Having assessed the latest Watchlist movements among the defence and midfield over the past two days, we now analyse the risers and fallers up front. Sergio Aguero moves back to the summit after bagging a brace against Villa, whilst Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy tuck in just behind as the trio brace themselves for very favourable Gameweek 30 fixtures.

Given he leads all forwards for penalty box touches, total goal attempts and shots from inside the box over the last four matches, it will come as no surprise to see Sergio Aguero head our latest refresh. Man City also face a kind looking fixture list over the coming period (nor, MUN, bou, WBA, che, STO), while they have an away trip to Newcastle that will form a double Gameweek at some point, perhaps in Gameweek 34 (che, new). The Argentine striker, now priced at 13.6 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), is the runaway leader of this week’s Captain Poll with 56% of the votes ahead of the trip to struggling Norwich, who have conceded 12 goals in their last four home matches.

Tottenham’s Harry Kane also moves up a spot on our ladder after he returned to the score sheet in last weekend’s 2-2 draw against Arsenal following two successive blanks. The England international faces very favourable match-ups over the next two Gameweeks (avl, BOU), although with Spurs’ schedule (liv, MUN, sto, WBA) less promising thereafter, he could certainly be dispensable as we look towards the doubles. The 10.1-valued Spurs front man also impressively leads all forwards, along with Romelu Lukaku, for shots on target (nine) over the last four matches.

Having failed to score in four of his last five appearances, Leicester’s Jamie Vardy slips to third position in our latest update. The Foxes striker, who currently sets us back 7.8 in FPL, has also fallen behind Aguero and Kane for shots from inside the box over the last four matches (11 compared to 17 for Aguero and 14 for Kane). Claudio Ranieri’s side are still flying high at the top of the table though, while their upcoming schedule (NEW, cpl, SOT, sun, WHM, SWA) remains very friendly, with four of their next six at the King Power Stadium.

Although Everton’s Romelu Lukaku faces a blank this weekend, and some tricky fixtures thereafter (ARS, mun, wat, SOT), the Belgian is a non-mover this time around given he’s scored three goals and bagged an assist in his last four outings. The 8.8-rated striker still offers great value then, while the Toffees will have at least two doubles during the final weeks of the season, with matches away to Liverpool and Sunderland to be rearranged.

Diego Costa (10.8) has been a striker transformed since the arrival of Guus Hiddink to Stamford Bridge, scoring eight goals and registering four assists in his last ten matches. The Spain international was forced off with a calf injury as Chelsea limped out of the Champions League on Wednesday night, however, and could be a doubt for their next league match at home to West Ham in Gameweek 31. He stays towards the top of our rankings in the hope he’ll fully recover by then, with favourable away fixtures at Aston Villa, Swansea and Bournemouth on the agenda over the next six Gameweeks. The Blues will also have a double Gamewek at some point, with their trip to Anfield needing to be rearranged.

After ending his poor form by scoring a brace in Arsenal’s 4-0 win at Hull in midweek, Olivier Giroud moves up a couple of places on our ladder. The Gunners do face a blank this weekend, but their fixture list is generally pretty kind over the next month or so (eve, WAT, whm, CPL, sun), while the home fixture against West Brom will also form a double further down the line. The 8.9-priced Frenchman isn’t assured of a place in the starting XI at the Emirates though, with Danny Welbeck and Theo Walcott both viable options to lead the line.

Sunderland’s Jermain Defoe (5.1) is also on the rise in our latest refresh, with the Black Cats facing three favourable fixtures (new, WBA, nor) between Gameweeks 31 and 34. Their clash at home to Everton also needs to be rearranged at some point, so the experienced front man still appears to be one of the strongest budget forwards around, as Sam Allardyce’s men battle to secure their Premier League status for another year.

The big climber this week is West Brom’s Salomon Rondon, who can’t be ignored any longer after finding the back of the net four times over the last six Gameweeks. The Baggies also face great fixtures against Norwich, Sunderland and, to a slightly lesser extent, Watford over the coming weeks, so while they face a blank in Gameweek 30, the 6.5-valued Venezuelan should certainly appeal as a possible differential for our three-man frontlines, with his current ownership at just 0.9% in FPL.

Bournemouth’s Benik Afobe and Man United’s Marcus Rashford both fall towards the bottom of our Watchlist rankings due to their respective teams’ tough upcoming schedules. Afobe still looks a decent option in the short-term with matches against Swansea and Aston Villa in the next four, but the other four matches on the current slate (tot, MCI, LIV, CHE) lessen the appeal of the 6.1-rated forward.

Likewise, Rashford faces difficult away trips to Man City and Tottenham in the next four Gameweeks, while United also have a blank to contend with this weekend. He may come back onto our radars should the Crystal Palace fixture that needs to be rearranged fall into Gameweek 34 (AVL, CPL), but otherwise the 4.6-priced youngster looks unlikely to repeat the heroics we saw against Arsenal on his Premier League debut.

A fairly decent run of fixtures after this weekend’s blank (STO, ars, EVE, wba, nor) sees Watford’s Odion Ighalo move up a spot or two on our ladder. Having blanked in his last six matches, the Nigerian, who is now down to 5.9 in FPL, is unlikely to see much investment until we see some evidence of a return to form in front of goal.

Southampton’s Shane Long takes the final place in our ladder. Passed fit for the weekend trip to Stoke, the Irishman has bagged five goals in his last 11 appearances, netting against the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea, and has clashes against Newcastle, Everton and Villa’s dodgy defences in the upcoming six rounds of fixtures.

  14. What's Your FPL Motivation?
    Return Of Chamakh

A couple of comments from Scratch's hot topic about Mini-League blocking (loading up on similar players from teams below you to stop them being able to overtake you) started up a bit of a conversation about whether FPL should be about 'fun' or 'results' earlier, (not to mention a bit of macho rank-sniping) and it got me thinking:

What do you get out of FPL and why do you come back each year?

Do you enjoy being a maverick and taking gambles, or slowly creeping up the overall ranks each year? Is it about competition with your friends, or - as some were hinting at earlier - simply winning and being the best (even at the cost of it being fun anymore)?

Yeah same to a degree, there is a lot of 'dullard' in my game alongside the odd punt - a mate of mine always tries to pick an entire team of differentials (his main aim to show that he 'knows more than me about football' - his words haha!) and rage-quits every year once he is inevitably doing badly, the only way I have to beat him is to swallow my pride and get on bandwagons (the one thing he refuses to do, to be alternative). I feel he would be great at FPL if he just brought a bit more of a mix into his approach too!

So for you, the final stretch warrants a cheeky bit of blocking? I must admit I'd be tempted if it was coming down to just the one gameweek and I thought it would clinch it for me over a rival. Not sure about long term though as it would ruin the game for me over a long stretch (essentially having someone else choose the players going into my team by extension)

Yeah, just the final stretch. I play for fun as well and I don't like it, but after 30+ gameweeks I don't want to spoil my whole year over some final gameweek badluck

Yeah good point, think I'd agree if it was just for a gameweek or two. I'm at the top of a couple of my MLs right now and the idea of blocking at this point seems very lame, but if this weekend was the last I'd be having a little peek haha

Winning things is my primary motivation, including mini-leagues and head to heads. I've won hundreds of pounds over the years which has enabled me to buy a guitar, countless CDs and graphic novels. I've also won a jacket via Gnu's head to head competition.

Rank is a consideration too but winning things tends to mean getting a good rank too. I like that I have not strayed out of the top 10K for the last five years.

I think that sometimes people forget its a game. Its not about real football, its about managing a revolving squad of players with chips a transfers over 38 weeks and using stats, watching games and advice from people here as a guide. What the prize is up to the individual but for me I need that motivation of winning stuff.

Thats interesting - I do like the idea of winning actual material things out of the game as keepsakes maybe! Do you ever pick up the Fender Telecaster and think 'Ah, thanks again for that last minute goal, Aguero (C)'? haha 😉

not that I get overly high in the rankings but the cash angle has never motivated me in the slightest, I get lots of joy annoying my mates by beating them in the mini leagues, wouldn't get one iota more if there was money on the table.

each to their own tho, hope you make a packet!

I get that money is a motivator but the ridiculous amount of time that people put into this game could be used to make far more money than could ever be gained doing this. Cash bets add a little spice but I'm really not that fussed about the money compared to the pride of winning.

I try to keep pace in cash leagues, but will avoid bandwagons that I think I can get away with avoiding and like to make a move once a month that nobody else is making. This season its Ozil and Payet that I've avoided and my rank fluctuates like nobody's business depending on whether they score well or not but it is certainly more fun than sticking to each week's zeitgeist moves.

Yeah to a large extent. I guess unlike a lot of people I actually quite enjoy assembling and up-keeping a template-ish side, though I normally try and have at least one or two differentials/risks in there... I like to think my squad combo is always gonna be relatively unique and tend to think the maverick/dullard distinction is often overstated.I guess I enjoy treading the gamblers line between risk and safety net and having a season long aim of max points gain

Winning the small MLs for bragging rights, trying to win the big MLs and striving for a good OR. But this rubbish season has forced me to take all three less seriously, so I'm just having fun!

      1. to win cash ML, obviously for the $ & bragging rights
      2. improve OR. last season i finished around 600, trying to get that top 1k twice in a row. it would look very pretty on the fpl CV

Enjoy the competitive side and banter with my mates in our mini leagues. We've got a fair bit of cash at stake that keeps it interesting and loads of different prizes set up throughout the season so even if you are doing great overall you can still win money back.

On top of that, I just like having an extra interest in each game. Can't watch a match now without thinking of the FPL impact! Quite sad I know!

In Sky its purely about winning for me, but this is mainly because of the money at stake. I still enjoy Sky, I would just never take a wild punt for the hell of it.

FPL I try to have more fun. Although I still want bragging rights over my mates of course!

4 or 5 seasons ago was my most enjoyable season. I was still a casual back then.

I was roughly 100 points behind the leader with 10 weeks left. I needed to beat his score by 10 points each week to catch him up. I needed differentials and to pick a different captain than him.

I picked players I would never normally. Siggy(first spell at Swansea), Dempsey, went for Rooney as captain instead of RVP.

It was really enjoyable. I cut his lead down to about 8 points with one week to go but he beat me in the end...

I would rather do that than be 140 points ahead with only overall rank to play for.

one year in the sky game (2012 as it happens) I was 100 points behind my mate in our mini league and he was ranked in the top 300 overall.
we agreed to leave our teams open (back then you could hide them totally if you wanted to) and every week was like a military operation checking every move he made, even from the usa when I was visiting there.

end of the season I beat him by 5 points, ended about 250OR and from then on moved onto fpl - very satisfying........

For me it's about playing for fun and just taking each week individually and trying to score as many points that week as possible, therefore take as many hits as you feel needed to get the best score that week. I've always found the -4 rule very unfair though - if anything the punishment is the wrong way round eg if you don't put out a full XI this week you should lose 4pts for every blank position, thus encouraging more active management and less of the hand sitting, which as a tactic is pretty Vile

"My feeling is a lot of people like to get on the high horse of going for the "fun pick" or "maverick pick" but ultimately they play "boring" for most of their selections.

Problem is everyone is touted as a boring pick these days so it's hard to be maverick without making your team extremely different which usually results in doing poorly.

For me it's about winning - however I need to."

Yeah sorry dude, I missed the new article and couldn't delete the old one haha! Meant to reply earlier. Yeah I think I do the same to be honest, a lot of more obvious steady stuff with the odd cheeky pick here and there.

True 'maverick' status does usually end up with less points. I do this with my 'girlfriends' team just to have a laugh with it but it always fails!

One of the best things for me is how I can watch almost any game and have a vested interest in it. It's made me enjoy football a lot more overall.

I also love all the banter surrounding scores each week.

Plus I win £250 this year if I'm top of my ML (Which I currently am by 52 points) which certainly helps!

This has been a big thing for me too - in fact, I didn't really follow football a huge amount, when I got drafted into a cash league at my new work one year. Then I started looking into the players and teams etc to try winning some cash, and found I had a good interest in it all, started watching football games, and am now into it! 🙂

For me its about the ML and getting bragging rights over friends. Love watching games when my players are playing. The feeling you get when the balls heading towards your Striker, When your Mid has the ball in a dangerous position or when your defenders up for a corner. Love wathcing Gilette Soccer Saturday when you have a few players in the 3 O'clock KO and waiting to hear a goal in the games and hoping to hear your players name has scored. I'd be lost during work and on Sat/Sun with FPL.

Honestly, for me it started out as an excuse to watch a dull Palace versus West Brom type game on a monday, moving on to the ML, we have lot of banter amongst ourselves in the ML, had even started a monthly prize type, but it lost steam as we sort of drifted apart with age, so now, it's basically cheering an aguero goal or a suarez goal (despite being a manchester united fan) Also i felt for me, it sort of controlled my dislike for clubs like city & liverpool

Nowadays i'm trying out few money related things in Fantasy football, nothing big, but just as a start.

so, yes it has become an essential part of my daily routine

as for my strategy, initially, say till GW 10-12, i'm full maverick mode, which sometimes works, sometimes fails miserable ( i Captained Payet in GW 8, not aguero) probably bit foolish, but i wanted to go for a different player, but as the seaon picks up pace, & as we move into november end, december, i transform to a dullard

About the blocking part, i do it from around GW 35 or afterwards, coz things get really tense around that time

      so that's my motivation

This is my first complete season that I'm actually playing seriously. Started using FFS about a year ago and for me it made playing fantasy very interesting and fun hobby, so thank you all 🙂

I started playing FPL four seasons ago, but in each of those seasons I quit playing at some point, mostly being disappointed with Liverpool, being the supporter.

Now with rank around 15k, and leading in all my mini leagues, my goal is to break into top 10.000 and stay top in those ML, so actually I play it competitive, and sadly bad week hurts me more, than good week gives me cheers. Also being a leader in MLs gives you that extra pressure, always watching your opponent's teams.

In both FPL and UFPL, because I think, in the right year, I can win the whole thing. For the former that's bragging rights, the latter it's cash.

My main ML is not really competitive. So it is all about overall rank for me. But I see it not so much as a competition against others, but against myself. FPL can be a test of nerves, patience, discipline, and commitment. FPL demands proper planning and clear-headed thinking.
That said, I've set my sights on winning the FFS Old Farts Club mini league this year.

I got a hot topic?? *wipes tear*

Primary motivations are fun and the bragging rights that come with winning. I hate blocking because it's boring and locking up your rival's players for several months in a season is nothing worth bragging about. A great but crappy way to win, but winning a more genuine way is far, far sweeter.

Btw I play several cash / pints leagues with mates each year since about '08 and have won all but 1 of those.

      A) 50% Enjoy the thrill of 'predicting' eventualities and careful planning
      B) 30% Trying to be the best and getting results
      C) 20% Rivalry with Scottish brother in law

My enjoyment has been greatly reduced this season due to my failure of both A and B

+1 on the satisfaction from predicting eventualities.
For me, if I bought someone I never would otherwise buy, but got him because he was getting points in a rival's team... say Bellerin for instance... I wouldn't take much satisfaction seeing him return a nice score on a saturday/sunday afternoon. The choice would have zero to do with my own intuition.

Right, let’s simplify my problem fine folk

    A) Kane + Arnie and minus 4 points
    B) Kompany + Williams

    Thanks

      hmmmmm

I think Kane will score and Arnie will not

I think Kompany will keep a clean sheet but Williams probably won't

I'd be inclined to go B

How come A costs you 4 points and B doesn't?

    Butland

    Alderweireld Kompany Fuchs

    Eriksen Mahrez Ritchie Silva

    Vardy Kane Aguero

Yeah that would be about right. Probably Siggy ahead of Ritchie though.

    Choose one

A play Clichy( Might not play)
B Get Toure out for a hit( For Silva probably)
