Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 20

The next Suspension Tightrope of the season is already up and running after Newcastle’s Jack Colback earned his ninth caution of the campaign in yesterday’s 1-0 loss at the Emirates. If the midfielder is booked at any point between now and Sunday of Gameweek 33 (April 9), he’ll earn an automatic two-match ban.

With 18 rounds of league fixtures still to play out, Colback looks in line to break an unprecedented record – no player has ever amassed 15 Premier League bookings in a single season, with six players – Olivier Dacourt, Mark Hughes, Paul Ince, Robbie Savage, Cheick Tiote and Lee Cattermole – all accruing 14 over previous campaigns.

Colback is one of seven players on the New Year’s Tightrope. Norwich’s weekend match-winner Alex Tettey is tucked in just behind on eight yellows, whilst Liverpool midfielders Emre Can and Lucas sit on seven apiece, along with City’s Eliaquim Mangala, Stoke left-back Erik Pieters and Tottenham’s scorer at Everton, Deli Alli.

Elsewhere yesterday, a caution for Cattermole in Sunderland’s 3-1 home win over Villa means he has now earned 83 yellows in the Premier League – that takes him to eleventh overall in the list. United’s Wayne Rooney is eighth on 86 bookings, though Everton’s veteran midfielder Gareth Barry leads the way on 109 top-flight yellows.

In terms of team card counts, Villa’s four cautions yesterday means they are now level with Tottenham as the most culpable – both sides have collected 43 bookings, with Erik Lamela earning his sixth of the campaign at Goodison. West Brom are next best on 40 yellows.

Looking at the new bans, Bournemouth’s Simon Francis is set to miss next weekend’s FA Cup trip to Birmingham after he was sent off for denying a goal scoring opportunity during the Cherries’ goalless draw at Leicester.

Post-match, manager Eddie Howe confirmed that, although he disagreed with the decision, he won’t contest Francis’ dismissal:

“I didn’t think it (Francis’ challenge) was a foul from my angle, he definitely touched the ball. It was a great recovery tackle. It’s not a foul, a penalty or a sending off. It was a very even game before that point, a high tempo game and very high quality. We had some great chances in the first half but when we went down to 10 men we showed character and it’s a great point for us. We won’t appeal the red card as it’s a one-game ban and the FA Cup is coming up.”

Victor Wanyama, meanwhile, will serve a two-match ban after he was dismissed in Southampton’s defeat at Norwich. The Kenyan has already been dismissed once this season (in Gameweek 11 at Bournemouth) and will therefore have his suspension extended by an additional match, which rules him out of the FA Cup encounter against Palace and the Gameweek 21 home match with Watford.

Wanyama took to social media to say sorry for his sending off after he came under post-match criticism from Saints boss Ronald Koeman:

“I would just like to apologise to the manager, fans and everyone at the club for my red card yesterday. It was reckless and irresponsible and I should have used my experience to have not let it happen, especially when I was on a yellow card. I now just want to focus on getting back on the pitch and helping the team as much as I can.”

Stoke’s Geoff Cameron is set to miss the next three domestic matches after he was sent off for violent conduct in the weekend derby loss at West Brom. The US international is sidelined for the upcoming Capital One Cup clash with Liverpool and FA Cup trip to Doncaster in addition to the Gameweek 21 home match against Norwich. Mark Hughes has suggested he may appeal the decision, though, with Cameron’s sending off meaning that the Potters have matched West Ham for total red cards (four) this season. Three of those dismissals have arrived against the Baggies, with Ibrahim Afellay and Charlie Adam also sent packing in a Gameweek 4 home loss to Tony Pulis’ team.

Those players join Watford’s Nathan Ake on the naughty step. The on-loan defender served the first of a three-match suspension during yesterday’s home loss to City and will also miss upcoming clashes with Newcastle (FA Cup) and Southampton (Gameweek 21) before returning to contention for the trip to Swansea on January 18.

    Hi all. Any advice welcome.

    Butland,
    Bellerin, Dann, Cresswell
    Ozil, Walcott, KDB, Mahrez
    Vardy, Kane, Lukaku
    McCarthy, Deulefeu, Simpson, Dawson,

2 FT and 2.6m in the bank.

    A) Vardy to Ighalo
    B) Deulufeu to Alli
    C) Walcott to ?
    D) 2 of the above.

If it were possible I would do Walcott to Alli and Vardy to Aguero but i'm 0.3 short.

              Could do:
              Walcott > Alli
              Vardy > Aguero
              Deu > Bournemouth mid

Would be a 4 point hit but i would get Aguero and still have about 1.3m in the bank.

Yeah, better wait 2-3 games and decide on his current form then. It's too risky to ruin your team for just 1 player that isn't even in-form

    Currently have:

    de Gea
    Bellerín Kolarov Wollscheid
    Alli De Bruyne Mahrez Özil
    Lukaku Vardy Kane

    Subs: Schmeichel Alderweireld Richards Ramsey

    2FT, 0.2 itb

I'm thinking of downgrading Bellerin/Kolarov and Ramsey to get Aguero and benchwarmers.

    Vardy, Ramsey, Bellerin/Kolarov > Aguero, Stanislas, Smith(-4)

Leaving me with(if I drop Kolarov):

    de Gea
    Bellerín Alderweireld Wollscheid
    Alli De Bruyne Mahrez Özil
    Lukaku Aguero Kane

    Subs: Schmeichel, Smith, Richards, Stanislas

Undecided on Kolarov/Bellerin but think its worth it for Aguero.

    Thoughts?

Better wait for cup games (Man City have 2) before getting Kun back imo.. He had to be in top form before bet on him and probably ruin your squad.. I have exact money to do Vardy>Kun for free but Kane and Ighalo are much better options atm

It probably is best to wait. I'm the same if i bring in Aguero, will lose out of price rises etc but it would be a lot worse if we got him in and he were to get injured then!

The only positive was that even a score of 31, and a GW rank around 3m, only brought a drop of 10k. At least a terrible score in a low scoring week is much better than a terrible score in a high scoring week!

I'm still a bit confused about why playing your WC before a DGW is the best time, ideally you'd have as many DGW players as possible (DGW last year taught us that).

The problem I see then tho, following that DGW you are with a team with players from 3/4 clubs.

My thinking is plan as far in advance as possible, bring in the DGW players with transfers / maybe one hit. Then WC after the double to get them out / bring who you want in.

Am I looking at it wrong?

And last year people with wildcards really benefited towards the end. I tried to do it with just free transfers and it was difficult.

It's not necessarily about just putting them in but also taking them out. Use your free transfers to get an excellent DGW team but then use your wildcard to get rid of those with poor fixtures etc after

The year before people got badly stung by selling their SGW players. The existing picks did better over a two week period by quite a margin., even playing one game less.

The basic answer is we don't know right now.

Until the fixtures are confirmed and we see who has decent fixtures before/after then it's just a discussion on a tactic that may or may not work.

In fact even when we know the fixtures and players it will still be something that may or may not work 🙂

Yep....agreed, and course the impossible part is to faclor in how many extra pts an early WC brings to offset the DGW....in fact it may go the other way if somebody makes a Bllx of the early WC.

I'm hoping for a big DGW 37. Then the damage will be minimised. Hoping to get a team full of DGWers and differentials for GW36, play bench boost GW37. Could be a huge anti-climax.

Just happened to be an example of all those performing well right now....

Just because a few are performing well doesn't mean a wildcard could help pad out the rest of the squad.

I don't think you're looking at it wrong - It's a viable strategy. You do need to factor in what the fixtures are, though - the 3/4 teams you focus on for the DGW may well be ones you want to continue with anyway.

I'm on your side, it's not that hard to bring in as much players as you want from different teams for a DGW but it's much harder to have a balanced squad after that DGW especially if some of these DGW teams have a blank in the week(s) after the DGW.

I think all those injuries he suffered, makes him to look for somewhere else (Primera or Seria A or even Argentina's Primera). He is not that jaded for goals as he was before and looks like he is struggling to play in England. His game is suffering from all the fears from new injury he has atm. One month ago in an interview he was saying' that he is looking forward to end his career in Argentina, so that's all.. I remember his spirit and unselfishness when came in England and nothing from that exist atm

His Injuries are killing his momentum, on his day he's the best striker in the world and still young. Sadly he needs to be bubble wrapped to play in the EPL, he'd do much better in a 'gentler' league where the defenders stand off the strikers a few yards and dont get stuck-in for fear of messing up their hair. He'll probably be off in a few seasons and sooner if he cant string together enough matches without getting crocked. but why count him out now?

That's what I'm thinking, budy. Italy, Spain and even Argentina suits his style much better and all those injuries makes him struggling to show his full potential and that makes him unhappy. Yes he is still younger - probably at the best age for a striker that want to win trophies all over the world but I can't see this happen at Man City. Real, Barca, Atletico or even Juventus are good places for him to reveal his full potential and fight for global awards. That's all!

Hi all. A bit of advice please. 1ft & 1.7itb.

    Butland, McCarthy
    Smalling, Toby, Bellerin, Dann, VVD
    Ozil, KDB, Mahrez, Barkley, Alli
    Lukaku, Kane, Vardy

I'm going to sell VVD & buy Cresswell. VVD is -87.9 to drop & as I'll be at work where I have no acess when he price drops would you make the transfer now.

    Thanks.

If you're positive that's the move you want to make then go for it, though there's a good chance VVD will survive another day before his price drops

Really hope Manchester City go on a decent cup run (Both FA Cup and Capital Once Cup). City DGW in GW25 and Aguero Triple Captain would be amazing!

Chances of DGW in GW25 is low I guess? Havent came across any in last 2 years.

        I don't know, though Ruth_NZ certainly thinks it's possible.

I once planned to have Kompany Silva and Agiero on a DGW about two or three years ago. All three benched for the second match that week. In fact Silva and Aguero were given the night off altogether.

I remember that I think. Don't think Pelle would want to rest them for these games this season? City are chasing Arsenal and Arsenal don't seem to drop points.

Mancini was a madman when it comes to rotation

    Thoughts on this WC team?
Need to catch up in my ML so need some differentials
Plan is Kane/Costa to Lukaku and upgrade 1 defender GW 23.

    Schmeichel - Hennessey
    Alderweireld - Williams - Wollscheid - Ake - Smith
    Ozil - Yaya - Payet - Mahrez - Alli
    Aguero - Costa - Kane

If you have Alli I'd probably go for Lukaku instead of Kane.May give you enough cash to change Yaya to Silva?

Im getting Lukaku GW23... he has City and Chelsea away next

I could upgrade yaya to silva then instead of a defender

        Thanks!

Not a west ham fan but delighted to see on Twitter theres such a buzz about Mark Nobles testimonial which I believe will be the last game played at Upton park. Love that ground and got a lot of time for Noble too, overlooked on this forum as he's not an FPL asset but a fantastic little player and says a lot that through all the managers WH have had in 10 years, he's always been a starter. Remember him breaking into the team there and being in tears when they lost a game 4-3 to Spurs when they looked dead certs to go down in the season Tevez kept them up. Heart warming stuff, well done Mark.

      Great post 😀

It won't be the last game at Upton Park though sadly.

Selling Mane and Vardy, should I get:

    A Payet and Kane
    B KDB and Ighalo
C Also sell Barkley and buy KDB, Payet and Ighalo for -4
    D Other

    My attack is:

Ozil Mahrez - Alli - Barkley - Mane
    Aguero - Lukaku - Vardy

    Thanks!
