Having analysed the latest movements among the defence and midfield over the past few days, we now turn our attentions to the men up front. With four goals and an assist from his last two appearances, Man City’s Sergio Aguero is restored to the top of our rankings, while a couple of January signings, Southampton’s Charlie Austin and Bournemouth’s Benik Afobe, arrive on our radar after making an immediate impact in their new surrounds.

It was always going to be a matter of time before Sergio Aguero returned to his best form, and with the Argentine looking particularly sharp in his past couple of outings, he returns to the summit in our latest update. The Man City striker leads all forwards for shots from inside the box over the last four Gameweeks with 16, while he is ranked second for penalty box touches over the same period with 37, just one behind Jamie Vardy. It’s no surprise to see Aguero leading the way for the Gameweek 24 Captain Poll, then, with 58% of the votes ahead of the visit to lowly Sunderland. The upcoming schedule (sun, LEI, TOT, new, liv, AVL) is pretty favourable for the Citizens, so the now 13.5-rated Aguero looks to have the perfect platform to stay amongst the goals, and provide his 26% ownership in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) with an obvious captain choice for the foreseeable future.

Harry Kane moves back up a spot this week having scored for the second successive match in Spurs’ 3-1 win at Selhurst Park. The England international leads all forwards for shots on target (nine) over the last four Gameweeks, and while the upcoming fixtures (nor, WAT, mci, SWA, whm, ARS) are mixed for Mauricio Pochettino’s side, the 10.0-priced striker continues to provide a reliable source of Fantasy points.

Following a frustrating blank in a plum home fixture against Swansea, Everton’s Romelu Lukaku drops a place in our rankings. The Belgian has now gone four matches without a goal, and over that period has only hit the target with one of his 14 attempts. While the 9.1-valued forward has built up plenty of credit, given he’s scored 15 goals and bagged five assists already this season, another blank at home to Newcastle in Gameweek 24 could see some of his 48% ownership in FPL begin to ponder other options. The Toffees do face a reasonable run of fixtures (NEW, sto, WBA, (blank), avl, WHM) over the coming weeks, though Lukaku owners will need to factor in an upcoming blank in Gameweek 27.

Having served up five goals and two assists in his last five matches, there’s no doubt Chelsea interim manager Guus Hiddink is getting the best out of Diego Costa. The Spain international zooms up our ladder this week, then, after recovering from a slight knee concern. The Blues do also face a fairly tricky run of fixtures (wat, MUN, NEW, sot, nor, STO) over the next six Gameweeks, but there’s no doubt the fiery striker could provide us with a real differential option over the coming period, with his current ownership standing at just 6% in FPL.

After delivering a 12-point haul in Watford’s 2-1 win over Newcastle, Odion Ighalo manages to maintain his position as the leading budget option among the forwards. Over 80,000 FPL bosses transferred out the Nigerian ahead of last weekend’s match, perhaps making the move a week early given the Hornets do face an unfavourable run of matches (CHE, tot, cpl, BOU, mun, LEI) over the next month or so. Given the 6.4-priced Ighalo still leads all forwards in FPL this season with 145 points, he will still remain a viable option for our three-man frontlines despite the tough upcoming schedule.

Leicester’s Jamie Vardy is also a non-mover around halfway up the Watchlist. The England international may lack that explosive potential, having managed just two double-figure hauls so far this season, but a goal and assist in his last two outings highlights an ability to keep grinding out attacking returns. The Foxes do face a pretty difficult stretch in their schedule over the next few weeks, though, (LIV, mci, ars, NOR, WBA, wat), so the 7.2-valued striker may still see his 39% ownership continue to dwindle.

Olivier Giroud sees his stock fall in our latest refresh, with Arsenal facing the toughest upcoming schedule (SOT, bou, LEI, mun, SWA, tot) in terms of attacking difficulty, according to our Season Ticker. The France international could now also be a slight rotation risk with the return to fitness of Alexis Sanchez allowing Theo Walcott to be considered as a striker once again. He was unfortunate to be substituted once the Gunners were reduced to 10 men against Chelsea last time out, but with all things considered, the 9.2-rated striker looks to hold significantly less appeal than he did just a few weeks ago.

A new entry on the Watchlist following a debut goal in Southampton’s 1-0 win at Old Trafford is Charlie Austin. The former QPR striker proved himself in the top flight with 18 goals last season, and with Ronald Koeman’s men facing a pretty kind run of fixtures following the trip to Arsenal in Gameweek 24 (WHM, swa, CHE, bou, SUN), the 7.0-priced striker could well be worth a gamble as we continue to seek out differentials.

Bournemouth’s Benik Afobe is another big climber this week having grabbed his second Premier League goal in the 1-1 draw against Sunderland. The former Wolves striker has registered a decent six shots from inside the box in just 220 minutes for the Cherries, and looks worthy of some consideration as a cheap third forward, setting us back 6.1 in FPL. Bournemouth’s forthcoming fixtures (cpl, ARS, STO, wat, SOT, new) may put off any potential suitors, though.

Sliding all the way to the bottom of the Watchlist after blanking against Southampton last time out is Man United’s Wayne Rooney. Louis van Gaal’s side continue to look devoid of attacking ideas in front of their own fans, and with home matches against Stoke and Chelsea to come over the next few weeks, the United skipper may continue to frustrate. Coming in at 10.0 in FPL, then, it’s unlikely the England international will be taking up one of our three forward slots for the time being, with so many other more appealing options currently available.

Right then... here's all the info, permutations and some strategy for the blanks in GW 30:

    Fixtures that can't be blanks:

    Leicester vs Newcastle
    Stoke vs Southampton

    Fixtures that could be blanks:

Norwich vs Man City (if Man City beat Chelsea)
Aston Villa vs Spurs (If Spurs beat Crystal Palace)
Bournemouth vs Swansea (If Bournemouth beat Everton)
Man Utd vs Crystal Palace (If Man Utd beat Shrewsbury or if Crystal Palace beat Spurs)
Sunderland vs Everton (If Everton beat Bournemouth)
West Ham vs Watford ((If West Ham beat Liverpool and Blackburn) or if Watford beat Leeds)
Arsenal vs West Brom (If Arsenal beat Hull or (if West Brom beat Peterborough and Reading))
Liverpool vs Chelsea ((If Liverpool beat West Ham and Blackburn) or if Chelsea beat Man City)

Minimum number of teams with a blank: 6

Maximum number of teams with a blank: 14

Either Swansea & Bournemouth or Everton & Sunderalnd will have blanks.

Either Man City & Norwich or Chelsea & Liverpool will have blanks (they'll all have blanks if Liverpool beat West Ham & Blackburn and Man City beat Chelsea).

Leicester, Newcastle, Southampton and Stoke won't have a blank.

The subsequent DGW will probably be in GW 34.

We'll know a bit more after the 4th round replays.

The 5th round is in GW 27 (and the replays will be in GW 30), so we'll have either 4 or 5 FTs max to prepare for the blanks after we find out who'll have them... that probably won't be enough FTs to get a full team in GW 30 without taking hits. What do you think is the best strategy to deal with this problem?

    1. Wait until after the 5th round, then take some hits.
    2. Wait until after the 5th round, don't bother taking hits, have less than 11 players in GW 30.
    3. Guess which teams are most likely to have blanks and transfer out some of their players before GW 27.

I'm gunna try and work out the likelihood of each fixture being a blank based on the betting odds for the next round of the cup, I'll add that to the Blanks Tracker page of my spreadsheet shortly.

So it'll be GW26. and I assume that the replays for this (if required) could be shoehorned into GW29 (on the Monday - provided the participants aren't in the CL), rather than in GW30 as mentioned?

Was I wrong in saying that we'll either have 4 FTs (or 5 FTs if you save an FT) after the 5th round to prepare for the blanks?

No - that's still correct. You'll still have your transfers for GW26, 27, 28 and 29 to prepare for the blanks, but there will be a week after GW26 starts before the Cup matches are played. So maybe best to not do a knee-jerk transfer straight after the weekend of Feb 13th.

indeed it might but GW34 will likely be the bigger DGW, so you could wc in 33, BB in 34 and have 2 FTs heading into 35 to start planning for 36 and 37

In summary, for GW30 we're looking at:

      Guaranteed:
      Leicester v Newcastle
      Stoke v Southampton

One of these is guaranteed but the other will not go ahead:
      Bournemouth v Swansea
      Sunderland v Everton

Probably one of these will go ahead though Liverpool could scupper it by beating West Ham away then Blackburn and if City beat Chelsea
      Norwich v Man City
      Liverpool v Chelsea

These could both go ahead, but on paper they will probably be postponed on account of the relevant FA Cup opponents:
      West Ham v Watford
      Villa v Spurs

These could both go ahead but seem very likely to be postponed due to ease of FA Cup ties:
      Arsenal v West Brom
      Utd v Palace

Never mind the niceties, it's all if's, but's and maybe's!

      If we can't answer

      1. Which team's players should I load up on?
      2. Which team's players should I sell ahead of a blank?

then there's no point to any of this 😛 sorry...

lol, we can answer 1. We can start to think about 2, if we don't think about it now it'll be too late.

Nah, WC in GW 36, get 15 DGWers, then bench boost in GW 37.

Crucially, things will be a lot clearer before GW27 when most will have blanks to transfer out.

But don't forget that 4 or 5 FTs won't be enough to get rid of enough players who'll have a blank to be able to field a full team in GW 30.

Complicated as capital 1 cup DGW are not confirmed yet, youd be safe to get leicester and southampton players and after before GW30 you should start selling players from the best teams unless they get knocked out prior to it

I don't think we should worry at all for another 2 GW's. There's fixtures before and after a DGW... planning transfers purely on the DGW is a guaranteed way of not dong well in the non-DGWs.

Most still have a WC too, so people should just chill lol

most seasons you can chill out and react to DGW/Blank news as it's announced, this season you have to plan ahead, it's gunna be more chaotic - the season's finishing earlier than normal because of Euro 2016

5th round replays won't be in GW 30 for City, Chelsea or any team still in Europa League. Chelsea has UCL and Spurs, United, and Liverpool may have Europa games Tue-Thur March 8-10. So if any teams require a replay and are still alive in Europe they would replay in GW28 causing a blank there. City in this boat as Chelsea's schedule impacts them.

Given the matchups, I would expect Liverpool and United to advance. Spurs a favorite versus Fiorentina but could lose.

The real impact is if Chelsea/City or Liverpool/Blackburn (assuming Liverpool beats WHM next week) need a replay. LIV-MCI is GW28 so a replay would cause back-to-back blanks for both. Imagine the scrambling for folks who loaded up on Pool-City in prep for a pre-GW27 DGW.

I reckon they'd play the replays on 5th round weekend and push the 5th round ties back.

Brilliant post. Thank you for your not inconsiderable efforts?

Is the overarching strategy to "manage" your way through gw30 and then WC to sort out the mess and set up for the Under DGW?

No you can get 11 players in GW 30 and 8 DGWers in GW 34 without taking hits or using your WC. Save the WC for GW 36, use bench boost for the DGW in GW 37.

Have 4 players on your bench in with a blank in GW 30 (inc a GK and 1 or 2 defenders), then use your 4 FTs between GW 30 and GW 34 to transfer in DGWers. If, in GW 34, you don't have more than 5 players (inc a GK and 1-3 defenders) with a blank in GW 35, you'll be able to filed a full team GW 35 too.

Lukaku > Valencia (West Ham) make sense to give me coverage for GW27 considering I have both Aguero and Silva? Also great form and can allow me to do Mahrez > Sanchez (or this week with a -4?)

      Opinions?

Sorry if that monster post complicated it for anybody, hopefully the spreadsheet is cleaner and easier to understand:

    Schedule: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1zcb5jGdVitByKQ8R1X4gcEBpiNY9qbLylr72btlTubc/edit#gid=629680924

    Blank Tracker:
    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1zcb5jGdVitByKQ8R1X4gcEBpiNY9qbLylr72btlTubc/edit#gid=1214293201

Anyway, what I'm doing over the next few weeks (assuming there's no DGW in GW 25) is getting rid of deadwood and replacing it with Saints and Leicester players, then after the 5th round of the cup I'll decide which 4 players who'll have a blank in GW 30 to keep and I'll ditch the rest.

Lots of ways to go about it, I'm personally planning on using my WC in GW 36 and bench boosting in GW 37 with 15 DGWers.

I reckon it's possible to get a full XI in GW 30, 8 DGWers in GW 34 and a full XI in GW 35 without using my WC or taking hits, it's gunna require a lot of planning though...

Is Berahino worth 21mil? I'm a bit torn by this transfer as a Newcastle fan because he's clearly got talent but that seems like a lot of money. Lukaku was 28mil and he's a much better player in my opinion. I just think for that kind of money you can get someone much better. Might just be me though.

I personally think he is a decent player and that fee in comparison to what other players are going for, isnt that outrageous. He has potential to be very good. He just needs someone to sort his head out. Lukaku looks great value now, less so at the time. Maybe you will think the same about Berahino in a couple of years. The market has gone mad in the last year or so

I agree with you about compared to Townsend then that probably is what he's worth but if West Brom aren't playing him because of his attitude 21mil seems a little bit too high for me. He could be worth every penny though.
