Wayne Rooney could be back for United this weekend. Daniel Sturridge is set to remain sidelined for Liverpool, Mousa Dembele is back in training for Spurs, whilst Alexis Sanchez remains hopeful of returning in time for Arsenal’s head-to-head with City.

Rooney Close to United Return

Having sat out Manchester United’s last two league ties with an ankle injury, Wayne Rooney could return for their home tie against Norwich City this Saturday.

The Scout Says: Prior to succumbing to injury, Rooney was in the midst of the worst form of his career, carding just two goals in 12 outings. His inefficacy as the spearhead of Man United’s attack prompted Louis van Gaal to field him at the number-ten berth and task Anthony Martial with leading the line. Given that the former Monaco frontman has recorded just one shot on target across his previous four starts, it’s fair to say he’s fared no better than Rooney with regards to finishing. Ultimately, Martial boasts a superior shot-conversion rate (18.8%) than the likes of Harry Kane (13.1%), Graziano Pelle (12.2%) and Odion Ighalo (18.2%), but he’s suffering from the Red Devils’ turgid build-up play. Only Newcastle United (114) and West Bromwich Albion (103) have carved out fewer key passes than Van Gaal’s troops (123) this term, which discourages investment in their attack ahead of a favourable festive schedule (NOR, sto, CHE, SWA, new).

Sturridge Set to Remain Sidelined

Daniel Sturridge looks set to miss Liverpool’s trip to Watford this Sunday as he has not yet returned to full training.

The Scout Says: In a similar vein to Tottenham Hotspur – who’ve netted just twice since their 4-1 mauling of West Ham United – Liverpool’s attack has slowed to a simmer in light of their head-turning 4-1 victory at the Etihad. Aside from notching just three goals in as many outings, the Reds chalked up just 11 shots on target over that stretch and posted the third-worst shot accuracy (22.9%). Philippe Coutinho (8.5) made his return from a hamstring knock against West Bromwich Albion and remains the most alluring route into Liverpool’s offence. Although he didn’t prolong his scoring streak (four goals in four), the Brazilian playmaker placed joint-second among all midfielders for shots on target (three). Jordan Henderson (6.5) bolstered his case for investment with a goal and assist against the Baggies, though it remains to be seen just how much his minutes are managed over the Christmas period, following his return from a lengthy absence.

Dembele Back in Training

Free from a foot injury that sidelined him last Gameweek, Mousa Dembele has returned to training ahead of Spurs’ trip to Southampton:

The Scout Says: Dembele struggled for starts last season but has arguably been the Lilywhites’ most improved player this term, garnering widespread acclaim for his dominant midfield displays. The Belgium international scored both of his league goals while operating on the right flank in Spurs’ 4-2-3-1 set-up but has since dropped back into the double pivot, with Dele Alli (5.1) pushing up to the number-ten berth. Incidentally, the latter has emerged as a viable fifth midfielder, bagging three goals and assists in 14 outings. Across the course of the entire campaign, Alli charts second among Tottenham’s midfield contingent for attempts (22), shots inside the box (11) and shots on target (eight) – making him a solid pick-up ahead of an agreeable trio of fixtures (sou, NOR, wat).

Kaboul Back for Sunderland

Speaking to Sunderland’s official website, Younes Kaboul revealed that he’s recovered from illness and will be in line to start against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge:

“I feel a little bit better; I had flu on a Friday. I was feeling really down and I was not 100% for the game but I’ve recovered and I’ll be ready for the next game. It is a very busy schedule over Christmas but we need the points, so we will take all the games coming up as cup finals to get the maximum points we can.”

The Scout Says: The Black Cats defence – bar a 6-2 demolition at the hands of Everton in Gameweek 11 – has proven harder to breach during Sam Allardyce’s nascent reign at the club. Over the last four Gameweeks, only four teams conceded fewer goals (four) than the Wearsiders and only Stoke City (three) carded more clean sheets (two). Moreover, they charted in the bottom eight with regards to shots inside the box surrendered (29) during that stretch. Ranking top among all defenders for attempts (seven) since Gameweek 13, Patrick van Aanholt (4.6) is the pick of Sunderland’s rearguard, but their unforgiving schedule (che, mci, LIV) tempers our enthusiasm.

Sanchez Hopeful on Recovery

According to reports in the Evening Standard, Alexis Sanchez is determined to recover from a hamstring problem to be passed fit for Arsenal’s home encounter against Manchester City on Monday. The Chilean returned to training earlier in the week and initial signs “have been encouraging”.

The Scout Says: Since Sanchez limped off at Carrow Road in Gameweek 14, Arsenal have won three successive matches in all competitions, scoring eight goals in the process. Arsene Wenger will be reluctant to take any unnecessary risks with the player, who suffered a real slump in form prior to his injury and produced just a single assist in his last five league appearances. In saying that, Monday’s clash is a key encounter and while it seems certain that Sanchez won’t start all four of the upcoming league outings (MCI, sou, BOU, NEW), Wenger could pick and choose when to play him if he can prove his fitness. A fully-fit Sanchez could have repercussions up top, too – with the Chilean back on board, Wenger would have the option of fielding Theo Walcott as a striker, thus affording Olivier Giroud a break. In light of Mesut Ozil’s exceptional consistency (attacking returns in 10 successive starts) and Aaron Ramsey’s rise to prominence (two goals and one assist in two) since his switch to the double pivot, there are strong alternatives to the Chilean as a route into the Gunners’ attack for those who feel a festive punt is just a little too risky.

Anyone here bringing Deulofeu in? Looks worth a punt to me. Not sure how Leicester or Newcastle defence could cope with his pace and dribling.

Although lack of goal threat is worrying.

    Moreno Alderweireld Kolarov

    Giroud Ighalo Lukaku

All good? Any help greatly appreciated.

I think a better way of explaining it is If Arsenal draw 0-0 or win 1-0 or even lose then you have limited points for 3 players yet you have a more variation of players from different teams you're less likely to have 3 games end 0-0 etc...
IDC really if Arsenal are on form I'd have 3 attackers because why not and I'm an Arsenal fan myself, think I'm just trying to explain that point

    3. Worzel Gummidge
      10 years, 7 months ago

I am going with last 2 only until sanchez does something. Might even get Ramsey and Walcott as my 2. Some money saved but not to the detriment of points IMO. caveat is that I am assuming Walcott will either start up top or on the flank and not miss loads of matches 🙂

Because even for a good match for the team you're not guaranteed the points - a 1-0 win means that at least one of your attackers has missed out. And a bad match sees you tumble down the rankings. There will be an inevitable mix of highs and lows but over time the lows will almost certainly outweigh the highs.

If they're all good options individually then surely over time you will climb. Maybe a little more variance in points than having a split of teams but I'm not even sure thats true

Try it - KoL and Kuqi have given examples of it working. I think it's too many eggs in the same basket but I wouldn't treble up on defenders either but many have had success with this too. For what it's worth, I don't think you'll keep it - a couple of bad matches for Arsenal (with associated red arrows) and I think you'll drop the experiment - that's my prediction. But happy to be proved wrong as I like innovative ideas such as this - even though I often lack the balls to risk it myself.

      Completely agree with you anon88.

      Some illogical responses IMO.

I'm not saying the triple up is necessarily good but disagree completely with the idea that tripling is somehow bad. This is a case of people unable to take themselves out of the equation and realise each pick should be considered independetly of their own team. Unless consistency is more important than overall points of course because the swings will be higher and lower.

I would argue with your point that it is illogical. We have been given 2 examples of when it may have worked - only 2. And neither of these have been with 3 midfielders from the same team. I'm not saying that it won't work - I'm saying that it hasn't so far.

          Yup.

Picks have to be chosen both independently and part of a bigger picture. The fact is when Arsenal blank by default you have 3 midfielders that have blanked. Eggs all in one basket. Arsenal don't put 5+ past teams on a consistent basis.

You've got to evaluate the upside with the risk that they'll blank occasionally.

I don't see them blanking often, and they do score 3-5 goals semi regularly.

I guess it comes down to your play style (and maybe which team you support! As a gooner i would definitely consider it)

never, ever triple up on the arsenal attack - only ever one off game from a 5/6 point haul for half your attacking unit in one match

arsenal just aren't consistent enough a side - and they never tend to score a lot in the bigger matches (this year against united was a massive and rare exception)

With a maximum of only 2 goal involvements per goal having 3 players from one side means it's guarantees that one player will blank with every goal scored.

This means that you'll need at least 2 goals scored per game to guarantee one of those players does not blank. If you limit it to 2 you COULD have full involvement from all players with just 1 goal scored.

Arsenals average goal scored is under 2 per game.

Now Taking this logic it means Arsenal need to score 33% more goals than the possible alternative.

Not sure this is likely with a choice of almost any player.

Then it comes to player choices. Mahrez and vardy are heavily acclaimed this year and they assist each other. This makes that double up dynamite. Giroud/Walcott will be taking points off the 3 you mentioned also.

In conclusion is stick to 2 from a side and get in one of the other high performers to maximise points potential.

Not really. It's highlighting that there are a lot of possibilities where 2 Arsenal and 1 from another club will outscore 3 Arsenal. You will have the 3rd top scoring Arsenal mid at best if you're choosing 3 Arsenal mids - that's a given.

Say over the season the players get these totals:

                      Ramsey 190
                      Sanchez 210
                      Ozil 205

                      Don't worry about the totals.

If you owned just Sanchez you would get 210pts. If you owned Sanchez and Ozil, you would get 210pts+205pts, Sanchez would still score 210pts, owning Ozil would not affect his score.

Look at it from a numbers point of view (assuming only midfielders for simplicity of numbers).

Arsenal win 3-0. Your max points will be three goals and three assists in total from your three players.

3*5 and 3*3=24 points in total.

If you have three attackers from three different teams and each team wins 3-0. You could get 3 goals for each player (so up to 9 goals in total).
      (3*5)*3=45 points in total.

i.e. by tripling on Arsenal, you are actually limiting your overall points ceiling. This ignores concerns of bps being shared/missed out on for players of the same time which affects it further.

I accept the likelihood of various players scoring 3-0 will be low and that fixture difficulty will come into the equation but to me, tripling up on one team has the feeling of a gambler going all in on a bet? Possible it will work out but as educated players we should be trying to play the odds as best we can?

Agree that you limit your upside in a single gameweek, but we're not trying to get the highest game week score. We're trying to have the highest overall points at the end of the season.

The distribution of game week points will look different than having players from different teams but we don't care unless we're playing for something other than overall points.

If Sanchez, Ozil and Ramsey are all good options individually and better than their alternatives then maximising overall points is having all 3 of them

I think the argument with baps and coverage is that it limits the ceiling of points you can get in a particular GW. However, if 3 players from the same team are going to be the 3 top scorers over a longer period then it does make sense to own them all.

If planned for a limited period, say 3 gw's because of awesome fixtures yes! Long term no.

      In the long term...

Would cause benching issues if Arsenal face a tough fixture.

Also if Arsenal lose an easy game and your players blank it would affect most people's psychology and potentially lead to bad decisions elsewhere.

Investment managers diversify their portfolio's for a reason, to produce stable returns over the long term.

People always come out with arguments about coverage and the fact that you can't have all players get maximum bonus points but I think this argument is flawed you could say that by having more players from the same team you are more likely to ensure that you get 3 bonus points from Arsenal games. Successful triple ups that I've had in the past are Gerrard, Sturridge and Suarez and Yaya, Silva and Aguero. Mahrez, Vardy and Albrighton would have worked well this season, or Barkley, Lukaku and Delofou. It's all about getting in as many high scoring players within the budget constrwints. I currently have triple Stoke defence because I think they offer the best value. If Arsenal start performing I would definitely consider the midfield triple, you're only ever 1 week away from changing changing it again. The only problem I can see is if a game was in danger of being called off.

If you consider them all to be good enough individually, then I don't see why not. The variance will be greater perhaps, but it's the points expectancy that really only should matter.

Many people warn against putting all your eggs in one basket, but let's oversimplify: if I have one good basket and one bad basket, I'm quite happy to put all my eggs in the good one. Of course, this game has quite a lot of good baskets at the moment...

As for the argument of "what if Arsenal blank or win 1-0"; well, if you have three individually excellent fantasy-point-scoring attacking players in one team, you're rarely going to be restricted to just one goal, let alone blank. It will happen occasionally, but on average, you'll be doing great.

OK, I did think of one thing against this strategy, or at least something to consider: when that team's form and/or fixtures take a turn to the worse (like maybe an important enabler in the team gets injured or the team get collectively fatigued), you will need to have an escape plan. Have an extra transfer at hand or a wildcard ready. But at the very worst it's only going to cost you two hits, and that worst case scenario won't come up often. I suppose quite commonly one of those three players will lose form before the others, just keep your eyes open. There may also be some extra rewards for the flexibility of having a more diverse team when double and blank gameweeks arrive; just something to keep in mind.

The reason this hasn't worked historically with three midfielders (or at least no-one has come up with examples yet) is probably that it's rare for a team to have three midfielders all playing in an attacking enough role and also firing on all cylinders. With one forward and two midfielders it's a bit more common – you could even make a case for having all three of Lukaku, Barkley and Deulofeu at the moment. On a just slightly lesser scale, it would have been folly not to double up on Vardy and Mahrez, for example, as soon as you realized just how good their form really was. It would actually be quite incredible if it wasn't sometimes the best move to even triple up on a team's attacking assets.

Perfect illustration of how it can work. That is 50pts per player over a 9 gw stretch or almost 5.5ppg which is pretty decent. The most glaring thing about this is that Ramsey was not playing cm so his pts are a lot poorer than you would expect going forward.

The thing to focus on is it doesn't matter if one of the players doesn't score in any given gw, it only matters what they score over the period they are in your team. I'm not saying it is a good idea but it's not necessarily a bad one just because your gw pts are limited on any given gw

Frankly, the main things it shows are that, when all three have started:

              1. Ramsey has only got attacking returns once.
              2. None of them has got attacking returns if Özil blanks.

Third, a bit less important, would be that only twice has any of the other two outscored Özil, who has scored more than the other two 4 times out of 9.

You are placing to much store in those stats which are pretty meaningless where Ramsey is concerned as he wasn't playing cm for those games.

Also you are reading too much into Ozil stats as he has been in phenomenal form so what significance his scoring so far will have in relation to what he will score in the future is entirely dependant on him continuing this improbable form. Should this form change for whatever reason then it could just as easily be Ramsey or Sanchez that is the one outscoring the other two as ozil has been so far (Sanchez did do it last season and Ramsey did do it the year before).

Basically all these stats show is what I posted above ie three players from the same team can score well between them and if one of them is not quite doing as well as the others then you almost have insurance with two likely to be scoring decently at any time.

I'd only recommend it as a strategy if you really think there is no other players from another team that will outscore one of the three players from the same team.

            Sanchez + Özil returns: 4
            Sanchez + Ramsey returns: 0
            Özil + Ramsey returns: 0
            Sanchez only returns: 0
            Özil only returns: 1
            Ramsey only returns: 0
            All blank: 3

I know which one I am not going to have when all three are available.

Your theory, from a stats perspective is correct. Any 3 players can blank. I think it is a decent option. The problem is fixtures. One tough fixture and your ability to have flexibility is limited. Before an outstanding run of fixtures i would say go for it.

Costa - Fabregas - Hazard worked well last year.

I think that here it's a bit different because of Giroud. Think he'll stay up top, and will get the goals, so it will be here a matter of getting 4 FW to perform, which I don't think will happen.

Think that Sanchez will either keep underperforming, or it will come on the account of Ramsey

Great debate. I'm generally apprehensive to such a strategy as I almost definitely wouldn't own all three for a sustained period of time and thus have a lot of eggs in a basket which doesn't have the season in which to articulate its proper odds - ie a couple of blanks and I'm not ignoring the form players for the sake of getting the up side of the probability equation on my triple up.

One point in favour though, don't think it's been mentioned, is that the triple up gets you an extra three-quarter clean sheet from a generally good defensive side...

    Sanchez's last 5 scores were: 2,3,2,2,4

He was the most frustrating member of the template team and most people round here were almost relieved that he got injured and took the decision to drop him out of their hands.

Why are so many people so desperate to bring him back in at the slightest sniff of playing time?

Well the main reason he wasn't performing was due to a mix of niggly injuries and fatigue and his last two performances (CL and vs. Norwich) he looked sharp again

Coupled with 3 weeks rest and 2 weeks training he should be close to 100% over xmas.
