Blank and Double Gameweek Planning

With the possibility of a Double Gameweek in Gameweek 25 out of the question, we can now turn our attention to the upcoming blanks in Gameweek 27 and, more importantly, Gameweek 30. I’m sure you can figure out how to prepare for the Gameweek 27 blanks, as just four teams, Everton, Liverpool, Newcastle and Manchester City miss out.

But preparing for the Gameweek 30 blanks will be a lot more complicated.

In this article I will outline the permutations, probabilities and strategy associated with the Gameweek 30 blanks. It may seem like a long way off but trust me, one misspent transfer between now and then could directly lead to you having to take an extra four-point hit in order to have a full XI in Gameweek 30.

THE PERMUTATIONS AND PROBABILITIES

Fa Cup 5th Round Draw
(Premier League teams in bold)

Shrewsbury vs Man United

Chelsea vs Man City

Reading vs West Brom or Peterborough

Watford vs Leeds

Blackburn vs Liverpool or West Ham

Spurs vs Crystal Palace

Arsenal vs Hull

Bournemouth vs Everton

Gameweek 30 Fixtures and Blank Permutations

Arsenal vs West Brom – Blank if ARS beat HUL or if WBA beat PET and REA.

Man Utd vs Crystal Palace – Blank if MUN beat SHR or if CRY beat TOT.

West Ham vs Watford – Blank if WHU beat LIV and BLA or if WAT beat LEE.

Aston Villa vs Spurs – Blank if TOT beat CRY.

Liverpool vs Chelsea – Blank if LIV beat WHU and BLA or if CHE beat MCI.

Sunderland vs Everton – Blank if EVE beat BOU.

Norwich vs Man City – Blank if MCI beat CHE.

Bournemouth vs Swansea – Blank if BOU beat EVE.

Leicester vs Newcastle – Can’t be a blank.

Stoke vs Southampton – Can’t be a blank.

Blank Probabilities

Bet Victor are offering odds for teams to reach the FA Cup Quarter Finals, using those odds I have worked out the percentage chance of each Gameweek 30 fixture being a blank. I won’t bore you with the maths in this article, if you’d like to see the odds, click on the link to my spreadsheet at the bottom of the page.

Arsenal vs West Brom – 91.78%

Man Utd vs Crystal Palace – 91.69%

West Ham vs Watford – 83.93%

Aston Villa vs Spurs – 70.91%

Liverpool vs Chelsea – 68.75%

Sunderland vs Everton – 58.88%

Norwich vs Man City – 50%

Bournemouth vs Swansea – 41.12%

Leicester vs Newcastle – Can’t be a blank.

Stoke vs Southampton – Can’t be a blank.

ANALYSIS

Four teams definitely won’t have a blank in Gameweek 30:
Leicester, Newcastle, Southampton and Stoke.

Either Swansea & Bournemouth or Everton & Sunderland will have blanks in Gameweek 30.

Four teams have at least a 90% chance of a blank in Gameweek 30 (according to Bet Victor):
West Brom, Arsenal, Crystal Palace and Man United.

If West Ham beat Liverpool in their FA Cup replay on Tuesday 9th February:
Either Liverpool & Chelsea or Man City & Norwich will have blanks in Gameweek 30.

STRATEGY

To maximise your free transfers between now and Gameweek 30 so you can get as close to a full XI in Gameweek 30 as possible, without taking hits you should follow these rules (split into two sections: before and after the final game of FA Cup 5th Round weekend on February 21st)

Before February 21st:

  • Spend the fewest possible FTs (either 0,1 or 2 depending on how many FTs you have right now).
  • Only buy LeicesterNewcastleSouthampton and Stoke players.
  • Only sell West BromArsenalCrystal Palace and Man United players (if West Ham beat Liverpool in their FA Cup replay, you could sell a West Ham or Watford player too).

After February 21st:

  • Only buy players who won’t have a blank in Gameweek 30.
  • Only sell players who will have a blank in Gameweek 30 (or players who will miss Gameweek 30 due to injury).

MINIMUM ACTIVE GAMEWEEK 30 PLAYERS

If you’d like to know the minimum number of active players you can get in Gameweek 30 without hits, follow these steps (it might seem obscure, but it works):

  1. 5 + the number of FTs you have right now.
  2. Add your total number of LeicesterNewcastle, Southampton and Stoke players.
  3. Add whichever number is smaller:
    a) Your total number of Everton & Sunderland players.
    or
    b) Your total number of Swansea & Bournemouth players.
  4. If Liverpool lose to West Ham in their FA Cup replay next Wednesday, add whichever number is smaller:
    a) Your total number of Liverpool & Chelsea players.
    or
    b) Your total number of Man City & Norwich players.
  5. Subtract 1 if you’re reading this after the Gameweek 25 deadline.
  6. Subtract 2 if you’re reading this after the Gameweek 26 deadline, etc.

Schedule

Q & As

Q. When will the Double Gameweeks be?
A. Most, if not all of the blanks from Gamweek 30 will be rescheduled to Gameweek 34, which will be the biggest Double Gameweek of the season. There will be another set of blanks due to clashes with the FA Cup Semi Finals in Gameweek 35 and the subsequent Double Gameweek will be in Gameweek 37. There will probably be at least one more mini-Double Gameweek after Gameweek 30 but it’s harder to predict when that might be. Check the Schedule section of my spreadsheet for more detail.

Q. How many Double Gameweek players can you get in Gameweek 34 if you have a full XI in Gameweek 30?
A. At least eight without hits. Between Gameweek 30 and Gameweek 34 you should transfer in some players who have a Double Gameweek in Gameweek 34 and don’t have a blank in Gameweek 35.

Q. When should I use my Wildcard, Triple Captain and Bench Boost chips?
A. I think the best time to use the second Wildcard is in Gameweek 36, then Bench Boost with 15 Double Gameweek players in Gameweek 37. I’ll use my Triple Captain chip in one of the other Double Gameweeks.

In your last Q and A, you state that the best timing for the second wildcard is gw36, but you also say that gw34 will be the biggest dgw. Wouldn't then gw33 be a better week to use the second wildcard, to get 15 dgw'ers with bench boost in the big gw34?

I think in the 37 Dgw since the teams playing twice are the FA cup semi finalists this will affect them (4 teams) and their opponents in the blank week (up to 4 other teams). So in total as many as 8 teams. (3 players allowed from each team would mean easily enough for a full squad of double game weekers. I think maybe the later Dgw is more preferable for the wild card as it holds less risk as you will only have that unusual looking team for a couple of weeks opposed to beig stuck with it for longer. What you reckon?

That's probably true. And after all, it doesn't matter how many games there are in the dgw really, as long as you have 11 (or 15) players with two games, I guess.

YEh exactly. Ony other thing to consider i think would be the fixtures themselves. One of the Dgws make have much more favourable fixtures fr teams you want the players from

There could be as many as 12 teams with a DGW in GW 37, remember the blanks from GW 27 (NEW vs MCI & LIV vs EVE) still need to be rescheduled, one of those games could be played in GW 34, but they can't both be.

There is likely to be 6-7 matches moved to GW34 & 5-6 matches moved to GW37.
My initial thinking was to WC GW36 as there would be less DGW's in GW37 and so therefore a full team is more likely to give a bigger move up the rankings. But now I think picking the GW with the best fixtures is the most sensible move. Although I do think WC in gw34 does give you a good chance to maximise both DGW's and the blank.

Bear in mind, also, that some teams may have even more games to reschedule. For instance. If Everton get to the FA Cup semi-finals, their games in GW27, 30 and 35 will have to be rescheduled. So they might even end up having to play a triple gameweek towards the end of the season. Might be worth holding onto the old Triple Captain in case such a bonkers scenario came to pass...

i wildcarded due to my terrible defence then read this article....OOPS!!!!

My team now though stands at:

    Butland/Forster
    Johnson/VVD/Fonte/Fuchs/Alderwield
    Barkley/Payet/Mahrez/Arnautovic/Alli
    Vardy/Aguero/Kane

Think my team is looking decent for the next month or so with a few tweaks to be done to suit fixtures etc.

Still got 2.5m in the bank, will have 2 transfers next week. Only ever going to use 1 transfer each week so have 2 in the bank for when i need to jiggle the blank and DGWs around.

    What do you guys reckon?

You're almost too well prepared for GW 30, it'd be better to have one GK with a blank and one with a game. Next week is the FA Cup QFs so wait until Feb 22nd then plan your transfers up to GW 30 and wait for DGW announcements.

cheers, I've swapped forster for de gea. think man utd should cruise past shrewsbury so safe bet on them blanking 12th march also they play WBA that week and they are still in the cup. Stokes fixtures rotate quite well with man utd as well.

Great transfer, if I have 11 players with a game in GW 30 and still need to spend a transfer I'll do Hennessey -> De Gea if I can afford it.

First of all, thanks for the very helpful article. Wish I had read this a little bit earlier.

Going by your rules, I seem to have a minimum of 10 players for GW 30.

    My team is

    Butland Hennessey

    Toby Bellerin Dawson Daniels Simpson

    Sanchez Ozil Firmino Payet Mahrez

    Aguero Lukaku Ighalo

Got 1FT this week. Any suggestions for a transfer? Based on the article I was thinking of going Dawson > Targett.

Only if you're happy with the rotation risk. If he plays - uber cheap player playing for a good side, if he doesn't, it was a waste. I put in VVD for this reason.

Yeah, there's a chance, it's difficult to predict what teams will do if they can't find space for a replay though, they might delay their tie in the next round of the cup, they might delay a Premier League game (causing a blank).

One thing I don't see in this article is dates for potential FA Cup replays and how this could affect things? Do we know?

      • 10 Years
      8 years, 2 months ago

its a bit tricky as Monday 7th March is available to everyone but Chelsea vs Man City. However that would mean playing it 2 days after a PL game. The alternative is the replay gets moved back to GW30 and both teams suffer a blank gameweek. The QF would then likely get pushed back to April 4th in that case.

  11. sindriseagal

So if the odds are that Liverpool vs Chelsea will be blank are 68.75% and the odds that Sunderland vs Everton will be blank are 58.88%.
We have 0.6875*0.58.88=0.4048 or 40.48% that Liverpool - Everton will be played GW 30 and Man city - Norwich also.
    Correct me if I´m rong.
Think this is my best chance to have a full 11 on gw30.

Sorry, you're rong. Liverpool vs Everton can't be played in GW 30:
If Everton beat Bournemouth in the FA Cup L16 they'll play an FA Cup QF in GW 30,
if Everton lose to Bournemouth in the FA Cup L16 they'll play a PL game vs Sunderland in GW 30. Same applies for Newcastle vs Man City.

    Great article

What do people think will happen if Everton or Palace make the semis? Which seems likely that one will manage. Everton would have merseyside derby (league cup final), the palace game (semi weekend) and their GW30 blank to play with only 2 spaces

Not sure, either a random DGW or a Triple Gameweek in GW 37: they could move Everton and Palace's GW 37 fixtures to Friday night, play each other on the Monday, have LIV vs EVE on the Thursday and GW 38 is on the Sunday.

    Hey Perchino, great work !!
This has come real handy as I now have 12 GW30 players & 4 FTs.

I would have liked Spurs to advance in the FA cup as many FPL managers have 2-3 spurs players.

    Alderweireld/Daniels/Targett/Mertesacker/Simpson (suspended)
    Payet/Marhez/Alli/Ozil

If Everton will have no game week 35 and every week bar 34 and 37 has midweek european games and everton therefore have 3 extra games to slot into 2 spare weeks, does this mean a triple gw is likely then?

Also ... Why is gw31 not being used? No midweek euro games that week.
Or is it likely to be used?
