Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 37 – Wednesday

Eden Hazard continues his fine recent form with a fourth goal in as many league outings. Lamine Kone scores twice and Patrick van Aanholt bags a sixth of the season as Sunderland pull off another great escape, whilst Nathan Redmond and Dieumerci Mbokani bring in the points as relegated Norwich put four past Watford.

Hazard nets again

Chelsea lay claim to just one win in six following their draw on Merseyside.

Eden Hazard opened the scoring (Baba Rahman assist) for the visitors with his fourth goal in as many appearances. Shifted into a central support role as the fit-again Pedro took over on the left, the 10.9-priced Belgian has played with renewed confidence in recent weeks but next faces a Leicester City defence that’s conceded just 10 goals since Gameweek 20.

In the absence of Diego Costa (hamstring injury) and Branislav Ivanovic (groin), Bertrand Traore spearheaded Chelsea’s attack and John Obi Mikel filled in at centre-back. Costa is not expected to be passed fit for the Foxes match-up, which shines a spotlight on Traore’s out-of-position potential at the 5.4 mark in Guus Hiddink’s final match in charge before Antonio Conte takes over in the summer.

Benteke salvages point for Reds

Liverpool named a full-strength XI that left it late to rescue a point at Anfield.

True to his word, Jurgen Klopp recalled his first-teamers for the Blues’ visit. The manager’s assertion that fresh legs will be deployed at West Bromwich Albion this weekend is likely to trigger significant sales of his regulars prior to Sunday’s deadline.

Christian Benteke equalised (Sheyi Ojo assist) for the Reds in stoppage time, marking the third time in as many appearances that he’s produced attacking returns (two goals, one assist). The big Belgian looks in line to be unleashed from the off at the Hawthorns this weekend, with Klopp clearly intent on keeping last night’s starters fresh for next Wednesday’s Europa League final against Sevilla.

Kone brace secure Black Cats’ survival

Sunderland secured their top-flight survival with a resounding 3-0 victory over a hapless Everton unit.

The Wearsiders’ defence caused the damage, with Patrick van Aanholt’s sixth goal of the campaign satisfying his 65,000 new backers. Lamine Kone then opened his Premier League account with a brace at the Stadium of Light – the winter signing ended as the highest-scoring player in double Gameweek 37 after racking up 21 points. Both men profited from Sunderland’s fourth shut-out in seven outings, which holds them in good stead against an inconsistent Watford attack.

Jermain Defoe and Yann M’Vila bagged an assist apiece. The former registered 10 points across the double and has now produced attacking returns in four of his last five starts, encouraging owners to retain his services for Sunday’s trip to Vicarage Road.

Canaries drop into Championship

Despite recovering from their slump and recording a 4-2 home win over Watford, Norwich were consigned to relegation by way of Sunderland’s victory.

Alex Neil made four changes for the Hornets’ visit, with Sebastien Bassong and Robbie Brady dropping to the bench. Dieumerci Mbokani reclaimed a starting berth up top and netted a brace, meaning he’s bagged three goals in his previous quartet of starts. Considering that Everton – who shipped 11 goals in their last four outings – are next on the Canaries’ agenda, the DR Congo international harbours differential appeal in the final Gameweek.

The same can be said of Nathan Redmond, who rewarded over 7,000 new suitors with a goal and two assists last night – indeed, he ended up as the highest scoring midfielder over the double with a total of 17 points. Wes Hoolahan and Steven Naismith also turned provider for a goal apiece.

Deeney in the points again

Watford fell to their third successive road defeat after being picked apart at Carrow Road.

Troy Deeney notched a goal and assist, gratifying 42,000 Fantasy managers that acquired him prior to Watford’s double Gameweek. Given that the Hornets welcome Sunderland on the final day, his 7% ownership will likely feel inclined to retain the in-form marksman.

Odion Ighalo scored his 16th goal of the season to arrest a 12-match barren streak. Nonetheless, he chalked up three fewer shots on target (four compared to seven) than Deeney across their previous four fixtures, underlining his slide down the hierarchy.

Craig Cathcart’s 6,400 new owners were left exasperated by the Northern Ireland international’s own goal. Watford recorded a solitary clean sheet in their last 10 match-ups, negating the attraction of their budget defenders.

That Sunderland game last night certainly made up for all the 1 pointers in the Hammers game on Tuesday 🙂

Too far away. Staying in the top 500 would be great but I'd settle for top 1k as my team isn't very well set up for 38. Got any Robbie Brady style tips for the final week?! 😆

Ah you're set up pretty well!

Bellerin - Smalling - Cresswell is my trio!

Only players I'd be wary of are the Sunderland defenders and Sturridge.. Also, I sold Mahrez for Tadic myself.

Sturridge out? Doubt he'll play myself with Benteke lurking.

Yes. I think I owe him the last game after he's been so good to me this season 🙂

You going to play safe and captain Sanchez or go for something puntier?

Cool 🙂 felt very very weird selling Mahrez alright but I gotta take a chance when I'm 18 points behind in the ML and after dropping out of the top 50k 😐

Kun or Tadic for captaincy here.. Definitely not going with Sanchez, he was behind KdB in my pecking order too.

Kun feels safer, Tadic feels more explosive for reasons unknown to myself.. 😛

Fantasy Football Scout Daily Hot Topic

What new chip would you like to see next year?

This was discussed on last night's scoutcast. We came to the conclusion that the bench boost and triple captaincy chips were a success, capable of bringing in at least an extra 10 points - even more for those who triple captained Sanchez/Aguero in GWK 34.

The All out Attack chip though has been less successful, with Fantasy Managers swapping a defender for a poor midfielder - a move that is mostly either going to lose points or make them back at best.

If the AoA chip is replaced - what would you like to see in its place. Our rule last night was something that, like bench boost or triple captaincy, is likely to bring in at least another 10 pts.

      - Automatic Ideal Captaincy (picks highest points)

      - Dual captaincy (vice gets doubled too)

      - Emergency 1 week loan (temporarily swap player for another of same value without losing a FT, transfer is reversed the next week for free too)

      - Last Man Back (swap keeper with any outfielder, similar to AOA)

A bonus boost chip is a fantastic idea.

One of the key reasons I like it is because it adds a chip element to an existing part of the game.

Bench boost - looked at the benc

Triple captaincy - the captain rule

        Bonus boost - the bonuses

The AOA tried to look at the formation rule, but didn't really work.

I think a successful chip needs to take an existing element of the game and then give the manager the chance to get more out of it for one week only.

Bonus boost - gets my vote.

Only downside might be that casuals won't know the details how players get the bonuses or be bothered to look it up. That is more for people on here. The impression I get from people in my mini leagues are that they just seem to appear randomly later in the day and don't really know why. Maybe my friends just aren't that clever...

At least with the other chips they know which players will likely score, assist or get clean sheets so can plan accordingly. To a lot of people I think the bonus boost people would just be like playing wheel of fortune.

A similar rule to how the McDonald's Fantasy World Cup / Euros work; (And the UFPL on here too)

Where you pick first XI on Saturday morning, and after the game has concluded, (and if certain players haven't performed), you have the opportunity to switch them for a player on your bench. This can also work for (c) switch also.

Just a one week chip, not permanent.

The captaincy is placed on the player that has scored the most points at the end of that GW for the team.

Would be a great chip for weeks when we just can't decide who to captain.

        ^this I would love.

I also would be happy with a chip that if used during a GW for which we have played our wildcard, would return our old team, with retroactive effect already for that GW. That would have saved me from a lot of misery. Unless I would have already sold my wildcard for 20 points.

Or maybe a chip that enables you to roll a third trade? Often one just want to make a couple of changes, but end up destroying your team since feel obliged to do as many transfers as possible with your WC.

That's another good one. But with the wildcard selling chip, this would effectively mean that those who have the luck in the beginning are about impossible to catch. Selling their wildcards and rolling another one while watching points come and team value rise without doing anything.

A retrospective points gain chip, i.e. - after the end of a GW (and before the next) to be allowed swap your (c) with your (VC). - you could possibly do it with a 'bench swap' where your allowed swap 1 active player for 1 on your bench as long as you stay in formation.

Lot of hate for AOA but I used it this week, played Antonio instead of Bellerin so an extra 8 points, not bad

In contrast I wasted my tc on lukaku wk 33 so extra 4

Also, it hampered all of my mini league rivals when they used it (missing cs etc)

I wouldn't miss AOA if it's gone, but you don't have to use it

A chip that lets you run your team substitutions like UFPL for a week. You'd have to find a good week to play it where you have 3 players playing late in the week and would have to have decent options throughout the team, so it would involve some skill/planning.

    40. Smarty Pants

I strongly dislike the TC and BB chips because they directly interfere with the points scored for a single gameweek, ruin all the H2H tournaments, and bring an extra element of luck for the results of the serious players and at the same time they create a bigger division between the serious playeys and the actual casuals who are either inexperienced or don't give too much thought about the rules and their implications. I think many casuals after the last few GWs may get the feeling that they were somehow bamboozled and will be discouraged from playing in the future.
The AOA chip is the only chip I don't mind.

Watching overall rank is almost pointless until the very end because you have no clue how many chips managers have played. In H2H leagues (and the cup?) it's even worse.

I've got a couple of thoughts:

      1. Your biggest scorer gets double points as your captain so no need to set one at the beginning of the gameweek.
      2. Both your captain and vice captain score double points.

    45. JÆKS ⭐

Double points for your VC as well

Although I would like it if the points from your VC were multiplied by 1.5 instead of 2 (like your C) in every gameweek. And that points from your bench were multiplied by 0.5 when they come into play because someone from your starting 11 didn't play. I really hate it when people benched Mahrez and with some kind of luck they had someone who didn't play.....

I triple captained Aguero on GW34, that got me a ridiculous number of pts, I messed up my BB (got 4pts from th five games my subs played) and AOA actually resulted in me getting less points, so a mixed bag, but I just never liked any of the chips. I like a good punt so how about a punt chip? For one game week you can bring in a loan player for free whose ownership is below 2% then once that week is over they leave your team. Afterwards you are free to transfer them in as normal if they did great or you can just forget about that poor dud you punted on.

      The injured player chip

Firstly change the rules so if you leave a flagged injured player in your outfield 11, you don't benefit from an autosub (casuals get so many points this way)
The chip though allows that rule to be waived for teh week, so if at say the end of an International week when all teh fake injuries spring up and the manager doesn't give us a clue whether, ahem, Aguero, might be playing or not we can leave Mr Red Flag on our 1st 11 and play the chip, if he doesn't play our bench autosub saves the day.

      The chip back chip.

Playing it restores the TC or BB you wasted in a previous week.

The copy a team chip - choose any other player, e.g. world no 1 and get their points this week instead of your own points, obviously played predeadline.

like the bonus boost idea. A quick glance seems like my bonus pt range was 1 to 16 so has the potential to match BB & TC.
has to be something that can compete with BB & TC. Might make DGWs a bit more interesting if you have another genuine option.

also worth noting the wc rule changes probably had as much of an impact on the season as the other chips.
A lot of people used the 1st WC early (mine was GW3).
But the ability to use the 2nd WC as part of the planning for DGWs & the TC/BB must have been a big differential from previous seasons.
the capability to field strong (unchanged) sides up until a week before DGWs rather than planning 4-5 GWs ahead and taking hits made a big difference to how the 2nd half of the season panned out.

Thanks for the discussion of chips. Agree with what was said on the scoutcast. My suggestion isn't so much about chips, rather the interaction with them in the browser interface. Say you've no plans for transfers and simply wish to employ a chip. When you select it, it displays "active", which is misleading. The chip like a transfer must be confirmed. So for me this is misleading. This is really a usability issue.

        cheers jonty.

I was thinking that an "ideal starting lineup" chip could be useful. Playing the chip would have the effect of auto-subbing in a team's highest-scoring XI. It would remove the benching headache for the week.
When to play the chip might be a challenge, as it is hard to predict which week will have a lot of bench points.

Chips increase luck at the expense of skill but they probably keep the casuals interested for longer, so they may be here to stay (like wildcards), but don't add any new ones.
The BB and TC chips should only apply to overall scores and classic mini-leagues. In H2H matches and Cup competitions, scores should be as if the chips had not been played.
It should be made more obvious that the chips have to be confirmed before they can take effect - the confirmation box isn't even on the same screen till you scroll down. There should be a clear message about this, as there is when making transfers.

Have to agree with the clarity of activating chips, a real issue and its easy to be caught out.

FPL have never taken away 'toys' from what I can remember so I don't think they'll start now. I think its reasonable to suggest replacing an existing toy with something better. Hence the idea of replacing AOA with something more useful.

If they want to keep the AOA chip, I don't like the way it forces you to play 2-5-3.
I would like to play it in GW38 but with a 3-4-3, just using it as an insurance in case 3 of my defenders don't play.
I would also like it to allow 5-5-0, in case none of my forwards play.

Doubling both captain and vice-captain could possibly be an alternative to triple captain.

The two half-season wildcards are probably an improvement on the older system, but they do seem to result in all us FFS types pursuing the same strategy, instead of having to choose between the main wildcard early or saving it.

How about keeping the existing 5 chips (BB, TC, AOA and 2 WCs), but only allowing us to use any 3 of them?

I'm in exactly the same situation re AOA this week. Would love to play it and start a 343 but alas it can't happen. I don't think they should keep this chip though, it is next to useless anyway.

Triple captain and Bench Boost should stay as in my opinion they have both been very successful and interesting chips. If they were to replace AOA with a new chip it should be something completely different from BB and TC for variety's sake.

I think a nice adjustment to the WC strategy would be to have the first WC available for the whole season, this will bring a strategic element back into play where conceivably we could have 2WC's saved for the DGW's or just have 1 if we blow the season WC early on.

I do like the suggestion of having an array of chip options and only being able to select 3. I think this could be a very good idea.

Eliminating chip points from Head to Head matches seems a pretty consistent theme that should be looked into. Seems reasonable.

I like the bonus boost and best XI suggestions, though both are a little randomized and in the latter case more of a fallback. I think it should be something that takes the same level of decision as TC and BB.

Maybe every goal scored gets a 3 bonus? could range from 6 extra points to 18/21

        'Stealth mode' chip!
A chip, upon activation hides all your team information to everyone else (except the user ofc) for one GW.

I know it's not as fancy as most of the suggestions here. But could be useful for mini leagues.

I don't think it has been specifically mentioned above, but replace the AOA with an "Any Eleven" chip - for one week only select any eleven players regardless of formation. Could be 2-1-5-3, 0-3-5-3, 0-5-3-3 or whatever.

        Bank boost chip.
You get the value in the bank added to your game week score. Probably a small addition of points for many but it could really mess peoples teams up if trying to hard to downgrade players before playing this chip. Muhaha!

I can see a bunch of strategies for it:
Could give like 30-35 points if you start with nothing but budget players in GW1. Then you wildcard in week 2. Worth the 35 points to have crap players in gw1?

Gradually downgrade to cheaper players towards a late season wildcard when your team value is high.

Use it when Aguero gets injured any you sell him for a budget forward.

How about a Mulligan chip. You have to play it before the final whistle of the final game in a gameweek, but it resets your team to the exact one you had the previous gameweek, thus cancelling any stupid transfers you may have wasted!

I'd like to see a Chip that substitutes the 'score' you're lowest scoring player' (of your starting 11 playing a minimum 1 min), with that of your highest of the 4 benched that Gameweek, regardless of position. It could only work out to be a couple of extra points or it could be a hat full, but it provides another dimension to the look of your subs bench.

I think the chips should be like wild cards. You get 2 of each a season and it resets when Jan wildcard resets.

You also have to use the first batch in the first half of the season.

Makes it a bit more fun than just waiting till the dgws to play them.

From Matchpint's "Worst Team of The Season" a great quote from Yoshida, with an adequate commentary (by them, not me):

prone to long, loud and particularly gassy brain farts, Yoshida kindly shared with us the advice his manager was forced to give him after yet another blunder cost Southampton points recently.

“[I need to make] fewer easy mistakes and more concentration for 90 minutes and he (Koeman) said I need to improve concentration,” Yoshida said.

“I have two or three times made a very easy mistake, careless mistakes during the game, so I need to decrease those kind of mistakes.

“Then I will be a much better player.”

Pretty much bulletproof logic from Big Ronny K, slightly more sound than the thoughts that led to the big boned Dutch boss handing Yoshida a three-year contract extension just last January though…

I'm wondering whether to take punts for GW38 or play safe and get in the same players as my rival

Going out with a bang penultimate update

If you are in the top 3 can you let me know here or send me a message on Twitter - @Kingsoflyon7

Before GW32 I started a FFS league to determine how best to utilise the chips we had available to us. 287 keen FFSrs joined this league and I will be providing weekly update on the top of the table.

Analysis of the top 10 after GW37 is as follows -

      - FIVE players in the top 10 used their TC chip. These players are placed 6th to 10th
      - FOUR players in the top 10 used their BB chip. These players are placed 1st to 4th
      - Only ONE player in the top 10 did not use a chip in GW37
      - All of the players have use their 5 chips
      - The highest score was Lee Byron with 125 points !

Overall analysis of the top 50

      - Average points 103.52
      - 60% captained Payet
      - 14% captained Carroll
      - 14% captained Hazard
      - 12% captained Defoe
      - 58% transferred in Hazard for his 12 points
      - 32% transferred in Cresswell for his 1 point
      - 6% of players made 4+ transfers

Daniel Kemp remains at the top of the league but he is only 5 points clear of Lee.

Full analysis on how the chips were used will be performed after GW38. If you would like to request a piece of analysis please comment on the post below and I will take into consideration.

The highest scores for GW37 in my January to May League (http://fantasy.premierleague.com/my-leagues/507/standings/), which runs from GW20 to GW38, were:

Ying Loong Lee (4th) 129 (4 point hit, Bench Boost, OR 860).
Kristian Daniels (47th) 128 (4 point hit, Triple Captain Payet).
Burhan Samaan (2nd) 127 (FT saved, Bench Boost, 4th in your league, OR 633).
Matthew Grekko (3rd) 127 (4 point hit, Triple Captain Defoe, 11th in your league).

The top 50 in my league averaged 102 exactly.

Good analysis, KOL and an interesting exercise.

In my opinion, it is very hard to determine which strategy won out in the end. I did very well with the BB chip in 34 and less so with the TC chip in 37.

However, this was solely down to the player captained. AC in my case 😡

I'm not sure we can draw any consistent conclusions as it is dependent on player choices.

      14/15 - 29 goals
      13/14 - 28 goals
      12/13 - 36 goals
      11/12 - 32 goals

      13/14 - 2.57

Play Townsend or bench and transfer Milner-Tadic for a -4, chasing 6pt lead

What do we think of Eriksen as a midfield option instead of Tadic/Mane? Newcastle relegated will mean doors open? Are Spurs still motivated? And how effective will they be without Dembele and Alli?

A better option than Tadic/Mane you reckon? I find it very hard to predict that Newcastle-Spurs game. You'd think Spurs will want to end 2nd and end in style, but then again.. Without Alli and Dembele..

My best three defenders to play this GW would be Bellerin, Smalling and Alderweireld, with Cresswell and Fuchs on the bench. But my rival, who I'm 32 points ahead of, will almost definitely be playing Rojo, Cresswell and Simpson due to lack of options.

Do I play Cresswell ahead of Alderweireld just to block that differential or stick with Alder?

Reading this site with headphones on, I notice that some stupid playlist on the right hand side of the page starts to play every time I reload the page and I always have to go up to put it on pause so my ears don't start to bleed for that horrible sound torture. Just woke up and seen the the rankings.

After having a horrible season I pulled my WC in 26 and thought, screw this now I'm gonna have fun. Were ranked 750k then.
Now I have taken hits worth 56 points just in the 5 last weeks as I had to navigate the dgw's without WC and yet I now have my best rank of the season. Still a shy 186k but the fun I've had these last weeks makes it worth so much more

It most certainly is a google ad. Can confirm it now, since there was in its place something that started promisingly (although promising that my computer is hacked), namely a fit semi-naked babe breathing heavily.

Turned out that it was a menstrual pad commercial. A menstrual pad!? Really, google? FYI, I'm a guy! That's some bad stats there, first the worst techno of all history and then menstrual pads!

Thoughts on what to do this week? Thinking of Carroll or Fabregas out for a punt.

      De Gea (Lloris)
      Smalling, Bellerin, Gabriel (PVA, Lovren)
Sanchez (c), Mahrez, Payet, Fabregas (Lanzini)
      Aguero, Martial, Carroll

      Sánchez Milner Iwobi Hazard Lanzini
      Rashford Agüero Carroll

1 FT 4.3 ITB, what transfer should I do?
      a) Rashford > Martial
      b) Carroll > Long/10.9 striker
      c) Lanzini > Mane/9.2 Mid

      Got 3 Arsenal players already

Please bear with me on this long post - I have closed the gap from 32 last week to 3 points for the last cash prize in my work ML - £100 up for grabs!

      Current team, 1FT 4.0 ITB:

      Darlow
      Bellerin Gabriel Smalling
      Hazard Ozil Payet Lennon
      Kane Deeney Carroll

      Robles Cresswell Simpson Coutinho

Now my rival only owns 2 players that I do (Smalling & Ozil) - problem is he has Sanchez.

      Would you rather:

      A) Ozil > Sanchez
      B) Coutinho > KdB and bench Carroll
      C) Ozil + Coutinho > Sanchez + KDB -4
