Spot the Differential – Gameweek 38

We head into Gameweek 38 with many mini-leagues still on the line, as Fantasy managers seek some last-minute inspiration. This time around, Liverpool’s midweek goal hero is joined by City’s up-and-coming young striker and Southampton’s Senegal marksman in our quest for differential success.

Christian Benteke

Understandably, Jurgen Klopp is primed to name a second-string side for Liverpool’s trip to West Bromwich Albion, given that Liverpool are schedule to clash with Sevilla in the Europa League final on Wednesday. Daniel Sturridge appears unlikely to play any part at The Hawthorns, which paves the way for Christian Benteke (8.0) to spearhead the Reds’ attack. Despite notching just 180 minutes across his previous five appearances, the Belgian frontman mustered three goals and one assist, with a last-gasp midweek leveler at home to Chelsea sure to boost his confidence.

Although Benteke was only granted a 16-minute cameo against the Blues, he charts joint-third for attempts (nine) and joint-second for shots inside the box (seven) among forwards in his last two outings. Taking the season in its entirety, Benteke’s goal frequency (one every 173 minutes) is only bettered by five counterparts who’ve amassed at least 1000 minutes of pitch time. The same can be said of his shot frequency (26.4), which places sixth under the same parameters.

Liverpool’s concluding match-up pits them against a Baggies outfit that’s recorded just five clean sheets at home all term. In addition, only six teams have conceded more big chances on their own turf (30). Liverpool’s attack on the road also measures up favourably – Tottenham Hotspur are the only team that’s chalked up more attempts (272 vs 252) than Liverpool, underlining their swashbuckling style away from home under Klopp.

Kelechi Iheanacho

In the wake of back-to-back braces against Stoke City and Southampton – which boosted his tally to seven goals (695 minutes) for the season – Kelechi Iheanacho (4.8) shot onto our radar as a tantalising budget forward. Having started each of the last three, the Nigerian marksman will be savouring the prospect of taking on a Swansea outfit that’s missing key first-team regulars such as Ashley Williams, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Lukasz Fabianski.

Razor-sharp finishing has been Iheanacho’s most striking attribute, illustrated by the fact that he ranks top among all forwards for shot-conversion rate (31.3%). Moreover, only Sergio Aguero (98 minutes) lays claim to a superior goal frequency (110.7). Illustrating how central he’s become to the Sky Blues’ attack in recent fixtures, Iheanacho ranks joint-second for touches (181) and second for touches in the final third (95) among forwards since Gameweek 35.

Swansea managed convincing victories over Liverpool and West Ham United in their last pair of outings, yet Man City will be heartened that only three teams shipped more goals (nine) in their previous quartet of league ties. The Swans also surrendered the joint-fourth-most shots inside the box (38) and the second-most big chances (13), obliging defensive form that could play into the hands of the league’s top-scoring attack.

Sadio Mane

Given that Sadio Mane (7.4) has recovered from the virus that forced him off early against Spurs, it would be remiss for us not to shine a spotlight on the 5%-owned winger.

Mane – who netted a three-minute hat-trick in the final home clash of last season – boasts five goals in four starts and next faces a Crystal Palace team that will surely be shuffled ahead of their FA Cup final date with Manchester United next weekend.

Scrutinising the underlying stats, Mane ranked joint-top among midfielders for shots on target (seven) across his previous four appearances. It’s also worth noting that, despite registering just 281 minutes, he accrued three more penalty-box touches (31) than any of his midfield rivals. In home matches, the Senegalese wide man ranks second among midfielders for shots inside the box (35) and joint-second for shots on target (18).

Mane has five double-figure hauls to his name this term, which highlights his potential for explosive returns against an Eagles rearguard that places joint-bottom for shut-outs (two) and fourth for goals conceded (31) since Gameweek 20. Alan Pardew’s men will certainly be tested by a Saints attack that bagged 10 goals in their previous trio of home encounters and placed top for goals (11) across their last four outings.

commented on your other post. No Aguero is a small issue, but I think your forward trio scores well this week. Start Creswell instead of PVA (especially as you are playing Deeney, so I asusme you think they will concede)

Thanks Xabi, logic with PVA as we saw of the previous dbl is that he is always capable of attacking returns..

Cresswell in poor form away to stoke.. hmm not sure if i will swap PVA tbh.. il have a rethink tho.

Nine points behind first in my mini league. Trying to work out who to captain, im sure he'll go with Aguero who I have but I can't decide whether to match him up as I have Aguero too or whether to go with Sanchez who he doesn't have.

I also have Bench Boost to play and he doesn't so im thinking matching up to him makes sense just in case Sergio goes nuts.

What are your best final day of the season memories.

Anyone captain Tchoyi? Anyone get a final day hattrick? Or win a mini league with a final kick of the ball?

Walcott and Nolan final day transfers have netted hat tricks and both took me top of different mini leagues that I had been lagging behind in that season.

In a mini league with a few FFS posters, Pepin was leading all season last year from day 1 until Theo did the final day business. I still like to remind him about it.

I remember winning the league on the last day with Chelsea winning 8-0 away to wigan.

My rival and I were neck and neck.

      He captained Lampard.
      I captained Drogba.

Chelsea were 4-0 up with Lampard scoring a Penalty and having an Assist.

At this stage i was down and Out as Drogba had no returns.

But in the 63rd Minute it all changed!!!

      63rd min - Drogba goall!
68th min - PENALTY!! Great, now im done for as Lampard is going to score.

BUT WAIT.. LAMPARD HAS STEPPED A SIDE AND GIVEN THE PENALTY TO DROGBA!.

      GOALLL!

      80th Min - Drogba Hatrick!!

Most incredible FPL moment i have experienced lol..

Crowned the ML winner. In a emphatic rollercoaster fashion.

In my rookie season (2009-10) I made every mistake imaginable before finishing with 103 in DGW37 and 91 in GW38, improving my OR from 452k to 329k and then to 261k.
My GW38 heroes were Lampard (16*2), Drogba (16), Bale (12) and Giggs (11), backed up by Malouda and Baines (6 each).
That was even before I discovered FFS, but I have never come close to that score in GW38 since.

My greatest achievement ever in FPL was winning my ML last year on the final day. 12 points behind going in to the final day. Had players like Schlupp, Cambiasso, Kane who all scored to bring the scores level!

Final results and bonus came in, and I'd lost by 1 point... was devastated. Then, they updated the BPS and removed Vardys 2 BP (who my rival had!). I ended up winning by 1 point. Incredible scenes in my household as I won £600.

Tomorrow, I am 20 points behind but own Vardy! Hope he is my differential 🙂 Don't think anything can top last year though.

I never miss a World Cup or Euro fantasy, adds an extra incentive to watch all the games.

For me it works the other way round. So enjoyable to watch the Brazil WC without the noise of short-term fantasy.

Never doing a tourney fantasy again (including Chumps League).

          You should try it.

Thank you to Mark, Jonty, Andy and Luke for making the Scoutcast even better this season.

With FPL becoming more popular, I reckon it could he a regular TV show each week.

Need some help with this one, bit of a weird situation

My rival has one made one transfer and his money ITB has gone from 0.7 to 2.1, a change of 1.4. He had Pedro and the price difference between Pedro and Mane is 1.4. I feel safe in assuming he has brought in Mane and I believe he will captain him in an attempt to close the 32 point gap (He has no other options, no Arsenal players etc.)

I'm 0.1 off doing Iwobi to Mane frustratingly. Do I take a -4 to replace Iwobi with Mane to cover the differential? Mane could explode, and if he scores 2+ goals and is captained that's 32 points, which covers his gap.

The -4 would probably be Carroll to Long or Alderweireld to Van Dijk.

In your shoes I would do it and make the Carroll move.

You are not thinking straight. If you have a 32pt lead do not under any circumstances take a 4pt hit.
You just need to get a few points on the board, and you will be over the line.
Having owned Mane for most of the season, I know he is as likely to deliver 2pts as he is to get a haul.

Exactly, but if he DOES get a haul and is captained, I'm in trouble. Surely I shouldn't take that risk?

It's not mathematically the correct decision to ensure the highest points total, but it completely blocks his hail mary to catch me up.

2 imo, Carroll is more likely to get points than Bolasie.

Anyone else feel a bit uneasy with Sanchez c for no real reason? Or am I just letting the idea of a rival captaining a hat trick ruin my natural game?

    Agüero Ighalo Vardy

So I'm set on Carroll - Giroud. Also have migs + Robles so gonna need to do a keeper transfer and take a 4 point hit. I have the money to do either of the below:

    A) Migs - Randolph. Is Adrian definitely out?
    B) Robles - Darlow. Play migs and hope he plays but if not Darlow defo will.

    Any help appreciated thank you

Thought on bringing in Vardy this GW? He'll be going for Golden Boot and the whole team will be behind him to do it. On penalties too.

Sturridge to Vardy and then Loftus to Mane I think.

          That looks good.

I'm avoiding a hit myself, but Sturridge and Loftus-Cheek probably 0 or 1 pointers so definitely makes sense here.

That's my thinking. Trouble is I do also have PvA and Robles. Was planning to bench boost this week. Don't really want to do a minus 8 on those guys!

Have Aguero. No Kane though. I'm looking to sell Sturridge and upgrade Loftus. If I get Kane there will be no Loftus upgrade.
