Predicting Goal Scorers

My latest analysis takes a look at whether a technique called logistic regression can help predict whether a player will score over the next six Gameweeks.

This looks at classifying something as one thing or another (e.g. will score a goal or will not) and assigning a probability to this outcome based on prior data.

Logistic Regression In Action

EPL Predicting Goals for Next 6 GW with Logistic Regression

It turns out that when applied to goal predictions its soothsaying ability is not bad. Using four seasons of data it pushes 50% accuracy.

To help finely tune this I have also looked at the usual suspects that many already use for attempting to predict goals: shots on target, shots in the box, shots, previous goals scored, big chances and penalty area touches both for the whole season as well as last four Gameweeks.

Results

Using this model the top five forwards for the next six Gameweeks are not much of a surprise:
1) Aguero,
2) Kane,
3) Lukaku,
4) Vardy,
5) Costa.

However, with midfielders there are a few surprises, namely a certain Swansea midfielder. This is based on predicted goals not assists by the way.

1) Barkley,
2) Firmino,
3) Andre Ayew,
4) Mahrez,
5) Alli

Great stuff. Be interesting to see how well this collection does. Must admit a three fwds line up from the above and five of those mids looks like a great collection for any team.

    Nice Article
But i think Siggi should be there instead of Ayew.

Could you explain logistic regression for 'dummies' as I tried to google it but couldn't understand 😛 ?

And could you like do one for Open Play metrics only as I am very sure Barkley would be nowhere near 1st if his 2 penalties were not counted

Bit too hard to run open play metrics sorry.

          Just without penalty stats?

            Meaning remove Barkley's 2 shots , 2 goals , 2 SiB and 2 SoT

No interestingly taking those goals and stats numbers does not drop him in the ranking for most likely to score in the next 6 gameweeks. Guess the rest of his stats are good enough even without the 2 pens

Firminio and Barkley are obviously poor actual targets because of the blank in 27 but could be good for people holding this week and worth considering maybe even after the blank.

Without those pens , last 6 weeks ,

                Barkley
                SoT -2
                SiB- 7
                Shots-16
                Goals- 0

I guess its those 16 bliddy shots

The algorithm is also taking into account his whole of season performance (cumulative values) as well as last 4 GW data as this provided a higher predictive ability than either just cumulative or last 4 GW alone. I have not tested more fine nuances such as last 6GW vs last 4

So think of a problem that has an outcome of yes or no e.g. is this cancer. You can feed a lot of past data with the right answers e.g. when factor x like age = 55, family history of cancer = yes etc how many people has yes to cancer or not. This basically gives you a formula you can then used to predict for future when you know age, family history etc to work out the probabillity of whether it is yes or no to cancer.

Less depressing and what I did here is load four seasons of data into whether a striker or mid with greater than 270 mins for scored a goal in their next 6 game weeks. Then loaded their stats like shots on target etc cumalative and last 4. I got the formlar and then applied that for the stats upto gameweek 25 to get gameweek 26+ predictions.

Hopefully that makes sense, let me know if it does not and I will try and clarify further.

Hmm..read more wiki last night and makes a bit of sense .....basically kind of a black box metric right?

Thanks a lot for answering 😀

Yes a bit more black box than simply looking at the stats or the linear regression that I rand before but not as much as some other techniques I'm keen to try like nueral networks and support vector machines (SVN). It just means you don't need to work out manually or make any assumptions when you are weighing up things like how much should shots in the box matter vs shots on target, using historical data and proven maths it works out how much you should weight the metrics.

            Great stuff 🙂

I am very skeptical of Mahrez and Barkley as their stats are skewed by penalties but the rest look spot on!

What is the technique? Don't quite follow the article here as it seems to be a table and the results but not the method or the process. Cheers for the approach, as always.

Those replies to EH are very helpful, many thanks for circling back and explaining further. I really like the longterm historical view of your work as it lets us fly at 20-30,000 feet and see things a bit more objectively than when we are so close and naturally influenced by recent events.
