Scout Scribbles – Dire Night for Manchester Duo

Man City stumble to a 1-0 Champions League loss at Juventus, as neighbours United fail to find a way past PSV at Old Trafford. Elsewhere, Mauricio Pochettino considers resting Harry Kane for Spurs’ Europa League clash tonight and Daniel Sturridge edges closer to a Liverpool return.

City Lose in Turin

Manchester City fell to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Juventus last night. Sergio Aguero played 69 minutes before being replaced by Raheem Sterling, while Gael Clichy lasted the distance on his return from injury as Aleksandar Kolarov dropped to the bench. Joe Hart was withdrawn at the 81-minute mark, with Manuel Pellegrini later explaining that the shot-stopper was suffering with hamstring and back injuries. The Sky Blues boss refused to rule out David Silva for their home tie against Southampton, but insisted that Vincent Kompany will be sidelined for at least another couple of weeks:

“As for Joe Hart – it is impossible to know how serious his injury is at this point. He has a problem with his hamstring and has had a problem in his back for the past week. We hope we don’t lose him, but for if for some reason he cannot play I have trust in Willy Caballero. David Silva is working with the physio in Manchester and we will know more tomorrow, but Vincent Kompany has no chance to play this week. He is not running yet and will need at least two weeks more.”

The Scout Says: Ally Hart’s doubt for the weekend with Kompany’s continued absence and Man City’s defence is looking vulnerable. Those Fantasy managers holding the likes of Aleksandar Kolarov and Bacary Sagna will be irked by the fact that Pellegrini’s charges have shipped 12 goals in the five matches that Kompany missed, failing to register a single clean sheet. Nonetheless, match-ups against Stoke City (away) and Swansea (home) in the next three Gameweeks harbour decent shut-out potential. Although Pellegrini previously stated that Aguero is unable to play three games in a week, the Argentine has played just over an hour in both of the last two and will surely lead the line at home to Southampton once again. Given that City have scored just one goal in their last three in all competitions, Silva’s possible return would be a real shot in the arm as they attempt to rediscover their spark in the final third.

United Attack Falters Again

Manchester United’s home encounter against PSV Eindhoven ended as a 0-0 stalemate, putting their Champions League campaign firmly in the balance. Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial returned to the starting line-up from illness and injury respectively, with the former operating as a number ten and the latter spearheading the attack. Having been utilised as a forward last weekend, Memphis Depay was shifted to the left flank, whilst Van Gaal’s decision to bench Juan Mata meant Jesse Lingard was afforded his third successive 90-minute run-out for the Red Devils.

The Scout Says: Another clean sheet for the Red Devils reaffirms the merits of investing in their back line. Chris Smalling (6.7) is the safest option by virtue of his security of starts, though Marcos Rojo (5.5) has started four of the last five but remains a slight rotation risk, particularly over the festive period when the schedule picks up pace. Notwithstanding the former’s prohibitive price tag, Man United’s favourable fixtures (lei, WHU, bou, NOR, sto) certainly justifies investment. Up front, Martial flattered to deceive as the lone frontman and has now scored one goal in his last 11 appearances for United; having chalked up just 11 shots throughout the entire league campaign, the former Monaco starlet will need to accelerate his influence in the final third to re-ignite our interest. Lingard, meanwhile, produced four attempts last night – double the number of any team-mate – and at just 4.5, he is clearly worth monitoring if he can retain his starting berth at the weekend again.

Pochettino Considers Resting Kane Tonight

Mauricio Pochettino revealed that Harry Kane could be rested for Tottenham Hotspur’s Europa League tie against Qarabag FK. During his pre-Europa League press conference, the Argentine complained about the fixture scheduling which sees his side play in Azerbaijan tonight before playing host to Chelsea at midday on Sunday:

“Why couldn’t we play on Monday against Chelsea? The reality is you play Thursday, have a long trip home and play Sunday morning, in this case Chelsea who played yesterday [Tuesday] and have three days (to prepare). We have one day – it’s an advantage for opponent. We need to accept the rules for the game but it’s the reality for us. We will see tomorrow if Kane plays. This is a problem we have had in the last few weeks, the international players play a lot: Kane, Alli, Walker, Dier. The competition is very tough and it’s not easy to manage that. But always we try to assess and analyse to make the correct decision.”

On the injury front, Pochettino broke the news that Erik Lamela and Nabil Bentaleb are contending with ankle injuries. Meanwhile, Danny Rose, Kyle Walker and Mousa Dembele will not feature for the Lilywhites, as they were not asked to travel with the squad to Azerbaijan:

“Nabil is still out, he got a bad tackle during international duty with Algeria and he is out now. Alex Pritchard, Nacer Chadli and Erik Lamela are also out and we have rested a few players for this game as well.”

The Scout Says: Given that Kane hasn’t missed a domestic or European match this term and turned out for England in the U21 Euros during the summer, his 27% ownership will be hoping that Pochettino affords the red-hot frontman a well-earned breather. Fresh off the back of a brace against West Ham United, Kane will be relishing the opportunity to match up against Chelsea at White Hart Lane, having put them to the sword with a brace and two assists in the corresponding fixture last term. With Dele Alli serving out his one-match suspension next Gameweek and Lamela a doubt for the Blues clash, Dembele could be shifted back into the attacking quartet, with Ryan Mason sitting alongside Eric Dier in the double pivot.

Sturridge Close to Reds Return

Jurgen Klopp said that Daniel Sturridge could play against Bordeaux on Thursday if he negotiates training without any problems. Conversely, Martin Skrtel is unlikely to be in the matchday squad because of illness:

“Daniel is coming closer and closer, he has trained seven or eight times in a row. I will help him, and in the end it will help us. He’s closer. Each session is very important, my decision you will see tomorrow, but it’s closer. The most important thing is he can train with no problems. If we have the feeling that it’s a good moment for [Sturridge to play] a few minutes or more, we will see in the game!”

The Scout Says: In the wake of their 4-1 road victory over Manchester City, Liverpool’s attacking assets are back on many a Fantasy manager’s radar. Philippe Coutinho (four goals and one assist in three) and Roberto Firmino (one goal and three assists in three) are courting serious attention in light of their burgeoning partnership, yet the striker situation on Merseyside, with both Sturridge and Christian Benteke jostling for attention, means we are yet to ascertain Klopp’s preferred starting XI. With Liverpool’s schedule from now through to the New Year (SWA, new, WBA, wat, LEI, sun) looking ripe for returns, Fantasy managers are hoping for some consistency of selection as we look for a way into Klopp’s flourishing attack.

Eder Pushing for more Minutes

Having started ahead of Bafetimbi Gomis for the Swans’ 2-2 draw at home to Bournemouth, Eder is determined to prove his worth and earn further pitch time in the league:

“I had to adjust to the rhythm because I haven’t been playing, but it was good and I’m looking for more minutes. I’m working hard for that. I always want to play, but it’s the gaffer’s decision. I’m going to keep working hard so I can play more games. That’s what I’m going to do. I need to play a few games, but I will try to show my best as soon as possible. I’m working hard and I feel confident.”

The Scout Says: Eder’s insertion into the starting XI was borne out of necessity, considering that Gomis had drawn blanks in eight successive starts. It’s safe to say that the Portuguese frontman failed to stamp his authority on the lone-striker berth, managing one shot and zero key passes against the Cherries. As such, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Garry Monk elected to reinstate Gomis for their trip to Liverpool this Sunday. With regards to attacking coverage for the Welsh outfit, Andre Ayew (three goals in six outings) remains the prime pick. The 7.1-priced Ghana international has tallied as many shots on target (five) as the rest of Swansea’s midfielders combined over the last six Gameweeks.

      Ha 😀

To be fair, Leicester go all out attack every week, and Vardy is central to all their attacks. Reminds me of Austin. He wouldn't cost £50m, but his huge volume of goals were the result of the team mentality and tactics. United seem to be playing for the 1-0s...

Every season the Europa League teams seem to struggle. It can't be a coincidence.

Spurs are on course for a top 4 spot, but fatigue will surely catch up with them in the second half of the season.

It effects every team in the competition. Everton's bad season had a lot to do with Europa last year. This year they look the better for it. I wouldn't be surprised if Bilic tossed the qualifiers away with this in mind

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Who is not playing for overall rank?

Over in the community articles section Wild Rover there's a good discussion going on about playing the UFPL, not for overall rank, but for weekly prizes. This involves taking multiple hits one month to take advantage of kind fixtures and remove injured players the next month. With £1,000 for the top monthly prize he makes a compelling case, especially as he has won it once.

During the discussion Wakey revealed that he does similar for FPL, not caring about overall rank, he instead focuses transfers and hits on head to head match ups.

I'm sure there are others that have set up their own monthly prizes as well in mini leagues who may do the same.

So if you are not playing for overall rank, what are you playing for? Would you recommend it and what tips are there in FPL to getting the most out of potential mini league monthly prizes and head to head match ups?

Also is anyone tempted to abandon dreams of a good overall rank and HoF placing and instead focus on these short term goals?

hot air? you're the one who laughed when I suggested him. All I did was flag up a player I felt wasn't getting any attention. I am not going to be wreckless just to bring him in. I felt Aguero was a bigger priority for me over Pelle. I originally planned to get him in this week, but had hoped Kun would stay quiet against Liverpool. Looking to trade KDB for him next week

should I take a hit to do KDB for Firmino? I don't think so. I can do it for free next week. Did you know, first week of each month the hits don't come off your monthly score.
Its an not ery well known rule so I try to make any hits happen in that week and don't cost me a shot of the monthly prizes in my mini league

I love seeing my rank go down in numbers, but that's not what I play for. Realistically I'll probably never have a chance at winning outright, so I play to beat people I know so we can have some banter about it. Mini Leagues are my number one priority.

Yep, it was Wakey's comment that spurred this on as it was a deliberate approach to season long Fantasy football games in general that I hadn't really considered.

I have never played for overall rank im in 3 cash MLs id rather win all of those and finish 700k than finish 1k and lose all my cash MLs.

Transfers later in the season are based on rivals. I blocked a rival a couple of years ago in GW38 instead of going with my gut and getting Nolan for his hatty. Won the ML so didnt care too much that my OR wasnt as good as it could have been.

Yeah, I'm trying to do that.

But I couldn't bring myself to keep Vardy who had over 50% ownership, and found myself punting on Costa and Hazard, trying to get in front of the curve.

The only way to guarantee a good rank is to play safe, and stick with the crowd. The Triggerlips method.

I must admit I found it that way last season. From GWK 8 to Gwk 38 I never moved out of the top 5,000 or within the top 500...just shuffled around thereabouts. That's not a brag about a high rank, its more that it was just really boring as I was focused on a strong rank, but once I got it, it felt like there was nothing more to strive for, except of course winning the whole thing, but realistically as much as people say that they play to get Number 1, it is unachievable.

I think my most fun season was where I was when I had a good head to head cup run and my main mini league was really close - final captaincy decision did it.

What has happened to Sharon - does anyone have a link to her team? I can't see it in the overall rankings.

Has she removed or auto-destructed it or changed her name?

Dead teams sometimes start off well, but that success is unlikely to last all season. Last year I think the highest placed dead team finished outside the top 100k.

Its a balance of everything but we have a cash league with the following allotment

        1) x amount of money for the first three in the overall league
        2) x amount of money for the first three in the H2H league
        3) x amount of money for highest scorer each GW

That was those that are behind in Overall scheme of things can set their teams up for certain gws. It is also why i prefer a -8, no hit, no hit to a -4, no hit, -4.

My general rule as i play in cash mini leagues, play for overall rank until I cant win the mini league (£20 per person to the overall winning). Than I play for the monthly prizes (£5 per person each month winner).
The new chips have a changed the dynamic though with some people opting to use them in attempt to win the monthly prize.

I play to win my main local cash mini leagues.

I enter a few other larger ones but winning these is largely dependent on having a very good season in terms of overall rank.

So I suppose really I do play for overall as the higher I finish the more chance I have of winning all my mini leagues.

Good when it's going well, a grind when it's not.

        To be clear....

This is really the one that I play most against....my brother...http://fantasy.premierleague.com/entry/171861/event-history/13/

As you can see he has already taken a -8 and knowing him as I do I am almost certain it will have been to have brought in Aguero (he now Ha zero itb)....

His Barkley pick last week was a success....so this week I took a (-8) and with part of that I brought in Barkley and Aguero...

50 pt lead no longer under threat....no matter how good Kane does.

And my (-8) is irrelevant....and I love the cat and mouse....

I agree that overall rank and mini-leagues go hand in hand for the most part but not completely.

This tends to come into play more towards the end of the season where you start looking more and more at your minileagues to see who are the best differentials to get in.

I only ever focus on my money mini leagues, and more so to those that are easier to win (i.e not full of FFS members 🙂 ). As the season progresses I will generally know my closest rivals teams player for player and start looking at differentiating if I'm chasing.

Now of course if that differential does well my rank will shoot up but sometimes you play riskier to win that mini league even if it's detrimental to rank.

Additionally in my first 2-3 seasons I won my only cash minileagues very far in advance of the season finishing so I took my foot off so to speak and started taking 'fun hits'. I think in my first season I made -8 point hits in the last 4-5 gameweeks as there was no way I was losing my money. Took a hit to my rank but I didn't mind.

These days I'd probably play a bit safer to keep the rank up but in the past I've not been so bothered.

It's my first year playing FPL, so OR is only a number. Trying to win my ML against people I've played football with in real life (which I'm currently leading thanks to this site) is enjoyment enough, and plenty competitive in its own right.

The one week cash prize sites are pretty good I've had some joy.

Effectively its just a Scout Picks XI - I tend to pick 3 from a defence you fancy for a clean sheet then pick on form n fixture for the rest as normal, but with no long term consideration.

Also worth mentioning....and I've posted this before....

My son's school mini league...http://fantasy.premierleague.com/my-leagues/714390/standings/ (follow the link to Wakey Wakey Wakey family mini league)

Whilst I much prefer driving my brother mad with my picks my son is much more serious these days and determined to win his school mini league again.

He is nothing more than a sneaky cheat who, every week, picks my/our brains for the template/best picks off this site....and goes with that. His team is in effect the template off this site (largely)...So really I always know roughly where I would be if I didn't take so many hits simply playing against opponents instead of OR. (Is he a cheat or simply using the best info available to him?...mmm)

He's in the top 10k btw/ we are in the top 10k btw...

Not me that's for sure. Your OR is the be all and end all as far as I'm concerned.

It earns you status and street cred. Comes in handy when the haterz come calling which in my case, is quite often.

As I've said many times, if you play for OR, your mini-league will take care of itself.

I haven't played for overall rank in years. I run a very aggressive mini league for a large cash prize and my decisions each week are almost solely based on my competitors in that league.

I like using this site to stay ahead of the curve, but if I ever get in front I've been known to make such dastardly moves as bring players in my opponents have even if I don't rate them. Defensive captain choices, benching risky differentials... nothing is beyond me.

Of course the opposite is also true, so if I'm chasing hanging on to costa and making him captain each week to try and make up the ground has been my, largely unsucessful tactic, so far this season...

And yeah, we also have a monthly prize, and people have regularly taken minus 12 hits on the eve of a new month to set their teams up for the month.

im going for my h2h league and have taken hits foe 44 points this season.
my main reason is bench boost and triple captain.
because people are going to use them against leader later in the season so i dont mind losing some games in the start of season to build up team value to make a good finish.
ofcause i try to avoid taking hits when i play vs teams in the top of the league
my overall rank is still fine 20k so it have worked fine

i play for m/l head2head etc, always look at position in them before or rank, then hopefully o r comes with good m/l positions, i joined ufpl last week to do same, to try and have a go at monthly prizes
m/l are more fun, as we have a lot of banter between family, friends, workmates etc, no one ever mentions o r, just m/l positions, good luck to all

Having got to a good position in The Hall of Fame, I feel compelled to keep trying for good ORs to try and maintain (or even improve) this position. The day I stop trying to do that, I will just give up FPL rather than slide into HoF obscurity

I'm sorry but I dot agree with any of this. Everything that you can win is won by points, minus hits. And overall rank is exactly the same. It's always been a case of just working out the best way to get points and the ranks will take care of themselves.

Now MLs matter. More than league, but to say getting a high rank doesn't help/happen due to this is naive. They are heavily linked

The only exception could be the monthly prize and taking hits the month before. However bar in the big main game this is also flawed because I don't know a single person that's entered a league where a monthly prize is more important that overall and ALL leagues have the full year as the most important. Equally in H2H you don't throw away a win v an easy competitor by taking 20 hits as that's counter productive.

Overall rank may not be the pure aim of most people, agreed, but it happens if you do well. MLs are always more important but victories come hand in hand.

I do play for OR, FPL and UFPL. I'm mostly focussed on the latter (have been from the start) because it doesn't require me mulling over transfers each week (even though having 9 injuries is really annoying), and this has also been going better (currently top 500).

I guess for English players it is not that much different, but for me (Dutch) I do also find joy in the national ranking. In UFPL there are only 5 of us, so winning that won't be that spectacular, but in FPL it is a nice subsample to keep track of.

          Why not?

Sanchez getting a rest has been a source of discussion for weeks now - keeps getting mentioned on the Scoutcast.

Wenger seems to be indicating that isn't going to happen right now. When will it?

A hot topic doesn't have to be a long post every time.

This. There's nothing to discuss here and will unnecessarily cause another hot topic to be knocked off the list. I really like the Hot Topics section but a lot of people are dismissive of it. 'Topics' like this don't help.

If it wasn't for the hamstring news I'd have probably left it. As above the will Sanchez be rested discussion keeps on cropping up so this would have been a good discussion topic - possibly in a new post though with a bit more but as I said above, a hot topic doesn't have to be a long post.

I'm a stubborn bugger. I lay a plan and I stick to it for better or worse, usually worse. For example last week, knew I should go for Luka or Kane for Pelle but I had a plan to get Kun in this week for free and decided to save.

Well, this week I have Kun. And still neither of Lukaku or Kane. I do have a suspended Alli though... I suck at this game!

        That's a great choice 🙂

I love watching Kun play with him captain. It's one of the best feelings in the game. For me personally, he's essential.

A holding mid and a striker is surely a priority.

He'll end up buying an attacking mid to compete with Ozil, Cazorla, Ramsey, Sanchez, Ox, Theo 😀
