realisation of what it was that I wanted to do, of what it was that I was good at, and I did. The answer, much to my surprise, and much to the detriment of my career prospects, that thing was Fantasy Football.

I was suddenly spending all of my time online, desperately seeking menial office jobs that would require someone who could recite William Blake’s poetry or posit theories about Existentialism referring to the criticism of Walter Kaufmann, and this slog needed to be broken up. I found just the thing. I had dabbled in FPL before, and had actually won my mini-league the previous year, but I knew my rivals were improving and I needed to up my game. It had always been casual before, it was just a game, but now I needed help. Fumbling around blindly, searching for answers, I stumbled across a link to a site. Fantasy. Football. Scout. What was this beast? I clicked. Evs, Wild Rover, Bedknobs & Boomsticks, Beric, Doosra, Forca – what were these names? And the garbled lexicon: “coverage”, “bench fodder”, “essential”, “differential”, “enabler”. It was alien. I lurked briefly, tried to find my bearings, tried to work out just what the hell this strange place was. I knew a bit about FPL, but what was this? Complex strategies to buy Clint Dempsey, detailed statistics comparing Alan Hutton to Emmerson Boyce, what was this mysterious world?

I summoned some courage, collected my thoughts, and formed a post. The topic escapes me now, but after hitting post I instantly noticed a clique forming. The old timers were huddling together, they were wary of these new strangers, the “gravless masses” as they were named. It dawned on me that I, the first timer poster, was one of these unwanted newcomers. I had even mentioned my FFS virginity in my post. I felt a fool. I bowed my head, wiped my brow, and prepared to close the site.

But wait…a reply. It couldn’t be, could it? Who was it? Doosra. “Welcome to the site”…and what was that? A smiley face. A smile that could not compete with the broad one that beamed across my face. Another reply followed, then another, all welcoming to this place. The reticence ebbed away, the blinders were removed from my eyes, and my screen glowed. I followed the advice to get a grav, and settled in. I was now part of this community. The rest, as they say, is history.

I have never looked back, and it is with a heavy heart that I have to say goodbye to the luxury of visiting FFS whenever I please through the day. I will still return whenever the opportunity arises, and I hope that the frequent meetings of my seniors will be a saving grace, but it will not be the same. When my day gets tough, I am able to seek sanctuary in FFS, to be instantly welcomed just like I was 3 and a half years ago, to chat about everything from Arsenal captaincy options to great British sitcoms.

That will be snatched away from me now, but I will live on. For, you see, that first link about which Dickens wrote cannot be withdrawn. That memorable day has happened, it has been cemented, and what follows are pure adornments. That root, that cast iron first step into the world of FFS, can never be taken away. We are bound within the FFS community already, regardless of future you will always be a part of this group. They can take our corner desks, but they cannot take our freedom.

My family is from Richmond...many a nice weekend spent there as a kid visiting my grandparents. Old Deer Park, the pagoda at Kew Gardens...glory days.

Assuming that's Richmond in Surrey not Yorkshire btw.

My family lived on Eveyln Road off Kew Road. They had been renting it since the 1890s until my gran went into an Alms house, (Hickeys on Sheen Rd) 100 years later.

      Splendid. Heartfelt, entertaining...poignant.

Now you need to get this sorted as soon as possible. I suggest leaving one or two strategically placed feng shui magazines around the office for starters. Maybe you could spill some paint in an open area of the floor, requiring it to be covered - perhaps by a desk?

Thank you, I did write 2 novels (one is available for Kindle on Amazon above), but being turned down by agents/publishers can knock one's confidence somewhat. I know I need to dust myself off and try again, but it can be hard to put 6 months of your life into something only to have it knocked back time and time again.

Whilst FFS being a forum makes perfect sense, there's something special about the jumbled array of comments beneath an article. It creates a community. It shouldn't work, but it does brilliantly.

Sorry to hear your news - exactly the same is happening to me on Monday, I'm being shifted from the best spot in the office (corner with window) to the middle of a room where everyone can see my screen. Sorry to hear you won't be able to spend so much time on FFS but greatly enjoyed your posts and a conversation we had re Radiohead, Spinal Tap and Nick Drake. I'm sure you'll be back on site much more than you think but I've actually found a happy medium now where I spend a "reasonable" amount of time on FFS but only on lunchbreaks and in the evening/WEs - it's helped my rank more not to read too much and then second guess myself (e.g. getting YYT rather than KDB "thanks" to an FFS post).

Good luck and to paraphrase the words of that great sage Fu Manchu "The world will hear from you again!"

            sincere post.

imho i believe guys who play fpl are the ones who always seek
to take the right decisions. because i believe the ones who can take the right decisions
in their life would be more successful and more importantly more content. yes, we all
want to be successful and happy and therefore we are striving to make the best movements
that will take us up the ladder.

by right decisions i also don't know what is right or wrong but probably this pondering
on what's right or wrong makes men better because it leads to question ourselves, forces
us to find our mistakes and at last improve. right decisions might be generally stats based
but i don't think being logical all the time would lead us to the results. there's always the gut
feeling involved and maybe fpl teaches us how and when to trust our instincts. all in all if all
the managers are aiming to better i believe it's because they want to be a better man. or maybe all this i wrote is just plain bullshit 😀

          Bench: Butland, Dawson, Nyom, Payet
          2FT, £2mn ITB

I'm going to bite the bullet and swap Ighalo, Sanchez and Payet for Aguero, Ozil and a cheap mid £4.9 or less. Any ideas for the last spot?

Oh. Sorry, sir. Nothing. Nothing to see here. Just me going over a -8 Kane out for Kun scenario.

Hi folks - how do the following changes look to bring in Agüero over the next 2 weeks? 🙂

          http://i.imgur.com/d5B0oOe.png (*not for a -12 hit)

          It would be:

          1. Pelle & Kane to Ighalo & Aguero for free next week

          2. Then Myhill & Albrighton to Hennessey & Deulofeu or Bolasie the week or so after.

After hearing Kun is fit to play and Bony injured I think there's a good chance Kun starts...
So I'm debating swapping Ayew out for him now. Yes Ayew has got a 'good fixture' but Swansea are looking terrible all over the park

          What do we think?

WC active, should I keep Kolarov?

If not, who is a better option? (0.0 itb, have Bellerin - Moreno - Evans - Simpson atm)

Ighalo has a great run of fixtures after this week so it's a decent pick.
            Probably blank this week though
